Lucian's world screeched to a halt as he listened to all the insults and accusations that his mother-in-law was saying against him. He clutched his chest tightly as he took in shallow, deep breaths.

This wasn't the first time he had been downgraded, but because the woman whose life he had saved three years ago was also doing the same thing as her relatives.

"Mum, I think that's enough. Him having a plate of paella isn't a crime. Is it?" said Aria, meeting her mother's gaze.

"Who gave you the right to talk to Mum in such a tone? If your godforsaken husband is damn hungry, why not ask him for money?" Muna sneered, her venomous eyes piercing through Lucian.

"Oh, I forgot your poor little husband can't even afford a bottle of water, not to talk about a plate of food."

Lucian's jaw clenched, his knuckles turning white. Muna was Aria's cousin, a girl who took a certain thrill in humiliating him and reminding him of how pathetic and worthless he was.

"After everything he's done for you, is this how you're going to repay him? He was the one who saved you and Mum from those unknown creatures in the woods... and you—" Aria couldn't continue her statement as she broke down in tears.

This was just too much for her to bear, just because the love of her life, her husband, was poor and had nothing.

"Who cares?" Muna said, rolling her eyes. "I didn't force this lowlife of a man to come to my rescue. He just showed off the little power he had."

Elle, Aria's mum, raised her hand, signalling Muna to stop. She had a white paper in her hands, and her eyes were filled with malice and hatred. She stared daggers at Lucian.

Her eyes were the perfect definition of 'if looks could kill'.

"I never accepted this marriage, and neither will I accept it now or later. If not for the stupid decision that my sweet daughter made, I wouldn't have ever called a layman like you my son-in-law. Never!" Elle spat with disgust as she vividly remembered telling Aria not to marry him.

"Not only could he not afford a three-square meal, but he could not put you to bed." She sneered, directing her gaze towards Aria before turning to Lucian. "You're impotent!" She accused him without knowing the full truth.

Her voice resonated in the living room, where every member of the Reigns family was present.

They all burst out into hilarious laughter as they watched the drama before them unfold.

Aria looked at her husband, but the look in his eyes was telling her not to say whatever was on her mind. She stared at him with pity. She lowered her head and mumbled, "But I'm pregnant." She said it more to herself, but little did she know that everyone present had heard her.

"Even if you're pregnant, I don't want you staying with this non-entity."

"She's my wife. She gets to say whether she wants to stay with me or not," Lucian fired back. He wouldn't bear it if he were to be separated from his wife, even for a second.

And before he knew it, the most intense pain he had ever experienced in his entire existence came across his cheek. 'Did he just slap me?' he thought as he held his cheek in pain.

He looked up and saw Mr Reign, Aria's dad, looking at him like a mundane. "Mr Reign, you—"

"Just shut your mouth, you worthless, good-for-nothing commoner. How dare you raise your voice at my beloved wife? Just how could you?" Mr Reign's harsh words came out.

"I don't know what my sweet and good-looking daughter saw in you. A dragon keeper like my daughter married a weakling like you. She deserves a strong and powerful man who will protect her when the war between humans and vampires breaks out," he told him sternly, without a care in the world.

The dragon had been kept for years and protected by the descendants of the Ashrate, which is now currently known as the Reign family.

They had kept the dragon safe for the unforeseen circumstances that would actually break out one day.

As soon as Mr Reign said those words, Lucian wanted to explain to him that they all needed to relax. He could protect her.

There would be no such war between vampires and humans. Muna chuckled, an evil smile plastered across her face.

"How can a weakling and a poor fellow like him protect Aria against vampires of all creatures?"

The family all stared at Lucian with disgust written all over their faces.

Lucian swallowed deeply, turning his gaze towards Muna while he cleaned his tear-stained cheek with the back of his hand. "Is that the way to talk to your elder, Muna?" Lucian asked.

"Hey," Muna said. "You ought to address me properly. A lowlife like you can't call me by my name."

Lucian turned his back, about to ascend the stairs that led to his and his wife's room at their family house, when suddenly, his mother-in-law's voice halted him in his tracks.

"Stop there! Where do you think you're heading to?" Elle voiced out. "Aria, this is your last chance. You will have to choose between your so-called husband and your family," she told Aria, stretching a white paper towards her.

Confused, Aria couldn't stop herself from asking what was written in the paper. "What's that, Mum?"

"Divorce papers."

"What?" Lucian was the one who asked. Shock and worry were etched on his handsome, chiseled face.

"Mother-in-law, I hope that's fake because I'm not going to divorce my wife. Can't you see that she's pregnant? She needs me the most in this condition," Lucian reasoned out. But none of the family members bought his explanation.

"Why do you have such a mentality? Who told you that we can't take care of her? With money, you can do extraordinary things. What possible thing can't money afford, or do you want to compare yourself with money?" Lucian heard Muna say as she covered her mouth with her hand, unable to stop her laughter.

"But I'm her husband, and I can't... she needs me. You can't just tell her to divorce me out of the blue. We are..."

Lucian suddenly trailed off. He was short of words. He didn't know what to say or what else to do. Right now, he looked so devastated and helpless.

He had never felt this helpless and useless in his entire life. All the power he had was just useless right now.

He knew he wouldn't be able to survive it if he were to be separated from his beloved wife because he knew deep down within him that she was his fated one. The one he was meant to be with forever.

But what could he do? Should he use force? No... no, that would be too ridiculous. He brushed the thought out of his mind as he used his long fingers to brush his inky dark hair backwards. His pupils were dilating.

His breath caught in his throat when Ariana immediately took the divorce paper from her mother's hand. No, that couldn't possibly happen. He mumbled to himself as he rushed towards Aria, then halted in his tracks.

"I wi

ll sign the divorce papers, Mom," she said.

"What do you mean by you can't help us? We are looking for a suitable man for my precious Aria.""I know." Lawrence faked a smile. "We don't really need the dragon now. I'm sure you will help the Birla family with it when the time comes."Mr Reign's face turned sour after hearing what Lawrence said. Is this man crazy? He can't help him with the dragon."I know it might be hard for you, but please consider this the first favour I will be asking of the Reign family since we got to know each other. I know you won't fail me. Am I right?" Lawrence told him firmly."Alright, since you need a dragon, I will help with it, but definitely not Violent. I will give you the others," Mr Reign said.Mr Reign continued, explaining his reasons to Lawrence. "The only reason I won't give you Violent is that, for hundreds of decades, no one has been able to summon it. We thought the poor thing had gone into hiding."Lucian no longer felt hurt by the harsh words Elle was throwing at him.The laughter and chatter that once filled the hall died down instantly the moment Lucian stepped foot into the Reign mansion. Everyone's eyes narrowed at him suspiciously.Lucian stood rigid. He had come to talk to the Reign family for the last time before his departure to Aurelia."I just came here for the last time. This will be my last time setting foot in this house," Lucian informed them, looking at each one of them with an emotionless face."Oh, that's nice. You have actually made the right decision once in your lifetime. You should get going already," Mr Reign said slyly, turning towards Lucian."You're right. I have made the right decision. A decision I should have made a very long time ago," Lucian answered with a smirk.Mr Reign's face darkened. His eyes narrowed as he sensed the authority in Lucian's tone."Then what are you still doing her

Are you afraid that the guest might laugh at your disgusting and poor outfit?" Elle sneered.Lucian gritted his teeth in frustration. He had come to the conclusion that he now hated Elle to the core, but he was too tired to argue with her. Remaining silent, he endured her taunts.Elle observed his lack of response but still continued."Why are you suddenly playing dumb? You're the type who challenges others. What happened? Did a cat cut your tongue?" Elle questioned him mockingly. She looked at her daughter, then returned her gaze to Lucian."Why are you staring at Aria like that? I can sm

Lucian looked at his Aria with confusion. He never thought Aria would sign the divorce papers after everything they had been through together. Never in his wildest dreams had he anticipated that she would be easily fooled by her family into divorcing him."Lucian, I... I..." Aria swallowed hard. She wasn't able to explain to him why she had taken such a drastic step because she feared he wouldn't be able to accept it. Nevertheless, she needed to let him know why she had signed the papers."Actually, Lucian..." Her voice was low as she began explaining to him that her dad had made a promise. "Dad has secured our child's future. He said that if I don't divorce you, he won't assist us. He has secured our child's future.""Are you listening to yourself, Aria? Who told you that I can't take care of our child? Have you also been seeing me as a poor, useless guy?""No, Lucian. You're getting it all wrong.
