The taxi came to a stop several meters away. The driver stepped out quickly and moved to open the rear passenger door. “Sorry for the delay, young man,” the elderly driver said warmly.

Jack immediately recognized him as the same driver who had offered him a ride earlier when his own car had been delayed.

Diana stepped out of the Rolls-Royce and headed straight to the entrance, hoping Jack was behind her.

He headed towards the taxi driver instead. As he approached the taxi, he reached into his pocket instinctively. “My wallet is still at home.”

The driver waved the concern away with a smile. “You can pay me another day.”

“I insist,” he said with so much concern

“You helped me carry my groceries,” the man replied. “We’re even.”

Jack smiled in return. “Thank you.”

As he stepped out, several servants near the entrance exchanged curious glances.

“Who came in the taxi?” one of them whispered.

Another shrugged. “No idea.”

The Sterling family’s butler adjusted his white gloves and walked down the steps, expecting another distinguished guest. Instead, he found Jack calmly closing the taxi door.

The butler blinked, momentarily thrown off.

Inside the mansion, Margaret Sterling stood near a grand crystal window, dressed elegantly in a navy evening gown. She observed each arriving guest with careful attention as board members, business partners, and family friends entered one by one.

Each arrival met her expectations. Then she noticed the taxi. Her brows drew together. “What is that doing here?”

Richard glanced up from the sitting room, where he had been pretending to read financial reports. “A taxi?”

Margaret frowned. “Did one of the staff order something?”

“I doubt it.”

Both of them turned their attention back to the entrance just as Jack stepped into view.

Margaret tilted her head. “Who is that?”

Richard narrowed his eyes. “I don’t know.”

Outside, the butler approached Jack. “Can I help you?”

Jack offered a polite smile. “I’m looking for Diana Sterling.”

The butler’s expression shifted, confusion softening into uncertainty. “Oh… you must be…”

He hesitated, struggling to reconcile what he saw. “…a delivery driver?”

Jack chuckled lightly. “No.”

Before the awkward moment could stretch further, Diana hurried across the driveway. “You are here? I thought you got lost.”

Jack nodded. “I noticed it's a big house.”

From inside, Margaret’s voice dropped to a whisper. “She knows him.”

Richard stood. “So she does.”

The grand doors opened. Diana climbed the steps toward her parents, her posture composed and deliberate. Jack followed a few steps behind, unhurried.

Margaret leaned closer to her husband. “Do you think he’s the chauffeur?”

Richard frowned. “Perhaps.”

“He doesn’t look like a businessman.”

“No,” Richard admitted. “He looks…”

Margaret searched for the word that best captured her impression. “…ordinary.”

The butler stepped aside. “Miss Sterling has arrived.”

Richard forced a polite smile. Then his gaze shifted past his daughter.

The smile froze.

The young man standing beside her wore simple clothes. There was no designer watch, no tailored suit, no visible sign of wealth or status. Nothing about him aligned with what they had expected.

Margaret lowered her voice. “Is he the driver?”

Diana answered immediately. “No.”

Margaret blinked, confusion deepening. “Then…”

Diana moved without hesitation, slipping her hand around Jack’s arm. The effect was immediate.

The entire entrance hall fell into a stunned, breathless stillness as conversations died mid-sentence. Board members turned, staff froze in place, and even the butler seemed to forget how to move.

Diana looked directly at her parents. Her voice carried clearly through the marble foyer. “No,” she said, her tone steady and unwavering. “He’s my fiancé.”

The silence that followed was not brief or uncertain; it stretched, heavy and absolute, as the weight of her declaration settled over everyone present.

Richard Sterling’s grip on his wine glass loosened. The glass tilted, and a stream of red wine spilled across the white marble floor, staining it in sharp contrast. No one reacted. No one spoke.

Every gaze shifted from Diana to the man standing beside her.

Richard stared at Jack as though trying to force reality to correct itself. After several long seconds, he finally found his voice. “…Your…” he began, his tone unsteady.

He swallowed, struggling to process what he was seeing. “…fiancé?”

She might have felt some sympathy for Jack, but sympathy was not enough to change reality.Jack calmly folded his napkin and placed it beside his plate. “I understand your concerns.”Richard looked at him, surprised. “You do?”“I would likely feel the same in your position.”The admission caught the entire table off guard.“You would?” Richard asked, narrowing his eyes.“Of course,” Jack replied evenly. “A father wants what is best for his daughter.”Richard studied him carefully, and for the first time that evening, a flicker of guilt stirred beneath his frustration. The young man was not rude, nor arrogant, nor desperate for approval. If anything, he seemed almost too reasonable.Unfortunately, reason alone could not bridge the gap between them.“I appr
