Chapter 184: Broadcast room
Asher shoved Director Miller through the reinforced double doors of the central communications suite. The room was packed with humming steel servers, flashing blue light panels, and a long glass desk holding the main regional transmitter. A young Syndicate operator in a gray uniform spun around in his rolling chair. He dropped his coffee mug to the floor with a loud shatter. “Get away from that console!” Camila barked. She raised her rifle and aimed it directly at the technician’s forehead. The operator threw both hands into the air. He stumbled backward until his spine hit the rack of flashing power units. “Do not shoot! I just run the signal boards!” “Then you are going to run a broad signal for us right now,” Kaelen said. He walked into the room with Michael tucked safely behind his left side. “Miller, sit in that steel chair by the window,” Asher ordered. He shoved the Director down onto the hard seat. “Keep your hands flat on your knees.” Miller scoffed. He leaned his
Chapter 183: Director's office
Asher sprinted down the final stretch of tiled hallway. His boots made sharp slapping sounds against the floor. Camila ran shoulder to shoulder with him. Her rifle was locked against her chest. Kaelen held Michael close behind them. “On my count!” Asher barked. He raised his heavy revolver. “Three, two, one!” Asher threw his entire weight into the double wooden doors. He drove his shoulder straight into the center lock. The heavy frame shattered with a deafening crack. It splintered into flying wood chips as the doors burst inward. Inside the vast, dimly lit office, Director Miller spun away from a glass wall map. His hand dropped toward the open holster on his hip. “Do not touch that sidearm, Miller!” Camila roared. She raised her rifle and froze him in place. Miller stopped cold. His fingers hovered an inch above his gun grip. He slowly raised his hands. A tight, cold smile crept across his pale face as he looked at the four intruding figures. “So, you actually survive
Chapter 182: Utility shaft
Camila squeezed through the square iron hatch first. She rested her boot on the narrow metal rung of the vertical ladder. The air inside the wall space smelled of grease, rust, and damp concrete. Deep below, the low hum of the compound generator vibrated straight up the metal frame. “Watch your head on the lower junction box,” Camila whispered. She reached down to steady herself as she looked up into the darkness. “The shaft goes up three levels.” “Kaelen, bring Michael in next,” Asher said. He stayed near the room entrance with his revolver raised toward the closed armory door. Kaelen lifted Michael by his waist. He guided the boy’s boots onto the bottom rung. “Hold the iron bars with both hands, kid. Do not look down.” “I have a good grip,” Michael said. His small fingers wrapped around the cold iron. “It feels just like the old water tower.” “Keep moving up,” Kaelen said. He climbed in right behind him to block any fall. “I am right under you.” Asher slipped into the
Chapter 181: Inside the gate
The heavy transport truck ground to a screeching halt in the middle of the compound. Its metal bumper was embedded deep in the twisted wire fence. Smoke poured from under the crumpled hood as the engine gave one final loud shudder and died. “Out of the truck, right now!” Asher yelled. He kicked his dented door open and vaulted onto the cold asphalt. “Kaelen, grab Michael!” Camila shouted. She dropped out of the passenger side with her rifle held tight against her shoulder. “We have guards moving on the right balcony!” Kaelen scooped Michael up from the footwell. He threw his coat over the boy’s head as bullets began to bite into the truck’s rear tailgate with sharp metal clinks. “Where are we breaking for?” Kaelen panted. He scrambled out into the open yard. “The lower armory door!” Asher shouted back. He pointed toward a thick steel portal beneath the main concrete overhang. “Move, move!” Three Syndicate soldiers burst out of a side barracks. They raised their sidearms as
Chapter 180: The run
Asher slammed the heavy gear shift forward. The stolen transport rocketed past a rusted road marker reading five miles to the central depot. The big engine roared. It shook the dented metal frame as it tore down the wide dirt highway toward the southern basin. In the passenger seat, Camila wedged the newly found ammunition crate between her knees. She snapped the iron latches open to inspect the brass cartridges. “Sixty rounds of rifle lead,” Camila said. She held up a full magazine box with a sharp grin. “And two boxes of heavy slugs for your revolver, Asher.” “Load the rifle,” Asher said. He kept his eyes glued to the dust-choked road ahead where the trees began to thin out. “We are going to need every bullet before this night is over.” “How is the boy holding up?” Camila asked. She glanced back over the worn leather seat. Kaelen wiped a streak of road grime from Michael’s forehead. He rested his hand gently against the child’s shoulder. “He is breathing fine, but his boot
Chapter 179: Ambush
Asher pressed his back flat against the cold concrete wall of the guard shack. He watched four Syndicate soldiers step down from the black transport truck on the upper ledge. The vehicle sat idling sixty yards up the steep gravel path. Its heavy engine rumbled over the sound of the roaring river below. “They are moving down the foot trail,” Camila whispered. She peered around the rusted iron doorframe. “Two riflemen up front, two bringing up the rear.” “Do they see us?” Kaelen asked. He crouched low inside the dark hut with his hand resting gently on the boy’s shoulder. “No,” Asher said. His thumb rested on the hammer of his loaded revolver. “They think the bridge guard is still inside. They are coming down to check the radio line.” “If we wait here, they corner us in this concrete box,” Camila said. Her eyes tracked the lead soldier’s boots on the loose stones. “We have no room to move.” “We do not wait,” Asher said. “We hit the rear pair while the leaders check the shack.” “H
