The red detonator in Lord Vane's hand glowed like a tiny drop of blood in the massive reactor room.
"Step back, Maya," Lord Vane warned, his finger resting lightly over the trigger. "One wrong move from you or your brother, and this mountain becomes a smoking grave for everyone in New Oxford."
Julian gripped his rifle tightly, his heart beating fast as he stared at the old man. The air in the room was heavy with heat from the glowing blue pillars, and every second felt like a lifetime. They had fought through endless traps, hacked high-security networks, and survived betrayals, only to find themselves staring down a nuclear switch at the very end.
Beside him, Eleanor kept her hand near her belt, her eyes fixed on Lord Vane's thumb. Old Man Marrow clenched his jaw, glaring at the tyrant with pure hatred.
Only Maya did not look worried at all. She took one slow step forward, her dark eyes completely calm and steady.
"You think you hold all the power, Vane," Maya said, her voice cutting through the hum of the reactor like a knife.
Lord Vane laughed, a dry, harsh sound that bounced off the steel walls. "I am holding the switch that can turn this entire facility into dust. What could you possibly have that beats a bomb?"
"Mathematics," Maya replied simply.
Before Lord Vane could press the trigger, Maya pulled her phone out and tapped the screen twice with absolute precision.
A loud mechanical click echoed from inside the raised observation platform. The red light on Lord Vane's detonator suddenly blinked twice and turned a pale, dead gray.
Lord Vane looked down at the device in his hand, his smug smile vanishing in a single second. He pressed the trigger down hard. Nothing happened. He pressed it again, panic flashing across his cold gray eyes for the very first time.
"What is this?" Lord Vane shouted, shaking the dead detonator. "Why is it not working?"
"While you were busy giving your grand speech about five hundred years of blood, I used your local wireless relay to access the reactor's primary security loop," Maya said, her voice cold and unfeeling. "I disconnected the detonator from the main core ten seconds ago. You are holding a piece of plastic."
Lord Vane's face turned pale. He threw the dead detonator to the floor in blind fury and reached into his black robe to pull out a heavy silver pistol.
"You little trickster!" Lord Vane roared, raising the gun to fire directly at Maya.
Julian moved faster than thought. He raised his tactical rifle and pulled the trigger. A single shot cracked through the vast hall, striking Lord Vane's wrist and sending the silver pistol flying out of his hand with a sharp clatter.
The old tyrant cried out, clutching his bleeding wrist as he staggered backward against the glass railing of the observation platform.
Commander Eleanor Vance stepped forward, her face set like stone. "This is for every family your corporation destroyed during the purge," she said, her voice hard as steel.
Old Man Marrow let out a rough laugh, dropping his iron pipe to the floor because the fight was finally over. "Looks like your empire just ran out of time, Vane."
Maya walked up the metal stairs to the observation platform, stopping just a few feet away from the wounded tyrant. She looked down at him not with anger, but with the cold, detached satisfaction of someone who had finished a long, hard job.
"You stole everything from us when we were children," Maya said quietly. "You thought you could trap us in an endless loop of suffering and control. But you forgot one simple rule."
Lord Vane glared up at her through gritted teeth, blood dripping from his hand onto the metal floor. "What rule?"
"We learn faster than you," Maya said.
With a swift, practiced motion, Maya pulled out her multi-tool card and swiped it across the master control console on the platform. The glowing blue pillars around the room shifted to a bright, steady green.
On the massive main computer screens behind the platform, the legal ownership files of the Vance Financial Corporation began to update automatically, transferring every asset, deed, and account to the names of the survivors. The empire was officially gone.
Lord Vane sank to his knees, staring at the flashing green screens in absolute disbelief. His five-hundred-year reign of terror had ended not with a grand explosion, but with a few simple lines of code written by a teenage girl.
"It is over," Julian said, walking up the stairs to stand beside his sister. He looked down at the old man who had caused them so much pain, feeling a profound sense of weight lifting off his shoulders.
"Not quite yet," a sharp voice echoed from the entrance of the reactor room.
Julian, Maya, Eleanor, and Marrow spun around instantly.
Standing at the heavy steel doorway was Commander Zara Bello, but she was not alone. Behind her stood a dozen Shadow Vanguard soldiers with their rifles raised, and leading them was someone Julian and Maya had never expected to see again.
It was Viktor, the pirate captain who had tried to betray them on the cargo ship just hours before. A nasty grin stretched across his scarred face as he rested a heavy assault rifle against his shoulder.
"Did you really think a few automated turret guns could stop the Iron Syndicate that easily?" Viktor asked, stepping into the reactor room with slow, heavy steps. "You made a very nice treasure chest for us, Maya. All we had to do was wait for you to open the door."
Zara Bello stood beside Viktor, her cold blue eyes fixed on Maya with a calculating expression. "The Shadow Vanguard and the Iron Syndicate have decided to form a new partnership," Zara said smoothly. "We appreciate you doing all the hard work of taking down Lord Vane. Now, hand over the master control codes, and we might let you walk out of here alive."
Julian raised his rifle, stepping in front of Maya. "You betrayed us twice, Viktor."
"Business is business," Viktor laughed, lifting his weapon.
Before anyone could pull a trigger, the massive concrete floor beneath the reactor room began to shake violently. The green lights on the control console flickered, turned completely black, and then flashed a terrifying, warning orange.
An automated alarm began to wail through the facility, louder than anything they had heard before.
"Warning," an artificial voice echoed from the overhead speakers. "Secondary core failure detected. Self-destruct sequence active. Ten minutes to total destruction."
Lord Vane let out a wild, bloody laugh from the floor. "You fools! The manual overload cannot be stopped once the secondary core is triggered! We are all going to burn together!"
