Varek stared at the photograph.

For the second time that night, he saw his own face staring back at him from a photograph that should not have existed.

The little boy stood behind the hospital door, half-hidden by the frame. He looked no older than five. His dark eyes, narrow nose and small scar near his left eyebrow were impossible to mistake.

It was Varek.

Not a man who looked like him.

Not another child with a similar face.

It was him.

“How old was he?” Victor asked.

Naomi’s voice came through the phone.

“The photograph has no date, but based on the hospital records, it was taken during the same period as Daniel’s transfer.”

Varek enlarged the picture.

“Why was I there?”

“That’s what I’m trying to establish.”

Miriam moved closer. The moment she saw the child’s face, she stepped backwards.

“No.”

Varek turned.

“You recognize me?”

“I recognize the boy.”

“Who was he?”

Miriam pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“He was brought into the private ward with another child. I remember because he wouldn’t speak to anyone.”

“Was he my brother?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then how do you know him?”

Miriam looked at him.

“Because I was told never to leave him alone with Adrian.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“Why?”

“Adrian was always trying to get close to him. The boy would follow him everywhere, but the doctors kept separating them.”

Varek looked at the photograph again.

“Was I that boy?”

Miriam shook her head.

“The boy in the photograph was not called Varek.”

“What was he called?”

“Subject Five.”

The words landed heavily.

Varek’s fingers tightened around the phone.

He had spent weeks discovering that Subject Five was his designation in the original Black Ledger system. But he had never imagined that the number had been attached to him while he was still a child.

“Who brought me there?” he asked.

Miriam hesitated.

“Grace.”

Victor looked at her sharply.

“Grace Cross?”

“Yes. She brought the boy in herself.”

Varek stared at the photograph.

“Why would she bring me into a hospital and then hide my identity?”

“Because the hospital wasn’t a normal hospital. It was where children were moved, renamed and prepared for their assigned positions in the Black Ledger.”

Victor shook his head.

“And Adrian was there too?”

“Yes.”

“Then why does Richard keep saying Adrian killed a child?”

Miriam lowered her eyes.

“Because Adrian was the only person who tried to stop what happened.”

Before Varek could ask another question, Naomi interrupted.

“Wait. I’m accessing another record.”

There was the sound of typing.

Then she spoke again.

“I found an incident report connected to Daniel’s transfer. It says there was a security breach at the private nursery. Three children disappeared from their assigned rooms.”

“Three?” Varek asked.

“Yes. Daniel, Subject Five and an unnamed male child.”

Varek looked at Victor.

“Who was the third child?”

“The report doesn’t say.”

“Was Adrian involved?”

“His name appears as the witness. Richard was listed as the person in charge of the transfer.”

Miriam shook her head.

“That cannot be right.”

Varek turned to her.

“Why?”

“Because Richard wasn’t supposed to be in the nursery that night.”

“Who was?”

She looked at the photograph.

“Jonathan.”

Victor’s face changed.

“Jonathan Thorne?”

Miriam nodded.

“He was the only person with authority to enter the original nursery without permission from Alistair.”

Naomi spoke quickly.

“That could explain why the original Black Ledger requires Jonathan’s biometric identity.”

Varek looked at the screen.

“Can you find out what happened to the third child?”

“I’m trying. But the incident report has been altered. Someone removed the final page.”

“Find the original.”

“I’ll need access to the physical archive.”

Varek glanced at the room around him.

The old estate.

The place where so many lies had been buried.

“There’s another archive beneath this building,” he said. “We haven’t searched every room.”

“Don’t go anywhere alone,” Naomi warned.

He ended the call.

Victor immediately stepped forward.

“We’re going together.”

Varek nodded.

Miriam remained where she stood.

“Before you go, there’s something you need to understand.”

Varek turned.

“What?”

“That boy in the photograph may not have been the only child called Subject Five.”

Victor frowned.

“How is that possible?”

“The original system assigned numbers to positions, not permanent identities. When a child disappeared, another child could be given the same number.”

Varek stared at her.

“So there could have been more than one Subject Five?”

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“I don’t know.”

Varek looked at the photograph once more.

For the first time, he wondered whether the people who had spent years telling him who he was had ever known the truth themselves.

⸻

The entrance to the lower archive was hidden behind a wooden panel in the old estate’s eastern corridor.

Varek had discovered it earlier, but he had not been able to open the second door.

This time, he noticed a small circular opening beside the lock.

He removed the pendant he had taken from the private archive and placed it against the opening.

A faint click followed.

The door unlocked.

Victor looked at him.

“How many hidden rooms does this family have?”

“Apparently enough to bury an entire generation.”

They entered.

The staircase descended into darkness. Varek switched on his phone’s flashlight, and Victor followed closely behind.

At the bottom was a narrow corridor lined with metal cabinets.

Unlike the upper archive, this room had not been abandoned. The floor was clean, and the lights came on as they approached.

Someone had been there recently.

Varek stopped.

“Look at the floor.”

Victor crouched.

There were fresh marks near the cabinets, as if someone had dragged a heavy object across the room.

“Someone came here before us.”

Varek opened the nearest cabinet.

Inside were files arranged by year.

He pulled out one marked PRIVATE NURSERY — NIGHT TRANSFER.

The first page contained a list of names.

Adrian Thorne.

Daniel.

Subject Five.

Unknown Male Child.

And beneath them, another name.

MATTHEW CROSS.

Victor leaned closer.

“Matthew again.”

Varek turned the page.

There were four photographs.

The first showed Adrian standing beside the hospital bed.

The second showed the little boy called Daniel.

The third showed the child with Varek’s face.

The fourth showed a young boy sitting alone on the floor.

His head was lowered, but his face was visible.

Victor went completely still.

“That’s me.”

Varek looked at him.

“You’re sure?”

Victor nodded.

“I remember that room.”

Varek studied him.

“You remember being here?”

Victor touched the photograph.

“Not everything. Just pieces. A white room. Someone shouting. A woman telling me not to cry.”

“Who was the woman?”

“I don’t know.”

Victor turned the photograph over.

There was a handwritten note on the back.

SECOND CHILD RECOVERED. FIRST CHILD STILL MISSING. THIRD CHILD MUST NOT BE RETURNED.

Varek read it twice.

“Which child was recovered?”

Victor shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Varek checked the file again.

The final page contained three columns.

CHILD ONE — STATUS: MISSING.

CHILD TWO — STATUS: RECOVERED.

CHILD THREE — STATUS: TRANSFERRED.

Below the entries were three signatures.

Jonathan Thorne.

Grace Cross.

Adrian Thorne.

Varek stared at Adrian’s signature.

“Why would Adrian sign this?”

Victor studied the page.

“Maybe he was forced.”

“Or maybe he knew exactly what was happening.”

Before Victor could answer, a metallic sound came from the other end of the corridor.

Both men turned.

Someone was inside the archive.

Varek switched off his flashlight.

A figure walked past the cabinets.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

“You’re not supposed to be here.”

Varek stepped out.

“Matthew.”

The man stopped.

He was dressed in a dark shirt and trousers. His face was partly hidden by the shadows, but Varek recognized him from the video.

Matthew Cross.

The man who had called him little brother.

Matthew smiled faintly.

“You found the photographs.”

Varek moved closer.

“Who was the child behind the door?”

Matthew looked at the file in his hand.

“You.”

“Why was I there?”

“Because you were supposed to be transferred with the others.”

“Who stopped it?”

Matthew’s smile disappeared.

“Adrian.”

Varek’s expression changed.

Matthew continued.

“He refused to let them take you. He begged them to leave you alone.”

“Then why does Richard accuse him of killing a child?”

“Because Richard needed someone to blame.”

Victor stepped forward.

“Who was Daniel?”

Matthew looked at him.

“The boy your brother was supposed to save.”

Varek’s eyes narrowed.

“Was he the child in the bed?”

“Yes.”

“Did he die?”

Matthew remained silent.

Varek grabbed his shirt.

“Answer me!”

Matthew didn’t resist.

“Daniel was alive when he left the hospital.”

“Where did he go?”

“That is the question Richard has spent twenty years trying to bury.”

Varek released him.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel was not supposed to survive. His existence threatened the original inheritance arrangement.”

Victor frowned.

“Then why did Richard take him?”

“Richard didn’t take him. Jonathan did.”

Varek stepped back.

“You’re saying Jonathan rescued the child?”

Matthew nodded.

“And Grace helped him.”

Varek looked down at the photograph again.

The records were beginning to form a pattern, but every answer created another question.

“Who was the third child?”

Matthew looked directly at him.

“That child was never supposed to exist.”

Before Varek could respond, the lights suddenly went out.

A loud bang echoed through the corridor.

Victor grabbed Varek’s arm.

“Get down!”

A gunshot followed.

Varek dropped behind a cabinet.

When the emergency lights came on, Matthew was gone.

Only the open file remained on the floor.

Varek picked it up.

A small envelope had fallen from between the pages.

His name was written across it.

VAREK THORNE.

He opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed a newborn baby in a hospital cot.

Beside the cot stood Eleanor.

But Eleanor wasn’t holding the baby.

She was standing beside a woman whose face had been crossed out.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.

THE CHILD YOU WERE SENT TO REPLACE WAS NEVER DEAD.

Varek read the words again.

Then his phone rang.

Naomi.

He answered.

“Naomi?”

Her voice was shaking.

“Varek, I found the original transfer record.”

“What does it say?”

“The child called Daniel was transferred under another identity. But that’s not the worst part.”

“What is it?”

“I traced the signature on the death certificate. It wasn’t Adrian’s.”

“Whose was it?”

Naomi went silent for a moment.

Then she whispered:

“It belongs to you.”

Varek stared at the phone.

“That is impossible.”

“I compared it with your signature on the Black Ledger documents. The handwriting is identical.”

Victor moved closer.

“What did she say?”

Naomi continued.

“Varek, someone used your identity to declare Daniel dead. And the record was signed before you were old enough to write your own name.”

A cold silence filled the archive.

Then Naomi added one final detail.

“The system didn’t just register you as dead before birth. It also registered you as the person responsible for Daniel’s death.”

Varek looked at the photograph in his hand.

For twenty-five years, someone had been building a crime around a child who had never been allowed to know his own name.

And now that child was standing inside the room where the lie began.
