CHAPTER 28 — THE FIRST SECRET
last update2026-10-26 05:10:27

The door inside my chest opened.

I felt it.

Not metaphorically.

Not like a memory.

Not like some strange vision the island was forcing into my head.

It opened.

Something cold moved through me.

From my chest to my throat.

From my throat to my skull.

I couldn't breathe.

Aria screamed my name.

“Ethan!”

I dropped to my knees.

My hands hit the stone floor.

The little girl backed away.

“No…”

Her voice was barely audible.

I looked up at her.

“What?”

She was crying.

“You opened it.”

I looked down.

The black doorway beneath my skin had widened.

There was no wound.

No blood.

Just darkness.

A perfect doorway inside my body.

And behind it—

I could see something.

A sky.

Red.

Three moons.

A city burning beneath them.

My city.

My memory.

My nightmare.

I reached toward it.

Aria grabbed my wrist.

“Don't.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because you said not to.”

“I don't remember saying that.”

She shook her head.

“You did.”

“When?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Before you forgot me.”

The stranger stood behind her.

He wasn't looking at me anymore.

He was looking at the child.

“Tell him.”

The girl shook her head.

“No.”

“You have to.”

“No!”

Her small hands covered her face.

The stranger crouched beside her.

“You wanted him to remember.”

“I wanted him to remember me.”

“He can't remember you without remembering everything.”

She looked at me.

“That's not true.”

The stranger sighed.

“You know it is.”

I stood slowly.

The darkness inside my chest closed.

The mark remained.

Seven circles.

But now only four were glowing.

I looked at the stranger.

“Tell me the truth.”

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who am I?”

He stared at me.

“You're Ethan Cross.”

“That's my name.”

“Yes.”

“It's not my first name.”

“No.”

“Then what was it?”

The stranger's jaw tightened.

“You had many.”

“Give me one.”

He looked at Aria.

She nodded.

“Tell him.”

He closed his eyes.

“Azael.”

The word struck me.

The cave vanished.

I was standing somewhere beyond stars.

There was no ground.

No sky.

No time.

Only darkness.

And I was there.

Not as Ethan.

Not as a man.

I was awareness.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

I had no body.

No face.

No heartbeat.

But I could think.

And I was alone.

Then—

someone spoke.

“Are you lonely?”

I turned.

There was nothing.

“Who are you?”

A laugh answered me.

Soft.

Warm.

Beautiful.

“I don't know.”

The darkness changed.

A tiny point of violet light appeared.

I moved toward it.

The light became larger.

Brighter.

Until I saw her.

A woman.

Not fully formed.

Not human.

Just possibility.

Violet eyes.

She looked at me.

And smiled.

“You're strange.”

I remember laughing.

For the first time.

“I don't know what strange means.”

She moved closer.

“It means you're interesting.”

“Why?”

“Because you don't know anything.”

I looked around.

“Neither do you.”

She smiled.

“I know one thing.”

“What?”

“I found you.”

The memory broke.

I opened my eyes.

I was back in the cave.

Aria was holding me.

“Ethan.”

I stared at her.

Her face was wet with tears.

“I remember.”

She whispered.

“What?”

“You.”

Her lips trembled.

“You were the first thing I ever saw.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You weren't human.”

“Neither were you.”

The stranger looked away.

I stared at him.

“What happened?”

He answered quietly.

“You became obsessed with her.”

Aria's eyes narrowed.

“That's not the word.”

The stranger looked at her.

“It is.”

“No.”

Her voice hardened.

“He loved me.”

“He loved the idea of never losing you.”

Silence.

I felt the words cut through me.

“What did I do?”

The stranger looked at me.

“You made her immortal.”

Aria closed her eyes.

I could see the pain on her face.

“You gave her eternity.”

“And she didn't want it.”

“She wanted a choice.”

The little girl whispered—

“She wanted to be able to leave.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

The girl stared at me.

“Because you were becoming afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“Losing her.”

The chamber trembled.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The stranger stood.

“We need to move.”

“No.”

I didn't move.

“I'm not going anywhere until I know everything.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

The black mark on my chest pulsed.

The stranger stepped backward.

“If you remember everything here, this island will collapse.”

“Then let it.”

Aria grabbed my arm.

“No.”

I turned toward her.

“You said you wanted the truth.”

“I do.”

“Then why stop me?”

“Because I don't want the truth if it destroys you.”

Her voice broke.

“I already lost you once.”

She looked at the black mark.

“I won't lose you again.”

I pulled her closer.

Her forehead touched mine.

“I don't know how many times we've done this.”

She closed her eyes.

“Neither do I.”

“But I know one thing.”

“What?”

“I choose you now.”

She opened her eyes.

“And if the past says I shouldn't?”

“I don't care.”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“Ethan…”

“I don't care who I was.”

I touched her face.

“I care who I am.”

She kissed me.

Slowly.

Not desperate this time.

Not frightened.

Just certain.

For a moment, the island disappeared.

Then—

the little girl laughed.

We broke apart.

She was smiling.

“That's what you said before.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“You always chose her.”

The stranger looked at the child.

“Don't.”

She ignored him.

“He was a king.”

I froze.

She continued.

“He was a god.”

The stranger's expression darkened.

“He was a monster.”

I swallowed.

“And she?”

The girl smiled.

“She was the only person who could tell him no.”

Aria looked at her.

“Who are you?”

The child hesitated.

The stranger stepped forward.

“Don't ask her.”

“Why?”

“Because she doesn't know.”

The girl looked at me.

“I know.”

She reached for my hand.

I took it.

Her tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

“My name is…”

She stopped.

Her eyes flickered violet.

Then silver.

Then violet again.

“I don't remember.”

My heart tightened.

The stranger looked at me.

“That's why she's dangerous.”

“She's a child.”

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“She is the part of you that remembers what you chose.”

I stared at her.

The little girl looked back at me.

“What did I choose?”

She smiled.

“You.”

I frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does to you.”

The chamber shook violently.

A crack tore across the ceiling.

Marcus's voice came from somewhere beyond the wall.

“ETHAN!”

I turned.

“Marcus!”

“Get out!”

Something slammed against the stone.

“Now!”

The stranger moved toward the wall.

“Too late.”

A black claw pierced through.

The soldiers screamed outside.

Gunfire erupted.

The stranger looked at me.

“You wanted the truth.”

“Yes.”

“Then take this one.”

He pointed at the black mark on my chest.

“That isn't a seal.”

I stared at him.

“What is it?”

“A door.”

“To what?”

He looked at Aria.

“To the part of you that you buried.”

The claw ripped through the wall.

Stone exploded.

I pulled Aria backward.

The little girl screamed.

The stranger raised his hand.

A wave of black energy slammed into the creature.

It flew backward.

“Go!”

We ran.

The secret chamber opened into another tunnel.

Marcus and his soldiers were fighting outside.

Creatures poured through every opening.

I grabbed Aria.

The little girl held my other hand.

The other Aria followed behind us.

We ran deeper.

Then—

the tunnel ended.

A cliff.

Below us was an enormous underground cavern.

I stared.

My breath caught.

There was a city beneath the island.

Not ruins.

A living city.

Thousands of lights.

Towers.

Roads.

Bridges.

People.

Hundreds of thousands.

All of them looked upward.

All of them had stopped.

One by one—

they began kneeling.

Aria stared.

“What is this?”

I couldn't answer.

The stranger stood beside me.

“Your kingdom.”

I shook my head.

“I don't have a kingdom.”

“You did.”

“When?”

“Before you became human.”

The people below began chanting.

At first, softly.

Then louder.

One word.

Repeated again and again.

“Azael.”

“Azael.”

“Azael.”

My chest burned.

The four glowing circles flared.

Then a fifth.

The stranger's face changed.

“No.”

The sixth ignited.

He grabbed my shoulder.

“Ethan, don't remember.”

The seventh remained dark.

I looked at it.

Then at Aria.

She understood.

“Whatever happens…”

She stepped closer.

“…don't let go of me.”

I nodded.

“I won't.”

The final circle began to glow.

The stranger shouted—

“RUN!”

But it was already too late.

The seventh symbol opened.

Not like a light.

Like an eye.

And every person in the city below screamed.

The sky beneath the island turned red.

Three moons appeared where there should have been solid rock.

And somewhere far above us—

something enormous woke up.

The stranger looked at me in terror.

“You've remembered the first secret.”

I stared at the impossible sky.

“What is the first secret?”

He swallowed.

“You didn't come to this island to escape.”

The ground beneath us began to split.

“You came here…”

A roar shook the entire cavern.

“…because this is where you buried yourself.”

Then the city below erupted in golden light.

And every voice beneath us spoke together.

“WELCOME HOME, KING.”
