“I…” Diana paused, suddenly realizing she did not have an answer. She had been so focused on solving her inheritance problem that she had never thought to ask.

Richard noticed immediately. “You don’t know?”

Her silence confirmed it, and his disappointment deepened. “You agreed to marry someone without knowing where he works?”

At that moment, Jack stepped forward, sensing that distance was no longer necessary.

Richard turned toward him. “So… you’re Jack?”

Jack nodded respectfully. “Jack Foreman.”

Richard extended his hand. Jack accepted it without hesitation.

The handshake caught Richard’s attention. It was neither weak nor overly forceful. Instead, it was steady, controlled, and confident, the kind of handshake shared between equals.

Richard quickly dismissed the thought. “Welcome,” he said politely.

“Thank you for having me,” Jack replied.

Margaret offered a practiced smile. “We are delighted to meet the man who has captured our daughter’s heart.”

Diana nearly choked at the statement, but Jack simply inclined his head. “I’m honored.”

Richard gestured toward the dining room. “Shall we proceed to dinner?”

“Of course.”

The Sterling dining room was nothing short of magnificent. A grand crystal chandelier hung above a table large enough to seat twenty guests, casting warm light over fine china imported from England.

Silver candleholders reflected the glow, while every seat at the table was already occupied by board members, family friends, and senior executives.

The setting felt less like a family gathering and more like a corporate banquet.

Jack waited quietly until everyone else had taken their seats before choosing the only empty chair beside Diana.

Margaret noticed and leaned slightly toward her husband. “He has manners,” she admitted softly.

Richard gave a small nod. “I will give him that.”

Dinner began, and for several minutes the only sounds were the soft clinking of cutlery and low murmurs. Eventually, Richard broke the silence. “So, Jack…”

Jack looked up. “Yes, sir?”

“What line of work are you in?” he asked casually.

The question silenced the room. Conversations halted, and even the servants seemed to pause mid-step.

Jack answered without hesitation. “I work at Greenwood Holdings.”

The reaction was immediate. Richard’s fork stopped midair, and several executives looked up sharply. One board member nearly dropped his glass.

“Greenwood Holdings?” Richard repeated.

Jack nodded. “Yes.”

A murmur spread through the table. Everyone present knew the name. Greenwood Holdings was not simply successful; it was untouchable. Its elusive chairman controlled a vast empire that even billionaires struggled to access.

Richard himself had spent years attempting to secure a partnership, only to be rejected each time.

His pulse quickened. “What department?”

Before Jack could respond, Margaret spoke with a light, amused tone. “I imagine administration?”

Another guest chuckled. “No… I would say maintenance.”

Laughter rippled across the table.

Richard raised a hand slightly. “Let’s allow him to answer.”

Jack calmly set down his fork. “I help keep things running.”

Richard leaned forward, intrigued. “So you are involved in operations?”

“You could describe it that way,” he said confidently and composedly.

Margaret smiled, clearly satisfied with her conclusion. “I knew it. Cleaning operations, perhaps?”

More laughter followed, louder this time.

Jack glanced at her. There was no malice in her assumption, only certainty. He considered correcting her but chose not to.

Technically, she was not entirely wrong.

He did ensure that Greenwood Holdings remained clean—free of corruption, inefficiency, and poor leadership. The scale was simply far beyond what anyone at the table could imagine.

“You could say that,” he replied.

The room erupted again, laughter echoing beneath the chandelier.

“I like him,” one director said. “He is honest.”

“A janitor at Greenwood Holdings is still impressive,” another added with a grin.

Margaret nodded approvingly. “Exactly. Even their janitors probably earn more than managers elsewhere.”

Diana turned slightly toward Jack, expecting to see discomfort or embarrassment. Instead, he continued eating calmly, as though nothing unusual had happened.

That composure unsettled her. Most people would have rushed to defend themselves. Jack did not. He simply accepted the misunderstanding.

Richard leaned back slowly, the brief spark of hope fading from his expression. “So…” he said, folding his hands. “You work in the cleaning department?”

Jack met his gaze evenly. “I help where I’m needed.”

Richard exhaled, his disappointment now evident. “…A janitor?”

The room fell silent once more, every eye turning toward Jack.

At that exact moment, far beyond the walls of the Sterling mansion, thousands of employees across Greenwood Holdings’ global headquarters received an urgent notification.

THE CHAIRMAN’S LOCATION HAS BEEN CONFIRMED.

Meetings were abandoned. Executives rushed out of offices. Private jets were prepared as phones rang endlessly across continents.

The invisible ruler of their trillion-dollar empire had finally been found.

None of them knew that he was sitting quietly at a dining table, being mistaken for a janitor.
