Varek Thorne had thirty seconds to decide who would die.

The gun pressed against his forehead belonged to a man he had saved from prison three years earlier.

The man holding it was his father’s former driver.

And the person standing behind them, smiling as if he had already won, was the uncle who had stolen everything from him.

“Thirty seconds, Varek,” Uncle Lucian said, checking his expensive wristwatch. “Tell me where you hid the original inheritance documents, or I will put a bullet through your head.”

Varek sat in a metal chair inside an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city.

Blood ran from a cut above his eyebrow. His expensive black shirt was torn, his wrists were tied behind the chair, and his left cheek was swollen from the beating he had received earlier.

Yet he was smiling.

Lucian noticed.

“What’s so funny?”

“You’ve spent twenty years pretending to be the smartest man in the Thorne family,” Varek replied calmly. “It must be exhausting.”

Lucian’s smile disappeared.

He walked forward and slapped Varek across the face.

“Where are the documents?”

“Somewhere you will never find them.”

“Search him again!”

Two men immediately approached Varek and searched his pockets. They found his phone, wallet, and a small silver ring he had worn since childhood.

Nothing else.

One of them handed the ring to Lucian.

“Boss, this is all we found.”

Lucian examined it before throwing it onto the dirty floor.

“Your father gave you that useless thing, didn’t he?”

Varek’s eyes darkened.

“Pick it up.”

Lucian laughed.

“What?”

“Pick it up.”

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Lucian stepped on the ring.

“Your father is dead. Your mother is dead. Your family has abandoned you, and your money belongs to me. You are no longer a Thorne. You are nothing.”

Varek lowered his head.

He remembered the night his father died.

He remembered the hospital corridor, the smell of antiseptic, and the way Lucian had stood beside his father’s bed, pretending to cry.

He remembered his father’s final words.

Never trust the man who benefits most from your silence.

At the time, Varek had been too young to understand.

Now he understood everything.

“Twenty seconds!” Lucian shouted.

Varek raised his head.

“Uncle, do you know why you never found the original documents?”

“Because you hid them.”

“No.”

Varek smiled.

“Because you never understood what my father was trying to protect.”

Lucian’s expression changed.

“What did you say?”

Before Varek could answer, a phone began ringing.

It was Lucian’s phone.

He looked at the screen and frowned before answering.

“What?”

The voice on the other end was frantic.

“Sir, something terrible has happened!”

Lucian turned away from Varek.

“Speak clearly!”

“The Thorne Group’s accounts have been frozen. Every major subsidiary is reporting the same problem. Our shares are collapsing, and the board is demanding an emergency meeting.”

Lucian’s face went pale.

“Who authorized the freeze?”

“We don’t know yet. But there’s something else.”

“What?”

“The private bank has revoked your access to the family’s emergency reserve.”

Lucian gripped the phone.

“That’s impossible! I’m the chairman!”

“The bank says the authorization came from the original beneficiary.”

Silence.

Slowly, Lucian turned toward Varek.

The younger man was watching him with an expression that made the older man’s stomach tighten.

“Who is the original beneficiary?” Lucian demanded into the phone.

The answer came immediately.

“Varek Thorne.”

Lucian dropped the phone.

For several seconds, the warehouse was completely silent.

Then he began laughing.

It was not genuine laughter. It was the desperate laughter of a man whose carefully constructed world had suddenly developed a crack.

“You!” he shouted, pointing at Varek. “You did this?”

Varek said nothing.

“How? You have been living like a beggar for three years! You couldn’t even afford a proper apartment!”

“That was the idea.”

Lucian stared at him.

“What?”

“My father left instructions that would activate only if certain conditions were met. You took the company, destroyed my reputation, and spent years trying to force me to reveal information I didn’t even know you were searching for.”

Varek pulled against his restraints.

The chair scraped across the floor.

“But you made one mistake.”

Lucian’s face twisted.

“Which mistake?”

“You believed that because I had lost everything, I had nothing left to fight for.”

Varek leaned forward.

“You were wrong.”

Lucian suddenly drew a second gun from inside his jacket.

“Enough!”

He pointed it directly at Varek’s chest.

“Whatever games you think you’re playing, they end here.”

Varek glanced at the weapon.

Then he looked at the man standing beside Lucian.

The former driver.

“Daniel,” Varek said quietly. “How much did he pay you?”

Daniel’s grip tightened around his gun.

“Don’t listen to him,” Lucian snapped.

“Three million?” Varek continued. “Five million?”

Daniel remained silent.

“Or did he promise you the house my father bought for your mother?”

Daniel’s face changed.

Lucian spun toward him.

“What is he talking about?”

Varek’s smile disappeared.

“Ask him what happened to the money your family was supposed to receive after my father’s death.”

Daniel lowered his weapon slightly.

“Shut up,” Lucian barked.

But Varek continued.

“Your employer told you I was responsible for your father’s dismissal. He told you my family had abandoned you. Yet you never asked why your mother stopped receiving the payments my father personally authorized.”

Daniel’s breathing became uneven.

“How do you know about my mother?”

“Because my father kept records of every person he helped. He never forgot the people who stood beside him when he had nothing.”

Varek looked directly into Daniel’s eyes.

“Lucian stopped those payments the same month my father died.”

Daniel slowly turned toward Lucian.

“Is that true?”

“He’s manipulating you!”

“Is it true?”

Lucian raised his gun.

“Put yours down, Daniel!”

For the first time that night, Daniel looked uncertain.

Varek used that moment to shift his wrists against the restraints.

A small metallic click sounded beneath the chair.

Lucian didn’t notice.

He was too busy trying to regain control of his men.

“You ungrateful fools!” he shouted. “I gave you everything!”

“No,” Varek interrupted. “You rented their loyalty. There’s a difference.”

The restraints snapped open.

Varek’s hands were free.

But he remained seated.

Lucian noticed the movement a second too late.

“Kill him!”

Daniel hesitated.

The other guard raised his weapon.

A gunshot exploded through the warehouse.

Varek moved.

He threw himself sideways as the bullet tore through the back of the chair. Before the guard could fire again, Varek slammed his shoulder into the man’s stomach, sending him crashing into a stack of wooden crates.

Lucian fired twice.

Varek rolled behind a concrete pillar.

“Get him!” Lucian screamed.

Daniel stood frozen.

Varek reached into the inside pocket of his torn shirt and pulled out a small black device.

He pressed a button.

Every light inside the warehouse went out.

Men shouted.

Gunfire erupted.

Someone crashed into a metal table.

Then came the sound of a body hitting the floor.

Three seconds later, emergency lights flickered on.

Varek stood beside the warehouse entrance, holding his injured arm.

Two guards lay unconscious behind him.

Daniel had disappeared.

Lucian remained near the center of the warehouse, breathing heavily, his gun shaking in his hand.

Varek looked at him.

“You should have taken the offer.”

“What offer?”

“The one my lawyers sent you six months ago.”

Lucian’s eyes widened.

Varek continued.

“I was willing to let you keep a portion of the company. I was willing to walk away from the family name and start again.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No. I expect you to understand what happens when you reject mercy from a man who has nothing left to lose.”

Varek took one step forward.

Lucian fired.

The bullet struck the concrete beside Varek’s head.

Before Lucian could pull the trigger again, a red laser dot appeared on his chest.

Then another.

And another.

Lucian froze.

The warehouse doors opened.

Armed security personnel entered from both sides, followed by a tall woman in a dark suit. She carried a tablet in one hand and wore a small silver badge on her jacket.

“Mr. Thorne,” she said, addressing Varek. “The perimeter is secure.”

Varek nodded.

“Where is Daniel?”

“He’s been located. He’s alive and in custody.”

“And the company?”

“The emergency injunction has been enforced. Your uncle’s access has been revoked, and the board has been notified of your return.”

Lucian looked between them.

“Who the hell are you people?”

The woman turned toward him.

“Ms. Evelyn Cross, director of security for Thorne Global Holdings.”

She looked at Varek.

“And this is the rightful controlling beneficiary of the Thorne family estate.”

Lucian stumbled backward.

“No. That’s impossible.”

Evelyn handed Varek a clean handkerchief.

He pressed it against the cut above his eyebrow.

“Take him away,” Varek ordered.

Two guards seized Lucian.

“You can’t do this!” Lucian shouted as they dragged him toward the exit. “I raised you! I protected you! Everything I did was for the family!”

Varek watched him without expression.

“You didn’t protect the family, Uncle.”

Lucian struggled against the guards.

“You’ll regret this! You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into!”

Varek’s gaze sharpened.

“Then perhaps you should have told me the truth twenty years ago.”

Lucian stopped struggling.

For the first time that night, genuine fear crossed his face.

“What truth?”

Varek stepped closer.

“The truth about my mother’s death.”

Lucian’s mouth opened, but no words came out.

Varek noticed.

He noticed the sudden tremor in his uncle’s hands, the way his eyes darted toward the exit, and the terror that replaced his earlier arrogance.

It was the reaction Varek had been waiting for.

His mother had supposedly died in a car accident when he was nine. His father had never discussed the incident, and every official record had been sealed.

Three years ago, while investigating his father’s death, Varek had discovered a missing police report.

Someone had removed it from the archive.

Someone with enough influence to erase an entire investigation.

Now, standing in the warehouse, he finally understood that Lucian knew more than he had ever admitted.

“Who killed my mother?” Varek demanded.

Lucian swallowed.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Wrong answer.”

“I swear!”

Varek seized him by the collar.

“You have ten seconds to give me a name.”

Lucian’s eyes filled with panic.

Then he whispered something that made Evelyn take a step forward.

“Your mother wasn’t killed because of your father.”

Varek went completely still.

“What?”

Lucian looked at him with desperate eyes.

“She was killed because of you.”

For the first time that night, Varek’s composure broke.

The warehouse seemed to fall silent around him.

“What did you say?”

Lucian’s voice trembled.

“Your mother discovered something about your birth. Something your father spent his entire life trying to hide.”

Varek tightened his grip.

“What did she discover?”

Lucian looked toward Evelyn, then back at Varek.

“I can’t tell you here.”

Varek’s expression turned murderous.

“You have spent twenty years lying to me. You betrayed my father, stole my inheritance, and tried to have me killed. You no longer get to decide where the truth is told.”

Lucian leaned closer.

“Then listen carefully, because this is the only warning you’ll ever get.”

His voice dropped to a whisper.

“Your father wasn’t your real father.”

Varek released him.

For several seconds, he could not speak.

Then Lucian laughed weakly.

“Now you understand why I never feared you. Your entire life has been built on a lie.”

The guards dragged Lucian out.

Varek remained motionless.

Evelyn approached cautiously.

“Sir, we need to get you to a hospital.”

He barely heard her.

His father wasn’t his father.

His mother had been killed because of him.

And the man who had destroyed his life had just revealed that the revenge Varek had spent three years preparing might be aimed at the wrong enemy.

His phone vibrated.

An unknown number appeared on the screen.

A message arrived.

If you want to know who your real father is, come to the old Thorne residence alone tonight.

A second message followed.

And Varek, whatever you do, don’t trust Evelyn Cross.

Varek slowly raised his eyes.

Evelyn was standing directly in front of him.

Watching him.

And smiling.
