For seventeen years, Kael Ashryn has lived as an outcast in the Kingdom of Valenor. Branded the "Cursed Child" after his parents died under mysterious circumstances, he is blamed for every tragedy that befalls his village. Shunned, ridiculed, and denied every chance to prove himself, Kael clings to the hope that one day he will earn the acceptance he has always longed for. That hope is destroyed when a sacred relic vanishes from the royal vault. Framed by fabricated evidence and abandoned by everyone he trusted, Kael is convicted of treason and sentenced to a public execution. As he awaits death, an ancient seal buried beneath the execution platform suddenly responds to his blood, awakening the long-forgotten Shadow Monarch Core. The execution grounds erupt into chaos as living shadows slaughter the soldiers, allowing Kael to escape. Branded the greatest threat to humanity, Kael becomes the target of a continent-wide manhunt. Royals, powerful nobles, secret organizations, and mysterious cults all seek to capture him, each hiding motives tied to a forgotten past. While struggling to control his terrifying new abilities, Kael uncovers the truth behind history's greatest lie: the legendary Shadow Monarch was never a tyrant but a hero who sacrificed everything to imprison the ancient Void Sovereign. Joined by unlikely allies—warriors, scholars, mercenaries, and mages burdened with secrets of their own—Kael discovers that his parents were guardians of the ancient seal and that his entire life was orchestrated by those who feared his true heritage. Yet every new power he gains strengthens the whispers of darkness within him, threatening to consume his humanity. As kingdoms fall into war and ancient monsters awaken, Kael must master the shadows without surrendering to them. To save the continent from a returning nightmare, he must uncover the truth before history repeats itself.

Chapter 1:The Boy Everyone Hated

The morning bell echoed through Ashcroft Village, but no one greeted the dawn with a smile.

Not when Kael Ashryn was walking its streets.

The seventeen-year-old kept his head lowered as he carried a bundle of firewood across his shoulders. His clothes were faded and patched in more places than he could count, and dust clung to his worn boots. He had learned long ago that meeting people's eyes only invited more trouble.

"Look who's here."

"The cursed brat."

"My crops started dying the year he was born."

"Stay away from him!"

A woman grabbed her little daughter and pulled her behind her skirts as Kael passed. The child peeked around her mother with curious eyes.

"Mom, why is everyone afraid of him?"

"Don't look at him," the woman whispered sharply. "Bad luck follows that boy."

Kael heard every word.

He always did.

He simply kept walking.

What was there to say? No explanation had ever changed anyone's mind.

Seventeen years ago, his parents had died in a mysterious fire on the outskirts of the village. On that same night, a violent storm destroyed homes, poisoned the fields, and left dozens injured. The frightened villagers needed someone to blame.

They chose the only survivor.

Kael.

Ever since then, every failed harvest, every sick animal, every accident had become his fault.

A broken cart wheel?

Kael's curse.

A child catching a fever?

Kael's curse.

Even a dry summer somehow became his responsibility.

He reached Old Bren's woodshed and carefully stacked the firewood.

The elderly woodcutter counted the logs before tossing a few copper coins onto the ground instead of placing them in Kael's hand.

"There," Bren muttered. "Now leave."

Kael bent down and picked up the coins without complaint.

"Thank you."

The old man clicked his tongue.

"Don't thank me. Just don't come back until next week."

Kael nodded and quietly walked away.

By midday, his stomach growled with hunger.

The three copper coins weren't enough to buy a proper meal, only a stale loaf of bread from the bakery. Even then, the baker wrapped it in old cloth and set it on the counter without looking at him.

"No credit," the baker said.

"I wasn't asking."

Kael left before another customer could complain about his presence.

He wandered beyond the village until the houses disappeared behind rows of pine trees.

Only there could he breathe.

Nestled beside a small stream stood a weathered wooden cabin—his home.

The roof leaked whenever it rained, the windows were cracked, and the fireplace smoked more than it warmed. Yet it was the only place where silence didn't carry hatred.

Kael sat on the front step, breaking the stale bread into small pieces.

A tiny gray bird fluttered onto the railing.

"You came back," he said with a faint smile.

The bird chirped happily.

"I guess you're the only one who doesn't think I'm cursed."

He tossed it a crumb.

For a brief moment, the weight on his chest eased.

After eating, Kael fetched an old wooden sword leaning against the wall.

His father had carved it for him years before... at least, that's what the village elder had told him. Kael remembered almost nothing about his parents. Only scattered images remained—a warm hand, a familiar laugh, and a lullaby he could never quite recall.

He stepped into the clearing behind the cabin.

One swing.

Then another.

Again.

Again.

Sweat dripped down his forehead as he practiced alone, imagining opponents that didn't exist.

"If I become stronger..." he murmured between breaths, "maybe one day they'll stop looking at me like that."

The forest answered only with rustling leaves.

Hours passed before exhaustion forced him to stop.

As he reached for a bucket of water beside the cabin, a sudden burning sensation shot through his left hand.

"Ah!"

The bucket slipped from his grasp.

Water splashed across the ground.

Kael stared at his palm.

The strange black mark he'd carried since birth pulsed beneath his skin like living ink.

Thin black lines spread across his hand before retreating again.

His heartbeat quickened.

"It... moved?"

The mark had always been there, but it had never changed.

Never.

The air around him suddenly turned unnaturally cold.

The birds stopped singing.

Even the wind fell silent.

A whisper brushed against his ears.

"...Heir..."

Kael spun around.

"Who's there?"

No one.

Only trees swaying gently in the fading afternoon light.

He looked back at his hand.

The mark had returned to normal, as though nothing had happened.

"I'm imagining things..."

Yet deep inside, he knew he wasn't.

Something had awakened.

Something ancient.

Before he could gather his thoughts, frantic shouting echoed from the direction of the village.

The sound of galloping horses followed.

Kael climbed the small hill overlooking Ashcroft.

His eyes widened.

A column of armored riders bearing the royal crest thundered through the village gates.

The villagers quickly gathered in the square.

At their head rode a stern captain clad in silver armor.

His booming voice carried across the entire settlement.

"By order of His Majesty!"

The captain unrolled a parchment.

"We seek one called Kael Ashryn."

Kael's blood ran cold.

The captain's next words froze the breath in his lungs.

"Anyone found sheltering him will be charged with treason."
