Chapter 13: Digital Breadcrumbs
The flickering blue light of a cracked burner phone illuminated Seraphine’s face, casting sharp, exhausted shadows across her features as her fingers flew across the tiny glass screen.
"If my father thinks he can wipe my access credentials just because he blew up my primary terminal, he's grossly underestimated how many back doors I left open in his network," Seraphine muttered, her eyes narrowing as lines of cascading green code reflected in her pupils.
"Just make it fast, Sera," Kenji said, pressing a blood-soaked rag harder against the shrapnel graze on his upper arm with a sharp intake of breath. "Every second we sit in this rusted tin can, Voss is tightening the noose around this entire sector. I can already hear the sirens starting to echo from the main avenue."
"I'm not sitting around, Kenji, I'm bypassing his firewall," Seraphine snapped back without looking up, her thumbs dancing across the virtual keyboard with frantic speed. "I'm tapping directly into the city's municipal transit grid to see where they're mobilizing their heavy units. If we know where they're looking, we can stay three steps ahead."
Across the cramped rail-yard carriage, Dorian shivered violently, his arms wrapped tightly around his chest as another wave of the golden fever rolled through his convulsing frame. The 'Shatter-Step' energy beneath his skin pulsed erratically, casting an eerie, amber glow through the fabric of his torn shirt like a dying ember refusing to go out.
"It's... it's not just corporate units," Dorian gasped through clenched teeth, his voice a low, strained rasp as he fought to draw a full breath into his burning lungs. "I can feel the network pinging us. Not corporate. Something... colder. Older."
Seraphine paused, her thumbs freezing over the screen as her head snapped up toward Dorian. "What are you talking about? My father's corporate enforcers don't use decentralized ping signatures. That's a dark-net frequency."
"He's right," Kenji said, abandoning his improvised bandage as his face hardened into a dangerous scowl. He drew his backup pistol from his waistband, pulling the slide back with a sharp, metallic clack that echoed loudly in the confined space of the carriage. "I know that digital footprint anywhere. That's not Voss's private army."
Seraphine’s breath caught in her throat as she stared back down at the burner phone, her fingers tapping a rapid sequence of commands to pull up the intercepted routing data. "No. No, that's impossible. He wouldn't mix corporate assets with—"
"With the Malphas Syndicate?" Kenji finished for her, his eyes flashing with grim realization. He stood up abruptly, nearly hitting his head on the low corrugated ceiling of the railcar. "Augustin Voss didn't just deploy his own mercenaries to hunt us down. He outsourced the dirty work."
"Vane," Seraphine whispered, the name tasting like ash on her tongue as the full scope of her father's ruthlessness finally settled over her. "He enlisted Elder Vane and the Syndicate to close the net. Trading corporate resources for street-level brutality so he has plausible deniability if we're found in a ditch."
"Exactly," Kenji confirmed, pacing the length of the narrow carriage, his boots scraping sharply against the rusted iron floorboards. "Voss handles the high-altitude surveillance and the transit locks, while Vane’s cutthroats scour every alley, sewer, and rat hole between here and the lower docks. We're caught right in the crosshairs of a corporate-syndicate partnership."
Dorian groaned, pressing his forehead against his knees as a fresh shudder wracked his skeletal frame. "Which means... we can't use digital anything anymore, can we?"
"Smart kid," Kenji muttered, turning his gaze sharply toward Seraphine. "Every single electronic pulse, every burner phone signal, every query you run against the municipal grid—Vane's tech-wizards are tracking it in real time. You just painted a massive neon bullseye right on our backs the second you logged into that transit feed."
Seraphine dropped the burner phone as if it had suddenly turned into a live coal. The device clattered against the metal floor, the cracked screen still glowing with lines of active code before finally fading into darkness.
"I had to find out where they were moving the blockade," Seraphine defended herself, her voice rising sharply as panic and indignation warred in her chest. She stood up to face Kenji, her chin tilted defensively. "How else were we supposed to navigate a city locked down by my father's security algorithms? Walk out blindfolded into an ambush?"
"By going completely analog," Kenji snapped back, stepping into her personal space with a menacing glare. "No phones, no terminals, no digital breadcrumbs for them to follow. The moment we rely on screens and servers, we're handing Vane our exact GPS coordinates on a silver platter."
"Fine!" Seraphine threw her hands up in frustration, her breath coming in ragged, angry gasps. "No tech. We rely entirely on your glorious, primitive street smarts. But let me remind you, Kenji, your brilliant syndicate contacts in this district are either dead, locked up, or too drunk to point us toward a safe exit."
"My contacts have kept me alive for twenty years in a city that wanted me buried," Kenji snarled, his hand tightening around the grip of his pistol until his knuckles turned completely white. "What has your father's pristine corporate network done for you lately? How's that family loyalty working out while he tries to vaporize you with a thermobaric charge?"
Before Seraphine could fire back a blistering retort, Dorian raised a trembling hand, his eyes wide and fixed on the floorboards beneath their boots.
"Stop," Dorian whispered, his voice barely audible over the relentless pounding of the rain against the roof, yet sharp enough to instantly freeze both of them in place.
Kenji frowned, lowering his voice. "What is it, kid? Is the fever spiking again?"
"Shh," Dorian hissed, pressing his palms flat against the cold, damp iron of the railcar floor. His body was rigid, every muscle tense as he strained to listen to something neither Kenji nor Seraphine could perceive. "Low-frequency vibration. Heavy boots. Coming up the rail line. Three... no, four of them."
Seraphine’s eyes widened in sheer horror as she looked from Dorian down to the floor, her previous anger instantly evaporating into a paralyzing chill. "They found us."
"Drop!" Kenji roared, lunging forward with terrifying speed to tackle Seraphine to the floor just as the rusted exterior of the rail-yard carriage erupted in a deafening explosion of sound and flying shrapnel.
A high-caliber anti-materiel round punched cleanly through the thick corrugated metal wall of the carriage with the force of a small cannonball, tearing a jagged, smoking hole right through the space where Kenji’s head had been standing barely a microsecond before. Shards of white-hot metal hissed through the air, embedding themselves deep into the opposite wooden crate with vicious crunches.
Outside, the harsh beam of a high-intensity tactical flashlight swept across the rusted exterior of their hiding spot, accompanied by the cold, metallic rack of a heavy-
load rifle bolt slamming another shell into place.

Chapter 30: Spoils of War"He's right around the corner," Dorian gasped, clutching his chest as the crimson light beneath his skin flickered like a dying ember. "Third bulkhead down. He's weaponizing the corridor's security feed.""Let him try," Kenji muttered, sliding his combat knife back into its sheath with a sharp click before ripping a high-pressure steam valve off the auxiliary wall unit. "Seraphine, keep Dorian behind the turbine housing. If Vance gets past me, put a round through his skull. Don't hesitate.""I never do," Seraphine said coldly, dragging the shivering boy out of the line of fire as a dense, blinding white hiss of scalding steam erupted across the narrow metal walkway. The deafening roar of the freighter's engines drowned out the initial sound of the ambush, but the sudden, violent clash of steel against steel echoed sharply through the vibrating lower deck. Kenji lunged into the blinding white wall of vapor, his blade meeting Vance's combat knife with a shower
Turning the Blade
Chapter 29: Turning the Blade"Stay down, Dorian," Kenji snapped, not even turning around as he kept his eyes locked on the twisting maze of steam pipes stretching across the lower engineering deck. "One wrong step and that spinal shunt is going to blow its seals. We don't need you bleeding out before Vance even gets his hands on you.""I’m not... useless," Dorian wheezed, his hands clawing weakly at the rusted metal plating of the deck as another violent tremor wracked his frame. The crimson light glowing beneath the skin of his collarbone pulsed erratically, casting a sickly, bioluminescent hue across his contorted features. "I can feel him. In the static... down the corridor."Seraphine dropped to one knee beside the boy, shoving him firmly back against the bulkhead. "Shut up, Dorian. Listen to Kenji. If Vance is tracking your biometric signature, every word you choke out is basically screaming our GPS coordinates right into his earpiece.""She’s right," Kenji whispered, his body t

Chapter 28: Iron and Steam"Vance isn't the type to wait for a harbor clearance," Kenji muttered, sliding his combat knife from its sheath with a dry, whispering hiss. "He’s already aboard. I found a fresh boot print on the ladder leading down from the main deck—and it definitely doesn't belong to any deckhand on this rust bucket."Seraphine's grip tightened around her weapon, her knuckles turning bone-white in the dim yellow emergency glow of the hold. "How long ago?""Minutes. Maybe less," Kenji replied, his eyes scanning the labyrinth of massive steel pipes and towering auxiliary steam turbines that hummed with a deafening, vibrating roar. "He’s moving quiet. Trying to secure the asset without tripping shipboard alarms or alerting the crew.""Which means he wants Dorian breathing," Seraphine said, casting a sharp glance toward the shivering youth slumped against a bulkhead.Dorian tried to push himself up, his teeth gritted against the sudden, agonizing flare of pain radiating from
The Hunter Aboard
Chapter 27: The Hunter Aboard"They aren't looking at ship logs," Kenji murmured, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the data feed scrolling across the terminal. "They’re tracking the biometric signature of the bio-sample inside you, Dorian. The corporation flagged you as proprietary stolen tech worth more than this entire vessel."Seraphine cursed under her breath, reaching down to steady Dorian as another wave of tremors wracked his frame. "So the port authority thinks we're a coal barge, but the company's elite hunters can still smell us coming a mile away?""Worse," Kenji said, snapping the diagnostic terminal shut with a sharp metallic click. "I saw the deployment logs flash across the port surveillance bypass. They didn't send a cleanup crew. They sent Vance."Dorian raised his head, his pale face slick with cold sweat. "Vance? Who is—""An elite corporate tracker," Kenji cut him off, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low pitch. "The kind of man they send when they want a targe
Crossing the Line
Chapter 26: Crossing the Line"Got it," Kenji hissed, his fingers hammering the final sequence into the diagnostic terminal as a stream of green text cascaded down the cracked screen. "Port authority logs are looping our transponder ghost-signal with a civilian coal barge three miles off our stern. We’re officially invisible.""And the corporate bounty files?" Seraphine demanded, keeping her eyes fixed on the narrow metal ladder leading up to the main deck. "Are we still flagged as missing assets, or did your little analog trick buy us an actual clean slate?""We’re clean on the port registries," Kenji replied, yanking the copper tap wire free and coiling it with sharp, practiced jerks. "As far as the maritime authorities know, the Iron Gander is carrying five hundred tons of low-grade anthracite and nothing else. But the corporation isn't relying on public registries anymore."Dorian shifted uncomfortably against the crate, his hands trembling as he pulled his jacket tighter around h
The Ghost in the Frequencies
Chapter 25: The Ghost in the FrequenciesKenji pulled the analog tap wire tight, wrapping the copper thread around the battered diagnostic terminal resting on the rusted oil drum. Sparks hissed into the damp air of the freighter’s lower hold, casting fleeting orange shadows across the walls of stacked cargo crates."Keep that light steady, Seraphine," Kenji muttered, his fingers flying across the makeshift keyboard with practiced precision. "If I drop this connection before the handshaking protocol locks in, the port authority's digital tripwire will trace us straight back to this bilge."Seraphine adjusted the tactical flashlight clamped between her teeth, her hands busy securing the auxiliary power cell to Dorian’s shivering shoulder. "If you don't hurry up, your precious tripwire won't matter because the corporate cleanup crew will already be boarding us," she hissed, her voice muffled around the metal casing.Dorian sat slumped against a wooden crate, his breathing shallow and err
