The heir to the Duvan family leaned back in his seat, his voice dripping with arrogance as he snorted,

“When the cat’s away, the mice will play. Who are Rift and Sable compared to the might of the Duvan family? They’re nothing but insects waiting to be crushed.”

The words came out casually, yet every syllable carried the weight of absolute confidence. Kenton didn’t just believe in his superiority—he embodied it.

Elias and Aiden exchanged glances. For a brief moment, they hesitated, but when they truly thought about it, Kenton wasn’t wrong. The Duvans were not just another wealthy family. They were one of the most powerful bloodlines in Shadowmoor. Business, politics, underworld—every corner of society had the Duvan influence lurking behind it. If they wanted to erase someone, even formidable names like Jaden Rift and Morix Sable, it wasn’t unthinkable.

A slow smirk stretched across Elias’s face. He picked up his glass, the expensive liquor swirling like liquid fire inside. “Then the Verricks should thank you, Mr. Kenton,” he said smoothly, though there was a hidden edge to his tone.

The three men clinked glasses, crystal striking crystal with a sharp chime. Elias and Aiden threw their drinks back in one gulp, their throats burning as the liquor went down. Kenton, however, only took the faintest sip before setting his glass back onto the table with deliberate care. His disdain for indulgence was clear.

His sharp eyes flicked toward the man standing silently behind him. “Brandon. Get everything prepared. You’re coming with me tomorrow to Ironvale City. We’re going to put an end to those two clowns.”

The man in black didn’t flinch. His tall frame loomed like a shadow, his black overcoat making him look more like an executioner than a bodyguard. His face was expressionless, carved out of stone. “Yes, sir,” he said in a deep voice, the kind that carried finality.

The Verrick brothers suppressed a shiver. They had heard of Brandon before—Kenton’s personal enforcer, rumored to have cleaned up more than one bloody mess for the Duvans. If Brandon was going, then Rift and Sable’s days might truly be numbered.

Ironvale City – Riverside Garden.

At the break of dawn, the first golden rays pierced through the curtains of a villa’s bedroom. Jaden’s eyes opened instantly, alert as always. Years of surviving in the military camps had conditioned him to wake at the slightest shift in light or sound.

On his left, Mia was fast asleep, clutching her little toy bear as though it were her shield against the world. She had rolled onto her side in the night, her soft breathing steady and innocent. The sight of her always softened the steel in Jaden’s heart.

On his right, however, lay the woman who made his chest tighten in ways he refused to admit out loud. Selena.

She had gone to sleep determined to keep her distance, her daughter as the “line” between them. But sometime during the night, she had drifted across that imaginary border. Now she was curled up against him, her body pressed close, her arms looped loosely around his neck. Her head rested on his shoulder as though it belonged there, her breathing warm against his skin.

Jaden’s lips curved faintly. He had lost count of how many times this had happened. No matter how many rules she set before bed, by the time morning came, she always ended up in his arms. She never admitted it, but her unconscious self betrayed her every night.

For her sake, he played dumb. He always pretended to wake up later, letting her pull away first so she could save face.

But this morning was different. As he studied her sleeping face, his gaze lingered on her delicate features—her long lashes resting against her cheeks, her soft pink lips slightly parted. His heartbeat quickened, the silence in the room amplifying the sound of it in his chest.

A reckless urge surged through him. He wanted to kiss her. Just once. To close the distance and taste the sweetness that tempted him every night.

His face inched closer, his breath mingling with hers.

Then he froze.

Selena’s eyelashes fluttered. A faint quiver, but enough to tell him she was waking.

She’s waking up.

A simpering smile stretched across Elias’s face as he bowed his head low. “Thank you, Mr. Ortega. The Verrick family will never forget your generosity.”Lazarus Ortega didn’t answer right away. Instead, he lazily crooked a finger, and one of his suited men stepped forward immediately, carrying a sleek leather folder. With practiced precision, the man laid the contract open on the glass table before Elias.“Sign,” Lazarus said simply. The word was soft, almost casual, but it left no room for negotiation. Elias’s throat tightened as he took the pen, his hand trembling only slightly before he forced it steady. With a flourish, he scrawled his name across the bottom of the page. The moment the ink dried, the deed was done—the Verrick family was no longer free. They had tied their survival to the Ortega family, shackled by their own desperation.Lazarus snapped his fingers, and another man stepped forward with a chilled bottle of champagne. The cork popped, the golden liquid poured, and La

Xander’s expression darkened, his sharp eyes narrowing as he studied his son. “What do you have in mind, Elias? Speak plainly.”Elias leaned forward, voice low but filled with ambition. “Father, do you know of the Ortega family… one of the Southern Four?”The name alone carried weight. Xander’s brows shot up, and for a moment, even his breathing hitched. “Of course I know them. The Ortega family is a giant compared to the Duvans. They’re a second-tier power under the Four, but even so, the Duvans are practically insects next to them.”A sly grin spread across Elias’s face. “Exactly. You remember the last king of the Ironvale underworld, the man they called the Black Monarch?”Xander’s face stiffened at the mention. “Him? That shadow bastard who ruled Ironvale’s underground for a decade before Sable cut him down?”“That’s the one,” Elias confirmed, his eyes gleaming with calculation. “He was Ortega blood. When Sable wiped him out and swallowed his empire, he put a ban on gray businesse

“Crack down on the Verricks,” Jaden ordered coldly. His voice was calm, but the menace in it was unmistakable. “Maybe if they suffer enough losses, they’ll finally get the hint and learn their lesson.”“Yes, sir!” Kaelus and Morix replied in unison. That very same day, Kenton Duvan’s bloodied body was delivered back to his clan in Shadowmoor. The young heir’s corpse, his eyes still wide open in disbelief, sent shockwaves through the city. Within hours, the news of his demise spread like wildfire. But the real storm erupted elsewhere. At the Verrick family villa, an emergency meeting was underway. The long conference table was crowded with every major member of the Verrick bloodline. Faces were pale, voices were sharp, and the atmosphere was suffocating. In the hours following Kenton’s death, the Verrick family’s empire had begun to crumble. Putting on a brave front even as terror and impotent fury churned in his chest, Kenton raised his voice, his words cracking with desperation.“I’m Kenton Duvan, the heir to the Duvan family! Who dares to touch me!”His ten bodyguards instantly closed ranks, forming a wall of flesh and steel around him. Their stance was rigid, their blades drawn, their eyes filled with grim determination. They knew the odds, but none dared to retreat. To fail the young master meant a fate worse than death at the hands of their own clan.Kenton straightened his spine, hiding behind their formation. His voice rose again, though it quivered at the edges.“Kill them! Kill them all! I want his head on the floor!”The command barely left his lips before Kaelus and Morix moved. The two men leaped forward with the ferocity of predators unleashed, their expressions twisted with rage. They fell upon the bodyguards like wolves tearing into prey.Steel clashed against steel. Screams tore through the restaurant. Th

They were Jaden and Kaelus. For Morix and the others, it was as if the heavens themselves had opened. Their broken bodies trembled, but their voices rose together, hoarse yet filled with hope.“Sir!”The cry echoed through the ruined restaurant, like men who had just glimpsed salvation at the edge of despair.Kenton froze in his chair, his cigarette slipping from his fingers. For the first time that night, his composure cracked. His lips trembled as he stared at the man striding into the room like a shadow of death.“W–why are you here…? Shark…”Jaden’s voice was colder than steel. “He’s dead. And you will be next.”The words landed like a hammer.Kenton’s chest rose and fell rapidly before a sudden burst of laughter tore from his throat. His laughter was wild, manic, but underneath it was fear gnawing at his insides.“Such arrogance!” he barked, his grin twisting into a snarl. “Let’s see if you have the skills to match it! Brandon—kill him!”The order snapped through the air like a w

  • Chapter 403

Kenton lounged lazily in a chair at the center of the wreckage, as if the blood and broken bodies around him were nothing more than stage props. Smoke curled elegantly from the cigarette between his fingers, twisting in the dim light. Behind him, ten bodyguards stood in perfect formation, stone-faced and silent, their eyes fixed ahead like statues. He exhaled a slow stream of smoke and glanced at Morix, whose battered body was still somehow upright despite the blood that dripped steadily from his wounds. Kenton’s lips curled into a smirk, a picture of cruel amusement.“I thought the man who killed my brother and brought down Black Monarch would be more… impressive.” His tone was mocking, dismissive. “But looking at you now? What a disappointment.”Morix swayed on his feet, his body torn to shreds, but his spirit had not cracked. His eyes blazed with defiance. He spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor with a wet splatter and snarled through gritted teeth.“You clowns won’t be celebrat
