Chapter 1
The Awakening
The bell rang at exactly noon.
Across the enormous Awakening Hall, thousands of students fell silent. Kael Rowan stood among them, his hands buried deep inside the pockets of his black uniform jacket. Above the circular stage, a massive crystal suspended from the ceiling began to glow. Blue. Then silver. Then a blinding white. A murmur swept through the crowd. “It’s starting.” “My heart is going to explode.” “Do you think I’ll get a combat class?” “My brother got a Legendary System last year.” “Lucky bastard.” Kael heard every word. He tried not to let any of it reach him. Today was supposed to be the most important day of his life. Every eighteen-year-old in Elarion eventually stood beneath the Awakening Crystal. The System would then appear, determine their initial potential, and reveal the path they would follow. Some received swords. Some received magic. Some awakened abilities nobody had ever seen before. And once the System appeared, their lives changed forever. Kael had spent the past three years imagining this moment. He had imagined seeing a glowing blue screen appear in front of his eyes. He had imagined reading his first skill. He had imagined his parents' faces when his System revealed itself. Most of all, he had imagined proving everyone wrong. A sharp voice interrupted his thoughts. “Candidates, prepare yourselves.” The head instructor stepped onto the platform. Professor Elias Varen was dressed in the dark robes of the Royal Awakening Academy. Silver lines ran along the edges of his sleeves, marking him as a high-ranking System researcher. He looked across the students. “Once your name is called, step onto the platform. Stand beneath the crystal and remain still. Do not attempt to interfere with the Awakening process.” The crystal hummed above them. “Your System will determine your initial attributes, class, skills, and potential.” The students listened nervously. “Remember,” Professor Varen continued, “your first result is not necessarily your final destiny. A weak System can become powerful through effort. A powerful System can be wasted through arrogance.” Kael's fingers tightened inside his pockets. That sentence stayed with him. A weak System could become powerful. He didn't need the strongest System. He just needed one chance. The names began. “Lena Morin.” A girl near the front gasped. She hurried onto the platform. The crystal descended slightly. Light wrapped around her body. A translucent blue window appeared in front of her. [Awakening successful.] [System identified: Arcane Flame.] The hall erupted. “Rare!” “That's an elemental System!” Lena covered her mouth. Her eyes filled with tears. Her parents, watching from the upper section, jumped to their feet. Kael smiled faintly. Good for her. Then another name. “Darius Black.” The atmosphere changed. Darius stepped forward with the confidence of someone who already knew the result. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and had been one of the strongest students in their training classes. The crystal flashed red. A heavy pressure slammed across the hall. Several students staggered. [Awakening successful.] [System identified: Berserker.] [Class: Berserker.] [Unique Trait detected: Blood Rage.] The hall exploded. Darius grinned. Someone behind Kael whispered, “He's going to be a monster.” Kael watched the red light fade from Darius's body. For a moment, their eyes met. Darius smirked. Kael looked away. Their competition had started long before today. But now there was a difference between them. Darius had a System. Kael didn't know what he would receive. He told himself not to worry. He would have his turn. Eventually. Names continued. One after another, Systems appeared. A healer. A swordsman. A beast tamer. A lightning mage. A dimensional storage System. A rare crafting System. Every few minutes, another person left the platform with a new future. Kael watched carefully. The screens appeared instantly. Some students screamed with excitement. Others cried when they received ordinary Systems. But nobody left the platform with nothing. Nobody. Kael glanced toward the large clock hanging above the hall. Only twelve students remained. His name was approaching. His heartbeat became louder. Thump. Thump. Thump. He swallowed. “Kael Rowan.” Everything inside him went still. For a second, the enormous hall seemed strangely quiet. Then came the whispers. “That's him.” “The guy from Class Seven?” “Yeah.” “I heard he hasn't shown any special abilities.” “Maybe his System will compensate.” Kael stepped forward. His shoes struck the polished floor. One step. Then another. He climbed the stairs to the platform. The Awakening Crystal hung above him. Up close, it was enormous. Light moved inside its transparent surface like clouds trapped beneath glass. Kael stopped beneath it. Professor Varen looked at him. “Relax.” Kael nodded. “Close your eyes.” He did. “Clear your mind.” Kael inhaled slowly. For three years, he had imagined this. His palms became damp. Please. Just give me something. The crystal hummed. A beam of light dropped over him. Warmth spread across his skin. Then— Nothing. Kael waited. One second. Two. Five. The warmth disappeared. He opened his eyes. The crystal was still glowing. But there was no screen. No message. No System. The hall remained silent. Kael stared upward. Maybe it was delayed. He waited another few seconds. Nothing. Professor Varen frowned. He raised one hand toward the crystal. “Continue the scan.” The crystal pulsed. A wave of light passed through Kael. Still nothing. A murmur spread through the hall. “What happened?” “Did it fail?” “It can't fail.” Professor Varen's expression hardened. “Again.” The crystal flashed. Kael felt a strange pressure inside his chest. For one brief moment, he thought he saw something. A tiny white line. A notification. His heart jumped. But it vanished before he could read it. Then silence returned. Professor Varen stepped closer. “Kael.” “Yes?” “Can you see a System interface?” Kael's throat tightened. “No.” “Any status window?” “No.” “Skills?” Kael shook his head. “No.” The professor stared at him. “Quests?” “No.” A student laughed. It was quiet at first. Then another joined. Kael looked toward the crowd. Darius wasn't laughing. He was staring. Confused. Professor Varen turned toward the crystal. “This is unusual.” “What's unusual?” someone called. The professor didn't answer. He placed his hand against the crystal. The crystal responded with a faint vibration. Then a message appeared above the platform. Not in front of Kael. In front of everyone. [Awakening Scan Complete.] The hall went silent. Kael's breath caught. Finally. His System had appeared. But the next line made the room colder. [System Status: Not Detected.] Nobody spoke. Kael blinked. “What?” The message remained. [System Status: Not Detected.] Professor Varen's face changed. For the first time that day, the calm researcher looked genuinely unsettled. He scanned Kael again. Nothing. Again. Nothing. “Impossible,” someone whispered. Another student laughed nervously. “Maybe the crystal is broken.” Professor Varen ignored them. “Everyone remain where you are.” Kael stared at the floating message. Not detected. That wasn't a System. That was an absence. His chest tightened. “Professor…” Varen looked at him. “Try opening your interface.” Kael raised his hand. “Status.” Nothing. “System.” Nothing. “Inventory.” Nothing. The students began whispering louder. “He doesn't have one.” “No way.” “Is that even possible?” “Everyone awakens.” “Maybe he's defective.” The word hit harder than Kael expected. Defective. He looked toward the upper section. His mother had risen from her seat. She wasn't smiling anymore. His father stood beside her, completely still. Kael wanted to look away. He couldn't. His mother's lips moved. He couldn't hear her from this distance. But he understood. Kael. Her face was frightened. His father looked toward Professor Varen as if demanding an explanation. Kael turned back to the crystal. His jaw tightened. “Scan me again.” Professor Varen hesitated. “We already—” “Again.” The professor studied him. Then he nodded. The crystal brightened. White light poured over Kael. It burned against his skin. For a moment, everything disappeared. The voices. The hall. The people. There was only darkness. Then something whispered inside it. Not a System notification. Not a human voice. Something older. Something distant. [Compatibility check initiated.] Kael's eyes widened. What? Another line appeared. [System synchronization...] The words flickered. Then vanished. The darkness shattered. Kael stumbled backward. The hall returned. Professor Varen caught his shoulder. “What did you see?” Kael looked at him. His mouth opened. Nothing came out. The professor's expression sharpened. “Kael. What did you see?” Kael looked around the hall. Thousands of eyes were fixed on him. He could feel their judgment. Their curiosity. Their disbelief. He swallowed. “I…” His voice cracked. “I don't know.” The crystal suddenly went dark. A final message appeared above the platform. [Awakening Result: Systemless.] Silence. Then someone laughed. Not nervously this time. Loudly. Another person joined. Soon, whispers became cruel jokes. “The only Systemless.” “What a joke.” “How can someone be Systemless?” “He's finished.” Kael stood beneath the dead crystal. His hands slowly curled into fists. He could hear every laugh. Every whisper. Every word. He wanted to disappear. Instead, he lifted his head. He looked at the glowing status windows surrounding the other students. Then at his empty space. Nothing. No System. No skills. No advantages. For the first time in his life, Kael understood exactly what it meant to stand alone. Professor Varen looked at him with an expression Kael couldn't read. Then he announced the words that would follow Kael for the rest of his life. “Kael Rowan…” The hall fell silent again. “…has awakened without a System.” Kael closed his eyes. For three years, he had believed the Awakening would determine his future. Now he had no future handed to him at all. So he made himself a promise. If the world refused to give him a path— he would build one himself.Expand

The Only One Without a System Not Luck

The Only One Without a System The rematch
Kael woke before dawn. For a few seconds, he lay still, staring into the darkness of his room. His body remembered yesterday. His ribs were sore. His shoulder throbbed whenever he moved it, and there was a tender spot across his chest where Marek's final punch had sent him crashing onto the mat.He sat up anyway. No complaints. No excuses. He reached for his notebook.Marek's name was still on the last page.Strength-type System.Normal attack: Right-handed power punch.Preparation: Right foot turns outward.Weakness: Left side opens during power attacks. Then beneath it:System Skill: Unknown.Kael stared at those words. That was where he had failed. He had spent days learning Marek's normal movements, but he had only seen the System skill once. One time was not enough. He needed to understand it.Kael stood.“Again.”By sunrise, he was running. The streets around the training facility were almost empty.Kael's breathing became heavier as he pushed himself through another lap.His le

The next morning, Kael woke before his alarm. For several seconds, he stared at the ceiling. His entire body hurt. His ribs ached whenever he breathed too deeply. His left shoulder felt stiff, and there was a dull throb behind his right eye where Darius's fist had caught him yesterday.Kael slowly sat up.“Damn.”He pressed a hand against his ribs.Pain answered immediately. It would have been easy to stay in bed.Nobody would blame him. He had spent weeks training, only to discover that the distance between him and a real System user was far larger than he had imagined.Darius hadn't even needed his strongest abilities.Kael had barely survived a few minutes. But instead of discouraging him, the memory made something inside him restless. He reached for the notebook beside his bed.The last page contained yesterday's observations.Darius Black.Strength Gap: Extreme. Objective: Close the gap.Kael stared at the words. Then he turned the page.Underneath, he wrote:What did I do wrong?
