The moment the ancient voice spoke, Vaelor attacked. There was no hesitation, no warning, no attempt at negotiation. The archmage thrust his staff forward, and a torrent of golden power erupted across the chamber. Entire mountains could have been erased by the spell. Ancient runes blazed into existence across the air. Reality folded inward.

The force struck the opening gate with enough power to split continents. James barely managed to shield his eyes. The explosion illuminated the vast chamber. Golden light swallowed everything. The resulting shockwave shattered crystal pillars and tore chunks from the surrounding walls. Yet when the brilliance finally faded...the gate remained untouched. A terrible silence settled over the chamber.

The attack had accomplished nothing. Not because it failed to connect. Not because it had been blocked. The spell had simply ceased to exist the moment it touched the opening gate. As though reality itself had erased it. James slowly lowered his arm. His pulse thundered. Nobody spoke. Nobody seemed capable of speaking. Even the silver-eyed stranger looked disturbed.

Then the ancient voice returned. Unlike before, there was no anger within it. No hostility. Only disappointment."You remain predictable, Vaelor."The words echoed through the chamber. The voice sounded neither male nor female. Neither young nor old. It felt ancient beyond measurement. As though countless voices were speaking simultaneously. Vaelor's expression hardened. His grip tightened around his staff.

"You should not be awake."The massive gate continued opening. A fraction wider.A fraction closer. The ancient voice answered immediately."I was never asleep."

Those words sent chills through James. The statement sounded simple. Yet something about it felt deeply significant. The silver-eyed stranger suddenly stepped forward. His usual confidence had vanished entirely. For the first time since James met him, genuine caution appeared in his eyes."That's impossible."The voice laughed softly. A strangely human laugh."Many things are impossible."

The gate widened further. Golden mist flowed through the opening. The chamber temperature dropped noticeably. James felt goosebumps spread across his skin. The sensation reminded him of standing before an approaching storm. Something enormous waited beyond that doorway. Something capable of making even Vaelor nervous.

Then the ancestral voices inside James's bloodline suddenly erupted. Unlike previous awakenings, these voices carried terror. Thousands of whispers flooded his mind.Warnings.Panic. Fear. The sheer intensity nearly dropped him to his knees. Fragments of speech flashed through his consciousness.

"Do not enter."The gate must remain closed."He cannot remember."Not yet."Too early."

The flood became overwhelming. James grabbed his head. Pain exploded behind his eyes. The world blurred. Images surfaced.Memories.Not his own.A battlefield beneath shattered stars. An army kneeling before the First Gate. Ancient heroes arguing among themselves. A silver-haired warrior stood before the enormous doorway.

Then another figure emerged from the gate. A tall individual wrapped in black robes. The heroes immediately drew weapons. Yet the stranger simply smiled. And spoke words that echoed across the memory.

"You are building your prison incorrectly."

The vision shattered. James gasped. His knees hit the ground. The pain faded almost immediately. Yet the memory remained.Clear.Sharp.Disturbing.Something about it felt important. Before he could fully process it, Lyra knelt beside him."What happened?"James hesitated.

The memory felt fragmented.Incomplete.Yet he shared what he saw. As he spoke, expressions around him gradually changed. Vaelor looked troubled. The silver-eyed stranger looked alarmed. Darius looked confused. Only one reaction truly stood out. The shadow creature. The chained entity began laughing. At first, the sound was quiet. Then louder. And louder.Until the entire chamber echoed with its amusement.

"You still don't understand."Its crimson eyes gleamed."The funniest part is that none of you understands."Vaelor turned sharply."What do you mean?"

The creature's smile widened."The gate."Its gaze shifted toward the enormous doorway."You assume something is imprisoned behind it."Nobody answered. Because that assumption seemed obvious.Natural.Reasonable.The creature laughed again. Then it delivered another impossible statement."There is nothing behind the gate.

"The chamber fell still. James frowned. That made no sense. Everyone could feel a presence beyond the doorway. An enormous presence.Ancient.Powerful.Watching.The creature noticed their disbelief. Its smile became almost sympathetic."There is nothing behind the gate."Its crimson eyes narrowed."Because the gate itself is the prison."

Those words struck the group like a physical blow. James stared. His thoughts immediately raced. Was the prison the gate? Not the chamber behind it?Not the forgotten god?The gate itself? The concept felt absurd. Yet after everything else he had learned, absurdity no longer guaranteed falsehood. The ancient voice beyond the doorway chuckled softly.

"It always reaches that conclusion faster than the others."The shadow creature bowed dramatically."One must excel at something."The exchange unsettled James. They knew each other. Not casually. Not indirectly.Personally.The realisation deepened the mystery. Before anyone could question further, another tremor shook the mountain. This one felt far stronger. Much closer. A deep rumbling echoed through the chamber.

Then came distant screams. Human screams. James froze. The sounds came from above. The sanctuary. The battle. The Hollow Legion had broken through. Vaelor immediately sensed it. His expression darkened."The outer defences have fallen."Nobody needed clarification. The situation had just become exponentially worse.

The enemy was inside. James instinctively looked upward, as though he could somehow see through miles of stone. His chest tightened. People were dying.Again.The feeling brought back painful memories. His family. His home. The massacre. The helplessness returned immediately. And he hated it. More than anything, he hated feeling powerless.

The emotion burned inside him. Growing stronger.Growing sharper. For the first time since awakening the bloodline, James felt something new within himself. Not memories. Not voices.Power.Raw power.Ancient power. The sensation flowed through his veins like liquid fire. Every heartbeat intensified it. The ancestral voices reacted instantly.

The whispers became louder.Urgent.Demanding.As though thousands of ancestors suddenly focused upon a single objective.James.The chamber blurred. Another memory surfaced. This one felt different. More deliberate.Less like a fragment. Someone was showing him something. A young woman appeared before him. Golden armour.Silver eyes.A crown forged from crystal. She stood atop a tower overlooking a city larger than any kingdom James had ever imagined.

The woman smiled sadly."If you're seeing this memory..."Her voice carried exhaustion."...then the seals are already failing."James recognised her immediately. Not personally.Instinctively.She belonged to the bloodline. One of the heirs.Perhaps one of the most important. The woman continued.

"The bloodline was never created to protect the prison."James froze. The statement contradicted everything.Again.Every answer seemed to destroy another truth. The woman looked toward the horizon. A shadow crossed her face."We created the bloodline to protect the jailer. The memory shattered. James stumbled backwards. His breathing became uneven.

The jailer. Not the prisoner. The jailer. The distinction mattered.Deeply.Before he could explain what he saw, the ancient voice beyond the gate spoke again. This time directly to him."Your ancestors were clever."James looked up. The gate had opened wider. Much wider. Golden mist drifted through the chamber.

The presence beyond felt closer now. Almost tangible. The voice continued."But they made one mistake."James swallowed."What mistake?"The answer came immediately."They believed truth could remain buried forever."

The statement lingered heavily. Before James could respond, an explosion erupted from the far side of the chamber. Everyone spun around. A wall collapsed. Stone and crystal flew outward. Dust filled the air. Through the destruction emerged black-armored soldiers. The Hollow Legion. They had somehow reached the Core Vault.

The sight stunned everyone. Dozens poured through the breach. Then hundreds. And at their centre walked the commander carrying the black crystal spear. The same man who destroyed James's life. The same man who hunted him across worlds. The commander stepped into the chamber. His calm gaze immediately swept across the scene.

The gate.Vaelor.The shadow creature.James.Then something unexpected happened. The commander's expression changed. Not toward James.Toward the gate. For the first time, genuine fear appeared in his eyes.Fear.Pure fear. The revelation shocked James more than anything. This man had massacred entire bloodlines without hesitation. He had stared down Vaelor.Led armies.Destroyed kingdoms. Yet the sight of the opening gate frightened him.

The commander lowered his spear.Slowly.Deliberately.Then he spoke. His voice carried none of his previous arrogance. Only urgency."Close it."Nobody moved. The commander took another step forward."Close the gate."Vaelor frowned."You know what it is."

The commander laughed bitterly. The sound carried no humour."Of course I know."His gaze never left the widening doorway."My order has guarded it for centuries."The chamber fell silent. James felt his pulse quicken. Guarded it? The commander continued.

"The Hollow Legion was never created to hunt your bloodline."He looked directly at James."It was created to protect it."

The words struck harder than any weapon. James stared. His thoughts stalled. Nothing made sense anymore. Absolutely nothing. The commander noticed his confusion. His expression softened slightly."The truth is uglier than you imagine."

The black crystal spear lowered completely. For the first time since meeting him, the commander did not appear as an enemy. He appeared exhausted.Burdened.Like a man carrying impossible responsibilities. Then the ancient voice laughed. A deep, resonant laugh that shook the mountain.

The gate opened another fraction. Golden light flooded the chamber. The voice sounded amused."At last."Everyone turned toward the doorway. Something was emerging. Not physically.Conceptually.Reality itself seemed to bend around the opening.

The space beyond no longer resembled a chamber. Or a prison.Or even a place. James struggled to comprehend what he was seeing.Stars.Entire galaxies.Infinite darkness. Countless worlds drifting within a vast cosmic ocean. The sight transcended understanding.

Then he saw them.Eyes.Thousands of eyes.Watching from beyond existence.Watching from beyond reality.Watching through the gate. Every eye focused on a single person.James.The commander immediately shouted."LOOK AWAY!"But it was too late. One of the eyes blinked. And the moment it did...

James remembered something he was never supposed to know. Something buried deeper than history.Something hidden even from the Echo Bloodline.A truth so terrible that every ancestor had tried to erase it. And as the forbidden memory began awakening inside him...the first crack appeared in the foundation of reality itself.

  • Chapter 5: The Vault Beneath the Mountain

The third explosion nearly tore the sanctuary apart. Ancient stone cracked beneath James's feet as a violent tremor surged through the mountain. The platform shook hard enough to throw several mages from their positions, and somewhere below, deep within the hidden foundations of the Sanctuary of Echoes, another section of the ancient structure collapsed.Dust and fragments of glowing crystal erupted from fissures in the ground. For a brief moment, nobody spoke. The threat outside remained terrifying. Thousands of Hollow Legion soldiers were advancing toward the sanctuary's weakening barriers. The commander with the black crystal spear stood at the front of that army like a harbinger of ruin. Yet despite that overwhelming danger, every person on the platform instinctively understood one horrifying truth. Whatever had entered the mountain was worse.
