The rain over Pier 14 grew heavier as midnight approached, turning the ground near the main iron gate into a sea of cold mud.

Outside the fence, Raymond Sterling stood under a small umbrella bought from a nearby gas station. His expensive leather shoes were completely ruined, soaked through with muddy water. His loose jaw bandage hung near his chin, and his arms trembled as he gripped a heavy black briefcase containing two hundred thousand dollars in cash.

For three long hours, Raymond stood outside the gate in the cold rain. Every time he tried to shout at the booth, the two dock workers inside simply turned up their radio, ignoring him.

"Open the gate!" Raymond screamed, his voice hoarse from the wind. "I am Raymond Sterling, CEO of the Sterling Group! I have your money!"

Finally, the heavy iron gate clicked open with a loud metallic groan.

Director Thomas stepped out, wearing a thick raincoat over his faded blue uniform. He carried an old flashlight, casting a bright beam across Raymond’s pale face and soaked clothes.

"You're making a lot of noise for a man who owes us money, Mr. Sterling," Thomas said calmly.

"You think I want to stand out here in the rain?" Raymond spat, stepping forward. "I've been waiting for three hours!"

Raymond rushed forward, almost slipping in the mud, and shoved the leather briefcase toward Thomas’s chest. "Take it! Two hundred thousand dollars in cash! Now sign the release form for the limestone quarry so my trucks can move!"

Thomas caught the briefcase cleanly without opening it immediately. He looked down at Raymond’s ruined shoes, then up into his desperate eyes.

"Six months ago, Mr. Sterling, our drivers stood in your office lobby for four hours begging for this exact payment," Thomas said softly. "You had security throw them into the street and called them uneducated beggars."

Raymond’s jaw twitched violently as he glared at the old man. "That was a business delay! I'm paying you now, so give me the signed release!"

"Is that what you call it?" Thomas asked, unzipping the briefcase to check the thick stacks of bills under his flashlight. "A business delay while our workers couldn't buy medicine for their children?"

"Just sign the damn paper, Thomas!" Raymond snapped, shivering in the cold. "You have your cash!"

Thomas zipped the briefcase closed, his face remaining neutral. "The debt is cleared, Mr. Sterling. However, the quarry lien cannot be lifted tonight."

Raymond froze, his eyes bulging in pure terror. "What?! Why not?! I just paid you!"

"Because our legal clearance department operates during official business hours," Thomas replied, turning his back to walk toward the office. "Come back tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock, and if our legal advisor approves the paperwork, we will consider releasing the lien."

"Tomorrow afternoon?!" Raymond shrieked, trying to run after him. "My site will lose fifty thousand dollars by noon! You old fool, I will ruin you!"

Two heavy dock workers stepped into his path, blocking him with their broad shoulders. "That's far enough, CEO Raymond," one of them growled.

"Go home, Mr. Sterling," Thomas called back without turning around. "The mud is getting deep."

High on the second floor, behind the glass window of the office, Adrian stood in the shadows. He watched Raymond stumble back toward his sedan in pure humiliation while his father's old mechanical watch ticked steadily on his wrist.

He thought money could erase six months of arrogance in five minutes, Adrian thought quietly. He still doesn't understand that respect cannot be bought on credit.

Later that afternoon, as new transport manifests were distributed to the drivers, a modest silver sedan pulled up outside the main gate of Northwind Logistics.Elena Sterling stepped out of the car. She wore a simple charcoal blouse and trousers, her long black hair tied neatly behind her. Her face looked tired, but her eyes were filled with quiet determination as she carried a leather folder containing her company's legal documents. After seeing Northwind’s heavy trucks haul her silk cargo to the harbor yesterday, Elena had been unable to sleep. She needed to know who was behind Northwind's sudden transformation and why this rising giant had chosen to help her small, struggling firm.As she walked into the clean main lobby of the office building, Director Thomas met her with a mug of black coffee."Miss Elena Sterling?" Thomas asked politely, stepping forward. "What brings the daughter of the Sterling family to our quiet harbor?"Elena bowed her head slightly with genuine respect, con

The lingering storm clouds had passed, revealing a clean, blue sky.Inside the large conference room on the ground floor of Northwind Logistics, twenty men sat around a long wooden table. They were the senior truck drivers, warehouse supervisors, and maintenance chiefs of Sector 109—men whose hands were calloused from decades of hard work.At the head of the table sat Adrian Veyron. He wore a clean dark suit, and on his right index finger, the dark iron Sovereign Ring gleamed softly under the lights. Beside him stood Lawyer Winston, holding his mahogany cane, while Director Thomas sat to his right with a stack of financial documents. The room was completely quiet. The veteran workers looked at Adrian with a mixture of curiosity and deep respect, having heard how he brought the arrogant Sterling family to their knees."Gentlemen," Adrian began, his voice quiet, clear, and commanding immediate attention. "For three ye

While Northwind’s heavy trucks hauled Elena's cargo through the western district, a different scene unfolded at the central city plaza. The construction site of the Sterling Group’s flagship project lay silent.Dozens of towering cranes stood frozen against the sky. Heavy concrete mixers sat parked along the perimeter, the wet cement inside slowly hardening into rock. Over fifty hired workers sat on crates near the gate, arguing loudly with the site foreman.Inside the temporary site office, the air was hot and suffocating.Raymond Sterling slammed both fists onto the plastic table, knocking over architectural plans. His face was red, his eyes bloodshot, and his jaw bandage was soaked with sweat."What do you mean they refuse to pour the foundation?!" Raymond roared at his chief site engineer. "I paid your crew three days ago!""You paid our base wages, CEO Raymond!" the engineer shouted back, wiping grease from his forehead. "You didn't pay the material transport fees! The cement fact

  • 14. The Quiet Current

The afternoon sun hung low over the western mill district, casting long shadows across the old brick walls. Unlike the busy financial center with its tall towers, this area relied on real, hard work. Rows of heavy looms hummed inside the factories, turning raw cotton into finished cloth.A modest building near the edge of the district bore a wooden sign reading Veyron & Sterling Garments.Inside the small office, Elena stood before a wooden packing table with her sleeves rolled up. Her hair was tied back in a loose knot, and her face looked pale with fatigue. For three days, she had worked fourteen-hour shifts to run her independent clothing line after leaving her brother’s chaotic office.Beside her, Chloe sat on a metal stool, staring miserably at a stack of unpaid bills. Dark circles showed under her eyes where heavy makeup used to be."Elena," Chloe muttered, her voice whining softly. "The fabric supplier just called again. If our trucks don't collect the silk by five o'clock toda

The front desk phones rang endlessly. Local drivers and port contractors called to verify the morning news, as regional manager Haryo Prasetyo had just been arrested for corporate bribery.Upstairs in the director’s office, Adrian stood near the window with his hand resting in his pocket. He gently brushed his thumb against his father’s old watch. Outside, four heavy Northwind trucks rolled smoothly out of the main gate with steady engines.Behind him, Director Thomas hung up the landline with trembling hands. "The port authority officially released the hold on our remaining trucks," Thomas reported, holding a stack of delivery manifests. "Ironclad's local accounts are frozen, and their r
