Sign The Papers

"If you have no objections, just sign here", Dennis' mother-in-law said mockingly, sliding the divorce papers on the table before him.

He frowned, tired of the grusome torture he called marriage, but still, he loved his wife dearly,

"What are you asking me to sign, mother-in-law?" He asked;

Margaret snapped, "Have I not warned you never to call me your mother-in-law again?!" She yelled and landed a slap on Dennis' face,

"Now you will sign these divorce papers and free my daughter from being with a weak, pathetic loser like you, or else, your life will be more pathetic than it already is", Margaret mocked and warned him sternly,

Margaret Luther was a woman who prided herself in wealth and status, and her daughter being married to a low life like Dennis was greatly unsettling.

"I'm glad my daughter is finally done with you" she mocked.

Dennis felt disappointed. He believed he had found his soulmate when he met Sasha, and was ready to settle, so they got married. Their marriage was seemingly great initially until the Luther family business fell in the rocks.

Seeing their struggle, Dennis secretly offered one million dollars to his wife’s family business to set it up again.

That was when everything changed. The Luther family ridiculed, insulted and treated him worse than a maid, especially as he was a live-in husband.

Now, he gently caressed the itching hotness of the slap on his cheek, turned his gaze to his mother-in-law and sneered,

"I agreed to divorce Sasha, but I will not do so without seeing her first and confirming that this is what she really wants", he said and Margaret cackled

"Do my ears deceive me, or does the useless thing think he has an opinion?" She exclaimed, looking at him scornfully,

"If Sasha wants to divorce me, then I want to hear her say it herself," Dennis retorted, struggling to maintain his composure.

"My daughter will do no such thing", Margaret protested.

"Don't you have any iota of sense, or are you just as poor in your mental facilities as well?",

"My daughter is a rich, classy businesswoman, desired by so many rich and high-class men in this city. Surely, she'll have no time to deal with a low-life like you",

"If you wanted to see Sasha, you would've made an appointment, or you think just because you're married that you can see her anytime you like?",

“May I remind you that you're nothing but a common peasant we've been enduring for three years?

You dare to make demands even as the only thing you've ever brought upon us is embarrassment", Margaret raged.

Dennis sneered. Since the death of his mother, the only person he felt the closest thing to love was his wife, Sasha.

But sitting before the divorce papers placed on the table, he realized that he was merely a tool to her.

“If she were against the divorce, she would have been here herself.” Dennis thought and realized he had lost another person he loved.

"How can you even call yourself a man when you can't provide for yourself? What good are you to my daughter?" Margaret raged, and Dennis felt the urge to lay claim to everything he had done for her, but he couldn’t break the promise he had made to avenge his mother, on her grave.

Revealing himself now would only foil his revenge plans against the people responsible for her death. He swallowed his hurt and shame.

Suddenly the door to the living room swung open, and Sasha walked in, elegantly and beautifully in a velvet dress.

At the sight of her, Dennis heaved a sigh of relief, “She still wants me after all!”

Yet, when he looked into her eyes, he only saw her disgust, disappointment and resentment towards him, and he knew immediately Sasha wasn’t there to take his side and this broke his heart.

"Enough!" She exclaimed with no ounce of love in her voice, her expression cold as she stared at him with no affection.

"Now that you've seen me. Sign the papers," Sasha said, her voice cold and emotionless.

Dennis clenched his fist tightly as he bared the humiliation and heartbreak from his wife and mother-in-law.

He said to his wife in a mocking tone, looking into her emerald eyes scornfully, "I stood with you and supported you when you had nothing, but now that you're the CEO, you throw me away like I'm trash?"

"I gave you all my time and love, but you don't even have time to finish your divorce. Why do I need to fix an appointment to see my wife?" His voice tinged with dismay and regret.

However, Sasha's demeanour was still cold as she gazed at him unaffectionately

"Dennis…" she tried to speak but found no words to console him; her mind was already made up.

Soon after her business boomed, Sasha's beauty and status attracted many rich and powerful men to her, and they all bowed at her feet like a beauty goddess, seeking her hand in marriage.

Being married to Dennis was damaging to her profile, and she grew to resent her useless husband and immediately sought a divorce.

"If this is about money, I can pay you. If you want a house, a car, we can arrange everything for you. That would make up for the time you've spent with me," Sasha said coldly, and her mother interjected,

"Money? Why would we do anything for this loser when he hasn't done anything for us besides be a stench to our status and continue to prove himself as a useless and pathetic man" Margaret’s snide remarks pierced Dennis' heart.

He sneered, with pain in his eyes. He had hoped to find solace in his mother-in-law since his mother, the only family he had died. But Margaret had always hated, insulted, abused and despised him since he got married to her daughter, they all did, but still, he held on to hope of being loved someday.

"Is that what you think of me? That all I want is money, houses?" Dennis retorted

"I only ever wanted your love," He said painfully, staring at Sasha

"But you think that marriage is a trade, and you can just pay me off for the past three years I've spent loving you, right?",

"Are you so obsessed with money that you will give up on us?!" Dennis asked, hoping that his words would make his wife reconsider the divorce, but she stared at him coldly with disdain,

"Of course, everything is about money! Everything is a trade, including our marriage and love."

"If you wanted things to be different, you would've worked on being someone deserving of love instead of the broke loser you are now."

"How can I love someone poor like you?!"

"I want you to know that this is exactly why I'm leaving you", Sasha spoke coldly, but deep inside, she wished Dennis could be different, could be wealthy. Everything would be different.

But he was not, and so she couldn’t be with him,

“We are over. Sign the papers,” Sasha said as she walked out on him.
