A heavy double-bladed battleaxe crashed against the stone floor with a thunderous roar, sending sharp chips of rock flying across the arena.

Julian pulled Maya back just in time as the massive blade swept past them like a spinning wheel of death. The armored guardian did not slow down, its glowing red eyes burning with absolute focus inside the dark helmet as it prepared for a second strike.

Commander Eleanor Vance raised her pistol and fired a rapid succession of bullets straight at the joints of the silver armor, but the metal plates absorbed the impact without leaving a single scratch. Old Man Marrow rushed forward, swinging his iron pipe with all his might to hit the guardian's side, but the heavy blow bounced off harmlessly, jarring the old man's arms and sending him stumbling back against the wall.

"Ordinary weapons cannot pierce that armor!" Eleanor called out, dodging a vicious backhand swipe from the giant warrior.

Maya stood near the edge of the arena, her dark eyes scanning the guardian's movements with cold precision. She did not panic, nor did she reach for a weapon. Instead, her fingers tapped rapidly against the screen of her phone, connecting to the arena's local energy network to search for a hidden weakness in the ancient runes.

"The armor is powered by an external frequency loop embedded in the stone pillars around the room," Maya said, her voice clear and steady over the sound of battle. "As long as those pillars are active, the guardian cannot be destroyed by physical force."

Julian ducked under another swinging arc of the heavy battleaxe, his muscles burning as he pivoted to face the giant warrior. "How do we break the loop?"

"Destroy the four stone pillars in the corners of the arena," Maya instructed, swiping her screen to upload a diagnostic map of the room to Julian's tactical display. "Cut the power source, and the armor's defense will drop to zero."

"I am on it!" Julian shouted.

He sprinted away from the center of the arena, ignoring the giant guardian as the armored warrior tried to pivot and block his path. The guardian swung its massive battleaxe through the air with terrifying speed, aiming to cut Julian down before he could reach the first pillar.

Old Man Marrow shouted loudly, throwing his heavy iron pipe straight at the guardian's helmet to distract it. The metal pipe struck the visor with a sharp clang, forcing the giant warrior to turn its head away for a split second.

That brief second was all Julian needed. He closed the distance, raised his tactical rifle, and fired three explosive rounds directly into the base of the first stone pillar.

The stone shattered in a massive plume of dust and flying debris, and the glowing runes carved into the surface flickered violently before going dark.

The guardian let out an angry roar, turning its glowing red eyes toward Julian, but Eleanor stepped into the path, firing a concentrated energy charge from a backup pistol she had taken from the previous gate. The charge struck the guardian's chest plate, throwing the giant warrior off balance and buying Julian more time.

Julian did not stop. He raced across the stone floor to the second pillar, primed another explosive round, and pulled the trigger. A second explosion echoed through the cavern as another set of runes went dark.

The air in the arena began to shift. The heavy hum of energy that surrounded the guardian's armor started to fade, and the glowing red eyes inside the helmet dimmed to a pale orange.

"Two more!" Maya called out, her fingers still moving across her phone as she kept track of the remaining power loops.

The guardian ignored Eleanor and Marrow completely now, enraged by the destruction of its power source. It raised the massive double-bladed battleaxe over its head and charged directly toward Julian with terrifying speed, the heavy metal boots shaking the ground with every step.

Julian sprinted toward the third pillar, but the guardian closed the distance too fast, bringing the heavy axe down in a sweeping vertical arc that threatened to split the stone floor in half.

Julian threw himself to the side, rolling hard across the rough ground as the axe blade crashed into the earth where he had been standing a second before. The shockwave knocked the wind out of his lungs, but he forced himself back up to his feet without hesitating.

He aimed his rifle at the third pillar and fired until the magazine ran completely dry. The stone cracked open in a shower of sparks, and the third set of runes winked out of existence.

With three pillars destroyed, the silver armor lost its heavy defensive glow. The guardian stumbled, its movements suddenly turning sluggish and heavy as the core lost its stability.

"Now, Julian!" Maya shouted.

Julian did not wait. He sprinted toward the final pillar in the far corner of the arena, pulled a tactical grenade from his belt, and jammed it directly into a crack in the stone. He pulled the pin and dove behind a low barrier just as the charge went off.

The final pillar exploded into a cloud of dust and rubble.

The giant guardian froze in the center of the arena. The glowing red eyes inside its helmet flickered twice and went completely dark. The massive battleaxe slipped from its metal fingers, hitting the stone floor with a heavy, final thud before the entire suit of armor collapsed into an empty pile of lifeless metal plates.

Silence returned to the arena, broken only by the heavy breathing of the group as the dust slowly settled in the air.

Marrow wiped a hand across his forehead, leaning against the wall with a relieved grin. "Well, that certainly took care of the welcome committee."

Eleanor walked over to the edge of the arena, checking her weapon before looking up at the massive stone doors ahead, which were now beginning to grind open automatically. "That was only the second gate. There are five more waiting for us."

Julian walked back to where Maya was standing, breathing heavily as he checked to make sure she was safe. "You okay?"

"I am fine," Maya replied, offering a rare, soft smile as she put her phone away. "The council underestimated how fast we adapt to their rules."

"They always underestimate us," Julian said, taking her hand as they walked together toward the newly opened exit corridor.

They stepped past the collapsed armor and moved into the dark hallway beyond, leaving the second arena behind them. The corridor was narrow and silent, lit only by a faint blue glow coming from the floor tiles beneath their boots.

After walking for several minutes, the hallway opened up into a massive underground chamber that looked entirely different from the previous trials. There were no combat turrets, no automated machines, and no armored guardians waiting in the shadows.

Instead, the center of the room held a single, transparent glass pedestal. Resting on top of the pedestal was a small, glowing black box marked with the crest of the Vance Financial Corporation.

Maya stopped in her tracks, her dark eyes narrowing as she stared at the pedestal.

"What is that?" Eleanor asked, keeping her hand near her weapon as she scanned the empty corners of the chamber.

"It is not a trap," Maya whispered, stepping forward slowly. "It is a choice."

Julian followed her closely, his eyes fixed on the black box. "What kind of choice?"

Maya reached the pedestal and looked down at the glowing crest. "This box contains the personal encrypted journals of Lord Vane, detailing every single high-ranking council member who helped him build the debt system in the lower districts. If we take it, we can expose the entire upper council."

"Then let's take it and finish them," Marrow said, stepping into the room.

Before Maya could touch the glass pedestal, a sharp, cold voice echoed from the shadows of the ceiling above them.

"If you touch that box," a woman's voice warned, "the self-destruct protocol for this entire floating sector will activate instantly, plunging millions of innocent people into the clouds below."

Julian and Eleanor whipped their weapons up, aiming toward the upper ledge, where a tall, cloaked figure stepped out from the darkness, looking down at them with a lethal smile.
