A high-voltage spark shot across the glass bridge, turning the transparent panels beneath Maya's boots into a web of blinding blue light.

Julian stepped forward, raising his rifle to block the giant combat robot that towered over the platform behind them, but the machine fired first with a deafening roar. Twin bolts of plasma energy crashed into the stone wall right next to his head, showering him with sharp rock fragments and choking dust.

"Get back, Maya!" Julian shouted, his heart pounding in his chest as he saw the electric current flare up around her feet.

Maya did not look back. Her dark eyes were fixed entirely on the complex patterns of light pulsing through the glass beneath her. She knew that one wrong step would trigger a fatal shock, but her mind remained completely calm, calculating the safety algorithms of the council's trap with cold precision.

Commander Eleanor Vance drew her silver dagger, sliding across the stone floor to fire her pistol directly into the optical sensor of the giant robot. The bullets bounced off the heavy armor plates, but the distraction forced the machine to pivot its massive plasma cannons away from the bridge and toward her.

"Old Man Marrow, help me hold this line!" Eleanor called out, dodging a blast of heat that melted the floor where she had stood a second before.

Marrow swung his heavy iron pipe with all his strength, smashing it against the robot's knee joint. The machine stumbled slightly, letting out a deep mechanical groan, but it quickly recovered and raised its heavy arms for a devastating sweeping attack.

Julian fired three fast explosive rounds into the robot's chest plating. The explosions cracked the thick metal, but the machine kept moving, its red targeting sensors locking back onto the glass bridge where Maya was currently walking.

"It is aiming at the bridge!" Julian warned, his blood running cold.

If the robot fired heavy plasma onto the glass panels while Maya was halfway across, the shockwave would shatter the entire structure and drop her into the glowing energy pit below.

Maya stopped on a safe panel, pulling her phone from her pocket. She did not panic. Instead, a sharp, confident smile touched her lips as she tapped the screen twice.

"Let it try," Maya said softly.

She connected her bypass cable directly to a hidden data node embedded in the glass railing beside her. The moment her phone linked with the bridge's local network, the flashing red and blue shock circuits beneath her feet suddenly turned a solid, peaceful green.

The high-voltage current vanished instantly.

Before the giant robot could pull the trigger on its plasma cannons, Maya swiped her screen upward. The control system of the bridge seized the robot's target lock, redirecting the machine's internal weapon systems back against itself.

The robot's own cannons whirred loudly, glowing with an intense white light. Before the automated intelligence could override the command, the machine fired two direct plasma blasts straight into its own core.

A massive explosion ripped through the giant robot's armor. Metal parts, wires, and sparks flew in every direction as the heavy machine collapsed onto the platform, crashing down in a heap of smoking rubble.

Silence rushed back into the cavern, broken only by the crackle of residual heat coming from the destroyed machine.

Julian let out a heavy breath, lowering his rifle as the overwhelming tension in his chest finally began to ease. He looked across the bridge, watching as Maya calmly stepped off the final glass panel and onto the solid stone floor on the other side.

"You always find a way to flip their own traps against them," Julian said, walking quickly across the safe glass path to join her.

"Traps are just poorly written code," Maya replied, pocketing her phone as she walked up to the second stone archway.

Eleanor and Marrow hurried across the bridge behind them, stepping onto the opposite side just as the massive steel door of the second archway began to open with a slow, heavy grind.

"That was entirely too close," Marrow grunted, wiping sweat from his forehead as he leaned his iron pipe against the stone wall. "How many more of these gates do we have to clear before we reach the vault?"

"Five more," Eleanor answered, checking her weapon as she looked down the dark corridor revealed behind the open archway. "And if the council keeps scaling up the difficulty, the next ones will not just be automated machines."

Maya stepped through the archway first, her dark gaze scanning the long, torch-lit hallway ahead. The walls were lined with old stone statues holding heavy ceremonial weapons, and the air carried the faint scent of ozone and burning oil.

"They are not just trying to kill us with machines," Maya said, her voice dropping to a low, serious tone. "They are testing our limits to see if we are strong enough to manage the continent's financial system without breaking."

Julian stepped up beside his sister, taking her hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze. They had survived New Oxford, defeated Lord Vane, and crossed the portal into the upper realm together. No matter what trials waited ahead, they would face them as one.

"Then let them test us," Julian said firmly. "We are not turning back."

They moved down the stone corridor together, their boots echoing off the walls as they pushed deeper into the heart of the trial facility. The hallway stretched on for a hundred yards before opening up into a massive, circular arena lit by flickering torches.

In the center of the arena stood a figure clad in full silver plate armor, holding a massive double-bladed battleaxe that rested against the stone floor. The armor was covered in ancient runes that glowed with a faint, dangerous light.

As soon as Julian and Maya entered the room, the armored figure raised its head. The visor lifted slightly, revealing a pair of glowing red eyes that locked onto them with pure hostility.

"Welcome, challengers," a deep, synthetic voice echoed from inside the helmet. "I am the Guardian of the Second Gate. To pass, you must defeat me in single combat."

Before Julian could step forward with his rifle, the massive stone doors behind them slammed shut with a thunderous crash, sealing the arena exits completely.

The armored guardian swung its heavy battleaxe through the air with a deafening whistle, taking a slow, heavy step toward them.
