Smiles, cheers and blissful conversations filled the hall to the brim. It was a totally different tone from what people had witnessed for the last three years.

The gore and the raw sense of danger that began with a simple virus outbreak had kept everyone in hiding.

Now, the Apocalypse had come to an end, and the happiest man in the world was Rufus, because it was also his wedding day.

A smile tugged at his lips, almost spreading to both insides of his ears. He had starved during the Apocalypse, escaped death many times barely by the nose; he had lost everything—his home, his mother, his sister.

However, he had managed to keep one thing: his girlfriend, Mia. She kept him going, and they stuck together during these long painful years, always by each other's side.

And now that the Apocalypse had been announced to have come to an end by the interim world government, they could finally be together.

Rufus waited. The clock in the room grew louder, same with the voices in the background.

It was almost past the time that had been scheduled for them by the ministry, and Mia was still nowhere to be found.

Rufus's heart throbbed continuously against his chest, as multiple dark thoughts swung through his mind.

"Could something have happened to his girl?" The thought crossed through his mind, and he swung his head in a cruel attempt to toss the negativity away.

They had gone through the hard times together; nothing could happen now.

All the hairs on his body were standing. Rufus's sensitivity was at its peak, and his head turned every instant a shadow passed by the door. Still, there was no Mia.

Now he could feel the blazing gaze from a crowd of inquisitive women boring into his back. They were snickering, with the metallic taste of mockery on their lips. They didn't even try to hide their voices while they gossiped about him.

"I heard his girlfriend left him and she's bedding another man right now!" They laughed loudly.

"I mean, who would want to marry such a man? After the Apocalypse, he basically lost everything. Does he really think that any lady would want to start all over with him from scratch?

He must be such a joker. The audacity of men these days, it never ceases to amaze me!"

Rufus's hands tightened sharply. Their words flowed into his hearing nonstop, and he turned to them with a glare that made the temperature in the room drop.

"Just because you all are whores and had to spread your legs to survive doesn't mean every other lady would stoop so low!" he replied, and their faces burned bright red, then popped yellow.

He knew his Mia, and he was glad that he could defend her anyway at any time. There was no way she would cheat on him, even for all the riches in the world; that was just how much they meant to each other.

"You really don't know anything, do you?" he growled, and Rufus scoffed.

They wanted to launch more spiteful attacks at him when the universal alarm system suddenly chimed, and in that instant, the hall broke into a frantic panic.

Everyone understood what this was: there was another zombie rampage.

The few weeks of peace turned out to be nothing but a sham, a calm before the absolute storm.

The echoes of their clamors and rampage bounced off against the walls, and fear glittered over their eyes.

And to make things even worse, the recently implemented emergency radio broadcast chimed.

"This is to inform everyone that there is a rampage in the east zone of the city. Please get your zombie suits on for maximum protection if you must go outside; preferably, don't!"

Rufus's blood froze in his veins the instant he got this message because Mia had gone to the east zone hotel for her bridal preparations, and she was in trouble.

His head ran into a spiral of dark thoughts. His heart pounded heavily against his chest. Everything that he had lost to the apocalypse suddenly surfaced in his mind: his properties, his mother, his sister.

There was no way he was going to allow Mia to be added to this growing list. There was no way he would be left all alone in this cruel world.

Rufus picked up on his feet. His fast and sharp sprint felt like his feet were barely touching the floor.

As fast as he could, he got two zombie suits—a recent invention that had been made to protect people from zombie bites and was in wide distribution all over the city, having a close replica to PPE, only this time with reinforced steel.

After all the training he had gone through, he knew he was supposed to slam the suit on before daring to go outside.

However, Rufus could barely think at the moment, and his mind was clearly focused on only one thing.

The crowd watched him sprint into the dangerous streets without any protection, carrying only crude weapons that he could use to chase the zombies away and the suits that could barely do him any good in his hands.

Rufus raced as fast as his legs could literally carry him through the street, tearing through one zombie at a time.

He ignored the tears that were on his hands and the fact that blood flowed off from the wounds like it was a stream.

Getting to the building that Mia had emailed him, he could see that it was crawling with a dozen walkers.

His heart stomped violently against his rib cage, causing him to gasp in pain.

"Could it be that I am late already?" The violent beating continued.

At the moment, he could not even dare to think of such. His eyes were bloodshot, and he stabbed into each zombie, one at a time, with the picture of Mia on the front page of his mind.

It was a miracle that he wasn't dead yet when all the zombies were flat on the floor, their brains slumped and crushed, their eyes bulging from their sockets.

However, his life was barely put together. Rufus was bleeding from multiple points of his body, and he could only hope that he didn't pass out before he got Mia the suit.

If that was the last thing he did before he died, in his evolution, it was something worth dying for.

Rufus dragged his broken legs into the building, searching through every door. Until finally, he came to one slightly open, and stepping inside, he saw Mia. And she was fine.

A breath of relief and cold sweat poured down from Rufus's face. It was then that he noticed it.

Another hand was folded neatly into hers in a firm and intimate grip, almost like they were couples.

He looked down, and his eyes met with multiple clothes on the floor. His eyes paid closer attention to the underwear, especially the male ones.

A slight but violent throbbing sensation instantly tormented his heart, and his breath rushed out from his lungs as he looked up, slowly.

Rufus's gaze met with the smirk of another man, and his wife's, and somehow, even though he tried not to believe the ideas that were already brewing in his head, his heart dropped to the bottom of his stomach.

The smirk on Mia's face grew even wider seeing the expression that laced the face of the man who was supposed to be her husband.

She turned around to the middle-aged stranger, her head on his shoulder and his hands on her ass like he owned her.

"I told you that he was going to come running, sweeping to my rescue. I should introduce him to you.

This is Rufus, my personal special loyal dog; I prefer sly mutt, by the way!" she added with a chuckle that stabbed a hot rod right into Rufus's heart without the faintest trace of pity.

CHAPTER ELEVENCyra smiled gracefully, pleased that Rufus had shown interest in the quest. Her eyes brightened up with their glow, and she took two steps closer to Rufus, who stood still with his eyes staring at her.“The Island of Aeaea is located at the end of the ancient forest, far beyond the cursed mountains where the trolls lived. Circe chooses to live alone with her maidens where no mortal dares to trespass.”“Oh. That sounds far. How do I get there? Do you have a car or maybe a horse?” Rufus inquired anxiously, causing Cyra to chuckle instantly.“There are no cars here, Rufus. And the horses you speak of have all gone into hiding after the Mutants that came upon the forest.”“Oh,” Rufus mumbled in a little disappointment, and then he sighed heavily.“Worry not, Warlord. I know just the perfect means to get you there in no time.” Cyra said, igniting the sparkle of hope that was almost lost.“You might want to step back a bit.” She warned, but Rufus stood still, his mind harbor

Tina’s father, Lord Vincent, finally snapped."If your theory is correct," he rasped, his voice thin but still carrying authority, "then I am dead anyway."He coughed, black blood speckling his lips."So there is no harm in the stranger trying."The words cut through Tina's resolve. Her eyes widened. This was her father, the man who never let anyone beneath their status even speak to him directly."Father, you cannot be serious," she started, her voice shaking. "You do not even know who he is. He could be anyone. A cultist, a scavenger, a—""Enough!" Lord Vincent snapped, bringing her to a halt. The single word cracked like a whip. Tina's mouth closed instantly. She stood there, her fists clenched, her whole body trembling with rage and helplessness. But she could not push further. Even when she was in pain watching her father die slowly, she frowned at Rufus's audacity. Her eyes were red from crying but her face was twisted with the kind of anger that came from desperation. She looked at him like he was the most disgusting thing she had ever seen. With a grim look and an arrogant gaze, she told him what everyone already knew."There is no cure," she said, her voice sharp and cold. "Everyone knows that. Even the best doctors in the city have not been able to come up with one. The best doctors that work for the government, they have been trying for three years. Three whole years and nothing."She stepped closer, her eyes burning with disdain."So what makes you think you can even do anything? You must be a mad man.""It is not madness," he said quietly. "We conducted research in an underground lab, a small team working on ways to stop the virus before it reaches the brain. That is how I know it can still be done."Tina scoffed almost instantly. The sound came out

Rufus looked down at the trembling mutant bleeding against the wall."I am the one that is going to rid the world of this curse," he replied.Something flashed in his eyes as he said it. Not anger or pain or the hollow emptiness that had been eating him alive since he found Mia in another man's arms.Something that had no name yet but felt like power. The mutant saw it and trembled with so much fear, unlike anything that it had seen before. The creature had spent years being the thing that made humans scream and run. It had never been on the other side of that terror. It had never felt small and weak and completely helpless.Until now."The leaders," it muttered, its voice shaking badly. "The leaders have to know about you. You are trouble. You are something that should not exist. They need to know before you become..."Before he could finish, Rufus moved fast and delivered one final strike that crushed what was left of the mutant's skull against the broken tiles. The creature went s

Now he could control zombies just through his words and his thoughts. The silence in the room was thick and heavy.
