“Run, Alex. Hurry, son. Get out of here. These people will kill you too.”

Samuel lay on the ground, clutching the bullet wound in his leg.

His five-year-old son, Alex, just stood there, looking down at his father writhing in pain. “No, Dad, I’m not leaving you here.”

Samuel could see the men searching for them from where they were hiding.

They had escaped into a dark alley, but it was only a matter of time before they were spotted.

“Come on, tiger. Don’t be stubborn. You’ve got a long life ahead of you. Don’t waste it on a dying old man. Just go.”

Samuel slid a gold ring with a bright green gemstone off his finger and handed it to Alex.

“Take good care of this for me, okay?”

Alex nodded and squeezed the ring tightly in his small fist. Samuel pulled himself to his feet, gripped the trigger of his gun, and limped out into the street to face the men standing by his car.

Alex watched from the shadows as Samuel and the other men exchanged fire.

Alex looked on in horror as bullets riddled his father’s chest. Samuel’s knees buckled, and he fell to the ground with a thud.

With his last breath, Samuel looked up at Alex.

“Remember the faces of the men who shot me, tiger. Promise me you’ll make those bastards pay.”

Alex shouted.

Suddenly, Alex woke up in his bed, drenched in sweat. He looked down at the ring on his finger and sighed.

“Not again.”

Every night for the past 18 years, he had the same exact dream, a dream so real it felt like a memory.

“This is getting to be a real pain in the ass,” Alex groaned.

He pulled back the blankets, got out of bed, and dragged himself to the bathroom to get ready for work.

He hated waking up like this, but he hated his job even more. Alex was an orphan. Both of his parents died when he was young, so once he turned 18, he was on his own.

His job as a delivery driver barely covered his bills, but he had no choice but to support himself, and he didn’t know any other way to make money.

His life felt like an endless grind. There was only one thing that brought him happiness, and that was his girlfriend, Vanessa. Whenever Alex saw her, he forgot all of his problems.

He had plans to see her later. It was her birthday today, making it even more special. That thought was enough to keep a smile on Alex’s face throughout the entire boring day of deliveries.

After work, Alex stopped by a bakery to get Vanessa a birthday cake.

“How much is this one?” Alex asked the shopkeeper, pointing at a large, tiered cake with white frosting.

The shopkeeper looked Alex up and down suspiciously. “$50.”

“That’s way too expensive,” Alex thought.

He pointed at a cupcake-sized version of the same cake.

“Okay, how about the small one?”

The shopkeeper smirked. “You mean the cupcake? It’s $5.”

Alex breathed a sigh of relief. “I’ll take it.”

“Vanessa will understand,” he told himself. “If we’re going to get our own place and move in together someday, we’ll need to save every penny.”

When Alex reached Vanessa’s apartment, he saw colorful lights and heard loud music coming from inside.

He rushed up the stairs and rang the bell.

A few moments later, Vanessa answered the door in a sexy and obviously expensive new dress.

Alex was shocked to see that Vanessa’s apartment was festively decorated and packed wall to wall with guests. The table was overflowing with drinks, snacks, and an enormous chocolate cake.

Alex was too stunned to speak. He remembered that everyone in the room was staring at him.

He remembered the cupcake he was holding and offered it to her.

“Hi, Vanessa. Happy birthday. I didn’t know you were having a party tonight.”

Alex recognized a guy named Derek walking over to them.

“Why’d you order a cupcake?” he asked Vanessa, interrupting them. “I already bought you a real cake. How much do we owe you, bud?” Derek asked Alex dismissively, pulling a wallet out of the pocket of his expensive suit.

“Don’t be silly, Derek,” Vanessa giggled. “This is Alex. You recognize him, don’t you?”

Alex’s fingers curled into fists. He knew precisely who Derek was—a spoiled, rich kid who was always hovering around his girlfriend.

“You’re dating a delivery boy?” gasped one of Vanessa’s friends, a tall blonde girl named Tracy. “Wow, Vanessa, you’ve really lowered your standards, haven’t you?”

Alex’s face turned bright red as the room erupted in laughter.

“You think that I’ve lowered my standards, but you’re wrong,” Vanessa told Tracy. “My standards have actually gotten much, much higher.”

“Is she talking about me?” Alex wondered for a moment. He thought Vanessa was defending him.

Then he saw her reach for Derek’s hand.

“That’s why I’m breaking up with you. Derek and I are together now. This is my new standard. I hope you all approve.”

Alex’s heart sank, while everyone else in the room laughed and cheered wildly.

“What?”

“Why would I be with someone who can only afford to buy me a cupcake when I can be with someone who can buy me the whole bakery?” Derek sneered.

Then he leaned in and kissed Vanessa’s lips.

Alex couldn’t stand by and take the abuse any longer.

“Shut up, you bastard!”

He threw the cupcake he was holding at Derek’s head, then lunged at him and punched him in the face.

There was a loud crack as Alex’s fist connected with Derek’s nose.

Derek looked down in shock as blood spattered onto his expensive suit.

“You’re going to regret that,” he growled.

He took a swing at Alex, but Alex easily dodged the blow, landing a kick to Derek’s stomach.

Derek fell to the ground, clutching his ribs.

“How could you do this to me, Vanessa?” Alex shouted.

But she just smirked in return.

As he stormed out of her apartment, he grabbed a bottle of vodka from the table and slammed the door shut behind him.

Alex wandered around for a while without knowing where he was going. He took big swigs from the vodka bottle, trying to numb the pain in his heart.

But with every sip, it felt like his pain was only getting worse.

He couldn’t help replaying the scene of Derek kissing Vanessa over and over in his mind.

“Vanessa was the only good thing in my life, and now she’s gone.”

Alex had no idea where he was, so he sat down on the steps of a fancy hotel and gulped down the last sip of vodka.

He tossed the empty bottle into the street and watched the glass shatter into a million pieces.

“I just want this night to be over,” he told himself.

He was feeling dizzy and tired, so he lay down on the hotel steps, and in less than a minute, he was fast asleep.

A few minutes later, an expensive black car with tinted windows drove up in front of the hotel.

“Looks like it’s our lucky night. Time to teach my sister a lesson. Grab him, boys,” said the driver, a gangster named Shane Stone.

Four of Shane’s men jumped out of the car. They picked Alex up as if he weighed no more than a pillow.

“Where are we taking him?” asked one of the men.

“Bring him up to room 409. Take off his clothes and put him in bed next to my sister,” Shane commanded.

“Yes, boss,” a burly man replied. “And hurry up. We have to get him into her bed before the drugs wear off and she wakes up. We might not get another chance like this one.”

Shane’s men picked up Alex and carried him straight up to room 409.

Once Alex’s clothes were removed, they laid him on the bed gently next to Shane’s sister, Anna, who was already lying there fast asleep.

The next morning, Alex was woken up by a hard slap across his face.

“Who are you? And how did you get into my room? What have you done to me?”

Alex was shocked to see that he was lying in bed next to a girl he didn’t recognize.

To make matters worse, they were both completely naked.

“I have no idea,” he started to explain, the blood rushing to his face.

But before he could say anything more, the door to Anna’s room burst open, and Shane came rushing in with his men.

“Shame on you, Anna. I always knew that you were a slut, but Grandpa wouldn’t believe me. Now I finally have proof.”

Why did Shane put Alex in Anna’s bed? What will the fallout be when people think Anna and Alex slept together?

Who are you, boy? Why have you come here? An older man emerged from the warehouse that Alex, Ron, and Randall had just approached. He smoked a cigarette, his face obscured by the shadows of the night. Alex stepped forward. Like I told the guards here, I've come to meet with Hans. The old man flicked his cigarette to the ground, stomping it out with his foot. You've got a lot of nerve. Coming in here without an appointment. Alex shrugged. Not really. I think he'll be interested in what I have to say. The old man snickered. Hans is interested in one thing and one thing only. Money. So you'd better have lots of it if you want to get in his good graces. Alex smirked. Oh, trust me, I've got plenty of that. There was a brief silence.

Buying a car, making a worker go inactive. Don't pay for that SafeTech order. I want to force the guy who's running that company to become a delivery boy again. Craig smirked wickedly and waited patiently for Javier's response, staring at him intently. The two sat across from one another in Javier's office. Javier arched his brow. You want me to jeopardize our business reputation just for your petty revenge? Craig folded his arms. I promise there'll be plenty of benefits for you in it. If you agree, we'll make sure it's worth your while. Plus, if SafeTech goes down, you could make an offer for the company for pennies on the dollar. Javier smiled mischievously. I like the sound of that. Very well. We'll see that we do. Craig smirked. Excellent. The next day at Sa

Shane Stone is the reason that you and Anna married. Ron told Alex, as they sat across from each other at a private booth in the Sapphire Club. He told me that he put a drunk man in his sister's bed while she was unconscious. Alex's eyes went wide at Ron's earth-shattering revelation. Are you sure that what you're telling me is true? Ron nodded. I'm a hundred percent sure. I just didn't know the man he was talking about was you until I saw you at the Stone Mansion today. Then it all clicked. Alex stared at Ron angrily. His anger was mostly directed toward Shane, not Ron, but it still caused the beefy thug to tremble. Did Shane happen to say anything about why he did that? Alex growled. Yes, Boss. He said it was a setup. He wanted to make his grandfather angry at

Alex's eyes went wide as Charlotte delivered her ultimatum. He was sitting across from Charlotte in his car, while she stared at him with a suspicious glare in her eyes. I'm going to give you one more chance, Alex, otherwise I'm walking out of this car, and I might not come back. I told you, Charlotte, I'm Alex Callahan. That's it. Just the poor husband of your friend, Anna. Nothing more. Charlotte fumed. You're lying again. God. How am I supposed to believe a word you say if you won't even be honest with me about who you are? She huffed slightly. You escaped from Ron and his men today. How did you manage that? When I heard you talking the night you kidnapped me, you were treating him like he was your servant. How do you two know each other? Alex grew irritated as well. And w

As Alex stood outside the Stone Family mansion, a group of armed thugs poured out of two SUVs, surrounding Alex in a matter of seconds. He had just left Harvey's birthday party, but Shane had pursued him and called in his goons. Shane threw his head back laughing. You're about to learn what it means to mess with Shane Stone. Shane snapped his fingers and the group of thugs closed in on Alex. Then Shane raised his hand, a vicious smirk spreading across his face. Wait, I almost forgot. He chuckled slightly to himself. I brought someone special today to make sure that this is a lesson you'll never forget. As he spoke, the door to one of the SUVs opened again, and out stepped a familiar face. Alex's eyes went wide as he saw the figure. Is that Ron? Sure enough, Ron stepped out from the SUV, cracking his knuckles. Alex wasn't sure how to respond. This could go so badly. What if Ron reveals to Shane who I really am? Shane pointed at Alex as Ron stepped out of the car. There

Come now, Alex, show us your gift. Harvey beckoned to Alex, who stood in the middle of the Stone family living room, clutching the watch that Laura gave him tightly. This was meant to be his gift for Harvey's birthday, but Craig had just given him the same watch as a present. Sandra snapped her fingers. Hurry up. Don't keep my father waiting. Let's see what you got for him. Alex started to take a step backward. No, really. I'll just leave my gift with the others. Why don't you see what Alex got you? Instead, as he hesitated, Shane suddenly ran up to Alex, stealing the box out of his hands. Stop being so ridiculous and hand over the present. Alex tried to grab the watch back, but Shane dodged out of the way. Shane, give me that back. Or else? Or what? What are you going to do to me? Shane snickered. Let's see what you got for my grandfather. He opened the box. The e
