A blinding wave of golden light swallowed the entire reactor room in less than a second, wiping away the cold metal walls and the humming blue energy pillars as if they had never existed.
Julian threw his arms up to shield his face, his boots losing contact with the floor as a strange, weightless sensation pulled him forward through a tunnel of pure brilliance. Beside him, Maya did not blink or scream. Her dark eyes remained wide and sharp, analyzing the sudden shift in reality with the cold logic that always kept her three steps ahead of disaster.
When the golden glare finally faded, the deafening alarms of the reactor were completely gone.
Julian dropped back down onto solid ground, stumbling slightly before catching his balance. He looked around in total shock. They were no longer inside the underground mountain fortress of New Oxford. Instead, they stood in the middle of a vast, open courtyard made of smooth white marble that stretched out toward an endless horizon under a pale silver sky.
Commander Eleanor Vance and Old Man Marrow materialized just a few feet away, coughing as they brushed dust off their jackets and reached instantly for their weapons.
"Where are we?" Eleanor asked, her voice sharp as she spun around, her silver dagger flashing in the pale light. "This is not New Oxford."
Old Man Marrow spat on the marble floor, gripping his iron pipe with both hands while scanning the empty horizon. "One second we are stopping a nuclear bomb, and the next we are standing in the middle of nowhere. What kind of trick is this?"
Maya walked forward, her boots clicking softly against the white marble. She looked up at the towering archway rising directly in front of them. The arch was carved from ancient stone and marked with strange, glowing symbols that pulsed with a faint, warm heartbeat.
"It is not a trick," Maya said, her voice entirely steady. "It is a gateway."
Julian stepped up beside his sister, looking at the massive archway with deep suspicion. "A gateway to where? We already broke the time loop. We destroyed Lord Vane's empire and took back everything he stole from us. Why are we here?"
Before Maya could answer, a deep, resonant voice echoed out from the archway itself, bouncing off the marble floor as if spoken by the sky itself.
"You broke the loops, little schemer," the voice boomed, rich and powerful. "You dismantled the syndicates, outsmarted the tyrants, and proved your brilliance to the core. But you only conquered one district of a much larger world."
A tall figure stepped out from the shimmering shadows of the stone arch.
It was a man wearing a long silver coat decorated with ancient seals. His hair was completely white, but his eyes burned with a fierce, youthful energy that commanded instant respect. He did not carry a weapon, yet his mere presence made the air in the courtyard feel heavy and thick.
Julian raised his rifle automatically, stepping in front of Maya. "Identify yourself. We are done playing games with local lords and faction leaders."
The white-haired man stopped a few yards away, offering a calm, knowing smile. "My name is Master Orson. I am the Keeper of the Outer Archives. And you, Julian and Maya Malakor, have just passed the final test of the lower realms."
Maya narrowed her eyes, studying the newcomer with intense calculation. She did not lower her guard, but her mind was already racing, piecing together the hidden clues they had ignored over the past year. "The lower realms? That means New Oxford was just a staging ground."
Master Orson nodded slowly, looking at Maya with clear admiration. "Indeed. For five hundred years, the elite families of New Oxford kept the lower sectors trapped in time loops and debt to harvest human potential for the upper councils. You broke free through pure grit, manipulation, and tactical genius. But by destroying Lord Vane and seizing his assets, you triggered a mandatory ascension protocol."
Eleanor stepped forward, her face dark with frustration. "Ascension? We never asked to join any higher council. We just wanted our lives back."
"Your old lives are gone," Master Orson replied smoothly. "The moment you wiped out the Vance Financial Corporation, you took ownership of their sovereign debt across three neighboring city-states. Right now, fifty rival factions, corporate dynasties, and rebel armies across the continent know that two teenagers from the slums hold the keys to their treasury."
Marrow cursed under his breath, shaking his head. "So breaking the cage just opened the door to a much bigger zoo."
"Precisely," Master Orson said. "The moment you step through that archway, you will enter the central continent. There are no local police or corrupt mayors there. Only ancient bloodlines, ruthless corporate empires, and warlords who will stop at nothing to take your new empire away from you."
Julian looked down at his hands, then turned to look at his sister. He saw no fear in Maya's eyes. Instead, a fierce, hungry light burned in her dark gaze—the exact same look she had worn before every major victory they had ever achieved.
"They want our empire?" Maya asked, a cold, confident smile touching the corners of her lips. "Let them try to take it."
Master Orson's smile widened. He stepped aside and swept his hand toward the glowing archway. "Then your new war begins now."
Without a single second of hesitation, Maya took a step forward toward the threshold of the arch. Julian caught her hand, squeezing it tightly before walking side-by-side with her into the blinding light. Eleanor and Marrow followed right behind them, their weapons ready for whatever waited on the other side.
As they crossed through the center of the archway, the white marble courtyard vanished completely, replaced instantly by the deafening roar of a massive floating metropolis suspended high above a sea of clouds. Neon towers pierced the sky, and armored airships patrolled the upper atmosphere in endless rows.
They had arrived at the center of power.
Before they could even take their first step onto the metal platform of the new city, a sharp, metallic click echoed directly behind them.
Julian spun around instantly, raising his rifle, but he was already too late.
Standing at the edge of the arrival platform, holding a heavy plasma sniper rifle aimed directly at Maya's back, was someone they thought they had left behind forever in the burning ruins of New Oxford.

Eleanor shouted over the deafening roar of the turret guns.
