The blue screen pulsed once, then unfolded into a fresh block of text hovering steady despite the smoke still curling through the alley behind him.

EMERGENCY MISSION: The Hidden Lot Objective: Attend the underground auction at the Ashford Vault before 2:00 AM. Acquire Lot Number 27.

Reward: Unknown until acquisition is complete. Penalty for failure: Unknown.

Kaelor read it twice, his pulse still racing from the gunfire and the burning wreckage a few streets behind him. “Unknown reward. Unknown penalty. That’s not helpful at all.”

[Some answers can only be earned, not given.]

“That’s not an answer either.”

The screen offered nothing further, only a small countdown ticking in the corner, sixty three minutes remaining. Kaelor wiped blood from his forehead with his sleeve and forced himself to think clearly. An underground auction in the middle of the night was not something he could simply walk into wearing a torn, soot streaked jacket.

Yet the System had never once given him a mission he could refuse, not really, not with his sister’s recovery and his own survival hanging in the balance.

He hailed the first taxi he found and gave the address the System had quietly slipped into his mind, a location that felt half remembered, half implanted. The driver gave him a strange look but said nothing, likely too tired or too used to strange passengers to ask questions.

The Ashford Vault turned out to be a converted bank building on the edge of the financial district, its original marble facade still intact, though the ground floor windows had been blacked out completely.

A single unmarked door around the side let him in after a bouncer scanned a code that appeared automatically on his phone, another quiet gift from the System he had not asked for.

Inside, the old bank had been transformed into something out of a dream. Crystal chandeliers hung from a vaulted ceiling. Velvet chairs filled a wide auction room, occupied by men in tailored suits and women dripping in jewelry that probably cost more than entire neighborhoods. A hush of murmured conversation filled the space, punctuated by the occasional clink of champagne glasses.

Kaelor slid into an empty seat near the back, painfully aware of his damp jacket and disheveled hair among a sea of silk and diamonds. Nobody seemed to notice him yet, which suited him fine.

An auctioneer stepped onto a raised platform at the front, tapping a small gavel against a wooden podium. “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome.

Tonight’s final lots are among the rarest this house has ever offered. Let us proceed to Lot Twenty Six.”

Two attendants wheeled out a glass case containing what looked like an ancient manuscript, and bidding exploded immediately, numbers climbing past two million within seconds. Kaelor watched in stunned silence as wealthy strangers threw around sums that would have solved every problem in his life a day ago, treating millions like pocket change.

Then the attendants returned, wheeling out a small black case toward the center of the platform.

“Lot Twenty Seven,” the auctioneer announced.

“Origin unknown. Provenance unverified. We open the bidding at one hundred thousand.”

Kaelor’s chest tightened. This was it.

A paddle rose near the front. “One hundred thousand.”

Another voice, sharper, cut in from the side. “Two hundred.”

The numbers climbed rapidly, doubling, tripling, as if the mysterious box had triggered some silent competition among the city’s wealthiest collectors. Kaelor’s hands grew clammy. He had exactly one hundred thousand dollars sitting in his account, the reward from Mission 001, and watching it evaporate in seconds against strangers throwing around numbers like breath felt like watching his sister’s safety net dissolve in real time.

“Eight hundred thousand,” a woman near the front called out, barely glancing up from her phone.

Kaelor’s stomach dropped. He had nowhere near that amount. He glanced at the countdown ticking silently in the corner of his vision, forty one minutes remaining, and felt panic clawing up his throat.

“Nine hundred thousand,” another bidder answered.

[Host possesses insufficient funds for direct bid.]

“I know that,” Kaelor muttered under his breath.

[Alternative available: Host may offer future ownership of acquired assets as collateral.]

Kaelor blinked. “You mean the coffee shop land?”

[Correct. Auction house will accept verified collateral against outstanding balance.]

Before he could second guess himself, Kaelor raised his hand. “One million, secured against real estate holdings verified through Halcyon registry.”

The room fell into a brief, startled silence.

The auctioneer glanced toward a side table where two officials typed rapidly, cross checking the claim. After a tense few seconds, one of them nodded.

“Verified,” the auctioneer said, visibly surprised. “One million, from the gentleman in the back.”

A ripple of whispers passed through the crowd, heads turning to study the disheveled young man who had just outbid half the room using nothing but paperwork and audacity. The woman near the front narrowed her eyes at him, clearly displeased, but said nothing further.

“Going once,” the auctioneer called. “Going twice.”

The gavel struck.

“Sold, to Lot Twenty Seven, for one million dollars.”

Kaelor’s legs nearly buckled with relief as an attendant carried the small black case toward him, setting it gently on a side table near his chair. His fingers trembled as he unlatched the lid, half expecting jewels, or bonds, or some hidden fortune worthy of the price he had just paid.

Instead, resting on dark velvet, sat a single old iron key, tarnished with age, its handle engraved with a spiral pattern he recognized instantly.

The exact same symbol that had appeared the moment his System first activated.

His breath caught in his throat. “This is…”

[Origin confirmed. Analysis in progress.]

Before the System could finish its sentence, the chandeliers overhead flickered violently, plunging the room into sudden darkness. A deep mechanical groan echoed through the walls, followed by a cold, automated voice booming from hidden speakers throughout the auction hall.

“Security breach detected. Facility entering full lockdown. All exits sealed.”

Gasps and panicked murmurs erupted across the room as heavy steel shutters slammed down over every window and door in rapid succession, sealing the entire hall like a vault closing on its own treasure. Emergency lights flickered on, casting a dim red glow across hundreds of terrified, wealthy faces.

Kaelor clutched the iron key tightly in his fist, his heart hammering against his ribs as the last shutter slammed shut with a deafening metallic crash, trapping everyone inside.

Kaelor’s heart pounded against his ribs. The words hung in the cold night air between them, quiet yet somehow deafening.“System Holder,” the stranger said again, stepping forward just enough for the streetlight to catch the edge of his face. He was younger than Kaelor expected, maybe thirty, with sharp cheekbones and calm, calculating eyes that seemed to measure every inch of him.“How do you know that term?” Kaelor asked, backing up a step. “Who are you?”The stranger raised both hands slowly, showing he meant no immediate harm. “My name is Orien Kross. And before you ask, no, I’m not your enemy.”“That’s exactly what an enemy would say.”A faint smile crossed Orien’s lips. “Fair point. But I don’t have much time to convince you, so let me just say this plainly. You’re not the only one.”Kaelor’s breath caught. “The only one what?”“The only System Holder in this city.” Orien’s eyes flicked briefly toward the rooftops surrounding them, quick and alert, like a man checking for danger

No payment, no treatment. Those are the rules.”This was the same woman who had sneered at him hours earlier, the same woman who had told him to come back when he had real money, as if desperation was something a person could simply schedule around.“I have the payment,” Kaelor said calmly. The receptionist rolled her eyes. “Sir, I don’t have time for this. Unless you’re walking in here with twelve thousand dollars in cash, there’s nothing I can—”Kaelor set the folder on the counter. Inside sat neat stacks of hundred dollar bills, bound tightly, more money
