The courtyard stank of blood and ash. Bones littered the stones like fallen leaves, the air thick with the weight of spent magic. Ragnar’s hulking corpse lay still, but the silence was far from peaceful.

The Headmaster stood at the center of it all, robes barely stirring though the night wind still howled. His presence pressed down on the survivors like gravity itself. His eyes traced from Kai, to Alice, to the shattered ranks of skeletons, then to Sarah and her squad.

“You survived.” The words weren’t praise. They were a sentence.

Kai tightened his grip on the fading Bloodwind Blade. Every instinct screamed not to bow, not to speak first.

Sarah stepped forward instead, her boots scraping against the stone. “He didn’t just survive,” she snapped. “He won.” Her eyes were hard, her chin high. She didn’t so much as glance at the Headmaster when she said it — her gaze was fixed entirely on Kai.
