Noah's gaze shifted to Darius, really seeing him for the first time. His eyes narrowed, studying the face, trying to place it. Then recognition dawned, and his smile widened into something genuinely delighted.

"Well, WELL! This day just keeps getting better!" Noah laughed, actually clapping his hands together. "I know you! I've seen your face before! You're... oh, this is RICH... you're Darius Kane!"

The name hung in the air like a curse.

"The last little stray dog from the Kane family!" Noah's voice rose with mocking glee. "The coward who ran away while his whole family was slaughtered like pigs! I heard rumors you survived, but I never believed it! And here you are, alive and well, standing in MY estate like you have any right!"

"Let the girl go," Darius said calmly, ignoring the provocation. "And we'll leave."

"Leave?" Noah's laughter intensified. "LEAVE? Oh no, Kane. You don't understand your situation at all. The Petterson family is A-RANKED. We're nobility of the highest order!

He stepped closer to Noah, looking down at the pathetic figure groveling on the ground. "You called me a stray dog. You called me trash. You thought I was powerless. And all the while, you had no idea you were mocking the one man in this country who could destroy you with a single phone call.""But—but we're A-ranked!" Noah's voice was desperate now. "We have connections! We have—""Had," Darius corrected. "Past tense. By morning, the Petterson name will be synonymous with criminal. Your assets will be frozen. Your businesses will be seized. Your family will be scattered to the winds."Nick Petterson finally found his voice, though it came out strangled and desperate. "You're making a mistake! The Petterson family doesn't operate alone! We have backers! Powerful families that support our operations! S-ranked families! If you move against us, they'll—""They'll what?" Darius's smile was colder than winter frost. "They'll admit to being complicit in organ trafficking? They'll reveal the

The courtyard remained frozen in stunned silence. Major General Thomas Harrison still knelt before Darius, his head bowed in respect and apology.Behind him, over a hundred elite soldiers stood at attention, weapons ready, creating an impenetrable wall of military might.Darius reached down and placed a hand on the general's shoulder. "Stand up, Douglas. You're not late. You're exactly on time."Douglas—Thomas Harrison's given name, used only by those who'd earned the right—rose to his feet, relief washing over his features. "Thank you, War God. When I received your call, I mobilized every available unit. I commandeered military transport, bypassed every protocol—""I know," Darius said quietly. "And I appreciate it."Chief Marcus Davidson suddenly made sense to everyone watching. His earlier confidence, his defiance of Nick Petterson's political pressure—it all clicked into place now."Chief Davidson," Douglas addressed him formally, "I apologize for the urgency of my orders. When th

  • Chapter 34: WAR GOD

The officers looked between Nick, Raymond, and Marcus—three sources of authority all saying different things. Several of them began raising their weapons again, deciding that the councilman's power outweighed the chief's orders.Marcus opened his mouth to countermand the order, to explain about the federal warrants, to somehow salvage the situation—Then the sound of heavy vehicles rumbling through the estate gates made everyone freeze. Not police cars. Not civilian vehicles.Military transport trucks. At least five of them, their engines growling like caged beasts. They screeched to a halt just outside the courtyard, and before anyone could react, soldiers began pouring out—not a dozen, not twenty, but what looked like an entire company of fully armed military personnel. They moved with the precision of elite units, forming defensive positions with practiced efficiency. Every soldier was in full combat gear, carrying assault rifles, wearing body armor. These weren't National Guard re

The police officers had just begun lowering their weapons when a new voice rang out from the estate's entrance—confident, commanding, and dripping with political authority."What in God's name is going on here?"Every head turned.A man strode into the courtyard with the bearing of someone who'd spent decades wielding power. He was perhaps sixty, silver-haired, impeccably dressed in a tailored suit despite the late hour. Everything about him screamed influence and connections.Nicholas Petterson—Nick to those who knew him—Noah's uncle and one of Duskfort's most powerful city councilmen. He'd served three terms, had connections spanning the entire state government, and was widely considered untouchable.Noah's face transformed instantly from barely concealed panic to triumphant relief. "Uncle Nick! Thank God you're here! These criminals broke into our estate and—""I can see what happened," Nick interrupted, his eyes sweeping across the scene with cold assessment. He fixed Chief Marcus

The new voice cut through the courtyard like a thunderclap—loud, authoritative, and absolutely furious.Every head turned toward the entrance. A man strode into the courtyard with the bearing of someone who commanded absolute authority. He was perhaps fifty-five, gray-haired, wearing a police uniform with insignia that made Raymond Miller's rank look insignificant.Chief Marcus Davidson. Head of the entire Duskfort Police Department.Raymond's face went white as fresh snow. "C-Chief Davidson? What are you doing here? I thought you were in the capital for—""What am I DOING here?" Marcus's voice rose to a roar. "I'm here because I got an emergency call about my deputy chief orchestrating an illegal arrest on behalf of a family under federal investigation!""Federal investigation?" Noah's confident smile faltered slightly. "I don't know what you're talking about. There's no—""SHUT UP!" Marcus rounded on him with barely contained fury. • Chapter 31: The Chief Arrives

Darius lowered his phone slowly, his eyes never leaving Raymond Miller's face. When he spoke, his voice was quiet but carried the weight of absolute certainty."Deputy Chief Miller, you just heard Noah Petterson openly admit to organ trafficking. To purchasing human beings for the purpose of harvesting their organs. To being complicit in the murder of members of my family. And you're telling me you heard nothing?"Raymond's expression didn't flicker. "I heard a lot of wild accusations from an intruder who violently broke into private property. As for jurisdiction, organ transplant procedures are handled by federal medical boards, not local police. If there were any irregularities—which I'm not saying there are—it would need to be reported through proper channels.""Proper channels," Darius repeated, his voice taking on an edge like broken glass. "The same proper channels that you control? The same system you've corrupted?""Careful, Mr. Kane," Raymond warned. "Adding slander of a poli
