Chapter 10: Deep in the Cradle of Humanity
"Aurex, hand me that cylinder thing," Vaelia whispered, her voice echoing softly off the damp metal walls. "The one in the side pocket of my bag. It’s heavy."
"Got it," Aurex muttered. He pulled out a heavy, rusted metal tube, rubbing some of the dirt off the glass lens at the end. "Let's see if the battery cell survived the crash. Flick the switch on the side, Vaelia."
A sharp click cut through the darkness, followed by a sudden, brilliant beam of white light that sliced through the ancient dust.
"Whoa!" Lyra gasped, shielding her eyes with a gloved hand. "What kind of sorcery is that? There’s no light rune on that metal stick!"
"It's called a flashlight, Princess," Aurex said, sweeping the beam across the walls of the tunnel. "No magic, just copper wires and a dry battery. Welcome to the old world."
"It’s beautiful," Vaelia murmured, leaning over Aurex's shoulder to look at the beam of light. "Look at the walls, Aurex. That’s not stone. That’s reinforced steel and alloy plating. It’s completely seamless."
"Yeah, and look at the floor," Aurex pointed the light downward, revealing two parallel iron rails stretching into the absolute blackness of the tunnel. "These are transit tracks."
"Transit?" Lyra asked, taking a hesitant step forward, her silver boots clinking against the rusted iron. "For what? Carriages?"
"For trains," Aurex said. "Giant metal tubes that could carry thousands of people at hundreds of miles per hour. All running on electricity."
"Without magic?" Lyra looked skeptical, her brow furrowing. "How is that even possible? Moving something that heavy without a gravity rune would require a mountain of mana."
"That's because your people rely on magic for everything like a crutch," Aurex said, walking along the tracks. "If your sink leaks, you use a water rune. If you want to go fast, you use a wind rune. People from my world had to actually use their brains."
"Hey, don't look at me," Vaelia laughed, raising her hands. "I'm a beast-kin, we just adapt. It’s the Solarians who think magic is the center of the universe."
"It is the center of the universe," Lyra insisted, though her voice lacked its usual confidence. She looked up at the ceiling, where a faded, peeling sign hung precariously from a metal wire. "What are those symbols? They aren't in the royal script."
Aurex shone the flashlight directly onto the sign. "It says 'Broadway Line - Central Terminal.' It's English."
"English?" Lyra whispered. "The language of the ancient heroes?"
"It’s just a language, Lyra. Not some holy scripture," Aurex sighed, continuing down the track. "But it confirms one thing. This isn't just an ancient ruin. This is a subway station. We're walking through a graveyard of my world."
"A graveyard?" Vaelia's fox ears drooped. "That's a bit grim, isn't it?"
"It’s the truth," Aurex said. "And if we don't find a way out, we’re going to be the newest additions to the collection. Keep moving."
They walked in silence for a few minutes, the steady hum of the ancient generator echoing through the metallic hallway. The air grew colder, carrying a faint, sterile scent of ozone and old copper. Suddenly, the yellow emergency runes on the walls flickered, pointing toward a heavy, sliding steel door on their left.
"Look," Vaelia pointed. "The runes are highlighting that entrance. It says... uh, Aurex, what does it say?"
Aurex shone the light on the faded letters stenciled onto the steel door. "Bio-Defense Division. Authorized Personnel Only."
"Bio-defense?" Lyra asked, her voice tense. "What does that mean? Is it a weapon storage?"
"Only one way to find out," Aurex said, stepping up to the control panel next to the door. He popped the plastic cover off with his wrench, revealing a nest of dusty wires. "Vaelia, give me the copper bypass clip."
"Here," Vaelia handed him a small, spring-loaded metal clamp. "Don't shock yourself. I don't want to carry you."
"Have some faith," Aurex muttered, jamming the clip into the terminal.
With a loud, pneumatic hiss, the heavy steel door slid sideways, revealing a massive, sterile white laboratory. Inside, rows of shattered glass cylinders lined the walls, filled with murky, dried-up green fluid.
"Oh, by the heavens..." Lyra gasped, halting at the threshold. She stared at the center of the room, where a massive, half-decayed creature was suspended in a giant glass tank. "Is that... a Ravager?"
"A Ravager?" Vaelia squeaked, hiding behind Aurex. "Like the shadow beasts from the northern border? The ones that eat entire platoons?"
"It looks like one," Aurex said, walking closer to the tank. He shone the light on a digital display screen next to the cylinder. It was cracked, but the text was still legible. "But look at the label. 'Subject 04: Anti-Magical Suppression Organism. Code name: Ravager.'"
"Subject?" Lyra's voice trembled. "What do you mean, subject? These monsters are demons! They came from the dark rifts to destroy our kingdom!"
"They didn't come from any rifts, Lyra," Aurex said, his voice dropping to a cold, hard tone. He wiped the dust off a nearby computer terminal, tapping the keyboard. The screen flickered to life, displaying a series of logs. "Read this. Or rather, let me read it for you."
"What does it say, Aurex?" Vaelia asked, her voice barely a whisper.
"'Day 402,'" Aurex read aloud. "'The extra-dimensional invaders—designated as 'Mages'—have established three major settlements. Standard ballistic weaponry is ineffective against their kinetic shields. Project Chimera is authorized for immediate deployment to neutralize the biological anomalies. The automated bio-weapons will target any entity utilizing localized mana signatures.'"
The lab went dead silent. The only sound was the faint hum of the computer and Lyra’s ragged breathing.
"Invaders..." Lyra whispered, her eyes wide with horror as she stared at the screen. "We... we are the invaders?"
"Your ancestors were," Aurex said, looking at her with a grim expression. "They came through a dimensional rift, probably fleeing some disaster of their own, and brought their magic with them. This world’s defense systems didn't see you as citizens. It saw you as an invasive species. An infection."
"No... that can't be true," Lyra shook her head, tears welling in her eyes. "The Church of Solaria... my father... they said we were chosen by the heavens! We were brought here to civilize this wild land!"
"Your 'wild land' was a highly advanced civilization," Aurex said, gesturing around the high-tech lab. "The 'demons' your knights have been fighting for three hundred years aren't monsters. They're just the planet's white blood cells. They were bio-engineered to hunt down anyone with a mana signature. That's why they only attack your kingdom and leave the outer zones alone. There’s no magic out here."
"So... the war..." Lyra fell to her knees, her sword clattering against the metal floor. "All those knights... all those lives... we were just fighting the planet's security system?"
"Looks like it," Aurex said, his voice surprisingly gentle as he looked at her. "The system is just doing what it was programmed to do. Protect its home."
"This is crazy," Vaelia muttered, rubbing her temples. "If this is true, then the King's plan to summon an army from Earth... it's going to trigger every single defense system on the planet, isn't it?"
"Worse," Aurex said, turning back to the computer. "If they open a permanent portal, the planetary defense grid will flag it as a class-one extinction event. It won't just send monsters. It will initiate a hard reboot."
"A hard reboot?" Lyra asked, looking up, her face pale.
"It means it will vaporize the crust of the earth to clean out the infection," Aurex said. "Including your kingdom. And mine."
"We have to stop them," Lyra said, her voice suddenly hardening as she stood up, wiping her tears. "Gregory said the dimensional anchor is already active. If they lock the coordinates..."
"Then we need to find the main override terminal," Aurex said, tapping the screen. "And according to this map, the central hub is just through that corridor."
They ran through the sliding doors, their boots echoing loudly against the metallic floor. The yellow emergency runes on the walls had turned to a solid, pulsing orange, flashing rapidly as they reached a massive, circular control room.
In the center of the room, a giant spherical projector hovered in the air, casting a massive hologram of the globe. But the hologram wasn't blue or green. It was glowing a violent, bleeding red.
"Aurex, look!" Vaelia pointed to the console in the center. "It's booting up on its own!"
Suddenly, a cold, synthesized digital voice echoed from the ceiling speakers, making them all jump.
"SYSTEM REBOOT COMPLETE," the computer chimed. "WARNING. DETECTING ANOMALOUS ENERGY EMISSION IN SECTOR 7."
"Sector 7?" Lyra gasped. "Where is that?"
"It's the capital," Aurex gritted his teeth, sprinting to the main console and slamming his hands onto the keyboard. "They've initiated the final sequence. The dimensional anchor is pulling raw power from the regional grid."
"WARNING," the computer voice repeated, its tone growing sharper. "DIMENSIONAL BREACH DETECTED IN SECTOR 7. COORDINATES SIGNED: SOLARIA CASTLE. EARTH MILITARY SIGNATURES DETECTED."
"They did it," Vaelia whispered, her face completely draining of color. "The portal is open. They're dragging Earth's military through."
"Aurex, can you shut it down?" Lyra pleaded, leaning over his shoulder. "Please tell me you can shut it down!"
"I'm trying! But the capital's anchor has locked the connection from their side!" Aurex roared, his fingers blurring across the keys. "They've bypassed the local safety protocols! The energy loop is already backflowing!"
"WARNING," the digital voice boomed, the red lights in the room flashing frantically. "TERRESTRIAL CLEANSE INITIATED. LOCALIZED DEFENSE UNITS ACTIVATED. REPELLING INVADERS."
"Aurex..." Vaelia whimpered, grabbing the sleeve of his jacket. "We have a really, really big problem."
"Not now, Vaelia, I'm trying to hack a military firewall!"
"No, Aurex, seriously, look!" Vaelia pointed toward the dark, shadowed corners of the massive circular room.
From the ventilation shafts and broken glass cylinders, low, guttural growls began to echo. Dozens of glowing red eyes flickered to life in the darkness, moving slowly toward them. The metallic clinking of claws against the steel floor grew louder, casting long, terrifying shadows across the red-lit room.
"The automated defense system," Lyra whispered, drawing her sword, her hands shaking as the red-eyed beasts began to circle them. "It's marked us as invaders."
"Yeah," Aurex sa
id, slowly reaching down to his belt and gripping his heavy wrench. "And it looks like they don't care that I'm from Earth."

He grabbed a heavy metal wrench from his belt and slammed it down onto the primary glass terminal, shattering the screen into a million pieces. He reached into the broken glass, grabbed a thick, glowing blue conduit, and yanked it out with a violent grunt. "Bypass manual override, confirm!"The terminal let out a pathetic, dying whine. The massive stone ring in the sky groaned, its blinding blue light instantly flickering and dimming."Did... did you stop it?" Lyra whispered, her chest heaving as she stared at the sky."Sort of," Aurex panted, leaning heavily against the terminal, his hand bleeding slightly from the broken glass.
