"Sterling," Freya breathed, the word tasting like bile. She held the brass token as if it might sear her palm. "He’s a vulture, Sean. He doesn’t want your debt. He wants the soil. He wants to harvest whatever it is you’re doing to this land and feed it to his private guard."

Sean looked at the token, then at his garden, which was currently glowing with a soft, pulsating, and slightly ominous violet hue. He wiped his hands on his trousers. "So, he’s coming back? With more than just two thugs?"

"He’ll bring an army if he thinks he can get away with it," Freya said, shoving the token into her pocket. "We don’t have much time."

Sean felt a chill crawl up his spine. He looked at Freya. She looked pale, the remnants of that core-rot still visible in the slight tremor of her hand. "You need to heal, Freya. Faster. If Sterling’s coming, you can't be fighting at half-capacity."

"My core is stable for now, Sean. Don’t get reckless again," she cautioned, though her eyes were weary.

"I’m not being reckless. I’m being efficient. Come on," he urged, grabbing his lantern and ushering her toward the shed. "My grandfather had a journal. He was a bit of a rambling lunatic in his later years, but he had a section on 'accelerated recovery flora.' I think there’s something in there about Soma Berries."

"Soma Berries?" Freya’s eyebrows shot up. "Those are restricted. They’re highly volatile, even for master mages. Are you suggesting we grow a forbidden mana-narcotic in your backyard?"

"I’m suggesting we grow a medicinal booster to keep you from falling over dead the next time a mercenary looks at you," Sean countered, already kicking open the shed door. "Keep your voice down. The potatoes are sleeping."

"The potatoes are—you know what? Never mind," she sighed, following him inside. "What’s the plan, then?"

Sean pulled a dusty, leather-bound book from a crate. He flipped through the pages until he found a sketch of a glowing, translucent vine. "Here. The Soma Berry. It feeds on the exact same frequency as the mana vein. If I can graft it to one of the active rows, it should grow in seconds."

"Seconds? Sean, you’re talking about an ecosystem, not a magic trick," she warned.

"I’m an accountant, Freya. We like speed. Now, hold this," he said, thrusting the lantern into her hands. He knelt in the center of the cabin, scraping away a floorboard to reveal the pulsing, violet earth beneath. "I’m going to need you to focus. Can you ground the excess energy? Like a lightning rod?"

"I can try," she said, kneeling beside him, her silver eyes focused on the dirt. "But if this goes wrong, don't expect me to be polite about it."

"Noted." Sean dug a small hole, placed the seed, and began to chant a rhythm he had picked up from the soil itself. It wasn't formal magic; it was just a stubborn, rhythmic thumping of his fingers against the ground.

The ground shuddered. Almost instantly, a thick, emerald-colored vine erupted from the earth. It wasn't just growing; it was thrashing.

"Sean!" Freya gasped, pulling back as a whip-like tendril lashed out toward her. "It’s too aggressive!"

"Just stay still!" he yelled, trying to guide the vine with his hands. "It needs a focal point! If it doesn't find a source, it’ll just keep reaching!"

The vine surged upward, thick and pulsating with a sugary, intoxicating scent. In a heartbeat, it snaked around Sean’s waist, dragging him forward. He lurched, falling directly into Freya. The vine didn't stop there; it coiled around both of them, pinning their chests together in a tight, tangled knot.

"Oh, for heaven’s sake!" Freya hissed, her face inches from his. She was pinned firmly against him, her breath hitching as the vine tightened, pressing them into a near-embrace. "This is a disaster, you incompetent farmer!"

"Well, at least it’s a romantic disaster?" Sean squeaked, his face burning a bright, mortifying red. He could feel the warmth of her chest against his, the frantic, erratic beat of her heart, and the soft, cool scent of jasmine and ozone that clung to her hair.

"Romantic? I am currently being throttled by a salad, and you’re trying to flirt?" she snapped, though she didn't struggle. Her hands were trapped between them, resting on his chest, her fingers curling into his shirt.

"I’m trying not to die, Freya. And, for the record, this is actually quite comfortable, if you ignore the potential for strangulation," he said, his voice dropping into a shaky, awkward whisper.

Freya looked at him, her eyes widening. The moonlight trickled through the chinks in the shed roof, casting her features in a soft, ethereal light. The irritation in her expression faded, replaced by something far more vulnerable. "You are truly the most infuriating man I have ever met."

"Is that a compliment?" he asked, his heart hammering against her palm.

"It’s an observation," she murmured, her voice losing its edge. She went quiet, the silence in the shed suddenly heavy. "Do you know why I’m here, Sean? Really here?"

"I thought you were just keeping the peace," he said softly.

"I was exiled," she whispered, her gaze dropping to his throat. "My own command betrayed me. They wanted me to sign off on an order to burn a civilian sector because it was 'tainted' by a similar mana leak to this one. I refused. I took the fall so the others would be spared. I was sent here, to the border, to die in obscurity."

Sean felt a surge of protectiveness so intense it actually made his hands shake. He leaned his forehead against hers. "They didn't break you, though. You’re still fighting."

"I was broken," she admitted, her voice trembling. "Until I stumbled onto this farm. Until you started poking the earth with a shovel and acting like the world wasn't trying to tear us apart. You made the ground feel... safe."

"It’s not just the ground, Freya," Sean whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I think it’s us."

She stared at him, her lips parting. The vines around them began to glow with a soft, warm light, as if they were reacting to the intimacy of the moment.

"Sean," she started, her fingers tightening on his shirt. "If we do this—if I stay—you know what that makes us, right? It makes us targets."

"Then we’ll be the hardest targets they’ve ever faced," he promised.

He reached up, his hand hovering over her cheek, brushing a stray lock of silver hair away from her face. She leaned into his touch, her eyes closing. For a second, the world felt like it had narrowed down to just the two of them, held captive by a rogue plant in the middle of a war-torn province.

"You really are a menace," she whispered, a small, genuine smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.

"And you," he whispered back, "are the only reason I’m still standing."

Just as he leaned in, his lips inches from hers, a low, guttural rumble shook the floorboards. It wasn't the wind. It wasn't the vines.

The entire ground beneath the shed gave a violent, sickening lurch. The floorboards buckled, and the violet light beneath them flared into a blinding, jagged streak of neon.

"Sean!" Freya shouted, drawing her sword with her free hand even while pinned. "The vein! It’s spiking!"

"That wasn't supposed to happen!" Sean yelled, his romantic haze vanishing as the ground began to scream—a metallic, grinding sound of earth being forced to do things it wasn't built for.

"Whatever you did to the berries," she hissed, looking at the rapidly vibrating vines, "it’s waking up something much older than this farm."

A deep, rhythmic pulse boomed through the earth, louder than a heartbeat, rattling their teeth.

"I think," Sean said, his voice cracking as he looked at the glowing soil beneath their feet, "that the garden just invited someone else to the party."

The morning mist hung low over the valley, clinging to the damp soil like a shroud, but it did nothing to mask the rhythmic, soul-crushing thud-thud-thud of armored boots.Sean stood at the threshold of the cabin, the rusted iron of his shovel biting into his palm. Beside him, Freya emerged, her movements fluid and lethal, her hand resting firmly on the hilt of her blade. As the fog parted, the golden armor of the Sterling House guard shimmered, a sea of polished plate and cold, cruel steel."Well," Sean breathed, his voice tight. "That’s a lot of people for a morning visit. You think they brought biscuits?"Freya didn't blink. Her silver eyes were hard as polished flint, sweeping the line of men. "They didn’t bring biscuits, you ridiculous man. They brought an executioner’s warrant.""Right. Figures," Sean muttered, pushing his spectacles up his nose. "I spent all night prepping the perimeter for boars. I don’t think I have a plan for an entire regional army.""That makes two of us,"

The floorboards groaned under the pressure, the sound shifting from a dull rumble to the frantic, high-pitched screech of shearing iron. The Soma Berry vines, thick and pulsing with emerald light, suddenly whipped taut like tripwires, dragging Sean and Freya into an unintended, breathless embrace."I thought you said these were just simple medicinal boosters!" Freya shouted, her voice tight as she pressed her palms against Sean’s chest to keep her sword from accidentally skewering his ribs. "This is not medicine, Sean! It’s a botanical nightmare!""I might have misread the soil requirements by a decimal point!" Sean gasped, his face buried against her shoulder as the vines tightened. "Okay, minor adjustment: I think we’re being used as a trellis!""A trellis? Is that your expert assessment?" Freya huffed, her hair whipping around her face as the shed floor bucked again."Just focus on your core, Freya! If the garden is waking up, you’re the only anchor it has!"The air outside the she

The ground beneath Sean’s feet felt like a coiled spring, vibrating with a volatile, earthy anticipation. As he slammed the flat of his shovel into the silt, the soil didn’t just move; it shrieked."Get ready for the main event, Freya!" Sean yelled, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and unbridled, manic glee. "And for heaven's sake, keep your mouth shut if the wind shifts!"Freya, already a blur of charcoal-grey and silver light, vaulted over a rotting fence post. She glanced back, her eyes wide with a mixture of confusion and genuine alarm. "Sean, what exactly did you do to that compost heap?""I introduced it to a very concentrated mana-yeast culture!" he shouted, hopping over a row of twitching cabbages. "It’s currently at peak fermentation pressure. It’s basically a magical claymore, but, you know, slightly more fragrant."Three heavily armored mercenaries slammed through the splintering perimeter gate, their boots churning up the dust. The lead man, a broad-shouldered b

"You really are a disaster, aren't you?" Freya repeated, though her voice lacked any real bite. She didn't let go of his hand, and for a moment, the silence in the cabin was so thick with unspoken tension it felt like a physical weight."I prefer the term 'under-resourced agricultural specialist,'" Sean said, offering a lopsided grin that didn't quite reach his panicked eyes. "Look, if we're doing this, we need ground rules. I'm not a mage, Freya. I’m just a guy who read a lot of boring pamphlets on soil pH balance and managed to accidentally plug into a subterranean mana vein. It’s not science; it’s basically just being a very lucky idiot."Freya let out a soft, huffing sound that might have been a laugh if she weren't so busy trying to maintain her stern Overseer persona. She stepped back, though she kept her fingers hooked into his sleeve. "A 'lucky idiot' who just brewed a potion strong enough to stabilize a collapsing Imperial-grade core? Do you have any idea what they would do t

The air was thick with the scent of ozone and something sharper, like scorched winter iron. Freya’s weight was deceptively heavy, her body rigid with the spasms of a collapsing mana core. Sean didn’t think; he just acted. He scooped her up—she was surprisingly light, like a bundle of winter branches—and kicked the door to his cabin open."Easy, just breathe. I’ve got you," Sean muttered, his heart drumming against his ribs like a trapped bird."Put... me... down, you idiot," Freya rasped, her silver eyes rolling back into her head. "You'll... you’ll contaminate yourself. Let go.""Yeah, that’s not happening, Overseer. You’re a liability, and I don't like losing my investments," Sean joked, his voice strained as he deposited her onto his narrow, dust-covered cot.He fumbled with his spectacles, pushing them up his nose, and sprinted back out into the cool night air. The garden was glowing. The carrots, bathed in the residue of his earlier attempt to ground the land, were pulsing with a
