CHAPTER 37 — THE TRUTH ABOUT ETHAN
IDENTIFY THE IMPOSTOR. Nobody moved. The words remained on the screen. White letters. Black background. Simple. Clinical. Terrifying. I looked at Kane. He looked at me. Then at the screen. The man on the vessel was gone. Only the Meridian symbol remained. Marcus raised his weapon. “Both of you.” Kane slowly turned toward him. “General—” “Hands where I can see them.” Kane obeyed. I did the same. Aria stood between us, breathing hard. Daniel backed away from both of us. Marcus looked at the two men. “Which one of you is Victor Kane?” The Kane beside me answered immediately. “I am.” The screen beeped. IDENTITY CONFLICT. Marcus's finger tightened around the trigger. I looked at the screen. “There's only one way to settle this.” Kane looked at me. “What?” “Ask something only the real Kane would know.” Marcus shook his head. “Meridian could have copies of personnel records.” “Then not a fact.” I looked at Kane. “A memory.” His expression changed. “That's dangerous.” “Why?” “Because memory is exactly what they manipulate.” I stepped closer. “Then let's see what they couldn't erase.” Kane stared at me. For several seconds, neither of us spoke. Then I asked: “What did you say to me the night before my first field operation?” His expression didn't change. “I told you to keep your head down.” “No.” He said nothing. “You told me something else.” Kane's eyes narrowed. I continued. “You said, ‘The man who survives isn't always the bravest man in the room.’” Marcus looked at him. Kane slowly nodded. “Yes.” I studied his face. “That was thirteen years ago.” “I remember.” “Where were we?” “Camp Meridian.” I shook my head. “No.” Kane stopped. “We were at Black Ridge.” His eyes hardened. “You're testing me.” “Yes.” He looked at me. “You don't remember Black Ridge.” “I remember enough.” Marcus glanced between us. “Black Ridge was never on the official record.” Kane nodded. “Exactly.” I stepped closer. “What happened there?” Kane's jaw tightened. “You don't want to know.” I almost laughed. “That's becoming a habit.” He looked away. I pressed him. “What happened?” “Your team was ambushed.” “How many?” “Six.” “Wrong.” Kane looked at me. “Seven.” “No.” I stared into his eyes. “Eight.” His expression changed. Only for a fraction of a second. But I saw it. The real Kane had always been difficult to read. This was different. Almost like surprise. I knew that look. I had seen it in interrogations. I turned toward Marcus. “That's not him.” Kane's face hardened. “You're making a mistake.” “No.” I pointed at the screen. “There's another Kane on that ship.” “Then why am I standing here?” “Because they want us to think one of you is an impostor.” Daniel finally spoke. “They don't need an impostor.” I looked at him. “What?” “They need us to believe there is one.” Silence. Daniel walked toward the console. “The system isn't identifying people.” He pointed at the screen. “It's identifying memories.” Marcus frowned. “Explain.” “The Meridian protocol doesn't care what face a person has.” He looked at me. “It cares what they remember.” My stomach tightened. “So both Kanes could be real.” “Yes.” “How?” Daniel hesitated. “Behavioral replication.” Kane looked at him. “Don't.” “You know I'm right.” “What are you talking about?” Marcus asked. Daniel ignored him. “Meridian discovered that if you expose two people to the same psychological conditioning, you can make them develop remarkably similar behavioral patterns.” Marcus frowned. “But not identical memories.” “No.” Daniel pointed toward the screen. “That's the trick.” The display changed. Two profiles appeared. KANE-01 KANE-02 Both showed the same photograph. The same face. The same fingerprints. The same military history. Marcus stared. “This is impossible.” Daniel shook his head. “No.” He looked at me. “It's engineered.” Aria stepped toward the screen. “What did they do?” Daniel answered: “They trained a second man to believe he was Victor Kane.” The room became silent. I looked at the man beside me. Kane's expression was unreadable. “You knew.” He didn't answer. “Kane.” He finally looked at me. “Yes.” My stomach dropped. “You knew there was another version of you.” “Yes.” “Why didn't you tell us?” “Because I didn't know which one of us was real.” Marcus lowered his weapon slightly. “You've known this entire time?” Kane nodded. “Since the first time I saw him.” “Where?” “Seventeen years ago.” My eyes moved to Daniel. Seventeen years. Again. Everything seemed to circle back to that number. I looked at Aria. She was staring at the screen. Her face had gone pale. “What?” She pointed at the profiles. “There's another one.” I looked. A third file had appeared. E.C.-01 My blood ran cold. Another photograph appeared. My face. Then another. E.C.-02 My face again. Then: E.C.-03 My face. Marcus whispered: “No.” I stared at the three profiles. “Three.” Daniel nodded. “You weren't the first.” I felt something crack inside me. Not physically. Something deeper. A belief. The belief that I knew who I was. I had spent my entire life believing I was Ethan Cross. Now the name itself felt like a question. “Who was E.C.-01?” Daniel didn't answer. “Who?” He looked at the screen. “Your original profile.” “And E.C.-02?” “Your first replacement.” I swallowed. “E.C.-03?” Daniel looked at me. “You.” I stared at him. “That doesn't make sense.” “It does.” “No.” “You're the third iteration.” “Iteration?” “A behavioral reconstruction.” My voice became quieter. “So I'm not Ethan Cross?” Daniel took a breath. “You are.” “That wasn't my question.” He looked at me. “You are Ethan Cross.” “But?” “There was another Ethan before you.” My heart pounded. “Was he real?” “Yes.” “Where is he?” Daniel didn't answer. I grabbed him by the collar. “Where?” Marcus stepped forward. “Ethan.” I ignored him. “Where is he?” Daniel looked directly into my eyes. “You killed him.” I released him. The room became silent. “No.” Daniel didn't move. “You were there.” “No.” “You pulled the trigger.” “No.” “You watched him die.” “No.” My voice cracked. “I didn't.” Daniel's expression softened. “You don't remember.” I stepped backward. The room seemed to move around me. The screen blurred. The lights became too bright. A sound began inside my head. A heartbeat. Slow. Heavy. Then faster. I closed my eyes. And suddenly— I was somewhere else. A corridor. White walls. A red emergency light. I was twenty-five again. Young. Confused. Bleeding from my forehead. A gun in my hand. Someone stood in front of me. Another Ethan. Same face. Same eyes. Same voice. He looked terrified. “Don't.” My younger self raised the gun. The other Ethan stepped backward. “Please.” A woman stood behind the glass. The silver-haired woman. Watching. Recording. The other Ethan looked at her. “You promised.” She didn't respond. He looked back at me. “You don't know what you're doing.” My finger tightened around the trigger. “No.” His eyes filled with tears. “Ethan.” The gun fired. I opened my eyes. I was back in the control room. Aria was holding me. “Ethan.” I couldn't breathe. Marcus was saying something. I couldn't hear him. Daniel was staring at me. Kane had gone pale. I pushed Aria away gently. “What did I just see?” Nobody answered. “What did I see?” Daniel finally spoke. “A memory.” I shook my head. “No.” “You saw the execution.” “Whose?” He stared at me. “Yours.” My stomach turned. I looked at the screen. The three profiles were still there. E.C.-01. E.C.-02. E.C.-03. “Which one died?” Daniel pointed at the first. “E.C.-01.” I stared. “Then who am I?” “E.C.-03.” “What happened to E.C.-02?” Daniel didn't answer. Kane did. “He became Daniel Reed.” I looked at him. Daniel nodded. “So Daniel is Ethan.” “Yes.” “And I'm Ethan.” “Yes.” “And there was another Ethan.” “Yes.” I laughed. A short, bitter sound. “This is insane.” Marcus lowered his weapon. “No.” He looked at me. “It's worse.” I stared at him. “What?” “Because I knew all three.” My blood ran cold. “You knew E.C.-01?” “Yes.” “E.C.-02?” “Yes.” “And me?” He nodded. “Yes.” “Then why did you let me believe I was the only one?” Marcus looked away. “Because that was the mission.” “What mission?” “Protect the original.” I stared at him. “Which original?” Marcus didn't answer. I stepped toward him. “Which one?” He looked at me. “E.C.-01.” I felt something inside me collapse. “He was still alive?” Marcus hesitated. “For a while.” “Where?” “Here.” My eyes moved toward the floor. “The island.” “Yes.” “Then what happened?” Marcus looked at Daniel. Daniel looked down. I understood. “You killed him.” Marcus shook his head. “No.” “Then who?” A voice came through the speakers. The silver-haired woman. “You did.” Everyone turned toward the ceiling. Her voice continued. “You always do.” I stepped toward the nearest camera. “Show yourself.” A monitor came alive. The woman appeared. Older than in the recordings. Maybe late forties. Silver hair. Pale contact lenses. A scar beneath her left eye. She looked directly into the camera. Then she smiled. “Hello, Ethan.” I stared at her. “Who are you?” She tilted her head. “You've asked me that three times.” “What is your name?” She paused. Then: “Dr. Miriam Voss.” Daniel looked shocked. Kane swore under his breath. Marcus closed his eyes. I stared at the screen. “Why do I know you?” “Because you trusted me.” “Why did I kill E.C.-01?” “You didn't.” The room went silent. I frowned. “But you just said I did.” “I said you always do.” She leaned closer to the camera. “You always kill the version of yourself that remembers.” A chill moved through me. “What does that mean?” “It means your memories were never the experiment.” She smiled. “You were.” The screen went black. Then a final message appeared. PHASE THREE INITIATED. The floor beneath us unlocked. A section of steel began sliding apart. Below it was a vertical shaft. A ladder descended into darkness. Marcus looked down. “That's the old containment level.” Daniel shook his head. “It was sealed.” Kane stared at the opening. “Not anymore.” Aria came beside me. Her hand found mine. I looked at her. She was frightened. But she didn't let go. The speakers crackled one final time. Dr. Voss's voice returned. “Ethan.” I looked toward the camera. “If you want the truth about who you are…” A pause. “Come downstairs.” The speaker clicked off. I stared into the shaft. For years, I had believed the worst thing I had done was betray my commanding officer. Then I thought it was abandoning Elena. Then I thought it was stealing an identity and running. Now I wasn't sure any of those things had been the beginning. Maybe they were consequences. Maybe my entire life had been built around something I had forgotten. I looked at Aria. “Stay here.” She shook her head. “No.” “This could be dangerous.” “So could you.” I almost smiled. She squeezed my hand. “I've already lost seventeen years.” Her voice trembled. “I'm not losing another minute.” Marcus stepped toward the ladder. “I'll go first.” Kane followed. Daniel came next. Aria looked at me. I nodded. We descended. One floor. Then another. The deeper we went, the colder it became. The walls changed. Concrete became steel. Steel became reinforced glass. Behind one pane was an empty room. Behind another— a bed. Straps. Medical equipment. A faded name written on the wall. ETHAN CROSS. We continued. At the bottom was a single door. No keypad. No scanner. Just a handwritten inscription. Four words. YOU WERE HERE BEFORE. I stared at it. Then Aria whispered: “I remember.” I looked at her. She touched the door. “I remember this place.” The door opened. And inside I saw myself.Latest Chapter
CHAPTER 40 — THE LAST COPY
The screen went black. For several seconds, nobody moved.I stared at my own reflection in the dead monitor.Same eyes.Same scar beneath my left eyebrow.Same face I had seen in mirrors for thirty-two years.Except now I didn't know if it belonged to me.Behind me, Aria whispered my name.“Ethan.”I didn't answer. My eyes remained fixed on the screen.ORIGINAL SUBJECT: ETHAN CROSS.The words had stopped being words. They had become a weapon.A clean, precise blade driven between my ribs.I stepped closer to the monitor. My reflection stepped closer too.I raised my hand.It did the same.“It's lying,” Aria said. Her voice was steady.Too steady.I turned toward her.“You believe that?”“I believe Meridian lies.”“That isn't what I asked.”She hesitated. That was enough.Something inside my chest tightened.“You don't know either.”“No.”The honesty hurt more than a lie.I looked away.Behind the reinforced glass, E.C.-01 stood completely still. He had been watching us the entire time
CHAPTER 39- THE ORIGINAL
The countdown kept moving.00:41:17.I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.PRIMARY TARGET — ETHAN CROSS.My name.My photograph. My heartbeat. My entire life reduced to a red box on a military computer.I looked at the man behind the glass.E.C.-01.He wasn't smiling anymore.“You knew this would happen.”His eyes remained on the countdown.“I knew it could.”“That's not the same thing.”“No.”He looked at me.“But with Meridian, it usually becomes the same thing.”Marcus stepped toward the control console.“Daniel.”Daniel was already working. His fingers moved across the keyboard.“What are you doing?”“Trying to establish a manual connection.”“To Leviathan?”“Yes.”“Can you stop it?”Daniel didn't answer. That was answer enough. The facility shook.A deep vibration rolled through the floor. The glass beneath my boots trembled.Somewhere far below us, machinery came alive. Not a creature. Not something ancient.A machine.Thousands of tons of steel and electronics waking beneath
CHAPTER 38 — THE MAN IN THE ROOM
I saw myself. Not a photograph. Not a recording.A man.Sitting in a chair.Alive.He was behind a thick glass partition. His wrists were strapped down. His head hung forward. His hair was longer than mine. His face was thinner. But there was no mistaking him.Me.Or someone who looked exactly like me.Aria stopped beside me.“No.”Her voice barely existed.Marcus raised his weapon.Kane stepped closer.Daniel didn't move. The man behind the glass slowly lifted his head. His eyes opened. He looked directly at me.For several seconds, neither of us spoke. Then he smiled. Not happily.Sadly.Like someone seeing an old friend after years of waiting.“Ethan.”My skin went cold.I stepped toward the glass.“Who are you?”The man laughed quietly.“You still ask that.”“I've never met you.”“You have.”“When?”He looked at Aria. She was frozen. Then back at me.“Before they changed you.”My heart began pounding.Marcus moved beside me.“Step away from the glass.”The man ignored him.“Did th

The floor moved. Not much.Just enough to make the lights swing overhead.A low vibration traveled through the concrete beneath my boots.I felt it in my knees. Then my chest. Then my teeth.Whatever was below us was enormous.Marcus looked at Daniel.“What exactly is Leviathan?”Daniel didn't answer. The vibration increased.A pipe above us rattled loose.Water sprayed across the wall.Kane grabbed the edge of the control console.“That's not a generator.”“No,” Daniel said.“Then what is it?”Daniel looked at me.“An underwater platform.”I frowned.“That doesn't explain the size.”“It wasn't built as a ship.”He pointed toward the floor.“It was built as a weapon.”Another tremor.Aria grabbed my arm.“Ethan.”“I know.”“No.”She looked frightened.“I've heard that sound before.”“Where?”She closed her eyes.“Under the water.”My stomach tightened. The ocean. The creature we'd seen. The impossible roar. The silver eyes. The words you returned.Maybe none of it had been supernatura
CHAPTER 35 — THE DREAM
00:49The number changed.00:48.Then—00:47.The room hummed around us.I could hear the ventilation system kicking into a higher setting.A faint chemical smell entered the air.Marcus noticed it too.“Cover your mouths.”Everyone reacted at once.Kane pulled his sleeve over his nose.Daniel grabbed a piece of cloth from a medical cabinet.I tore the bottom of my shirt and wrapped it across my face.Aria looked at the ceiling.“What are they releasing?”Marcus examined one of the vents.“Sedative.”Daniel shook his head.“Not just that.”Marcus looked at him.“What?”“Something designed to lower resistance.”My eyes went to the timer.00:41.The projector came alive.A white screen appeared on the wall. Then a video.A young man sat in a chair.Me.Twenty-five years old.Thinner.Shorter hair.Bruise beneath my left eye.Blood on my lip.I stared at myself.I had seen recordings of this man before. But this was different. He was awake.Alert.And terrified.A voice came from behind
