Kaelor’s heart pounded against his ribs. The words hung in the cold night air between them, quiet yet somehow deafening.

“System Holder,” the stranger said again, stepping forward just enough for the streetlight to catch the edge of his face. He was younger than Kaelor expected, maybe thirty, with sharp cheekbones and calm, calculating eyes that seemed to measure every inch of him.

“How do you know that term?” Kaelor asked, backing up a step. “Who are you?”

The stranger raised both hands slowly, showing he meant no immediate harm. “My name is Orien Kross. And before you ask, no, I’m not your enemy.”

“That’s exactly what an enemy would say.”

A faint smile crossed Orien’s lips. “Fair point. But I don’t have much time to convince you, so let me just say this plainly. You’re not the only one.”

Kaelor’s breath caught. “The only one what?”

“The only System Holder in this city.” Orien’s eyes flicked briefly toward the rooftops surrounding them, quick and alert, like a man checking for danger out of pure habit. “There are others. Some got their System years ago. Some just woke up tonight, same as you.”

“That’s impossible. I only just..”

“Activated it a few hours ago. I know.” Orien’s expression tightened. “I felt it happen. We all did.”

Kaelor’s mind spun, trying to process everything at once. His sister’s hospital bill. The coffee shop. The countdown ticking silently in the corner of his vision. And now this stranger, standing calmly in an empty parking lot, speaking as if entire hidden worlds existed beneath the surface of the one Kaelor thought he understood.

“Why are you telling me this?” Kaelor asked.

Orien’s jaw tightened. “Because you need to know the truth before it’s too late. The System isn’t what you think it is.”

“What do you mean?”

Orien opened his mouth to answer.

A red dot appeared on his chest. Kaelor barely had time to register it before Orien’s eyes widened and he shoved Kaelor hard, sending him sprawling behind a parked car just as the first shot cracked through the night air. The bullet tore through the space where Kaelor had been standing only a heartbeat earlier.

“Get down!” Orien shouted.

Chaos erupted instantly. A second shot rang out, then a third, sparks flying off metal as bullets tore into the parked cars around them. Kaelor pressed himself flat against the cold, wet pavement, covering his head as glass shattered somewhere above him.

“Who’s shooting at us?” Kaelor yelled over the noise.

“Doesn’t matter right now!” Orien shouted back; “just stay down!”

A fourth shot hit something more volatile, and one of the parked cars erupted into a fireball, the explosion throwing heat and debris across the lot. Kaelor felt the shockwave slam into his back, throwing him forward onto his hands. His ears rang violently, the world reduced to muffled static and the frantic pounding of his own heartbeat.

Through the smoke and chaos, he caught a glimpse of Orien moving with unnatural speed, weaving between the gunfire like the bullets themselves were hesitant to touch him. Another explosion rocked a second vehicle, flames licking up into the night sky, casting flickering orange light across the entire parking lot.

“Orien!” Kaelor shouted, coughing through the smoke. “What is happening?”

Orien appeared beside him for one brief second, grabbing his collar and hauling him upright, pulling him behind a concrete pillar just as another round of gunfire chewed through the space they had just occupied.

“Listen to me,” Orien said, his voice tight and urgent, blood trickling from a cut above his eyebrow. “You need to survive tonight. That’s all that matters right now.”

“Tell me what’s going on!”

Orien’s eyes locked onto his, and for a brief moment, something like genuine sorrow flickered across his face.

“Don’t trust your System.”

Before Kaelor could respond, before he could even process the weight of those four words, Orien shoved him hard to the ground and sprinted directly into the chaos, disappearing into the smoke and flashing gunfire like he had simply dissolved into the night itself.

“Wait!” Kaelor screamed, scrambling to his feet.

Another explosion tore through a nearby vehicle, the blast throwing him backward into a metal dumpster. Pain shot through his shoulder as he hit the ground hard, ears ringing, vision swimming.

When he managed to look up again through the smoke and falling ash, Orien was gone. Completely gone, as if he had never been standing there at all.

Sirens wailed faintly in the distance, growing louder with every passing second. Kaelor forced himself upright, stumbling away from the burning wreckage, his lungs burning from smoke, his hands shaking uncontrollably.

The parking lot behind him was a scene of complete devastation, three cars engulfed in flame, shattered glass scattered across the pavement like fallen stars, thick black smoke curling upward into the night sky.

He staggered through a side alley, putting distance between himself and the destruction, his mind replaying Orien’s final words over and over.

Don’t trust your System.

What did that even mean? The System had saved his sister’s life tonight. It had pulled him back from the edge of a bridge, back from the darkest moment of his entire existence. How could something that gave him everything also be something he could not trust?

Kaelor pressed his back against a brick wall, chest heaving, trying to steady his breathing as sirens grew louder behind him. Blood trickled from a shallow cut on his forehead, mixing with sweat and the last remnants of rain. His hands would not stop shaking.

Who had just tried to kill him? Why did a man who called himself another System Holder risk his own life to warn him, only to vanish into gunfire seconds later? And how many other people out there, hidden among the ordinary crowds of this city, were carrying secrets just as dangerous as his own?

He had no answers. Only questions stacking on top of questions, each one heavier than the last.

A soft chime echoed inside his skull, cutting through the chaos of his thoughts. The familiar blue glow shimmered to life in front of his eyes, steady and calm despite the destruction surrounding him.

[Threat detected.] [Host survival status:

Confirmed.] [Emergency Mission Activated.]

Kaelor stared at the words, his heart still hammering against his ribs, smoke curling past him into the night sky, sirens closing in from every direction.

Then the side doors burst open.Six figures dressed in black tactical gear stormed into the hall, faces hidden behind smooth featureless masks, moving with the precision of trained soldiers rather than common criminals. No payment, no treatment. Those are the rules.”This was the same woman who had sneered at him hours earlier, the same woman who had told him to come back when he had real money, as if desperation was something a person could simply schedule around.“I have the payment,” Kaelor said calmly. The receptionist rolled her eyes. “Sir, I don’t have time for this. Unless you’re walking in here with twelve thousand dollars in cash, there’s nothing I can—”Kaelor set the folder on the counter. Inside sat neat stacks of hundred dollar bills, bound tightly, more money
