Does this punk have a death wish or what? Everyone looked at him only to find a smug expression on his face. Did he perhaps think that this place was a roadside stall where he could get some cheap goods and flaunt his stupidity, or what?
Logan was more provoked than anyone else. Does this man know when not to step on his nerve, or does he not like the fact that he still has teeth in his mouth? Does he want to lose them or what?
“Let’s see how you’ll take the ring from me,” Logan said with a threatening tone as he sternly stared at Ethan.
Whereas, the guests already knew Ehan was broke and could afford nothing. By the time the main event commenced, they would see where he was going to hide his face. Everyone saw him as an eyesore and they began to gossip about him.
“Hello ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats as the auction is about to start immediately.”
However, just then, a man in a suit walked up to the main stage holding a mic as he addressed the crowd. He was the auctioneer/MC of the event.
As soon as everyone saw him, they knew the big event was about to start, so they moved on to take their seats at the tables quickly.
Shortly, several scrumptious meals and drinks were served to lighten the mood before the MC continued.
“Once again, let me welcome you all to such a great event. As you all know, our biggest host is none other than Mr. Orion Asher. Most of us have heard of him and surely know that these items are very genuine and of high quality.”
“Thank you all for attending; I shall now begin.”
The MC continued politely before he went on to list out the items for bidding.
“First, may I present to you the queen of hearts. A limited edition. Only five of these pieces are being produced yearly due to how hard they are to craft and the materials they require.”
As he said this, the crowd's eyes had already sparkled. Such a piece was known by everyone, and since they had seen it on the list of items, they were very expectant of it.
“The minimum bidding price is three million, while the maximum price is eight million. Gentlemen, can we begin?” He announced.
“Three point five million!”
At once someone yelled among the crowd.
“Three point seven million!” Another yelled, beating the former's price, and it suddenly became a competition.
As for Ethan, he didn’t bother about such items, as that wasn’t what he was after. He sat down at his table and was eating gently with Axel. Both of them kept discussing it as though they didn’t even attend the event to participate in the auction.
On the other hand, to show off, Logan stood up and bid on so many items just so he could give them to Amelia. So many people were jealous of this, but he didn’t mind.
However, as for Amelia, though she was supposed to be basking in pride and happiness, she was occasionally distracted by how relaxed Ethan was as he sat down there discussing with Axel, thoroughly ignoring her like she didn’t exist.
This made her increasingly uncomfortable, and she wished she could just go there and crash everything on them, but it didn’t look like it was a good time yet.
Logan also looked over and noticed Ethan wasn’t bidding on any item; he concluded that he had no money and was just using Axel's identity to show off.
“Tch! So disgusting. Leaching off a woman? That’s something I can never do!” He said in disgust before looking away.
“May I introduce you to one of our finest items, the vintage ring?” The MC suddenly said, and at once, a display glass was pushed into the venue for everyone to see.
It immediately stirred up a commotion as everyone's eyes became fixed on it. Even Ethan wasn’t exempt, as by merely looking at it alone, he could feel a deep connection to it. In fact, he swore in his heart that he was going to get it at all costs.
After a few details of the item were given, the MC then went on to give the bidding price.
“The minimum price of this item is a hundred million, and the maximum is a hundred and fifty million.”
Everyone gasped as they didn’t expect the price to be so high. So many guests who had their eyes on it began to withdraw, as such an amount was too much for them to spend. Even their annual income wasn’t up to such an amount, so they couldn’t risk using such a sum to buy a ring that might be of no use to them.
Deciding to stir up the tension since the hall was quiet and to impress Amelia, Logan stood up. The fact that Ethan still hadn’t stood up meant he was only making empty promises earlier. Now this item was going to be his.
“One hundred and sixty million.” He yelled his price so high, even above the maximum price, causing multiple gasps to fly out of almost everyone’s mouth.
While they were busy thinking of the hefty price, this man stood up and bid so high, like money meant nothing to him. Well, that was expected from the heir to the Star Crest Company. He was just too rich.
Who could dare outbid this man? No one! As silence reigned, Logan was sure that the item was now under his grasp. He became more proud and even looked towards Axel so she would see he wasn’t like Ethan, who was leeching off a woman and couldn’t even keep to his words.
However, everything crashed as a voice suddenly boomed in the hall.
“Two hundred million dollars!"

This isn't romance
Axel was still doing the math in her head when she realized that it was going to cost him a lot to acquire the back, not to mention the fact that they had no real reason to sell off the company. The bank had been so optimized that they had barely ever made any losses in the past half decade, so convincing them to sell would be next to impossible. It would involve probably a double payment of what the company is worth. The scale of the cost of such a decision was heavy, and it hit Axel like a delayed shockwave. For a moment, just a brief moment, her mind betrayed her. A thought slipped into her head uninvited, but it felt dangerously warm to think of, and she couldn’t stop the thought.‘Does that mean I matter that much to him?’ she thought to herself as a warm smile began to form on her face.Ava caught the shift with the side of her eyes instantly and scoffed.“Don’t read into it,” she said firmly. “This isn’t romantic.”Axel flushed. “I didn’t…”“You did,” Ava cut in, not giving Ax
Beautiful eyes
“Master Ethan,” Ava cleared her throat at the first chance she got, so she could remind him of the need to return home without interrupting their conversation in a disrespectful manner.“What is it?” Ethan raised his head to her.“You have work to get back to tomorrow sir,” Ava said.“You should consider rounding up here so you can be well rested for tomorrow’s activities, sir.”She didn’t want to have to use this sentence, because she didn’t want him going back to the office, at least, not for another week. With her statement just now, she had basically given him ammo to use against her when she suggested he should stay home for a while to let things cool off.But it was either that or she would be unable to get the information she wanted on the shoot out from him.Ethan looked at Axel for a moment then nodded.“I will have to leave now, Ava is right,” he said as he got up.“Thank you for taking out time to check in on me, I really appreciate it… Ethan,” she paused before saying his
beyond all odds
When she finished, silence settled between them again for a moment before Ethan finally cleared his throat and spoke.“I can intervene,” he said with a low but audible tone.Axel looked at him at the point like she was confused, trying to figure out where his response was coming from.Ethan sat up in his spot on the couch and spoke a little clearly.“I can intervene with whatever is going on at your place of work… if you want me to, of course,” he added that last part to assure her that there was no pressure.Axel looked up at Ava that was already looking at them at this point, still at the window, and Ethan gently held her cheek, softly directing her eyes back to him.“Don’t worry about Ava, you don’t need her permission for this,” Ethan said, knowing that if Ava gave Axel a single look, Axel will lose every inclination to say yes, so he pulled her eyes down to his to make sure her decision here was her decision fully.“No!” Axel shook her head immediately, removing his hand from her
Tell me about today
“Oh for God’s sake,” Ava was already getting pissed.“Step aside,” she said and pushed past Axel, forcing her way into the house before gesturing for Ethan to walk in.Ethan walked into the house with Ava following behind him immediately, leaving Axel at the door for a moment before she quickly tried to recover from her thoughts and shut the door. She shut the door and turned to watch her guests. She caught herself watching just Ethan though, but she didn’t stop herself. She managed to convince herself that it was fine because she had spent more time seeing Ava than she saw Ethan since she came to his home. She knew that that was a lie, but she held on to that lie and just kept watching him.He looked different from the last time she’d seen him, which was just earlier today, but so much had happened with her today that it felt like it had been a while since she last saw him. He looked quieter now, and from the way he had spoken to her at the door a moment ago, he was a lot less sharp
Self-sabotage
Axel stood in the middle of her new apartment, clad in grey pajamas as she tried hard to convince herself it felt like home.It didn’t.Ava had gone out of her way to fix the place up before she closed from work for the day.The place was clean, modern, and thoughtfully arranged, but that was just about it, nothing about it felt unique to her, or to anyone, it was all just plain and bland. At least, while at the Villa, even if it also didn’t feel like it was home, a lot of things there felt personal, like there were stories behind them. Here though, there was literally nothing. The place had neutral walls, minimal furniture, lights that were bright enough to erase shadows but she was not feeling any comforting warmth from them.Nothing here bore her imprint yet, and there was still the fact that it was all temporary, so… she couldn’t even hope to create any memories or personalize anything in here.Everything was temporary. That was the word that kept circling in her head, temporary.
Abandoned
The answers Ava was giving were immediate and unapologetic. It was probably the first time he could remember that she had talked to him for so long without calling him Master Ethan or any of the titles he usually would have had to repeatedly remind her not to use.For a brief moment, it made him worried that she might be seeing him in a different light, but he eventually pushed the thought aside.Ava was too loyal to let an incident like that redefine how she saw him. After a while, the conversation drifted back to Axel without friction this time.Ethan was a lot more relaxed talking about it now, and even though he knew that Ava had her personal bias towards Axel, the tension that had earlier sharpened every word was now absent.Ava explained again, but now with detail instead of rushing through it like it was some insignificant event.“Alexander Cole isn’t targeting her,” she said. “I mean, he does want her back, but not as much as he wants to lay his hands on you.”“His target is y
