Chapter seven

Orion and Lydia left the five-star restaurant and boarded a taxi back to the Whitmore mansion. As soon as they arrived, Orion noticed the look on Lydia's face.

She looked upset but at the same time a bit scared. He could easily discern both of them, as he knew her situation more than anyone else.

Before he could ask, she noticed his stare and subconsciously spoke.

“What if Lucas harms my family business? You saw how enraged he looked right? I feel he could do something stupid.”

“Don’t worry about it. You did nothing wrong. He had ulterior motives after all, and we were able to figure him out.” Orion assured her.

A thought popped into his head, and he added,

“I want you to save every message and document related to Lucas's investment proposal. Can you do that for me?” He asked unexpectedly.

Lydia looked at him for a while. Though she didn’t understand why he wanted the details, she had no issues assembling them for him, so she nodded in agreement.

Soon, both of them walked hand in hand into the house.

Meanwhile, back at the restaurant.

Lucas called Damien shortly after to vent his frustration.

“That damn brat actually dared to intervene in our business, and we couldn't agree. Why did you let her bring him over?” He roared into the phone as soon as it was picked up.

“He dared to embarrass me and spoke bashful remarks. Damn it! I wish I could have skinned him alive!” He continued, his teeth gnashing tightly.

Damien was shocked, but given Orion's character, it was likely to have happened. Without dragging words out, he apologized instead.

“I am sorry for what happened. You shouldn’t worry much; I’ll get that punk to go kneel and apologize to you.”

When Lucas heard this, he wasn’t convinced. The scene that happened earlier replayed in his head, giving him more reason to doubt.

“I feel he must have received military or security training.” He replied.

“Military training? That lazy, unemployed brute?” Damien laughed it off like it was the most ridiculous joke he ever heard.

Lucas went on to narrate everything that happened to Damien, causing the latter to fall into a daze. It took him a while to process what he heard before he replied.

“It must be a trick or two he learned somewhere. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about, trust me.”

Shortly, he proceeded to add.

“I think Orion was only trying to make himself appear important; that’s all. Don’t think too much about it.”

Lucas inhaled sharply. He said nothing for a while. Instead, he decided to wait for the information he wanted, and only then would he actually figure out Orion's identity.

….

Later that afternoon, Orion took a casual walk through the neighborhood out of boredom. It had been a while, so he wanted to familiarize himself with the place and see if there were new inventions around.

However, while he was returning, he suddenly noticed the same vehicle as the previous night parked in the same location. The driver had his predatory gaze on the mansion, watching it closely.

Orion's eyes narrowed, and without thinking much, he immediately began to approach the vehicle.

Scrrrrrrrrh!

At the same time, the driver noticed the figure approaching, and without delay, he floored the gas pedal and sped out of the area hastily.

Orion didn’t make further attempts to chase after it, but instead, he memorized the plate number and sent it to Ethan with an additional text, ordering him to investigate the vehicle.

Thereafter, he hung around the area for a while when a call came. It was from Ethan.

“Hello, sir. I have found information about the vehicle. It belongs to a private security company that provides services to wealthy businesses in Crestwood City.” Ethan reported but there was more.

“Recently, the company received funding from an investment group connected to Adrian Blackwell.”

A sharp glint emerged in Orion's eyes at once.

“I think the driver might be monitoring Lydia or the Whitmore family.” He suspected after pondering for a while.

Ethan felt the same. And for that reason, they had to quickly take action about it.

“Sir, would you like to arrange a protective detail?”

Orion didn’t hesitate. After all, when it came to Lydia, she was everything that mattered to him.

“Sure. Do that, but make sure the guards do not frighten her or interfere with her daily activities.” Orion agreed, seeing it as a good idea.

“Also, investigate the connection between Adrian and the investment agreement we discussed previously.” He added.

“Understood, sir. I’ll get to work.” Ethan acknowledged, and the call came to an end.

After inserting the phone back into his pocket. Orion headed into the mansion, still consumed in a few thoughts concerning recent events.

“You damn ungrateful brat. How dare you embarrass the family by confronting Mr. Lucas? Do you actually want to be kicked out?”

Damien's furious roar cut in from the entrance of the mansion.

Orion sighed and looked at him.

“My wife deserves to be treated with respect.” He said solemnly.

“Respect?” Damien let out a cold snort. “Respect is earned through money and status.”

Orion shrugged his shoulders. “Well, money cannot buy character.”

Seeing his stubborn and nonchalant attitude, Damien became disgusted and infuriated.

“Punk, do you believe I’d get you both thrown out?”

“I don’t mind. Besides, my wife is free to leave whenever she chooses, and I will support her decision.” Orion said, looking unfazed.

Damien’s face paled in shock when he heard this and at Orion's confidence. He had expected the man to go on his knees and grovel at his feet to beg, but what was happening was the opposite.

Unable to contain his anger, he pointed at Orion and wanted to curse at him when his phone began to ring.

He immediately pulled out his phone, and when he saw the caller, his eyes widened. It was a private number.

Damien knew who the caller was after all, so he proceeded to pick up.

“Hello,” Damien picked up with slight trembling hands.

“Sir, Damien, we have identified a possible connection in Orion's background.”

The caller then proceeded to explain a few more things, making Damien’s body tremble even more. When the call came to an end, he was already sweating profusely.

Subconsciously, he looked back at Orion, who was still standing before him, and realized that indeed, this man whom they had been mocking and taking for a nobody was much higher than the Whitmore family could ever think.

Meanwhile, at the entrance of a military conference center within Crestwood, two figures alighted from an SUV. One was Ethan, while the other, a middle-aged man clad in military attire, was General Marcus Hale. The man was a highly respected senior officer who had served alongside Orion during several classified operations. He had received information earlier from Ethan about Orion's return to Crestwood. Though the news was very surprising, he decided to go to Crestwood to confirm things for himself.“Where is he now?” As they approached the building, Marcus asked curiously. “He’s living with his wife in the Whitmore villa,” Ethan said with a sigh.“What?” Marcus almost choked on his spit, and he froze in his tracks. His face paled in shock. He didn’t expect Orion, who had so much luxury at his disposal and also a private residence to settle for something less, especially with how the Whitmore family had a record of treating him and his wife badly. After a while, he shook his head

The next day.Lydia received an invitation to a private business launch with an investor, Lucas Vance, who had attended the previous day's dinner party. In the details of the invite, Lucas explained that the meeting had the potential for an investment that could save Whitmore Globals from financial difficulties; however, Lydia didn’t buy it.Unfortunately, she had been very wary of Lucas since their previous meeting. Rather than focusing on the topic, he had spewed harsh remarks about her marriage and suggested that she would be happier with a more successful man.He might not have said it directly, but his actions hinted at who he meant-him. She couldn’t bring herself to believe the meeting he was inviting her to would be any different. That was why when he proposed offering Orion a job, she didn’t like the idea.“You have to attend!” Damein stood by the door shortly after giving her the invitation. He noticed the dejected look on her face and immediately added. “Mr. Lucas is an im

Moments after the dinner ended, Orion went off to look for Lydia. While he was busy pondering the report Ethan gave him, she seemed to have gone somewhere. He kept searching until he arrived at the small guest room within the mansion. When he looked inside, he saw Lydia seated on a couch, seemingly going through a stack of documents. Orion frowned. It was almost midnight, and while most family members had gone off to sleep, she was still awake.“Hey baby, are you still awake?” He opened the door gently so he wouldn't startle her.Regardless, it did. Lydia’s body perked up, and she immediately piled the documents and tried to hide them.Orion shook his head with a slight smile. He had seen it and had walked over already, yet she wanted to hide them?Though, he did understand her actions. She might not want him to be worried. However, as her husband, he couldn't help the feeling.“The company is struggling financially right?” He guessed as he took a seat close to her. Lydia blushed as

The next day arrived. Victor, the head of the Whitmore family organized a private dinner for business associates and friends to discuss the latest improvements to the family business. Every family member was expected to participate, including Lydia and Orion. They might not be held in any important regard; however, as the family tradition, everyone was supposed to attend.Inside the storeroom, Lydia pulled out a couple of male clothes she had kept from years ago. She had made sure to keep them clean and safe with the hope that one day Orion was going to return.Though they were outdated and weren’t fitted for such an occasion as per family standards, they were still good-looking and neat.“I am so sorry that this is all I can get. I couldn't buy you a new set of clothes.” Lydia said with a heavy heart. She had seen the flashy clothes the other family wore, and to say these were at the rock bottom wasn’t at all an exaggeration.“I’ll wear this one.” Orion didn’t think much about it.

“I bet even if we wait for years, he won’t be able to prove anything to us.” Victor sighed and shook his head. He could have looked away; however, because of the family reputation, he decided to reconsider his decision at least.“You can remain in the mansion temporarily, but that’s because Lydia refuses to let you leave,” he said. Hearing what he said, the other family members looked at him with deep frowns on their faces. They wanted to object, but because he was the head of the family, no one dared to. However, his next words reclaimed the lost smiles back on their faces.“However you shall receive no special treatment!”He specified before calling out for one of the guards.“Prepare the store room for him.” He ordered.Everyone was very pleased with this. Though Orion could remain on the premises, they wouldn't mind him staying there, as it was no different from trash.“You should be grateful that you have somewhere to sleep.” Damein chuckled heartily right in Orion's face to g
