The city was dying, and Leon Vale was the only one who seemed to notice.

From his cracked workshop window, he watched smoke curl above the skyline like dying veins in the sky. The rain had turned black again, falling in thick, greasy drops that hissed and sizzled whenever they touched metal. The world smelled like rust, ozone, and failure.

He wiped the grease from his hands with a rag that was more oil than fabric and leaned back against the half-dead engine on his worktable. The sign outside the garage flickered weakly—VALE MECHANICS—letters buzzing like dying flies.

“Still alive,” Leon muttered, flicking a wrench between his fingers. “That’s more than I can say for the rest of this dump.”

In the slums of District Twelve, power was a luxury. Food, a miracle. People like him—mechanics, scavengers, the ones who fixed the scraps of a broken world—were ghosts. The highborns lived above the smog, in clean towers that reached the clouds. Down here, even breathing hurt.

The old radio on the counter buzzed with static. Leon smacked it, and a newscaster’s panicked voice cut in mid-sentence:

“—we repeat, global communication has failed across all sectors. Energy grids are collapsing, and—wait—something’s—”

Static. Then silence.

Leon frowned. He’d heard rumors for weeks—about strange lights in the sky, about the government vanishing—but he’d stopped believing anything years ago. Whatever was happening, it wasn’t the first apocalypse he’d seen threaten this city.

But then, the light changed.

A low hum rolled across the world, deep enough to make the concrete tremble beneath his boots. The ceiling bulb flickered, dimmed, and exploded in a burst of sparks. Leon ducked as shards rained down, cursing under his breath.

Then came the voice.

Cold. Digital. Inhuman.

[GLOBAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Human civilization reset in progress.]

[All active lifeforms will be reassigned according to compatibility levels.]

[Initializing… The King System.]

Leon’s wrench slipped from his hand, clanging on the floor. “The what?”

He stumbled outside, blinking through the smoke and rain. The street was chaos—people running, screaming, pointing at the sky.

And above them…

The clouds were splitting open.

A thousand streaks of light tore through the heavens, each one falling faster than the last. It wasn’t lightning. It was precise—like a swarm of machines descending on the earth.

Then the sky exploded in white.

Leon’s vision went blank. The ground dropped away.

When he opened his eyes, the world was gone.

The city had collapsed into ruin. Buildings lay like broken ribs across a dead landscape. The smell of ash filled the air. The silence was so deep it pressed against his eardrums.

Leon sat up slowly, rubbing his temples. His workbench, his tools, his life—they were gone. He looked down at himself: same torn jacket, same grease-stained pants, same calloused hands.

But everything else was… different.

There was a faint blue glow beneath his skin, pulsing like veins of light.

Then the voice returned—inside his head this time.

[Welcome, Subject #098233 — LEON VALE.]

[System Integration: 0.01%]

[Assigned Rank: NONE]

[Skill Tree: ERROR]

Leon froze. “Who’s talking?”

[Integration in progress. Please remain conscious.]

He stumbled backward, heart pounding. “Conscious? What the hell is happening—”

[Integration complete.]

[System Status: ACTIVE.]

[Primary Ability: UNKNOWN.]

A faint holographic screen flickered to life before his eyes. He could see it—actually see it. It hovered in the air, transparent and sharp, like something out of a game interface.

He laughed once, hollow. “Oh, great. I’m hallucinating.”

Then the scream came.

Leon spun around just in time to see a man crawling from the wreckage of a nearby car. His eyes glowed faint red. His veins bulged, pulsing with molten light. His mouth opened too wide, and a guttural snarl ripped through the silence.

“Hey—easy,” Leon said, raising his hands. “You need help?”

The man lunged.

He moved too fast. Leon barely had time to react before the thing slammed into him, sending him crashing through the glass door of a shop. He rolled to his feet, coughing, eyes wide.

[Hostile Detected.]

[Activating Defense Protocol.]

“What protocol?!” Leon shouted.

The glowing man charged again, fist swinging like a hammer. Leon ducked, barely avoiding the blow. The wall behind him cracked.

Pain flared through Leon’s body as his system flared to life. His hands burned, glowing faint blue. Instinct screamed at him to grab, to fight.

He caught the man’s arm mid-swing—

And the world went white.

[Predator Protocol Activated.]

[Absorbing System Core…]

[Ability Acquired: Minor Regeneration.]

The red glow in the man’s eyes vanished. His body went limp, collapsing to the ground like a puppet with cut strings.

Leon gasped for air, trembling. “What… did I just do?”

[Host eliminated.]

[Predator points earned: 1.]

[Ability: Minor Regeneration added to core traits.]

He stared at his hands. The glow faded slowly, but the warmth remained. A deep, humming strength now pulsed beneath his skin. He could feel it—alive, hungry.

He looked at the dead man. “You tried to kill me,” Leon muttered. “And I took… whatever was inside you.”

The voice answered, cold as ever.

[You are a Predator King Candidate.]

[Objective: Survive. Hunt. Evolve.]

[Each kill strengthens your throne.]

Leon sank against the wall, heart still racing. His workshop, his city, his world—gone. And in their place, a nightmare.

He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. “Predator King… huh?” He chuckled softly. “Figures I’d end up in the one apocalypse that sounds like a bad game.”

He stood, glancing at the horizon. Fires burned in the distance. The ruins stretched endlessly, and through the haze, he could see faint, glowing figures moving—other survivors. Or maybe other monsters.

[New Quest Unlocked: Rise from the Ashes.]

[Objective: Survive the first night.]

[Reward: System upgrade unlocked.]

Leon’s eyes narrowed. His lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile.

He had no money, no home, no family left—but for the first time in his life, he had power.

“Alright then,” he murmured. “If the world wants a king…”

He turned toward the smoke and began to walk.

“…it’ll damn well get one.”

Lightning cracked across the dead city, illuminating the wreckage of mankind.

And beneath it, Leon Vale took his first step toward becoming the Last King.

It wasn’t electricity — it was alive, pulsing through the steel like veins under skin.Leon stood across from Darius, breathing slow and even. The faint glow beneath his skin pulsed in rhythm with the walls.“You’re working for the Apex,” Leon said, his voice low but steady.Darius smiled faintly. “Working with him. There’s a difference.”“Not one that matters.”“Oh, it matters,” Darius said, stepping closer. “You’re still clinging to the old world — the one where humans ruled and machines served. But that world died the day the Apex woke up. You can’t kill the future, Leon. You can only join it.”Leon’s fists clenched. “You sound like him.”“I sound like you,” Darius said calmly. “Because deep down, you already agree. You just haven’t admitted it yet.”Leon’s jaw tightened. “You’re wrong.”“Am I? You’ve tasted the power. You’ve used it. The System doesn’t lie.
