Chapter 1: The Poorest Man in the Room

“Look around, Kaelor. Every watch here costs more than your entire life.”

The words hit harder than any punch he had ever taken. Kaelor Voss stood in the middle of the Helios Grand Hotel ballroom, soaked in cold rain that clung to his cheap suit, while five hundred of the city’s wealthiest guests turned to stare at him like he was something scraped off the bottom of a shoe.

Seraphine Vale stood a few feet away, radiant in a white gown that probably cost more than his old apartment. Her new fiancé stood beside her, smirking, his hand resting possessively on her waist. Diamonds sparkled on her wrist. Confidence sparkled in her eyes. Cruelty sparkled in her smile.

“You really thought you belonged here,” she said, loud enough for the entire room to hear. “You thought a nobody like you could ever stand next to someone like me.”

Laughter rippled through the crowd. Champagne glasses clinked. Someone in the back muttered, “Who let the beggar in?”

Kaelor’s jaw tightened. Three years ago, this woman had promised to marry him. Three years ago, she had cried in his arms and told him he was the only person who ever understood her. Now she was making sure the entire city watched him get destroyed.

“Seraphine,” he said quietly. “You don’t have to do this.”

“Do what?” She tilted her head, feigning innocence. “Remind everyone what happens when a poor man dreams too big?”

More laughter.

He should have expected this. She had invited him herself, sent the invitation through an assistant with a short message attached. One last visit, for old times’ sake. He had actually believed there might be something left between them worth saving. He had been wrong. She hadn’t invited him to reconnect. She had invited him to be humiliated in front of everyone who mattered in this city.

“Security,” Seraphine said, waving a manicured hand like she was swatting a fly. “He’s disturbing my engagement.”

Two large men in black suits appeared instantly. One grabbed Kaelor by the collar. The other grabbed his arm and twisted it behind his back.

“Let go of me,” Kaelor said, gritting his teeth against the pain. Nobody in the crowd moved to help him. Nobody even looked uncomfortable. They watched like this was entertainment, like his humiliation was simply another part of the party’s schedule, right after the champagne toast and right before the cake.

The guards dragged him across the marble floor, out through the golden doors, and threw him onto the wet pavement outside. His knee scraped against the concrete. His palm split open on a jagged edge of the curb. Rain poured down on him, soaking through what was left of his dignity.

Behind him, the doors closed. Through the glass, he could see Seraphine laughing with her fiancé, already forgetting he existed.

Kaelor lay there for a moment, breathing hard, blood mixing with rainwater on his hand. The cold bit into his skin. His ribs ached from where the guard had shoved him. And somewhere deep inside his chest, something old and tired cracked just a little further.

Then his phone buzzed. He almost ignored it. He almost let it ring until it stopped, until the battery died, until the world forgot about him completely. But something made him reach into his soaked pocket and pull it out anyway.

His sister’s name flashed on the screen. Mira.

He answered, voice hoarse. “Mira? What’s wrong?”

For a second there was only static and the sound of someone crying in the background. Then a stranger’s voice came through, sharp and urgent.

“Is this Kaelor Voss? Your sister collapsed at school. We’ve got her at Ashgate Memorial. She needs immediate treatment, but the hospital is asking for payment before they can proceed. Sir, are you there?”

The rain suddenly felt colder. “How much?”

“Twelve thousand dollars. That’s just for the initial procedures.”

Kaelor’s stomach dropped straight through the pavement beneath him. Twelve thousand dollars. He barely had enough to cover next month’s rent. He pulled up his banking app with shaking, bloodied fingers, praying for a miracle he already knew wouldn’t come.

Balance: $18.63.

Eighteen dollars and sixty three cents. That was his entire net worth. That was everything he had left after years of working two jobs, after years of chasing a life that Seraphine had convinced him he deserved, after years of sacrificing everything just to survive in a city built for people who had never known what hunger felt like.

“Sir? Are you still there? We need an answer.”

“I’m coming,” Kaelor said, though he had no idea how he would actually pay for anything. “Please, just keep her stable. I’m on my way.”

He hung up and stumbled to his feet, ignoring the pain shooting through his knee. He started walking, then running, cutting through alleys and side streets, desperate to reach the hospital faster than his broken body could carry him. His lungs burned. His vision blurred from rain and exhaustion and something that felt dangerously close to despair.

By the time he reached the old stone bridge near the river, his legs finally gave out.

He gripped the railing, chest heaving, staring down at the dark water rushing below. Twelve thousand dollars. Eighteen dollars. A dying sister. A humiliated life. A world that had given him nothing but rejection since the day he was born poor.

For the first time in years, Kaelor Voss let himself imagine what it would feel like to simply stop fighting.

He climbed onto the ledge. The rain poured harder, blurring the city lights into smears of gold and white. Somewhere behind him, a car horn blared. Somewhere below, the river churned, dark and endless, waiting.

He closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry, Mira,” he whispered.

He leaned forward.

And then, a voice exploded inside his skull, ancient and mechanical, shaking him to his core.

“Infinite Wealth System activated.”
