Chapter 1: The Night the Bloodline Died

The first scream came before the fire. It tore through the quiet mountain valley like a blade through flesh, shattering the peaceful silence that had protected the Aurelian Estate for generations. James Aurelian froze. The wooden training sword slipped slightly in his grasp as he turned toward the distant village square.

For a brief moment, he thought he had imagined it. The evening had been calm. The sky glowed with the fading colours of sunset, and the cool mountain wind carried the scent of pine trees across the valley. Then a second scream followed. This one lasted longer. And then another. And another. Panic erupted beyond the estate walls.

The sixteen-year-old's heartbeat immediately quickened. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong."Father?"James turned toward the stone courtyard where his father stood near the fountain. Unlike the frightened servants rushing toward the main building, Alaric Aurelian remained perfectly still. The sight alone sent a chill down James's spine.

His father was never afraid. Yet at that moment, fear filled the older man's eyes. Not ordinary fear. The kind of fear that appeared only when someone saw death approaching and knew there was no escape. Alaric slowly lifted his gaze toward the darkening horizon. The colour drained from his face."They found us."

James frowned."What do you mean?"His father did not answer immediately. The silence felt heavier than any response. When Alaric finally spoke, his voice sounded distant."I prayed this day would never come."

An explosion shook the valley. The ground trembled violently beneath their feet. The western gate shattered. Stone walls that had stood for centuries erupted into fragments. James stumbled backwards as dust and debris filled the air. Screams echoed from every direction.

Dozens of figures emerged through the destruction. They wore black armour etched with silver symbols that seemed to absorb the surrounding light. Long cloaks fluttered behind them like living shadows. At their centre walked a man carrying a spear forged entirely from black crystal. The moment he stepped into the valley, every sound seemed to disappear.

Birds stopped singing. The wind ceased moving. Even the flames burning nearby appeared frozen. An unnatural pressure descended upon the entire estate. James struggled to breathe. The stranger's presence felt overwhelming.

It was as though a mountain had suddenly appeared above him."Impossible," Alaric whispered. His hands trembled."The Hollow Legion."The name clearly meant something. Something terrible. James had never seen his father look so shaken. Not even once."Father, who are they?"

Alaric's expression darkened."The reason our family was erased from history."Before James could ask another question, a woman suddenly appeared beside them. His mother.Elena Aurelian. Her silver hair flowed wildly behind her as she hurried across the courtyard. She looked directly at her husband. Neither spoke. Neither needed to.

Years of understanding passed between them in a single glance. The realisation struck James immediately. They already knew. They had always known. Somewhere deep inside, they had been waiting for this day."What is happening?" James demanded.

His voice cracked."No more secrets."Elena rushed forward and grabbed his shoulders. Her eyes shimmered with tears. For the first time in his life, James saw genuine sorrow within them."You must listen carefully."

Fear tightened his chest."Mother—"No."Her grip tightened."You must listen."The urgency in her voice silenced him."Everything we told you about our family was a lie."James stared."What?"We are not ordinary nobles."

Alaric stepped beside them."We are the last descendants of the Echo Bloodline."The words meant nothing to James. Yet their expressions made his stomach twist."The Echo Bloodline?" he asked. Elena nodded."An ancient lineage that should have vanished thousands of years ago."The distant sounds of battle intensified. Powerful bursts of magic illuminated the valley.

Servants screamed. Buildings collapsed. Death rapidly approached. Still, his parents continued. As though there was no longer time for anything else."The memories of our ancestors exist within our blood," Alaric explained. Every generation inherits fragments of those who came before."

James blinked."What are you talking about?"You were born with it."His father stepped closer."It has not awakened yet, but one day you will hear them."Hear who?"Our ancestors."James felt as though the world had suddenly become unreal. This had to be some kind of nightmare. None of it made sense. Before he could respond, the black-armored soldiers finally entered the courtyard. Dozens of them. Each carried enough magical power to terrify experienced warriors.

The man with the black crystal spear stepped forward. His expression remained emotionless.Cold.Ancient.Predatory.He studied the Aurelian family with quiet interest."Alaric Aurelian."

His voice echoed strangely through the courtyard."You have hidden well."Alaric moved in front of James."You've already won."The stranger nodded."Yes."Then why continue?"The man's gaze shifted toward James. A faint smile appeared."Because one survived."The realisation struck immediately.

They were here for him. Every instinct inside James screamed danger. The stranger slowly raised his spear."Hand over the boy."A terrifying silence followed. Then Alaric laughed. The sound shocked everyone. Even the attackers seemed surprised."You travelled across kingdoms."His father smiled."You destroyed entire cities searching for us."

The laughter continued."And you still think we would surrender him?"The stranger's eyes narrowed. The first time, annoyance crossed his face."Then this ends here."Power exploded outward. The courtyard shattered. James barely managed to remain standing. Cracks spread across the ground. The fountain disintegrated instantly. Nearby buildings collapsed as an invisible force crushed them apart.

The sheer power exceeded anything James thought possible. His father stepped forward. Golden light erupted from his body. Ancient symbols ignited across his skin. The air itself began vibrating. For a brief moment, James forgot to breathe. His father wasn't merely a noble.

He was a mage. A powerful one.Perhaps far stronger than anyone in the kingdom. Yet the black-armored stranger showed no concern. Instead, he smiled."At last."

The battle began. The world exploded into chaos. Golden fire collided with darkness. The night sky shattered beneath unimaginable magical forces. Mountains trembled. Clouds scattered. James watched in disbelief as his father unleashed spell after spell, powerful enough to destroy entire armies.

Each attack illuminated the valley. Each collision sent shockwaves racing through the landscape. Still, the enemy continued advancing. More soldiers poured through the ruined gates. The estate was falling. And there was nothing James could do.

The helplessness felt unbearable. He wanted to fight. Wanted to protect his family.Wanted to stop the nightmare unfolding before his eyes. Yet compared to these monsters, he was powerless. Completely powerless.

The realisation hurt more than anything. For years, he had trained with swords. Studied tactics.Dreamed of becoming strong. Yet when disaster arrived, strength meant nothing. Because he did not possess enough of it.

Then something unexpected happened. A soldier broke through the defensive line. Straight toward him. The armoured warrior raised a curved blade. James reacted instantly. Training took over. He grabbed his wooden sword and struck. The weapon shattered. The soldier laughed. A heartbeat later, the blade descended toward James's throat.

Death approached.Fast.Unavoidable.Then silver light flashed. Elena appeared between them. The enemy's blade pierced her chest. Time stopped. James stared. His mind refused to process what he was seeing. Blood stained her dress.

The soldier looked surprised. Elena smiled softly. And then she whispered something. A single phrase. One sentence that would haunt James forever."Live long enough to learn the truth."

The world exploded. Not outside.Inside him. Pain erupted through every nerve. A strange pressure awakened deep within his blood.Voices.Countless voices. Whispers echoed inside his mind.Ancient.Forgotten.Endless.James collapsed to his knees.

The whispers grew louder. Thousands of voices speaking simultaneously. Thousands of lives.Thousands of memories. A flood of knowledge crashed against his consciousness. The Echo Bloodline had awakened. And somewhere within those endless voices, one message repeated over and over again.Run.Run.Run.His father saw it happen.

Hope appeared within his eyes."The bloodline awakened."The black spear wielder suddenly looked alarmed. For the first time since arriving."Kill him now!"

Every soldier charged forward. At the same moment, Alaric unleashed a spell so powerful that the night itself appeared to split apart. A massive golden gateway materialised behind James. Ancient runes rotated across its surface. Space distorted. Reality bent.

His father's body immediately began crumbling into glowing dust. The spell was costing his life."Father!"Alaric looked at him one final time. There was pride in his eyes. And sorrow."So many answers remain hidden from you."

His voice weakened."But remember this."The gateway widened. The enemy rushed closer."The people who killed us are not the true enemy."James froze. What? The black spear wielder's expression darkened."Stop him!"

Alaric smiled. And spoke his final words."Find Archmage Vaelor."Then he pushed James into the portal. The world vanished. Darkness swallowed everything. The screams disappeared. The battle disappeared. His parents disappeared.

James fell endlessly through the void. The last thing he saw before consciousness abandoned him was the image of the black spear wielder staring directly into the portal.Watching.Waiting.And smiling. As though James's escape had never been a problem.

As though everything that had happened tonight was only the beginning. Then the darkness consumed him completely. And somewhere far beyond the boundaries of the world, an ancient pair of golden eyes slowly opened. A voice older than history whispered through the void."The final heir has awakened."And for the first time in a thousand years...the prison beneath reality trembled.
