Varek couldn’t move.

The room had become unnaturally quiet, as though everyone inside it was waiting for him to break.

Cassian Vale stood before him with bound hands, bruises across his face, and tears gathering in his eyes.

But it wasn’t Cassian’s appearance that held Varek frozen.

It was his final statement.

The woman you call your mother isn’t Eleanor. It’s Mara Mercer.

Varek slowly turned toward Mara.

She stood near the doorway, her face pale, her lips trembling.

“Tell me he’s lying,” Varek said.

Mara didn’t answer.

“Tell me!”

She lowered her eyes.

Varek felt something inside him shatter.

For twenty-nine years, Eleanor had been the woman whose love he had lost, the mother he had searched for, and the reason he had refused to surrender to the people who wanted him dead.

He remembered her voice singing him to sleep.

He remembered the way she held his hand when he was frightened.

He remembered the last time he had seen her before the supposed accident.

Now Cassian was telling him those memories belonged to a woman who had never given birth to him.

“Who are you?” Varek whispered.

Mara’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.”

“Who are you?”

“My name is Mara Mercer.”

“I know your name.”

Varek stepped toward her.

“I want to know who gave birth to me.”

Mara pressed a trembling hand against her mouth.

“I did.”

The answer came so quietly that Varek almost failed to hear it.

He stared at her.

“No.”

“Varek—”

“No!”

He struck the table with his fist.

“You don’t get to call me that. You don’t get to stand here and pretend you’re my mother after twenty-nine years of lies.”

Mara flinched.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

“Then why did you let another woman raise me?”

“Because I was told you would be killed if I kept you.”

“By whom?”

Mara looked toward Cassian.

He lowered his head.

Varek turned on him.

“You knew?”

Cassian swallowed.

“Yes.”

“And you let me grow up believing Eleanor was my mother?”

“I had no choice.”

“Everybody has a choice!”

Cassian’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was a coward.”

The admission silenced Varek.

Cassian continued.

“When you were born, your grandfather discovered that three children had been connected to a secret arrangement involving the Thorne inheritance. He believed one of those children would eventually destroy the family. He wanted to separate you, erase your identities, and make sure none of you could challenge him.”

Varek stared at him.

“Why me?”

“Because you were the child he feared most.”

“I’m supposed to believe my grandfather was afraid of a newborn?”

“He was afraid of what you represented.”

Cassian looked toward Richard.

“Your grandfather had discovered that Richard was secretly moving money out of the family companies. He knew Richard intended to seize control of the empire. He believed you would eventually inherit the company and uncover everything.”

Varek turned toward Richard.

“You tried to kill your own son to protect stolen money?”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“I never wanted you dead.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“Then why did your men shoot at me?”

Richard looked away.

For the first time, he appeared unable to defend himself.

Varek turned back to Cassian.

“Continue.”

Cassian took a shaky breath.

“Mara gave birth to you. Eleanor gave birth to another boy. A third child was delivered that same night, but his identity was hidden before the records were completed.”

“Who was the third child?”

Cassian glanced at Adrian.

Adrian stood near the doorway, his face pale.

“I don’t know,” Cassian admitted. “Not with certainty.”

Varek laughed bitterly.

“Of course you don’t.”

“I know the child was connected to the Mercer family. I know Richard altered the hospital records. And I know Sebastian helped move the children to different households.”

“Why would Sebastian do that?”

“Because your grandfather promised him control of the Blackstone investments if he helped keep the children apart.”

Varek shook his head.

“Sebastian told me he promised my grandfather to protect us.”

“He did.”

Cassian looked directly at him.

“But he protected the inheritance first.”

A heavy silence followed.

Then Varek turned toward Mara.

“Why did you let Eleanor raise me?”

Mara wiped her tears.

“Because Eleanor loved you.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“She had lost a child.”

Varek froze.

Mara continued.

“Her newborn son was taken from her shortly after delivery. She was told he had died. She was devastated. When Richard brought you to her, he told her that you were a child who needed a mother and that she could give you a new life.”

Varek stared at her.

“So she knew I wasn’t hers?”

“No. Richard told her that you were an orphan whose parents had died.”

“And she believed him?”

“She wanted to believe him.”

Varek felt sick.

Eleanor had loved him.

But she had loved him under a lie.

Mara had given birth to him.

But she had allowed him to grow up believing another woman was his mother.

And Richard had known the truth all along.

“Where is Eleanor now?” Varek asked.

Mara looked toward the floor.

“I don’t know.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

“I swear. The last time I saw her was twenty years ago. Richard told me she had agreed to disappear.”

Varek turned toward Richard.

“Did she?”

Richard remained silent.

Varek stepped closer.

“Did Eleanor agree to disappear?”

Richard finally looked up.

“No.”

Varek’s stomach tightened.

“What did you do to her?”

Richard’s jaw clenched.

“I kept her away from you because she was asking questions.”

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know.”

Varek grabbed him by the collar.

“Where is my mother?”

Richard didn’t resist.

“Eleanor is alive.”

Varek froze.

Richard continued.

“She has been alive all these years. But she wasn’t the woman who gave birth to you.”

Varek released him.

“Where is she?”

Richard looked toward Lucian.

The man had been watching the entire confrontation with an expression of quiet amusement.

“Ask him,” Richard said.

Varek turned.

Lucian smiled.

“Eleanor is in a place where no one can reach her.”

“Tell me where.”

“Not until you sign the declaration.”

Varek looked at the document on the table.

The paper that would transfer the remaining inheritance rights and remove his claim to the fortune.

Naomi was still tied to a chair.

Adrian’s son remained a hostage.

And now Varek had learned that the woman he had called his mother might be alive somewhere, waiting for him.

He picked up the pen.

Lucian’s smile widened.

“Excellent.”

Varek placed the pen on the paper.

Then he looked at Cassian.

“One question.”

Cassian nodded.

“Ask.”

“Why did you tell me you were my father?”

Cassian’s expression changed.

“Because biologically, you are Richard’s son. But I was the man who was supposed to raise you.”

Varek stared at him.

“You were supposed to raise me?”

Cassian nodded.

“Your grandfather arranged it. He believed Richard would never harm a child he didn’t know was his. He wanted you raised outside the Thorne household, protected from the inheritance struggle.”

“Then what happened?”

“Richard discovered the arrangement. He took you before I could bring you home.”

Varek looked toward Richard.

Richard’s eyes were fixed on the floor.

“You stole me from my own father,” Varek whispered.

“I was protecting the family,” Richard replied.

“You were protecting yourself.”

Richard said nothing.

Varek turned back to the document.

He signed his name.

Lucian immediately took the paper.

“Wise decision.”

Varek placed the pen down.

“Now release them.”

Lucian examined the signature.

Then he laughed.

“You really believe I would let everyone walk away?”

Varek’s expression didn’t change.

“You have my signature.”

“And I have your inheritance.”

Lucian folded the document.

“Why would I give up my only leverage?”

He gestured toward the guards.

“Take Naomi and the boy downstairs. Keep Adrian here. The others can leave.”

Adrian lunged forward.

“You promised!”

Lucian struck him across the face.

“Promises are for people who have power.”

Varek moved, but a guard pressed a gun against his ribs.

Lucian leaned close to him.

“You wanted the truth. Now you have it. You wanted your mother. She’s waiting for you. And you wanted your inheritance.”

He smiled.

“You’ve just surrendered it.”

The guards dragged Naomi and the boy through a side door.

Adrian struggled against the men holding him.

“Daniel!”

His son screamed for him.

“Dad!”

Adrian’s face twisted with helplessness.

Then the door slammed shut.

Varek watched Lucian walk toward the exit.

“You’ve made a mistake,” he said.

Lucian stopped.

“Have I?”

“You think the fortune is what makes me dangerous.”

Lucian turned.

“Isn’t it?”

“No.”

Varek’s eyes hardened.

“You’ve mistaken my patience for weakness.”

Lucian laughed and disappeared into the corridor.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Richard stepped toward Varek.

“You shouldn’t have signed that document.”

Varek turned.

“You told me to save them.”

“I didn’t tell you to surrender the inheritance.”

“You’ve spent my entire life taking things from me. Why should this be any different?”

Richard’s face tightened.

“Because that fortune is the only thing keeping you alive.”

Varek stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked toward the door Lucian had used.

“The inheritance isn’t just money. It controls the companies, the properties, the private security network, and several accounts used to protect the people connected to the original agreement.”

“And now Lucian controls them.”

“Yes.”

“Then we take them back.”

Richard shook his head.

“You don’t understand. The declaration you signed transfers your rights, but it also activates a clause your grandfather buried in the trust.”

Varek felt a chill.

“What clause?”

Richard looked at him with something close to pity.

“The heir who voluntarily surrenders his claim loses the protection of the family trust.”

Varek stared at him.

“And?”

Richard’s voice dropped.

“Every person who has spent twenty-nine years trying to kill you now has legal access to your location and financial records.”

Varek’s phone vibrated.

A notification appeared.

INHERITANCE RIGHTS REVOKED.

Another followed.

SECURITY PROTECTION TERMINATED.

Then a third.

IDENTITY EXPOSED.

Varek slowly looked up.

Richard took a step backward.

“I’m sorry.”

Varek laughed without humor.

“You’re sorry?”

Richard’s eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted this to happen.”

“You could have stopped it twenty-nine years ago.”

“I was afraid.”

“And now?”

Richard swallowed.

“Now I’m afraid of what comes next.”

Varek stared at the man who had destroyed his childhood, stolen his identity, and tried to control his future.

For the first time, he saw Richard without the authority of the Thorne name.

Just a frightened man who had spent his life protecting a lie.

Varek turned toward the door.

“Where are you going?” Richard asked.

“To find Naomi. To find Adrian’s son. And to find Eleanor.”

“You don’t know where they are.”

“Then I’ll search every place you ever owned.”

Richard caught his arm.

“Varek, listen to me. If you go after Lucian without the protection of the trust, you won’t survive the night.”

Varek looked down at Richard’s hand.

Then he slowly removed it.

“Maybe.”

He walked away.

Behind him, Richard remained standing in the corridor.

And for the first time in twenty-nine years, the man who had controlled Varek’s life had no idea what his son would do next.

⸻

Twenty minutes later, Varek reached the underground parking area.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Who is this?”

A familiar female voice whispered, “Varek.”

He stopped.

“Mother?”

“Don’t call me that.”

His heart sank.

It was Eleanor.

The woman who had raised him.

The woman who had supposedly disappeared.

The woman whose voice he had searched for in every dark corner of his life.

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Are you safe?”

“No.”

Varek gripped the phone.

“Tell me what happened.”

Eleanor began crying.

“I should have told you the truth years ago.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because I was afraid you would hate me.”

“I already hate the people who lied to me. Don’t make me hate you too.”

There was a long silence.

Then Eleanor whispered, “I didn’t give birth to you, Varek.”

“I know.”

“But I loved you as if I had.”

Varek closed his eyes.

“I know that too.”

“There’s something else you need to know.”

“What?”

“The child I gave birth to twenty-nine years ago is alive.”

Varek’s breath caught.

“Who is he?”

Eleanor’s voice broke.

“Adrian.”

The line went dead.

Varek stood motionless.

Then his phone vibrated again.

A message appeared from Eleanor’s number.

IF YOU WANT TO SAVE YOUR BROTHER, FIND THE BODY BURIED UNDER MY NAME.

Beneath it was an address.

An abandoned cemetery.

And a final message.

BEFORE MIDNIGHT, ONE OF YOU MUST DIE.
