"If you're done coughing your lungs out onto my boots, we have five minutes before the next boulder flattens this cellar," Drovic growled, kicking a chunk of smoldering oak away from the threshold of the reinforced coal bunker.

Aerovan wiped his mouth with the back of a black-stained hand, his chest heaving as he stared down at the jagged gray fragment he had just clawed out of the rubble. It didn't look like much—just a lump of heavy, dull-gray stone, rough-edged and lifeless, torn from the ou

  • Chapter 22: The Silent Watcher

The grease-slicked stones of Baker’s Row steamed in the bitter morning air, carrying the sharp, stomach-turning stench of burnt tallow and scorched horsehair. Across the debris-choked intersection, the Iron Duchy’s vanguard had dissolved into a swearing, slipping mass of metal-clad infantry trying desperately to crawl backward out of the killing zone. Drovic hauled his massive smithing hammer over his shoulder, his chest heaving as he spat a glob of grey phlegm onto the soot-stained cobblestones."They're pulling back through the side alleys!" Drovic shouted, wiping a thick forearm across his sweat-streaked forehead. "They’ve had enough of the grease!""Don't celebrate yet, you old fool," Lysenne snapped, her voice cutting through the ragged cheers of the surviving East District irregulars. She stood tall atop the battered grain cart, her grip tight on the splintered ash-wood pole of the royal standard. Her eyes weren't fixed on the retreating infantr

  • Chapter 21: The Retake

"Push them back! Now!" Lysenne’s voice cracked over the roar of the burning grease, slicing through the din of scraping iron and shouted curses. Her royal standard—a tattered, soot-blackened banner of gold thread hanging from a splintered ash-wood pole—slammed into the cobblestones as she vaulted directly onto the weathered top of a grain cart. The wood groaned under her boots, but she held her ground, her eyes locked on the slipping, cursing vanguard of the Iron Duchy sliding helplessly in the boiling tallow."They’re losing their footing!" Drovic bellowed, his massive frame blocking the mouth of the alley like a masonry pillar. In his right hand, he swung a heavy smithing hammer with a head the size of a water bucket. "Don't let them catch their balance! Give them the scrap-iron!"Barnaby, still coughing up the acrid remnants of phlogiston smoke, lunged forward with a canvas sack full of jagged iron caltrops and rusted carriage spikes.

  • Chapter 20: Lysenne’s Command

"Drop the oil right where the alley narrows, Barnaby! Don't let them spread out past the bakery lintel!" Princess Lysenne screamed over the deafening clatter of iron-shod boots closing in on Baker’s Row. Her voice carried none of the polished courtly cadence she had been raised with in the high spires of the royal palace; it was ragged, sharp with adrenaline, and hardened by the bitter soot of the East District.Barnaby, his face streaked with black powder and sweat, shoved the heavy iron bucket off the lip of the low stone wall with a desperate grunt. "It’s boiling over! Watch your boots!"A thick, viscous wave of burning tallow and rendered fat cascaded down the steep, cobblestone slope of the narrow lane, hissing violently as it met the puddles of rainwater. Seconds later, the Iron Duchy’s vanguard—dozens of medium infantrymen encased in heavy, steam-treated plate armor—surged around the corner. The lead soldier’s iron-cleated boo

  • Chapter 19: Breach at the Baker’s Row

"They’re not stopping for the dust!" Drovic roared, his boots crunching over the freshly shattered masonry as he hauled a heavy crate of iron caltrops into the center of the narrow, soot-stained lane. "Barnaby, get that shoulder-cannon reloaded before the smoke clears or we’re going to be fighting these tin bastards with kitchen knives!""My ears are still bleeding, Drovic!" Barnaby shouted back, stumbling over a jagged chunk of granite with the heavy steel tube cradled awkwardly against his chest. His face was caked in grey soot, and his eyes watered profusely from the lingering phlogiston fumes. "Give me ten seconds to clear the jammed casing!""You don't have ten seconds!" Lysenne's voice cut through the rising chaos like a honed blade. She sprinted down the alleyway from the forward observation post, her once-pristine royal silk tunic now stiffened with dried mud and black powder burns. In her hands, she dragged an iron bucket filled to the brim with bu

  • Chapter 18: The Iron Vanguard

Barnaby's knuckle-joints clicked like dry kindling as he hauled the crude ignition lanyard downward, his heels digging deep into the red Valorian muck."Brace!" Drovic bellowed, slamming his massive palms against the timber bulkhead behind the mill worker to keep the backblast from tearing the entire barricade off its stone foundations. The shoulder-cannon did not roar; it shrieked. A concussive wave of superheated gas and unburnt phlogiston tore from the rear exhaust vent, completely obliterating a stacked tier of sandbags and blowing the heavy timber door off a nearby bakery. Fifty yards down the cratered boulevard, a dummy target constructed from discarded golem plating and packed earth simply ceased to exist, replaced instantaneously by a dense, expanding cloud of grey, choking dust."Mother of the Forge," Barnaby gasped, stumbling backward out of the smoke with his ears ringing and his charred sleeve smoking merrily. He stared down at his intact, if violently trembling, right arm

  • Chapter 17: Testing the Kick

"Move back, all of you! Clear the line!" Drovic roared, his heavy frame bracing against the mud-slicked stone of the barricade as he heaved the monstrous steel apparatus onto his shoulder.Lysenne waved her arm frantically, pushing a group of wide-eyed neighborhood children and civilian volunteers deeper into the cover of the ruined cellar stairway. "I said back behind the stone line! If this recoil-absorption rig fails, the shrapnel will take your heads off before the Iron Duchy ever reaches us!""Quit shouting, Princess, you're making my shoulder ache worse than the metal already is," muttered Barnaby, a displaced timber-mill worker whose left sleeve hung empty and blood-stained. He stepped forward, his boots squelching in the red Valorian mud, and gripped the heavy iron firing handle with a white-knuckled fist. "Hand me the ignition lanyard, Drovic. Let's see if this pipe-dream of Aerovan's actually turns an iron-clad golem into scrap, or just blows my arm clean out of its socket."
