✦ ─── ❖ ─── ✦

"The World Scar did not merely split the heavens...

It split destiny itself.

From that day onward, every child born in Elyndra lived for a single moment.

Awakening Day."

_Chronicle of the World Scar: Chapter 1

✦ ─── ❖ ─── ✦

*******

Dawn had arrived quietly.

Golden sunlight spilled across the weathered rooftops of Ashvale Village, bathing the sleepy settlement in warm amber as the first rays climbed above the distant Ashveil Mountains. Thin trails of smoke drifted lazily from stone chimneys while merchants pushed open the shutters of their wooden stalls, preparing for another day of trade along the narrow cobbled streets.

Nestled upon the western frontier of Valewind Province, Ashvale was little more than a speck on the vast map of the Asterion Dominion—one of the great human nations that stood proudly within the world of Elyndra.

It was the kind of village most travelers forgot the moment they left.

Small.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

The sort of place where everyone knew one another's name, where children chased each other through the streets until sunset, and where the loudest argument most days was over whose goats had wandered into whose fields.

Yet despite its unremarkable appearance...

Ashvale stood closer to humanity's greatest triumph—

And its greatest nightmare—

Than most villages ever dared.

Beyond the towering Ashveil Mountains...

Beyond forests untouched by civilization...

Loomed the World Scar.

Three centuries ago, reality itself had been torn apart.

No warning.

No prophecy.

No divine proclamation.

The sky had simply split open.

From that impossible wound emerged worlds beyond human understanding—realms inhabited by monsters, forgotten races, ancient civilizations, and horrors that no language could properly describe.

Humanity had nearly perished.

Kingdoms fell.

Empires vanished.

Entire civilizations were swallowed by endless tides of blood before mankind awakened the power that would forever change its fate.

Genesis.

The miracle that allowed ordinary humans to become Vessels.

Since that day, humanity had fought without rest, carving a path through the countless worlds hidden within the World Scar.

Three hundred years of war.

Three hundred years of sacrifice.

Three hundred years...

To conquer only nine worlds.

Those nine worlds had become humanity's expanding frontier.

Thriving civilizations now stood where battlefields once lay. Massive Genesis Gates connected them to Elyndra, allowing soldiers, merchants, scholars, and explorers to travel between conquered worlds.

Every conquered world granted humanity another step toward survival.

Another fifty levels.

Another chance to stand against whatever waited beyond.

And beyond the Ninth World...

Only silence remained.

At least...

That was what humanity believed.

Ashvale itself had never produced many Vessels.

Most of its people lived quiet, honest lives harvesting the silver-barked Ashwood forests that blanketed the surrounding mountains. Their timber was prized throughout the Dominion, forming the foundations of Genesis catalysts, weapons, and countless tools used by Vessels across the continent.

Life here followed the same rhythm every year.

Simple.

Peaceful.

Predictable.

Which was precisely why...

Today felt different.

Today...

Was Awakening Day.

The single most important day in the life of every eighteen-year-old across Elyndra.

The day destiny finally revealed itself.

The day dreams either took flight...

Or shattered forever.

The usually quiet streets overflowed with excitement.

Groups of academy students hurried toward the village square in freshly pressed uniforms, their conversations tumbling over one another with barely restrained enthusiasm.

"I heard Cedric's family already prepared a banquet!"

"I don't care what I awaken—as long as it can fly!"

"I want a Machine Genesis!"

"Imagine getting a Dragon Genesis!"

The others burst into laughter.

"Keep dreaming."

Hope spread like wildfire.

Parents stood outside their homes with proud smiles.

Shopkeepers called out blessings as students passed by.

Even the old veterans leaning against storefronts wore expressions softened by nostalgia as they watched another generation step toward destiny.

Only one among them remained unusually quiet.

An elderly man leaned upon a weathered wooden cane near the entrance of a small bakery.

Unlike everyone else...

His eyes weren't following the excited students.

Instead...

He slowly scanned the village itself.

As though waiting...

For someone who hadn't appeared yet.

Far from the bustling streets of Ashvale...

Near the village's quiet eastern edge...

Stood a tiny wooden house.

Calling it small was being generous.

Its roof had been repaired so many times that it resembled a patchwork quilt stitched together by hope rather than skill. The faded blue paint had long surrendered to age, while one stubborn window refused to close properly no matter how many times it was fixed.

Yet despite everything...

The little home was spotless.

Every floorboard had been swept clean.

Every piece of furniture carefully maintained.

Someone had taken care of this place.

Loved it.

Inside...

Unlike the lively streets beyond its walls...

Someone was still sound asleep.

A young man lay sprawled across his bed like he'd lost a fierce battle against sleep itself.

One leg dangled lazily over the edge of the mattress.

His blanket had somehow found its way onto the floor.

Messy black hair completely hid his eyes.

A faint trail of drool escaped the corner of his lips.

He smacked them happily.

"...Five..."

"...No..."

"...Make it six..."

Outside the room...

A patient voice echoed through the hallway.

"Kalexi."

Silence.

"...Five more minutes..."

The voice sighed.

Then—

*KNOCK! KNOCK!*

"Kalexi."

Still nothing.

Another knock followed.

This one louder.

*KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!*

"..."

Nothing.

A vein twitched across the older man's forehead.

Then—

*BANG! BANG! BANG!*

"KALEXI!!"

"You incompetent child!"

"It's already broad daylight!"

"Open this door before I open it myself!"

The only response...

Was soft snoring.

The old man slowly inhaled.

"..."

"...Very well."

The door creaked open.

Standing in the doorway was a weathered, middle-aged man carrying... a frying pan.

Not a weapon.

Just... a perfectly ordinary wooden frying pan.

He stared silently at the sleeping disaster sprawled across the bed.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Then—

*WHACK!!*

"AAGHHHH!"

Kalexi shot upright so fast he nearly launched himself off the bed. Both hands immediately grabbed the back of his head.

"DAD!!"

The older man calmly nodded.

"Excellent."

"You're alive."

"I was beginning to have doubts."

Kalexi stared at him with utter disbelief.

"..."

"...You just hit me with a frying pan."

"A small one."

"...THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT BETTER!"

"I considered using the larger one."

"..."

Kalexi slowly pointed toward the ceiling.

"I'd like everyone to know.....I'm being abused."

Daren folded his arms.

"The neighbors already know."

"They told me to hit harder."

Kalexi gasped.

"..."

"I've been betrayed by the entire village."

"You still owe Mrs. Nora three apple pies."

"..."

"...That explains everything."

Daren's lips twitched. He tried to hold it in, but failed spectacularly. A grin spread across his weathered face.

Kalexi sighed dramatically while rubbing the sore spot on his head. A crimson bead earring hanging from his left ear swayed gently as he moved.

"You know..."

"I was having the greatest dream of my life."

"And you ruined it."

"Oh?" Daren leaned casually against the doorframe. "I'm listening."

Kalexi puffed out his chest. "I awakened an Elite Genesis."

His father nodded thoughtfully. "Very impressive. And then?"

"I became the strongest Vessel in history."

"Reasonable."

"I also became unimaginably rich."

"Expected."

"I bought you the biggest mansion in all of Elyndra."

"Hmm."

"I hired over a hundred servants."

"I see."

"I bought ten dragons."

Daren blinked. "...Why ten?"

Kalexi shrugged as though the answer was obvious. "I wanted eleven. But apparently, dragons are expensive."

For one long heartbeat, father and son simply stared at one another.

Then, Daren burst into laughter. A deep, warm, unrestrained laugh echoed throughout the tiny room.

Kalexi didn't laugh. He simply watched him, smiling.

There it was. That laugh. He hadn't heard it nearly enough over the past few years. Life simply hadn't been kind enough to give them many reasons.

Eventually, Daren wiped the corner of one eye. "You've got a dangerous imagination."

Kalexi stretched lazily before swinging his legs off the bed. "That's because today's the day."

His voice softened. For the first time that morning, the joking disappeared. He stood up, stretching until his back cracked pleasantly. A smile slowly formed across his face.

"I'm finally eighteen... Dad."

The laughter faded, but the smile remained. Only, something else joined it. Hope, pride, and fear, all tangled together behind tired eyes.

"...Yeah," he nodded quietly. "...Today's the day."

Their home wasn't much. Just two small bedrooms, a cramped kitchen, and a roof that had been patched so many times neither of them could remember what the original looked like.

The dining table leaned noticeably to one side. Years ago, one of its legs had snapped clean off. Instead of replacing it, Daren had simply stacked three old books beneath it.

"It still works." That had been his only explanation.

Kalexi secretly believed those books deserved medals for carrying the table for so many years.

The aroma of breakfast drifted through the tiny kitchen. Fresh bread, vegetable stew, and two fried eggs.

His stomach growled immediately. Loudly.

Kalexi looked down at it. "...Traitor."

Daren heard him. He simply smiled. Neither commented.

Kalexi pulled out his chair and sat down as Daren placed a steaming plate before him. He stared, then blinked.

"...Two eggs?"

His father took his own seat. "We're celebrating."

"You usually give me one."

"We're celebrating."

"...Dad."

"We're celebrating."

Kalexi narrowed his eyes suspiciously. "...You're giving me yours again."

"I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about."

"You've never beaten me in an argument."

"I wasn't arguing."

"You were lying."

"I was attempting optimism."

Kalexi sighed. Without another word, he picked up one of the eggs, reached across the table, and quietly placed it back onto his father's plate.

Daren stared at the egg, then at his son. "...Mutiny?"

Kalexi smiled. "Shared celebration."

Silence settled between them. Eventually, Daren sighed dramatically.

"...You're becoming troublesome."

"I learned from the best."

"Hm." He nodded thoughtfully. "...Fair enough."

The two shared a quiet laugh before finally beginning breakfast.

Outside, the village buzzed with excitement. Inside, only the soft clinking of wooden utensils could be heard.

For a while, neither of them spoke. Then Kalexi noticed something. His father wasn't really eating. He kept tearing tiny pieces from his bread, only to forget about them moments later. His thoughts were somewhere else.

Every now and then, his eyes drifted toward Kalexi, only to quickly look away whenever he noticed he'd been caught.

Kalexi smiled. "...You're nervous."

Daren blinked. "...Am I?"

"You've been folding that same piece of bread for the last minute."

His father looked down. The bread in his hand had somehow become... a bird. He chuckled to himself. "...Seems I have."

Kalexi smiled softly. "It's okay. I'll awaken today."

"I know."

"No..." Kalexi slowly shook his head. "I mean... I'll make today worth everything."

The room became quiet again. Daren looked at him for a long moment. Then, very gently, he reached across the table. His rough finger lightly tapped Kalexi's forehead.

"You think today is important because it'll change your future."

Kalexi nodded. "...Doesn't it?"

"It does." His father's smile remained warm. "But don't make the mistake of believing your worth begins today. You've been enough... for eighteen years, Lexi. And that's more than enough for me."

The words settled deep inside Kalexi's heart. He couldn't find an answer. Instead, he lowered his head, a small smile tugging at his lips.

"...You're going to make me cry before breakfast."

Daren laughed quietly. "That would be unfortunate."

"For who?"

"You."

Kalexi looked up. "Why me?"

"Because you'll walk into the Awakening Ceremony with swollen eyes." A mischievous gold glint appeared in his expression. "And the entire village will think you cried because you were scared."

Kalexi immediately sat upright. "...Absolutely not." He hurriedly rubbed both eyes with exaggerated determination. "There. I'm fixed."

Daren nodded with complete seriousness. "Excellent. That's the face I wanted to see."

Kalexi stopped rubbing, his eyes slowly narrowing.

"..."

"...You planned that."

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"You absolutely did."

"I am but a humble father."

"Humble fathers don't assault their children with frying pans."

"It was tactical parenting."

"..."

"I'm telling everyone."

"I'll deny everything."

Kalexi folded his arms. "They'll believe me."

"They won't."

"They saw you carrying the frying pan."

"..." Daren paused. "...That may complicate my defense."

For a heartbeat, neither spoke. Then, both burst into laughter. The tiny house echoed with it—warm, comfortable, alive.

Outside, the bells of Ashvale suddenly rang. Once. Twice. Three times.

The laughter slowly faded. Father and son looked toward the open window. Neither needed to say it.

Awakening Day had officially begun.

Kalexi stood before the front door. For a long moment, he simply stared at it.

The old wooden frame was scratched from years of use. One of the hinges squeaked every time it opened, no matter how many times his father insisted he'd "fix it tomorrow."

Tomorrow had somehow become years ago.

His hand rested gently against the worn wood. His gaze slowly wandered around the tiny house—every crooked plank, every faded wall, every patch upon the roof. Every winter spent huddled beside the fireplace while rain drummed against the windows. Every meal his father had somehow managed to put on the table despite never having enough. Every sacrifice made without complaint.

A faint smile appeared on Kalexi's face. "This is the last day. After today, I'll change everything."

He tightened his fist. Not for himself, but for the man quietly standing behind him.

"Dad."

Daren looked up. "...Hm?"

Kalexi smiled. "When I become a Vessel, the first thing I'm buying is a new roof."

Daren glanced upward. "...What's wrong with this one?"

"It leaks."

"Only when it rains."

"...That's exactly when roofs aren't supposed to leak."

"It builds character."

Kalexi laughed. "I think we've developed enough character."

"...Maybe," Daren smiled. "But I was thinking we'd fix the window first."

Kalexi blinked. "...The window?"

"It whistles every winter."

"..." Kalexi shook his head. "...You've really been listening to that thing?"

"It keeps me awake."

"Fine. A new roof, a new window, and a proper table."

Daren folded his arms thoughtfully. "...The books under it have been working very hard."

"They deserve retirement."

"...Fair point."

Their eyes met. Neither spoke, and neither needed to. Some promises didn't require witnesses.

Kalexi finally reached for the handle. The old door creaked open. Warm morning sunlight poured inside like liquid gold, washing over the little home. He stepped outside.

The cool morning breeze brushed against his face—fresh, gentle, filled with possibility.

Behind him, Daren remained standing quietly in the doorway, watching.

Kalexi stretched both arms above his head before turning around with a grin. "Let's go, Dad."

"After you..."

Kalexi smiled as he stepped through the threshold. "Today marks our beginning."

The morning breeze carried the words away.

The streets of Ashvale had transformed overnight. What had once been quiet stone roads were now overflowing with life. Children darted between laughing adults with wooden swords clutched tightly in their hands, pretending to battle terrifying Rift Fiends.

Colorful banners fluttered overhead. The aroma of grilled meat, fresh bread, and sweet pastries drifted from roadside stalls. Merchants shouted over one another, each determined to attract the growing crowd.

"Fresh fruit!"

"Genesis charms!"

"Lucky pendants for Awakening Day!"

Everywhere Kalexi looked, people were smiling. For Ashvale, Awakening Day wasn't simply a ceremony. It was hope. Hope that another young Vessel would rise. Hope that another family would see their child step onto the path of greatness. Hope that humanity would one day push just a little farther into the World Scar.

A little girl tugged excitedly on her mother's sleeve. "Mama! Will I awaken today too?"

The woman laughed softly and brushed a strand of hair behind her daughter's ear. "Not yet, sweetheart. You're only six."

The little girl's face puffed into a pout. "...Tomorrow then?"

Kalexi couldn't help but chuckle. Beside him, Daren smiled knowingly.

"You were exactly like that."

"I was?"

"Every morning. *'When do I become a Vessel? When do I become a Vessel? When do I become a Vessel?'*"

Kalexi scratched the back of his head sheepishly. "...Sounds annoying."

"It was."

They both laughed. The laughter blended seamlessly with the joyous noise filling Ashvale.

Neither of them noticed... high above the village, far beyond the drifting clouds... the World Scar

pulsed.

Once.

So faintly that no one saw it.
