Talia didn't let go. Bran's arm shook in her grip, fingers still open toward the oilcloth, and she held on with her whole weight, jaw clenched, until he said her name.

"Talia. I can stop."

"Can you?"

"Watch."

He closed his fist. It took longer than it should have. Then he let his hand fall into his lap, and a long breath went out of him, and for a moment he looked about twelve years old.

"Give it to me," he said.

Cole didn't move. "No."

"Cole." Bran kept his voice level, and it cost him. "You'v

Talia didn't let go. Bran's arm shook in her grip, fingers still open toward the oilcloth, and she held on with her whole weight, jaw clenched, until he said her name."Talia. I can stop.""Can you?""Watch."He closed his fist. It took longer than it should have. Then he let his hand fall into his lap, and a long breath went out of him, and for a moment he looked about twelve years old."Give it to me," he said.Cole didn't move. "No.""Cole." Bran kept his voice level, and it cost him. "You've already broken the rule. It's here. So let's learn something from it. If I hold it, awake, with all of you watching, I'll know whether the pull is something I can answer or something that answers for me. I'd rather find out at this fire than at the stone.""You'd be handing it exactly what it wants," Cole said."Maybe. Or I'd be learning what it wants." He looked at Mirelle. "Tell him I'm not being reckless."Mirelle took a long time. "One condition. Talia holds the tether. Cole asks the quest

  • What Cole Carried

Rathorn let the rider go, then laid both palms on the war room table and looked at the cord still stretched across Mirelle's map."Say it," he told Cole."Lock him in." Cole didn't soften it. "Bars, a guard at the door, whatever it takes until we know what this is.""And when it walks me out through the bars?" Bran kept his voice level. "The guard at the gate opened for me because I asked politely. Next time there won't be anyone awake to ask.""You'd be walking toward the thing that's pulling you.""I'd be walking with you." His hands were flat on the table again, pressing down. "That's the only part I get to choose. I'd rather go toward it with all of you than away from it alone."Silence. Mirelle's pen had stopped. Talia was looking at the floor, which meant she agreed and hated it.Rathorn took his time. When he finally spoke, he spoke to Bran. "Then you go, and you go on terms. Tethered at night. Cole, Talia and Mirelle with you. Wardiron stays in the strongroom.""Agreed.""If a

  • What Talia Saw

Talia told it flat, the way a soldier makes a report. She hadn't slept since the gate, and it showed in how still she held herself."Folded blanket. Laced boots. He walked the whole way without looking at anything." She turned her cup a quarter turn on the table. "The guard asked if he wanted the gate open and he said yes, very politely. He said he'd be back by dawn."Bran sat across from her in the archive room with his hands under the table. Mirelle stood at the end with her notebook, not writing yet."And then?""And then he looked at me." Talia stopped. Started again. "It was your face. But it was calm. You're never calm, Bran. You chew your thumb when you're thinking. This face had nothing in it to chew."He almost laughed. It died halfway out. "Did I hurt anyone?""No.""Would I have?"She held his eyes. She had never lied to him, and she didn't now. "I don't know."He nodded slowly. He'd expected to want a different answer. Oddly, the honest one steadied him more.Talia reached

  • The Fourth Night

Emrys read the sentence three times. Bran watched him do it, watched his eyes go back to the top of Mirelle's page and start over, as if the words might rearrange themselves if he were patient enough."And then it will be finished," Emrys said at last."Does it mean something to you?" Mirelle asked. He set his staff against the table with great care, the way a man sets down something he's afraid to drop. "My grandmother's final method had a name in her notes. The woman told you what it was.""Completion," Bran said."Yes." Emrys didn't look up. "Finished is not completion. They're different words. It may mean nothing.""You don't look like it means nothing.""No." A muscle moved in Emrys's jaw. "I don't."Bran pushed back from the table. The chair legs scraped loud in the quiet room. "Everyone keeps handing me an ending. The woman. The fragment. Now a word in your grandmother's notes.""I'm not handing you anything." Emrys finally met his eyes. "I'm telling you what I recognize, which

  • The Shape of Whole

Bran told them his terms before he asked the fragment anything."I'm doing this here, in daylight, with both of you watching." The archive room was cold and smelled of old paper. Mirelle sat across from him with her notebook open, and Talia stood by the shelves with her arms folded. "If I say stop, we stop. If I go quiet and don't come back, you don't push me deeper. You pull me out.""How?" Mirelle asked."Say my name. Loudly. Ask me what I ate for breakfast. Something ordinary." He'd worked it out on the walk over, turning it in his head like a tool he didn't trust yet. "And if that doesn't work, Mirelle stops it however she has to.""I'd prefer to wait," Mirelle said. "Another week of data, at least, before you reach for it on purpose.""I don't think I have a week of not knowing." He kept his voice even. "It's asking things of me whether I ask it anything or not. I'd rather be the one asking."She studied him a moment, then nodded once. Talia didn't say anything, which from her wa

  • What It Wants

Bran woke before dawn with the fragment's words already running through his head, and lay there until the ceiling stopped being dark and started being gray. Sleep wasn't coming back. He dressed without lighting the lamp, boots in hand so the floorboards wouldn't carry, and went to the archive room.Mirelle was there, as he'd known she would be. A pot of tea sat beside her notes, steeped so long it had to be bitter."You didn't sleep either," she said, without looking up."It told me something else, before I drifted off." He sat across from her. "That it was remembering how to want. I think it means it wants to stay."Her pen stopped. "Think, or know?""Think. It didn't say it in words." He turned his empty cup a slow half circle on the table. "Does that change what we're dealing with?""It might. A remnant that only echoes is one problem. A remnant with a developing will is another." She finally looked at him. "I'd be careful with the word 'person' until we have reason for it, though.
