“Please, Shane, don’t tell grandfather about this. I have no idea how it happened. I’ve never seen this kid before.” Anna was visibly shaking, hugging the silk bedsheets tightly around her naked body to cover herself as her brother, Shane, and his men barged into the room.
Shane threw his head back and laughed. “Sorry, Anna, grandpa has a right to know what a slut you are if he’s going to put you in charge of the family business.” “Slut-shaming, really?” Alex interrupted, rising to Anna’s defense. “Besides, nothing happened between us. I don’t even know how I got here.” Before Alex could say anything more, Shane’s grandfather, Harvey Stone, stormed into the room. As soon as he saw Anna in bed with Alex, his eyes turned dark with anger. “That’s not what it looks like, Grandpa. Please let me explain,” Anna begged him. Harvey shook his head. “Your actions speak for themselves. When Shane told me what you were up to, I didn’t believe him. But there’s no way to deny what I see right now with my own two eyes. You know very well what my rules are.” “And you also know what happens when you break them,” Harvey scolded. “But your rules are so old-fashioned and unfair,” Anna protested, her eyes welling up with tears. “I’m the one who decides what’s fair and unfair in this family,” Harvey growled. “Whether you like it or not, there is a certain code of conduct expected of business leaders. I was taking a big risk tapping you to be the next CEO of StoneCo.” “No woman has ever held that position. Your behavior today proves you are not fit to serve.” “You will have to withdraw your candidacy immediately.” “But how would anyone know about what happened if you don’t tell them?” Anna pointed out. “Not that anything did,” she added. Shane snickered. “How do you think we found out about it? This little love fest started long before you got to the room. Drunken makeouts in the bar, public displays of affection. My friends are never going to let me hear the end of it.” “I don’t remember any of that,” Anna stammered. Alex shook his head. “Neither do I.” Harvey exclaimed, “Your behavior was completely irresponsible, with no consideration whatsoever of the damage it might do to StoneCo’s reputation.” Anna began to sob. “What about my shares in the company? I worked so hard for them. You won’t really take those away too for something like this, would you?” “No shares come with the position. No CEO job, no shares. You knew exactly what the stakes were, yet you chose to do this anyway. There are no exceptions unless…” Harvey stroked his chin thoughtfully. “What is it, Grandpa? Tell me, I’ll do whatever you want,” Anna pleaded. Harvey pointed at Alex. “There is one way we can still save your reputation. If this man agrees to marry you, I’ll let you keep your shares and keep you in the running for CEO. If not, you’re on your own.” “I don’t know what happened last night, but I don’t want to ruin this woman’s life,” Alex thought. “Besides, Anna is beautiful, and the Stones seem to be very rich. How bad could it be?” Growing up as an orphan, Alex always wondered what it would be like to have a family. “I’ll marry you,” Alex volunteered. But when his eyes met Anna’s, he felt like he was staring death in the face. Harvey nodded. “Very well. From now on, you are her husband and a member of the Stone family.” Anna huffed. “Don’t I get any say in the matter? I’m the one who will have to spend the rest of my life with him.” “Of course you do. But if you say no, you’re out of the running for CEO, and your shares in the company will go to Shane. It’s that simple.” “But Grandpa—” Harvey cut her off. “End of discussion.” Anna huffed. “Fine, I’ll marry him.” Harvey nodded. “Wise decision.” “There’s a big party at Cyrus’s place tonight. I want you to bring him there. It will be the perfect chance for the two of you to announce your engagement. We need to make this whole unfortunate incident seem like it was intentional.” “Go on, boys. Let’s let these two lovebirds have some privacy.” Shane and his men followed Harvey out of the room. Shane sneered at Anna on his way out. “Congrats on the new husband, sis.” As soon as they were gone, Anna looked at Alex, tears streaming down her face. “You ruined my life,” she wailed. “This is all your fault.” She ran into the bathroom and shut the door. “But I really don’t know how this happened either!” he shouted through the door. Alex wondered if she would ever come out, but after a few minutes, she reappeared, sniffling and dabbing at the corners of her eyes with a tissue. She threw Alex a towel to cover himself up. “This engagement is only temporary until I can figure out a way to get us out of this. Until then, we need to act the part.” “Come on, get dressed. If we’re not at that party tonight, things will only get much worse for both of us.” That night, Anna arranged for one of her drivers to pick Alex up at his apartment so they could go to the party together. When the car arrived outside his building, Alex took one last look in the mirror. He only had one nice piece of clothing in his closet, a blazer that he’d inherited from his father. It was old, but it still looked good on him. It would have to do. He met the driver downstairs, then they went to Anna’s house to pick her up. Alex looked up in awe as the car stopped in front of a huge mansion in a famous, exclusive neighborhood. When Anna got to the car, it was obvious how much she hated him. She didn’t even say hello. Still, I have to admit that she looks beautiful, Alex thought, and she must be even richer than I imagine. Her shoes alone are probably worth more than I earn in a month. As they drove to the party in silence, Alex grew nervous. He fidgeted with the ring on his finger, rotating it in circles. “We should take that ring off before we go in,” Anna said suddenly. “It’s ugly.” It was the first thing she had said to Alex since she got in the car. Alex shook his head. “This ring is very important to me. I can’t take it off.” Anna rolled her eyes and let out a huff. She didn’t speak to Alex again for the rest of the trip. As soon as they arrived at the party, Anna got out of the car and started walking toward the house. As Alex hurried to catch up to her, he noticed that Cyrus’s house was like a fortress. Men carrying semi-automatic weapons were patrolling the grounds and flanking the entrance. “What the hell… what kind of a party is this?” he wondered. “Is Anna’s family tied to the mob?” He followed Anna into the house and was shocked to see a familiar face. “Hey, what are you doing here, loser?” It was Vanessa’s new boyfriend, Derek, who was just as surprised to run into Alex at the party as Alex was. Alex smirked when he noticed that Derek was wearing a bandage on his face. “Oh, good. I must have broken that jerk’s nose when I punched him.” “Be nice, Derek,” Alex warned, clenching his fists. “Remember what happened last time?” Derek got into a fighting stance. “You got lucky, that’s all. This time, I’m ready for you.” Suddenly, a well-dressed man appeared and wedged himself between Derek and Alex. “What the hell is going on here?” “This man snuck into your party, Cyrus,” Derek replied. “He doesn’t belong here.” Cyrus looked Alex up and down. “It’s true that I’ve never seen you before. Who are you, and why are you here?” Alex stood there speechless for a moment. “Honestly… I have no idea why I’m here.” “He’s with me,” Anna admitted reluctantly. Derek’s mouth fell open. “Anna, why are you hanging out with this guy? He’s a joke.” Suddenly, Cyrus noticed Alex’s ring, and his expression immediately changed. “Come with me. I want to speak to you alone,” he told Alex. Alex looked around at the armed guards standing nearby and realized he didn’t have a choice. He followed Cyrus to his office. Derek was seething as he watched Alex go. “Thanks, Cyrus. And Anna, you should stay away from him too if you know what’s good for you.” “Oh, shut up, Derek,” Anna snapped. She watched nervously as Alex disappeared into Cyrus’s office. “Can I see that ring you’re wearing?” Cyrus asked Alex as soon as they were alone. Alex covered the ring with his hand protectively. “Why?” “Don’t worry, I’m not going to steal it. I just want to see something. Please.” Alex finally took off the ring and handed it to Cyrus, who studied it carefully. When Cyrus saw the “T” inscribed on the inside of the ring, his mouth fell open. “Tiger… it’s you. It’s really you,” he shouted. Alex was in shock. The only other person who had ever called him “Tiger” was his father in the recurring nightmare he had every night. But how could Cyrus know that? “I can’t believe we finally found you. I have been looking for you for years. Eighteen years, to be exact,” Cyrus exclaimed. “Did you know my father?” Alex managed to sputter, his heart pounding in his chest. “I didn’t just know your father.” Cyrus pointed to a picture of three men hanging on the wall. In the photo, Alex’s father, Samuel, was standing next to Cyrus and a third man Alex didn’t recognize at first. “We were business partners. The three of us built a business empire together worth billions of dollars.” “Why does that other man look so familiar?” Alex wondered. Suddenly, he noticed the scar on the man’s face, and it all came back to him. In the dream he woke up to every morning, Alex’s father begged him to remember the face of the man who shot him. There on the wall was the man who betrayed Samuel and killed him in cold blood. “No… it can’t be.” Alex’s eyes flashed with rage. “Don’t worry, Dad. I’ll find that bastard and make him pay, just like I promised.” Will Cyrus lead Alex to his father’s killer? Why has Cyrus been looking for Alex for the past 18 years? What else will Cyrus reveal about Alex’s true identity?Latest Chapter
Chapter 8
“Did Cyrus send you to come get me?” Alex still had no clue who this mysterious woman was that he was now following through the front door of Shaw Industries. All he knew for sure was that she had helped him get away from Shane and his men without having to start a bloodbath. “That’s right,” was all the woman said in reply. “Cyrus,” Alex repeated. “He owns this company.” “Oh, you mean Mr. Shaw?” the woman replied as they reached the elevators. “That’s what his employees call him. It might do you some good to remember that.” “I didn’t mean any disrespect,” Alex assured her. “He’s an old friend of the family.” The two of them were alone in the elevator, but the woman barely acknowledged him. She doesn’t seem to like me very much. Is she judging me based on my appearance? Alex wondered. I’ll have to fix that. When they reached the top floor, the woman led Alex to her desk and handed him a document. “This is a list of the positions we have open at the moment. What ki

“Oh, it’s you. Come in… I guess.” Welcome to music and the spoken word. Today, Alex’s hopes for a warm welcome were dashed the moment Anna opened the door. She barely looked at him and began walking away. Before he stepped inside, Alex took a deep breath. Don’t give up. Stay positive. They’ll warm up to you eventually. Alex followed Anna to the living room, where her parents, Sandra and Robert, were sitting on the sofa. They stared at him with sour faces as he walked in. Alex waited for Anna to introduce him, but he looked around and realized she had already disappeared. He forced a smile onto his face. “Hi, I’m Alex.” Sandra looked Alex up and down and huffed in disgust. “I’m guessing you must be Mom and Dad.” Alex continued trying to cheer up his future in-laws. “You don’t mind if I call you that, do you? Oh, here, I brought you a gift.” He shoved the bottle of expensive champagne at them before they could answer his question. Sandra barely acknowledged t

“I’m ready whenever you are.” Alex locked eyes with Ben Jamieson, fully prepared to fight him right there in the middle of the Sapphire Club. Ben smiled at the corner of his mouth. “Good. Let’s find out if you really are Samuel Gibson’s son.” Ben got up from the private booth. They both raised their fists, circling each other. “Take it easy, you two,” Cyrus interrupted, jumping between them. “This is a nightclub, not a fight club. Let’s go somewhere else to sort this out.” “There’s a sparring ring downstairs in the basement. Come on.” Cyrus gestured for Alex and Ben to follow him. “After you,” Ben growled, mock politeness in his tone. Alex exhaled and clenched his jaw. I’m going to make Ben Jamieson regret challenging me to a fight. Or else I’ll die trying. Alex took in the sight of the basement beneath the Sapphire Club. It was configured like a makeshift boxing ring with weapons of all kinds lining the walls. A single lightbulb hung from a string over the are

The Sapphire Club is one of the most exclusive clubs in Chicago. They’d never even let me in the front door, Cyrus,” Alex said, gripping his phone tightly. “Don’t be ridiculous,” Cyrus chuckled. “I own that club. You’ll have no trouble getting in. I promise you’ll be surprised just how powerful it is to be the Tiger.” “When you’re the boss, a lot of doors open for you.” “But I’m not the boss yet,” Alex reminded him. “Not yet, that’s true. But once you get Ben Jamieson on board, you’ll be one step closer to reclaiming your legacy and getting the Tiger Group back on track.” “Good point. I’ll be there soon,” Alex replied. He hung up the phone, threw on some shoes, and headed out to the Sapphire Club. Alex stepped out of the cab, paying the driver with some of the bills Cyrus had given him. He took in the sight of the Sapphire Club’s entrance. Wow. This place must have cost a fortune to build, he thought, staring up at the massive façade covered in neon. He took a few st

“How did I get into Anna’s bed that night?” Alex blinked as he sat in the back seat of Anna’s car. He had absolutely no idea how to respond to her question. After all, he didn’t even remember going into the hotel. “Look, I know this is hard to believe, but I really don’t know how I ended up in your bed. One minute, I was out in the street drunk, and the next I was waking up next to you.” Anna rolled her eyes. “That is such a pathetic excuse. You men always lie to protect yourselves. Do you have any idea how much you’ve ruined my life?” Alex arched an eyebrow. “And how have I ruined your life exactly?” “Excuse me, Anna bolted. Did you ever think for one moment that maybe, just maybe, I didn’t want to marry a delivery boy who I’ve never met before? Or maybe that I’d want to actually be in love with the person I marry? No, you only think about yourself, don’t you?” Alex sighed. If only I could tell her who I really am, but I promised Cyrus I would keep it a secret. And beside

“No, it can’t be.” Alex’s eyes flashed with rage as he stared at the photo in Cyrus’s office. The sounds of the party thumped through the wall from the next room. The photo featured Alex’s father, Samuel, standing between a younger version of Cyrus and another man with a large scar on his face. The man with the scar looked exactly like one of the men in his recurring nightmare, the one who killed his father. Alex’s dream was beginning to seem more and more real. “What’s wrong? You look angry,” Cyrus asked Alex. Play it cool, Alex told himself, if you want to avenge your father. You have to wait until the time is right to strike. “This man in the photo… I recognize him. Who is he?” “That’s Raymond Caster. He was a business partner of mine and your father’s. Together, the three of us ran the Tiger Group,” Cyrus explained. “What’s the Tiger Group?” “The Tiger Group is the most powerful mafia syndicate in Chicago, a vast network of businesses and mob activity that spans ac
