Her voice split into two tones, hers, soft and human, and the Gardener’s, deep and cruel. “Fool! You think you cut me? You cut her!”

Kai’s chest shattered. His hands trembled on the sword. “Amara, hold on!” he shouted, his throat raw.

The soldier staggered behind him, half-blinded by the light. “Damn it, Crest, what did you do?!”

The heart split open, roots peeling away like flesh. Inside, faces writhed, men, women, children, all the lives stolen by the Gardener.

Their mouths moved in silent agony, their eyes glowing green, and at the very center,

Amara. Her body glowed faint green, her hair drifting as if underwater. Her eyes were empty, no warmth, no recognition. When she spoke, her voice came layered: Amara’s voice soft, but behind it a deeper, harsher tone. “You shouldn’t have come, Kai.”The soldier muttered, his rifle shaking in his hands. “Oh, hell. Tell me that’s not her.”Kai whispered, “It’s her.” His throat felt like it was closing. Amara tilted her head, the movement unnatural, like a puppet pulled by strings. The Gardener’s voice spoke through her mouth: “She belongs to me now. Her roots dig deep. Her will bends. She is the vessel, Kai Crest.
