CHAPTER 27 — THE STRANGE MARK
last update2026-10-26 05:09:07

For several seconds, nobody breathed.

The man standing in the doorway looked exactly like me.

Not similar.

Not close.

Exactly.

Same face.

Same jaw.

Same scar above my eyebrow.

Even the small crease beside my left eye was there.

But his eyes were different.

Mine were tired.

His were ancient.

He looked at me the way a man looks at a grave he has visited too many times.

Then he smiled.

“You still don't remember.”

I tightened my grip around Aria's hand.

“Who are you?”

His smile faded.

“That question again.”

He stepped forward.

Marcus immediately raised his weapon.

“Stay where you are.”

The man looked at him.

Marcus froze.

His finger remained on the trigger.

But he couldn't move.

The stranger turned back to me.

“You always bring soldiers.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because you're afraid of being alone.”

The words struck somewhere deep.

I stepped forward.

“You said you've killed me before.”

“I didn't say that.”

“You said I should have remembered her.”

“Yes.”

“Then who is she?”

His eyes moved toward Aria.

Something dark passed through his expression.

“Your greatest mistake.”

Aria stiffened.

I moved between them.

“Don't talk about her like that.”

The stranger laughed.

A quiet laugh.

Almost sad.

“You still do it.”

“Do what?”

“Protect her.”

He looked at the other Aria.

Then back at me.

“Even when you know what she becomes.”

The other Aria's face went pale.

“What does that mean?”

The stranger didn't answer.

Instead, he raised his hand.

The strange mark on my chest burned.

I dropped to one knee.

Pain exploded through my ribs.

Aria caught me.

“Ethan!”

The seven symbols beneath my skin moved.

They twisted.

Rearranged.

Then formed something I had never seen before.

A circle.

With a line running through its center.

The stranger stared at it.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“No.”

Marcus managed to move again.

“What is it?”

The stranger backed away.

“It's awake.”

The chamber shook.

Stone cracked overhead.

Dust filled the air.

The millions of figures beyond the doorway remained perfectly still.

I looked past the stranger.

There were cities behind him.

Not ruins.

Living cities.

Towers reaching into a crimson sky.

Bridges floating between mountains.

Ships moving through the air.

People wearing armor unlike anything I'd ever seen.

And millions of them were kneeling.

All facing me.

My stomach turned.

“Where are we?”

The stranger looked at me.

“Home.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“You've said that before.”

“I'm not from here.”

His expression softened.

“You were never from anywhere.”

The mark on my chest burned again.

I screamed.

Aria held me tighter.

The stranger watched.

“You made yourself human.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“You wanted weakness.”

He took another step.

“You wanted hunger. Fear. Pain.”

Another.

“You wanted to know what it felt like to lose.”

My breathing slowed.

“How do you know?”

“Because I was there.”

He touched his chest.

“I was there when you made the choice.”

My blood ran cold.

“You're me.”

He smiled.

“Not exactly.”

The other Aria stepped forward.

“Then what are you?”

The stranger looked at her.

“A consequence.”

The chamber went silent.

I stared at him.

“A consequence of what?”

“Of forgetting.”

Something moved behind him.

A little girl stepped out of the crowd.

Silver hair.

Violet eyes.

My heart stopped.

Her small hand held the edge of the stranger's black cloak.

She looked at me.

“Father?”

The word shattered me.

I couldn't move.

Aria whispered beside me.

“Ethan…”

The girl smiled.

“You came back.”

I swallowed.

“I know you.”

She nodded.

“You promised.”

The stranger looked down at her.

Then back at me.

“She remembers everything.”

I took a step forward.

The girl immediately ran toward me.

The stranger didn't stop her.

She collided with my legs.

I dropped to my knees.

Her arms wrapped around my neck.

And the world disappeared.

I remembered.

Not one memory.

Thousands.

A lifetime that wasn't a lifetime.

A city under three moons.

A throne carved from black stone.

Aria beside me.

The child in my arms.

The girl laughing as she chased light across a garden.

The first time she called me father.

The first time I held her.

The first time Aria told me she hated the crown.

The first war.

The second.

The thousandth.

I remembered winning.

I remembered losing.

I remembered becoming something nobody could stop.

Then—

I remembered the cage.

Seven symbols.

Seven seals.

But they weren't placed around me.

They were placed around her.

Aria.

My Aria.

She stood inside a circle of white light.

Chains of energy wrapped around her wrists.

Her violet eyes were filled with tears.

I stood outside the circle.

Angry.

Terrified.

Desperate.

“You'll hurt yourself.”

She shook her head.

“You're hurting me.”

“I can protect you.”

“You can't.”

“I can.”

“You already tried.”

The memory changed.

A battlefield.

Bodies everywhere.

Aria standing before me.

Blood on her dress.

“You promised me a choice.”

I remembered my own voice.

“I gave you everything.”

“I didn't ask for everything.”

“What did you ask for?”

She stepped closer.

“You.”

Then the memory shattered.

I returned to the cave.

The little girl was still holding me.

I was crying.

I didn't remember the last time I'd cried.

The stranger watched silently.

Aria stood several feet away.

Tears streamed down her face.

“I remember,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

She touched her chest.

“I remember you.”

The other Aria backed away.

“No.”

Aria turned toward her.

The two women stared at each other.

Same face.

Different souls.

The stranger spoke.

“Now you understand.”

I stood.

“Understand what?”

“The island didn't create two Arias.”

He pointed toward the woman who had lived here for three years.

“It preserved the memory.”

Then he pointed toward the hostess.

“And it brought back the woman.”

The other Aria's face collapsed.

“No…”

She looked at me.

“I am real.”

I didn't know what to say.

She had saved my life.

Fought beside me.

Shared my fear.

I had kissed her.

I had trusted her.

If she was only a memory—

then every moment with her had still felt real.

The stranger looked at me.

“That is the cruelest part.”

He walked toward her.

She backed away.

“You weren't created to deceive him.”

He stopped.

“You were created because he couldn't survive without you.”

Her lips trembled.

“Then why do I feel?”

“Because he gave you his memories.”

She looked at me.

I couldn't breathe.

“You gave me…”

“Everything you were afraid to lose.”

The chamber shook violently.

The doorway behind us began collapsing.

The millions beyond it disappeared into darkness.

The stranger looked at me.

“We don't have much time.”

“Time for what?”

“For the hunt.”

A roar came from the tunnel.

Then another.

Marcus turned.

“They're inside.”

I looked at the entrance.

Black creatures poured through the passage.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

Marcus shouted.

“Fire!”

Gunfire erupted.

The cave became chaos.

I pushed Aria behind me.

The little girl grabbed my coat.

“Father.”

I looked down.

She pointed toward the wall.

“Your mark.”

I looked.

The strange symbol on my chest was glowing through my clothes.

The wall responded.

A hidden door appeared.

The stranger smiled.

“There.”

I ran toward it.

Aria followed.

The other Aria hesitated.

I stopped.

She looked at me.

“I don't want to die.”

I extended my hand.

“Then don't.”

She stared at it.

For a moment, she didn't move.

Then she took it.

We ran.

The door opened.

Inside was a narrow chamber.

At the center stood a stone table.

On it—

a black object.

I recognized it immediately.

A military dog tag.

I picked it up.

ETHAN CROSS

Underneath was a date.

The same date from the dog tag beneath the temple.

But there was something different.

A second name had been carved into the back.

ARIA.

My fingers tightened.

The hostess saw it.

Her face changed.

“That was mine.”

“You recognize it?”

She nodded.

“I don't know how.”

The other Aria stepped closer.

“Look at the mark.”

I turned the tag over.

The symbol was there.

Seven circles.

One glowing.

But beneath them was another inscription.

I wiped the dirt away.

Three words.

SHE CHOSE YOU.

My chest tightened.

“Who?”

The little girl answered.

“Mother.”

I looked at Aria.

She was staring at the inscription.

The stranger stepped into the chamber.

“Don't open the next door.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because that one doesn't lead to the past.”

“What does it lead to?”

He looked at the little girl.

“The future.”

A deep rumble came from beneath us.

The stone floor cracked.

The strange mark on my chest suddenly changed.

Seven circles became six.

Then five.

Then four.

The stranger's eyes widened.

“No.”

“What?”

He grabbed my arm.

“Your seal isn't breaking.”

The remaining symbols burned brighter.

“They're disappearing.”

I pulled my arm away.

“What does that mean?”

He stared at me.

“It means whatever was keeping you human…”

He looked toward Aria.

“…is losing.”

The chamber door slammed shut.

Darkness swallowed us.

Then a woman's voice whispered from somewhere behind me.

“Ethan.”

I turned.

Nothing.

The voice came again.

Closer.

“You promised you'd forget.”

The little girl began crying.

Aria grabbed my hand.

The other Aria stepped backward.

Marcus shouted from the other side of the door.

“ETHAN!”

I heard something hit the stone.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

silence.

I looked down.

The strange mark on my chest was no longer burning.

It was moving.

Like something beneath my skin was drawing a door.

A perfect black doorway appeared across my chest.

And from inside it—

something knocked.

Three times.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

The little girl whispered through her tears.

“Don't answer.”

I stared at the mark.

“Why?”

She looked up at me.

“Because last time…”

Her voice broke.

“…you opened it.”

The fourth knock came.

And this time

the door inside my chest opened.
