9. The Girl Who Smiles

The back mountain was quiet, with a bright moon and few stars. In the dead of night, someone was still cultivating so diligently, which stirred Linfen's heart. He categorized that person as one of his own kind, and a feeling of mutual appreciation gradually grew. A sense of curiosity drove him to walk forward. 

After navigating several bends and pushing aside the branches obstructing his view, a delicate figure suddenly appeared before him. Upon seeing this person, Linfen was shocked.  

Her slender figure and fiery red dress stood out vividly in the night; it was none other than the little girl who had been bullied on the street during the day. 

She appeared slightly younger than Linfen, her long, flowing hair appearing even more ethereal against the backdrop of dew that had appeared out of nowhere. Her red robe perfectly accentuated her slender figure. Her exposed hands were as white as jade, and although the daytime wounds had left some red marks on them, they did not detract from their beauty in the slightest. 

Her pretty face still held a touch of childlike innocence unique to her age, and her eyes, sparkling like stars, subtly revealed a hint of cunning and a mischievous spirit. Anyone who looked at her would think she was a bright and spirited little girl. 

She was empty-handed, constantly thrusting her palms forward and dodging. Her elbows were raised, and her feet were lightly lifted, her lithe body moving left and right like a clever monkey. 

Her hands moved rapidly, creating afterimages under the moonlight. However, Linfen knew that this little girl's cultivation level seemed to be much lower than his own. He could tell from the speed of her palm strikes, her dodging speed, and even the occasional gusts of wind she created. 

Linfen quietly observed the girl's entire training process from the shadows. However, as he watched, his brows furrowed deeply. The more he watched, the more something seemed amiss. The girl's training consisted almost entirely of defensive movements; even her palm strikes appeared to be aimed at preventing others from getting close. He hadn't even seen her throw a punch. 

Seeing the little girl like this, for some unknown reason, Linfen felt a surge of protective instinct towards her. She was a girl imbued with the spirit of heaven and earth, untouched by worldly concerns. Thinking it, he acted immediately, but the rustling of leaves he made instantly alerted the girl to his presence! 

"Hey! Who's there? Come out quickly! I... I'm not afraid of you!" The girl seemed a little scared, her voice trembling slightly, which made her look incredibly cute with her unique big eyes.  

Linfen shook his head, and having no intention of hiding any longer, he immediately revealed himself. 

The girl tilted her head, looked at Linfen, and then pouted and asked, "Why were you peeking at me while I was practicing? Are you a bad guy?" 

Linfen was clearly surprised for a moment, unconsciously touched his nose, and said with a wry smile, "Do I really look that much like a bad guy?"  

The girl stared at Linfen again, and then nodded seriously, making Linfen not know whether to smile or not. 

"We met during the day today, don't you remember? I was with Sister Yuna, the one standing next to her!" Linfen could only explain helplessly. 

Hearing Linfen say that, the girl looked at Linfen again, then suddenly slapped her head and exclaimed excitedly, "I remember now, you're the follower." 

Linfen's face immediately turned green. What did she mean by "follower"? He was clearly a bodyguard! Linfen was too lazy to argue with the girl. With a bitter face, he thought, "This girl is definitely not one to stay still." 

"Hey, what are you doing here in the first place? And why are you peeking at me practicing? Don't you know I don't like people watching me practice?" 

Linfen was truly speechless. Looking at the girl in front of him, he couldn't connect her with the pitiful little girl from earlier that day. This made him secretly regret why he had run out and run into this little girl. As the saying goes, curiosity killed the cat, and it was indeed true. 

"Little sister, I just came here to practice my skills. I only came over out of curiosity because I heard some noise! ​​Why do you think I'm a bad person?" 

"Hmph, who told you to hide like that? What else could you be but a bad person?" The girl was unforgiving, and her manner made Linfen feel like she was completely under his control. This girl's innocence hadn't faded at all! Even Linfen, who possessed a childlike heart, couldn't help but sigh in admiration. 

"Alright, alright! I won't argue with a little sister like that!" 

"Don't call me little girl! You're not much older than me! You're a bad person!" 

"If I don't call you little sister, what should I call you? Should I call you big sister, or just some random name like cat?" Linfen rarely made a joke. After all, they were still children, and who knows what funny or embarrassing things the two innocent kids would say together! 

"You're a bad person, a bad person!" The girl could only keep repeating this sentence when she realized she couldn't argue with Linfen. Linfen couldn't help but roll his eyes at her. When the girl saw Linfen's gaze, she was a little embarrassed and her face turned slightly red. This made Linfen secretly feel smug. 

Little sister, what's your name?" Seeing the awkward atmosphere, Linfen took the initiative to ask. Seeing that the girl didn't intend to answer, Linfen couldn't help but purse his lips. After a while, just as Linfen was about to turn and leave... 

The girl said softly, "My name is Lan Lachen. I was found by my adoptive mother on a beautiful morning! So they named me Lachen, hoping that I would cherish the beautiful morning!"  

After saying that, she gave Linfen a big smile. 

Upon hearing this, Linfen paused, and looking at the slightly bitter smile on the girl's face, he couldn't help but feel a sense of shared misfortune. 

Although she seemed a little mischievous at this moment, it was precisely this that made her all the more heartbreaking. Despite her misfortune, you could always see the most genuine smile on her face. 

"Lachen? My name is Linfen. If it's alright, I hope we can become good friends." Linfen extended his hand and said in a barely audible voice, "Because we are the same kind of people!" 

Although her voice was very soft, you could clearly feel the girl pause after she finished speaking. Then she reached out her hand to Linfen and said, "Great! Now I have another good friend. Hehe, this feels so good!" She even stuck out her little tongue and winked mischievously. 

"Oh, right, I noticed that the moves you used earlier were all defensive and none of them were offensive?" Linfen said to Lachen as if he had just remembered something, with a hint of confusion and doubt in his eyes. 

"This is because...this is because..." Lachen hesitated, her voice stammering, as if she had a hard time speaking, which made Linfen very anxious. "That's because only in this way will I not feel pain when playing games with her brothers. That way, no matter how my brothers treat me, I won't be afraid! Besides, I don't like hitting people, so I haven't learned any attack moves!" 

After hearing Lachen's words, Linfen's eyes widened. He never expected that the reason would be like this. Recalling how Lachen was bullied by others during the day, how sad and helpless she was, a string in Linfen's heart was deeply touched! 

Linfen's voice trembled slightly as he looked at Lachen, who was blinking her big eyes. He couldn't say a word, and a desire to protect her grew in his heart. 

"Lachen, from now on, I'll be your big brother, okay? That way you won't be bullied anymore. With me here, you won't be afraid!" Linfen's voice was soft, but firm. This was the first time Linfen had made a promise, determined to protect this poor little girl! 

Lachen stared wide-eyed at Linfen, her small face filled with determination. Their eyes met, and Lachen's eyes gradually reddened, a single tear glistening on her delicate face, a mixture of excitement and emotion welling up inside her. She nodded repeatedly, overwhelmed by the sudden warmth, simply nodding in agreement. 

From childhood, she had been a lowly adopted daughter, taken in by her adoptive mother. Her adoptive mother died shortly after taking her in, leading the family to believe she was an unlucky girl. She suffered constant bullying over the years, the only person who truly cared for her being her adoptive mother's biological daughter, her older sister, Lan Yun.  

Receiving care from someone other than her sister at this moment filled her with a warm feeling. 

Actually, she didn't want much; she just wanted others to like her a little more and not dislike her, that's all. Looking at the girl who couldn't help but fall into his arms, Linfen's eyes also reddened. This girl stirred a strong protective instinct in him. 

Despite her tragic past, she always wears the most genuine smile. She silently bore her inner suffering alone. Even when hurt, she still had a smile on her face. Even when abandoned by everyone, she always tried to be the happiest version of herself! 

At this moment, Linfen only had six words to describe the pitiful girl in front of him: a girl who always wore a smile, gave warmth to others, and knew her own suffering. Those six words were: "A girl who smiles while hurting!"
