Amelia's frown deepened even more as she learned of Axel's identity. This woman held a status that was far more significant than hers. In fact, at a table where such kinds of people were seated, she could only wish but might never be able to sit there.
This made her green with envy, and the discomfort in her heart couldn’t be shaken. What was worse, right after she dumped this good-for-nothing husband of hers, he was able to bag such an exquisite lady, who was far better than her.
This made her feel inferior. She was supposed to be able to keep looking down at him, but in the face of Axel, it felt like she was supposed to hide her face away.
Well, soon, she would realize Ethan's true colors and dump him too. She was sure of it. As the realization dawned on her, she found her face and ego again, and a prideful look settled back on her face.
However, she noticed how Logan kept staring at Axel, and unable to stomach it, she pulled him over to the direction of the entrance quickly.
“Let’s go in. The event is about to start.”
“Ooh, okay.” Logan was contemplating whether he should use the opportunity to build a connection with Axel, but on second thought, he didn’t think it was a good idea. Not when this loser was here and might sabotage everything.
Today, he was going to prove himself in the event and show how awesome he was, unlike some people. As the thought crossed his mind, his pride grew to greater heights.
Shortly after they walked into the hall, Ethan looked at Axel. Both of them had a lot to talk about regarding her actions, but with people around, it wouldn’t be a good idea.
“Can we go inside too, babe?” She smiled at him sweetly. It seems like she was enjoying this.
Ethan shook his head and smiled before they both walked hand in hand into the hall. This was the first time he had been so close to a woman, and though it felt new and awkward in some way, he knew he had to put up with it.
Meanwhile, Logan and Amelia were already surrounded by so many people in the hall; most of them were from smaller families, some were owners of newly established businesses, while some were there mainly to make connections, so at once they began to shoot their shots.
“Mr. Logan Hale, are you attending the auction too? I am so sure that I can’t compete with you on any item here. Hahaha.”
“Mr. Logan is the heir to a Star Crest company that is worth billions of dollars. He is already wonderful and in a different league from us. That’s already too impressive.”
“And let’s not forget that he had made so many contributions to it. We have heard the news. It’s been updated on the company’s I*******m page and other platforms every time.”
“Really? Mr. Logan is really so awesome.”
“That’s right. He is so awesome and very handsome too.”
Though Logan hadn’t said a word since he came, he seemed to have taken the spotlight already. Everyone kept raining compliments on him, making him bask in their admiration with great pride.
As for Amelia, she was very much impressed too, as after all, it seemed the crowd was looking up at them. It made her wrap her hand around him so possessively to make everyone know that they were a couple if at all they were forgetting that.
“And let’s not forget Miss Amelia here. She is such a great beauty and a perfect match for Mr. Logan. They will make a fine couple.”
“That’s right. Just look at how beautiful they look together.”
“And please keep in mind that Mr. Amelia has recently become a CEO too. Isn’t that so impressive? This is the definition of beauty with brains.”
“Ooh, how I wish I were like them.”
Smiles were on everyone’s faces as they complimented them even more just to get into their good books, Logan most especially.“
“Mr. Logan, do you know that a rare item will be auctioned off today?” Just then a man stepped up to speak. His name was Mr. Ben, and ever since he had been meaning to form a partnership with Star Crest Corporation.
If he could get Mr. Logan to notice him more, then he could get a chance.
Logan turned in his direction with a serious look to listen to what he had to say.
“Go on.” He waved at him.
“There is a rare vintage ring from Mr. Orion Asher's private collection. We all know that he is the president of the largest business association and the event host. You know what this means? This item will not just be of high quality, but it might hold some high significance, which I will have to recommend to someone of your caliber. Unlike us, you deserve to have such a ring, sir, and even if the price might be staggering, I’m sure it doesn’t matter to you.”
Mr. Ben carefully explained, and at once Logan’s interest was piqued. Not only did he become invested in the item, but getting to attract Mr. Orion’s attention would be a good deal too.
“That’s nice. That ring is mine.” Logan declared at once, making everyone's eyes spark as they knew he wasn’t just blowing airs. His family was so wealthy, and since he was an heir, it would be easy-peasy for him.
“Hmp, the ring is yours? How sure are you about that?” Just then Axel spoke, attracting attention towards not just her but also Ethan.
Ethan was already amused that this man had not only taken his wife but also wanted the ring he wanted. What a coincidence!
However, he didn’t expect Axel to speak and suddenly attract all their attention towards them.
“What do you mean?” Logan frowned, feeling offended by her words.
Axel chuckled before replying. “You should stop blowing airs. If Ethan here wants, he could buy the whole auction hall, including the items altogether.”
“Huh? What?”
The hall became silent at once, as no one expected her to say such a thing. Shortly, a rain of laughter then filled the room.
Everyone began pointing at Ethan as they laughed so hard until their stomachs hurt and even had to hold on to something for support. Even Amelia and Logan weren’t exempt from this.
News had already spread out that not only was he dumped by Amelia, but he was utterly useless too, and was working in a trash bar. How could someone like him put up a front and think he could even buy a thing here?
It was already so lucky that he was able to get in here, but that was because of Axel's influence. Yet, it seemed he might have tricked her into believing he was some big shot. That was so pathetic.
“This punk really thinks he has money or what?”
“Look how broke and wretched he looks. A man who was dumped by his wife thinks he can do any better here? It’s so disgraceful.”
“Damn it, the sight of him makes me want to puke.”
While all this was going on, Ethan remained unbothered. He didn’t care about their mocking words when he parted his lips and declared.
“I am not interested in buying the whole auction hall or other items but just the vintage ring.”

This isn't romance
Axel was still doing the math in her head when she realized that it was going to cost him a lot to acquire the back, not to mention the fact that they had no real reason to sell off the company. The bank had been so optimized that they had barely ever made any losses in the past half decade, so convincing them to sell would be next to impossible. It would involve probably a double payment of what the company is worth. The scale of the cost of such a decision was heavy, and it hit Axel like a delayed shockwave. For a moment, just a brief moment, her mind betrayed her. A thought slipped into her head uninvited, but it felt dangerously warm to think of, and she couldn’t stop the thought.‘Does that mean I matter that much to him?’ she thought to herself as a warm smile began to form on her face.Ava caught the shift with the side of her eyes instantly and scoffed.“Don’t read into it,” she said firmly. “This isn’t romantic.”Axel flushed. “I didn’t…”“You did,” Ava cut in, not giving Ax
Beautiful eyes
“Master Ethan,” Ava cleared her throat at the first chance she got, so she could remind him of the need to return home without interrupting their conversation in a disrespectful manner.“What is it?” Ethan raised his head to her.“You have work to get back to tomorrow sir,” Ava said.“You should consider rounding up here so you can be well rested for tomorrow’s activities, sir.”She didn’t want to have to use this sentence, because she didn’t want him going back to the office, at least, not for another week. With her statement just now, she had basically given him ammo to use against her when she suggested he should stay home for a while to let things cool off.But it was either that or she would be unable to get the information she wanted on the shoot out from him.Ethan looked at Axel for a moment then nodded.“I will have to leave now, Ava is right,” he said as he got up.“Thank you for taking out time to check in on me, I really appreciate it… Ethan,” she paused before saying his
beyond all odds
When she finished, silence settled between them again for a moment before Ethan finally cleared his throat and spoke.“I can intervene,” he said with a low but audible tone.Axel looked at him at the point like she was confused, trying to figure out where his response was coming from.Ethan sat up in his spot on the couch and spoke a little clearly.“I can intervene with whatever is going on at your place of work… if you want me to, of course,” he added that last part to assure her that there was no pressure.Axel looked up at Ava that was already looking at them at this point, still at the window, and Ethan gently held her cheek, softly directing her eyes back to him.“Don’t worry about Ava, you don’t need her permission for this,” Ethan said, knowing that if Ava gave Axel a single look, Axel will lose every inclination to say yes, so he pulled her eyes down to his to make sure her decision here was her decision fully.“No!” Axel shook her head immediately, removing his hand from her
Tell me about today
“Oh for God’s sake,” Ava was already getting pissed.“Step aside,” she said and pushed past Axel, forcing her way into the house before gesturing for Ethan to walk in.Ethan walked into the house with Ava following behind him immediately, leaving Axel at the door for a moment before she quickly tried to recover from her thoughts and shut the door. She shut the door and turned to watch her guests. She caught herself watching just Ethan though, but she didn’t stop herself. She managed to convince herself that it was fine because she had spent more time seeing Ava than she saw Ethan since she came to his home. She knew that that was a lie, but she held on to that lie and just kept watching him.He looked different from the last time she’d seen him, which was just earlier today, but so much had happened with her today that it felt like it had been a while since she last saw him. He looked quieter now, and from the way he had spoken to her at the door a moment ago, he was a lot less sharp
Self-sabotage
Axel stood in the middle of her new apartment, clad in grey pajamas as she tried hard to convince herself it felt like home.It didn’t.Ava had gone out of her way to fix the place up before she closed from work for the day.The place was clean, modern, and thoughtfully arranged, but that was just about it, nothing about it felt unique to her, or to anyone, it was all just plain and bland. At least, while at the Villa, even if it also didn’t feel like it was home, a lot of things there felt personal, like there were stories behind them. Here though, there was literally nothing. The place had neutral walls, minimal furniture, lights that were bright enough to erase shadows but she was not feeling any comforting warmth from them.Nothing here bore her imprint yet, and there was still the fact that it was all temporary, so… she couldn’t even hope to create any memories or personalize anything in here.Everything was temporary. That was the word that kept circling in her head, temporary.
Abandoned
The answers Ava was giving were immediate and unapologetic. It was probably the first time he could remember that she had talked to him for so long without calling him Master Ethan or any of the titles he usually would have had to repeatedly remind her not to use.For a brief moment, it made him worried that she might be seeing him in a different light, but he eventually pushed the thought aside.Ava was too loyal to let an incident like that redefine how she saw him. After a while, the conversation drifted back to Axel without friction this time.Ethan was a lot more relaxed talking about it now, and even though he knew that Ava had her personal bias towards Axel, the tension that had earlier sharpened every word was now absent.Ava explained again, but now with detail instead of rushing through it like it was some insignificant event.“Alexander Cole isn’t targeting her,” she said. “I mean, he does want her back, but not as much as he wants to lay his hands on you.”“His target is y
