Shards of heavy glass rained down across the marble floor as a second wave of black-clad commandos swarmed through the shattered windows of the penthouse.

Director Vance scrambled backward across the floor, his face white with terror as he pointed a shaking finger at Maya. "Kill them! Do not let them leave this room alive!"

Julian did not think. He stepped in front of his sister, raising his tactical rifle and firing a clean burst that forced the nearest commandos to dive behind a heavy mahogany table for cover. Beside him, Commander Eleanor Vance drew her silver dagger, slicing through a security cable to plunge the ballroom into sudden darkness.

Old Man Marrow let out a rough shout, swinging his iron pipe to shatter a crystal chandelier and drop a shower of sparkling glass onto the advancing guards.

"Stay close to me!" Julian said, grabbing Maya by the hand as red and blue laser sights crisscrossed the smoky room.

Maya did not look panicked at all. Even with dozens of elite soldiers surrounding them, her eyes were locked on the central elevator doors at the back of the penthouse. She pulled a small override device from her hoodie pocket and pressed it against her palm.

"We are not staying to fight an army," Maya said, her voice calm and steady above the gunfire. "We came to send a message, and the message has been delivered."

The private elevator doors slid open instantly, revealing a clear path down.

Julian pulled her inside just as a heavy round punched through the wall right where his head had been a second before. Eleanor and Marrow dived through the doorway right behind them, and Julian slammed his fist onto the close button.

The heavy steel doors shut with a solid thud, cutting off the deafening noise of the ballroom.

Inside the quiet elevator car, Julian let out a long breath, his chest rising and falling as the adrenaline slowly faded from his veins. He looked down at Maya, his expression tight with a mix of frustration and awe.

"You planned this whole thing just to back them into a corner in front of the entire city," Julian said, his voice dropping into a serious tone.

Maya looked back at him, her dark eyes entirely unremorseful. "If we only hit their bank accounts, Lord Vane would have hidden behind his wealth and sent others to die for him. By exposing them publicly at their own gala, we stripped away their illusion of safety. The other elite families in New Oxford saw that the Vance empire is completely empty."

Eleanor nodded in agreement, sliding her silver dagger back into her belt. "She is right. The high society families are cowards. The moment they realize the Vance vault is empty, they will turn on Lord Vane to save themselves."

Marrow crossed his arms, leaning against the metal wall of the elevator car. "And what do we do when Lord Vane decides to stop playing games and comes after us himself?"

Maya turned toward the front as the digital floor indicator ticked downward toward the ground level. A sharp, confident smile crossed her face.

"Let him come," Maya said. "We have their money, we control the underground networks, and we have each other. We are going to take back the entire city."

The elevator came to a smooth stop, and the doors slid open to reveal the quiet underground parking garage beneath the Vance Financial Tower.

Julian stepped out first, raising his rifle to scan the dark corners of the garage. It was empty except for a sleek black sports car parked near the exit ramp. The keys were sitting right on the hood, left behind by some fleeing executive.

"Looks like transportation is provided," Marrow grunted, walking over to the driver's side and picking up the keys.

Julian opened the passenger door for Maya, making sure she got inside safely before walking around to the other side. As he slid into the back seat beside Eleanor, he looked out the window at the glittering skyline of New Oxford.

The city looked different now. The floating clocks and strange magical barriers were gone, replaced by real streets, real people, and real choices. They were finally free from the time loop, but the real war for their future was only just beginning.

Marrow started the engine, and the sports car roared to life, speeding up the exit ramp and bursting out into the cool, rainy night air of the city streets.

They drove through the dark avenues for nearly twenty minutes, leaving the financial district far behind as they entered the older, industrial sector of New Oxford. The buildings here were made of dark brick and rusted iron, housing the hidden syndicate headquarters and underground trade markets that ran the darker side of the city.

Marrow pulled the car into an abandoned warehouse with broken windows and a heavy sliding metal door. He cut the engine, and the headlights flickered out, plunging them into the dim glow of streetlights shining through the roof.

"This is safe house number seven," Marrow said, turning off the ignition. "Nobody from the Vance family knows this place exists."

Julian pushed his door open and stepped out onto the concrete floor, stretching his arms. "It will do for tonight. Tomorrow, we start contacting the other syndicate bosses."

Maya hopped out of the car, walking toward a dusty metal desk in the corner of the warehouse where an old computer terminal sat waiting. She sat down, plugged her phone into the port, and started downloading the encrypted files they had stolen from the Vance tower.

Julian walked over beside her, watching the green lines of code scroll across the screen. "What are we looking for?"

"We are looking for the names of the regional syndicate leaders who were forced into signing loyalty contracts with Lord Vane," Maya said, her fingers dancing across the keyboard with fast, precise movements. "If we offer them their freedom and a share of the Vance fortune, they will switch sides by morning."

Before Julian could answer, the old computer screen suddenly flashed bright red.

The green code vanished, replaced by a single, pulsing symbol stamped across the monitor: a golden crown crossed with a silver dagger.

A synthetic voice hissed from the computer speakers, filling the quiet warehouse with a chilling sound.

*Welcome, Malakor. Welcome, little traitor. You took our money, but you forgot one important rule.*

The warehouse doors suddenly slammed shut on their own with a deafening crash, locking from the outside as heavy iron bars slid into place.

From the shadows near the back of the warehouse, a slow, heavy pair of footsteps echoed across the concrete floor.

A tall figure stepped out into the dim light, wearing a long silver coat that reflected no light at all. His pale, ageless face bore a cold, quiet smile, and his two sharp horns curved back from his forehead like a crown of bone.

Lord Vane had found them.
