The concrete wall exploded inward, raining jagged chunks of gray stone across the narrow metal platform.
Julian threw his arms up to shield his face, tumbling backward against the railing as dust filled the air. Beside him, Commander Eleanor Vance and Old Man Marrow dropped low, drawing their weapons as the deafening whine of a heavy rotary cannon ripped through the thirty-fifth floor.
Through the ruined gap in the wall, a towering elite guard stepped out of the shadows. He wore a thick, reinforced combat suit stamped with the golden crest of the Vance family, and the heavy barrels of his weapon spun with a lethal hum, pointing straight at their chests.
"End of the line, little thieves," a deep, mechanical voice echoed from behind the guard's silver face mask.
Julian gritted his teeth, feeling the hot rush of adrenaline spike through his veins. There was no time to run, and no place to hide on the narrow ledge. He raised his tactical rifle, ready to fire, but before he could squeeze the trigger, Maya stepped right past him.
She did not flinch. She did not look scared. Instead, a cold, confident smile touched her lips as she looked directly at the massive armored guard.
"You think Lord Vane sent only one guard to stop us?" Maya asked, her voice clear and steady over the whining barrels of the cannon.
The elite guard paused for a fraction of a second, his mechanical eyes narrowing behind his mask. "What are you talking about?"
"Check your tactical feed," Maya said, tapping the screen of her phone.
A bright red warning light flashed instantly across the display on the guard's wrist controller. A synthetic automated voice chimed from his suit armor: *Warning. Primary power core compromised. System shutdown initiated.*
The heavy whirring of the rotary cannon slowed down and died completely. The lights on the guard's armor flickered from blue to dead gray, and the heavy suit locked up in place, freezing him like a statue of iron and plastic.
Old Man Marrow let out a loud, rough laugh, lowering his iron pipe. "You hacked his armor while we were coming up the elevator?"
"I planted a backdoor virus in the city grid when we blew up the underground bunker," Maya replied casually, walking right up to the frozen elite guard and tapping the chest plate with her finger. "The Vance family builds great walls, but they always leave their front door unlocked for their own commanders. All I had to do was knock."
Eleanor stepped out from the shadows, shaking her head in disbelief. "You planned this step-by-step from the very beginning, didn't you?"
"If you want to beat an empire, you have to use their own tools against them," Maya said, turning her head to look at Julian. Her dark eyes softened just a little bit, holding a quiet warmth that only he ever got to see. "Come on, big brother. The penthouse gala is waiting for us."
Julian let out a breath he did not realize he was holding, a proud smile breaking across his face. He walked over to her, pushing past the frozen guard, and nodded toward the steel stairwell door at the end of the platform.
"Lead the way," Julian said.
They pushed open the heavy steel door and climbed the final flight of stairs, emerging directly through a service entrance into the grand penthouse ballroom on the top floor of the Vance Financial Tower.
The room was breathtaking, filled with glittering crystal chandeliers, shining marble floors, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows that offered a full view of the glowing night lights of New Oxford. Wealthy men in expensive black suits and elegant women in silk dresses stood around holding crystal glasses filled with champagne, laughing and talking softly to a string quartet playing classical music near the back.
Nobody noticed the four figures stepping out of the service stairwell.
Julian, Maya, Eleanor, and Marrow stood near the doorway, looking entirely out of place in their tactical gear, dark hoodies, and soot-stained jackets.
A young man in a white suit holding a glass of wine turned around, spotted them, and dropped his glass. It shattered against the marble floor with a sharp crash, instantly cutting off the music and turning every pair of eyes in the room toward the doorway.
"Who invited security?" a wealthy man near the front asked, frowning in disgust.
Maya stepped forward into the center of the ballroom, her dark hair catching the light of the crystal chandeliers. She did not look like a fugitive from an underground prison; she looked like a queen claiming her rightful throne.
She raised her phone into the air, tapping the screen to connect to the ballroom's main audio system.
Instantly, a large digital projection screen mounted above the dance floor flickered to life. It displayed the official banking records and asset ledgers of the Vance Financial Corporation, showing a bold, flashing red balance: **$0.00**.
Gasps echoed through the crowd as the wealthy elites recognized the numbers on the screen.
"What is the meaning of this?" an older man with silver hair shouted, stepping out from the crowd of guests, his face turning pale with sudden panic. It was Director Vance, one of the high council members of the city.
Maya smiled, her eyes locking onto the director with a cold, sharp intensity.
"Good evening, director," Maya said, her voice echoing clearly across the silent ballroom. "We are here to collect a five-hundred-year debt."
Director Vance stared at her, his hands shaking as he recognized the girl from the old files. "You... you broke out of the core! That is impossible!"
"Nothing is impossible when your empire is built on stolen lives," Maya shot back, taking another confident step forward. "The Vance family accounts are empty. The syndicates belong to us now. And your precious Lord Vane is about to find out what real payback looks like."
Before Director Vance could answer, the glass windows along the back wall of the penthouse suddenly shattered inward with a deafening roar.
A swarm of black-clad tactical commandos dropped down from hovering aircraft outside, their weapons raised and ready to fire, surrounding the ballroom in a tight, inescapable circle.

The Breaking Point
A white-hot plasma blast scorched the stone floor inches from Julian's boots, showering the narrow corridor with sharp rock splinters.Julian pulled the pin on his grenade and hurled it straight into the pack of advancing combat turrets. The heavy explosion rocked the underground chamber, shattering two of the machines into smoking pieces of twisted metal, but three more rolled forward from the dark wall panels to take their place.Commander Eleanor Vance fired her pistol rapidly, the bullets pinging harmlessly off the heavy armor of the oncoming machines. Old Man Marrow swung his iron pipe at a stray mechanical arm, but the sheer force of the blow rattled his tired bones and knocked him back against the wall."We are running out of time and ammo!" Eleanor shouted over the deafening roar of the turret guns.
The Council's Trap
Dozens of armed security drones flooded the metal platform within seconds, pointing heavy plasma cannons straight at Julian, Maya, Eleanor, and Marrow. The bright red targeting lights painted their faces in an eerie glow, leaving zero room for escape. High above them, the massive holographic faces of the ruling council watched from the central tower with total coldness.Julian tightened his grip on his rifle, stepping slightly in front of his sister. His muscles were already burning from the fight with Viktor, but he refused to show any sign of weakness. They had come too far and sacrificed too much to surrender now."Lower your weapons and kneel," a sharp metallic voice echoed from the nearest patrol drone. "Resistance is a capital offense in the upper realm."Eleanor d
The Final Escape
The orange warning lights flashed wildly across the reactor room as the digital timer on the main wall counted down from ten minutes.Julian kept his rifle raised, his eyes darting between Commander Zara Bello, the traitorous pirate Viktor, and the bleeding form of Lord Vane on the floor. The air grew hotter by the second, and the low, heavy rumble of the unstable core vibrated straight up through their boots."You brought us right into a suicide trap, Zara," Julian said, his voice hard and steady as he tightened his grip on his weapon.Zara did not look worried at all. She adjusted the collar of her black military coat, keeping her cold blue eyes fixed on the master control console. "Lord Vane was a fool to build this reactor on an automated thermal trigger, but the secondary core can be stopped. We just need the m
The Final Choice
The red detonator in Lord Vane's hand glowed like a tiny drop of blood in the massive reactor room."Step back, Maya," Lord Vane warned, his finger resting lightly over the trigger. "One wrong move from you or your brother, and this mountain becomes a smoking grave for everyone in New Oxford."Julian gripped his rifle tightly, his heart beating fast as he stared at the old man. The air in the room was heavy with heat from the glowing blue pillars, and every second felt like a lifetime. Beside him, Maya did not blink or scream. Her dark eyes remained wide and sharp, analyzing the sudden shift in reality with the cold logic that always kept her three steps ahead of disaster. When the golden glare finally faded, the deafening alarms of the reactor were completely gone.Julian dropped back down onto solid ground, stumbling slightly before catching his balance. He looked around in total shock. They were no longer inside the underground mountain
The Poison Trap
A thick, white gas hissed from the hidden wall vents, filling the narrow maintenance corridor with a sharp, chemical sting that immediately burned their throats.Julian coughed hard, dropping to one knee as his vision blurred at the edges. Beside him, Old Man Marrow swore loudly, slamming his fist against the sealed steel door behind them while trying to pull his jacket collar up over his nose."The door is locked tight!" Marrow shouted through heavy coughs. "We are trapped!"Commander Eleanor Vance drew her silver dagger and struck the wall panel with all her might, but the reinforced alloy did not even scratch. The air grew heavier with every second, stealing the breath from their lungs and turning their limbs weak and heavy.Only Maya remained completely still in the
