Chapter 10: The Price of Protection
The air in the café didn't just grow cold; it solidified. The shadows that had been mere stains on the floor were now rising, undulating like dark, viscous oil, their fingers elongating into jagged spears directed toward Putri’s throat.
"Get down!" Kirill lunged, his hand slamming into the table and sending his mug spiraling to the floor.
Putri didn't argue. She threw herself beneath the heavy wooden table, her breath hitching in a sob. "Kirill, what is that? What is happening?"
"Stay under there!" Kirill yelled, his voice cracking with the strain. He stood alone in the center of the dark vortex, his heart thudding like a dying motor against his ribs.
Loki’s voice didn't mock him this time. It was a low, urgent hiss. Kid, you’re out of time. If you don't anchor this space now, the shadows will tear her apart.
"I know!" Kirill gasped, clutching his chest. His fingers burned as if he were holding a live electrical wire. He looked at the swirling mass of darkness. He didn't just need to fight; he needed to be a bulwark. He needed to be a fortress.
"I am a sanctuary," Kirill shouted, his voice vibrating with a power that wasn't his own, but a cold, borrowed force from the abyss. "Nothing reaches her! This space is sealed!"
The violet light erupted from his veins, so bright it scorched the eyes. It wasn't the jagged, chaotic flickering from before. It was a solid, dome-like wall of translucent purple energy that hummed with a sound like a thousand bowed cellos. The shadows slammed against the barrier, hissing as they disintegrated into harmless smoke upon contact.
Kirill screamed. The pain was absolute. It felt as though his bones were being ground into powder and his blood was being replaced by molten glass. The "tax" was no longer a debt; it was an execution.
"Kirill! Stop!" Putri’s muffled voice echoed from beneath the table, filled with agonizing terror. "You’re hurting yourself! Stop!"
"I'm fine!" Kirill choked out, his vision flashing white. "I'm... I'm holding it!"
"You're not fine, you idiot!" Loki shrieked in his mind. "You’re overdrawing your entire life force! If you don't release that energy, you’ll burn out in seconds!"
"I don't care," Kirill wheezed, his nose beginning to stream with blood that hit the floor in thick, dark droplets. "They can't... they can't get to her."
The shadows pulsed, forming a grotesque, faceless head that pressed against the barrier. It looked directly at Kirill, its void-eyes mocking his sacrifice. The barrier groaned, the violet light dimming under the assault of the entity’s sheer, oppressive weight.
"Is that it?" Kirill spat, blood bubbling on his lips. "Is that all you've got?"
"Kirill, please!" Putri scrambled out from under the table, ignoring the danger. She reached for him, her hand passing through the edge of the violet field. She cried out as a stinging jolt of static threw her backward, but she didn't stop. She crawled toward him, her face wet with tears. "Stop this! I don't care about the shadows! I care about you!"
"Don't touch me!" Kirill yelled, stumbling back. His legs wouldn't hold him anymore. He hit the floor, his knees cracking against the tiles, but the dome remained—a shimmering, fragile bubble of violet light protecting them from the encroaching dark.
"You’re killing yourself for a girl, Kirill," the shadow-thing’s voice didn't come from a mouth; it resonated directly in his skull, cold and hollow. "How poetic. How human."
"I am... more than human," Kirill lied, the words tasting like ash and iron. He pushed every remaining scrap of his vitality into the shield, willing the universe to believe that he was an immovable object. "I am the end of your reach!"
The barrier flared with a blinding intensity, expanding outward with a shockwave that blew the windows of the café outward. Shards of glass rained down like diamonds, and for a moment, the dark vortex shattered. The shadows were shredded, turning into wisps of harmless grey fog that drifted away into the afternoon breeze.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Kirill didn't stand. He couldn't. He slumped forward, his forehead resting on the cool, debris-strewn tile. The violet light died, leaving him in the dim, dusty light of the wrecked café. His chest felt as empty as a dry well.
"Kirill!"
Putri was there in an instant, sliding across the shattered glass to reach him. Her hands were shaking as she cupped his face. "Oh my god. Oh my god, Kirill, look at me."
He tried to open his eyes, but they felt like they were weighted with lead. "Is... is it gone?"
"Yes, it's gone," she sobbed, pressing her forehead against his. "It’s gone. You’re safe. Everyone’s gone. It's just us."
"Good," he whispered, his consciousness fraying at the edges. "I told you... I told you I'd keep you safe."
"You’re a monster," she cried, but there was no malice in it, only raw, shattering grief. "Why did you do that? You’re bleeding everywhere."
Kirill tried to force a smile, but the movement only caused a fresh, sharp pain in his jaw. He could feel the cold, heavy hand of exhaustion pulling him down into the dark, a place where no lies could reach him.
"The assembly," he murmured, his voice fading. "I... I still have to..."
"Forget the assembly!" Putri shouted, looking around frantically. "Someone! Help! Please, someone call an ambulance!"
"No," Kirill gripped her wrist, his strength failing rapidly. "No ambulance. They'll... they'll see. They'll know."
"Let them know! You’re dying!"
"I'm not dying," he lied. He pushed the conviction into his gut, forcing his heart to give one more, agonizing beat, despite the overwhelming urge to stop. "I'm just... tired."
He pulled his hand away from her, tucking it into his jacket to hide the fact that his skin was turning a translucent, sickly shade of grey.
"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice barely audible.
"Me?" she wiped her eyes, her gaze full of terrified love. "I'm fine. You saved me. You actually did it."
"Good," he said again, the word almost a ghost.
He leaned his head back against the wall, his eyelids fluttering. The adrenaline was fading, leaving behind a cold, biting numbness that crept from his toes up to his heart.
You idiot, Loki whispered, his voice sounding tired and strangely human. You traded the last of your shelf life for five minutes of peace. Do you have any idea how much of you is left?
Kirill didn't answer. He couldn't spare the breath.
"Stay with me, Kirill," Putri whispered, cradling his head in her lap. "Please, just stay awake. Look at me."
"I'm here," he promised.
He reached out, his hand trembling, and brushed a stray lock of hair from her face. It was the most honest thing he had done in weeks. As his vision turned to static, he turned his head away from her, toward the darkest corner of the wrecked café.
He coughed, a violent, rattling sound that vibrated through his entire frame. He felt the hot, metallic surge of blood rising in his throat. With a final, desperate effort, he turned his face into his sleeve, muffling the sound as he coughed up a dark, thick bloom of blood.
He wiped his mouth quickly with the back of his hand, his eyes wide and unfocused, staring into the shadow of the broken counter.
"Kirill?" Putri asked, her voice hitching. "What was that? Are you... are you okay?"
Kirill leaned his head back, closing his eyes. He forced his breathing to even out, masking the ragged, broken sound of his own failing lungs.
"Just a little... dizzy," he whispered, his voice as steady as he could make it. "I think I’m just going to close my eyes for a minute. Just a minute. Okay?"
"Okay," she whispered, her voice tight with panic. "Just a minute. But stay with me. Please, Kirill. Just stay."
"I'm here," he said, though the words were slipping away from him.
He drifted, the darkness finally, mercifully, taking him. He didn't see the way the shadows in the corner of the room began to coalesce aga
in, watching him with patient, hungry eyes, waiting for the architect of the lie to finally wake up.

Chapter 9 : Caught in the Middle
The hallway felt like a tomb that had suddenly been unlocked, the stale air rushing back in to fill the void where the girl had been standing. Kirill leaned against the lockers, his chest heaving, his fingers brushing the spot where his ID had been only seconds before."She took it," Kirill whispered, his voice sounding thin, like dry parchment. "She just… reached in and pulled the identity right out of my pocket."Putri reached out, grabbing his shoulders and forcing him to look at her. Her eyes were wide, scanning his face for any sign of his usual bravado. "Kirill, stop it. We need to go. We need to get you somewhere safe, not just a room with a lock on it.""Safe?" Kirill let out a hollow, jagged laugh. "There isn't a safe corner in this entire building. She knows, Putri. She knows exactly what I am.""Then we’ll figure it out," she said, her voice dropping into a firm, insistent tone. "But not here. You’re shaking. Look at your hands."Kirill looked down. His fingers were dancing
Chapter 8 : The Skeptic
The hallway felt smaller than it had seconds ago. The fluorescent lights seemed to dim, flickering with a rhythmic, dying pulse that mirrored Kirill’s own erratic heartbeat. Putri was still gripping his sleeve, her knuckles white, her breathing shallow and frantic."Kirill, answer me," she hissed, her voice barely audible over the sudden, ringing silence of the corridor. "Who was that? What did she mean by 'rewrite the script'?"Kirill didn’t look at her. He couldn't. His gaze was locked on the empty corner where the girl had vanished, where the air still seemed to carry that lingering, ozone-sharp scent of a storm that refused to break. "I don’t know. I swear to you, Putri, I’ve never seen her before in my life.""She knew," Putri insisted, her grip tightening until her fingernails dug into his skin. "She knew about the table. She knew about the ceiling. She’s not just some random student, Kirill. She’s... she’s dangerous.""You think I don’t know that?" Kirill snapped, the words jum
Chapter 7 : Loki's Hidden Hand
The corridor felt like a tunnel that kept stretching the faster Kirill walked. His lungs were burning, each inhalation tasting of ozone and stale, recycled air. Beside him, Putri’s grip on his arm was tight, a silent reminder that he was currently tethered to reality only by her concern."You need to stop walking," Putri said, her voice sharp with worry. "You’re gray, Kirill. You look like you’re going to collapse right here.""I can’t stop," Kirill muttered, his boots dragging slightly on the linoleum. "If I stop, the momentum dies. If the momentum dies, the narrative falls apart.""Forget the narrative for one second! You’re bleeding. You’re literally shaking.""I’m fine," he lied, the words tasting of iron. "The assembly is tomorrow. I have to be ready.""You’re going to be in a hospital bed by tomorrow if you keep this up."Kirill didn’t answer. He couldn’t. Every ounce of his focus was diverted toward keeping his knees locked and his vision from splintering into that violet, jagg
Chapter 6 : The Public Test
The fluorescent lights of the infirmary ceiling buzzed, a low, rhythmic drone that felt like a drill against Kirill’s skull. His hands, still stained with the lingering ghost of the violet energy that had thrown the table, lay limp on the scratchy hospital sheets."You need to stop," Putri said. Her voice was steady, but her knuckles were white where she gripped the back of the plastic chair. "You’re killing yourself for a bunch of kids who only care because they're scared."Kirill didn't open his eyes. "They aren't just scared, Putri. They’re hungry. And right now, I’m the only meal in town.""That’s a sick way to put it.""It’s an accurate way to put it," Kirill retorted, his voice raspy. "If I don't give them this, they’ll turn on me. They’ll look for someone else to blame for the cracks in the sky, and trust me, they won't find a savior. They’ll find a monster.""You're acting like you don't have a choice," she whispered, leaning over the bed. "Just tell them it was an accident. T
Chapter 5 : Fame's Sharp Edge
The sterile white light of the infirmary ceiling felt like a physical weight pressing down on Kirill’s eyelids. Every time he tried to focus, the fluorescent hum seemed to sync with the dull, thumping ache in his chest—a constant reminder of the price he had paid for his latest performance.Putri was still sitting there, her expression caught in a fragile balance between awe and absolute terror. She hadn't moved since he had spoken, since he had woven that final, chilling layer of narrative around them."You’re lying, right?" Putri’s voice was thin, trembling at the edges. "You’re just... you’re trying to scare me so I’ll leave you alone. That’s it, isn't it?"Kirill shifted, the IV line tugging at his skin. He looked at her, and the cold sensation in his gut—the one Loki had described as the 'tax'—curled tighter. "Do you honestly think I’d go through this much physical agony just for a bit of privacy, Putri?""I don't know what to think," she whispered, leaning back until her chair c
