The fluorescent lights in the interrogation room cast harsh shadows across Victoria's face, stripping away the carefully crafted glamour she usually wore like armor. Her Hermès blouse, now wrinkled from hours in custody, seemed harshly out of place against the stark metal table.

Zhang placed a thick folder on the table with deliberate slowness.

"Let's start with Ray Alvarez." He began, shooting daggers at her.

"I have nothing to say about that unfortunate incident," Victoria replied, her voice steady despite her circumstances. "As I've stated publicly and vehemently, his death was a tragic accident."

Marcus stepped out of the corner of the room, a cold smile playing at his lips.

"Show her, Detective."

Zhang pulled out a series of photographs, laying them methodically before her. Security camera stills showing Landon Keller entering Ray's office. Bank statements documented transfers from shell companies. Text messages between Victoria and Keller flickered on a tablet screen. Almost

Marcus's penthouse apartment glowed warmly against the darkening city skyline. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking view of the twinkling lights below, so different from the harsh fluorescents of the courthouse and police station where he'd spent most of his days while he was trying to put his enemies behind bars. The dining room table was set with fine china and crystal glasses that caught and scattered the light from the modern chandelier above. Next to him sat his trusted friends and business associates. "To justice," Marcus raised his glass of wine, looking around at the intimate gathering of friends who had become something like family during the long battle against Victoria Wong and her cohorts. Detective Zhang, Sarah Martinez, Derek Zhao, and Lori all lifted their glasses in response, the echo of the glass filling their ears as they clinked them together."I still can't believe it's really over," Lori said, shaking her head with a smile. She'd been Marcus' assis

Marcus leaned back in his leather armchair, gazing out the floor-to-ceiling windows of his corner office, his desk left unattended as he watched the people below move around like ants without a purpose. The city skyline stretched before him, a testament to the heights he'd reached. A far cry from how his life was almost a year ago. Five months of unprecedented success had gone by, transforming him from a promising newbie in the business world into a formidable leader. His acquisition of all the Wong and Parker companies had gone smoothly—almost too smoothly as Victoria’s incarceration had helped move the mind of her boards—and now Marcus found himself at the helm of three thriving enterprises. Three enterprises apart from Rivera Technologies. Not only that but Marcus had gone into another venture with his business partner Derek Zhao. A venture that was shaping up to be a big hit soon. Marcus sighed and got up from his armchair, going back to his work station. His fingers traced the

The restaurant Marcus arrived at was he and Derek’s regular haunt. An exclusive establishment where the waiters knew their preferences and the sommelier had their favorite wines memorized. Derek was already there when Marcus arrived, nursing a glass of bordeaux and reviewing something on his tablet."There he is!" Derek stood to greet him, his enthusiasm infectious as always when he laid eyes on a somewhat sully Marcus. "You're going to flip when you hear what the R&D team came up with."“What’s going on?” Marcus asked, feigning interest as he took his seat from across Derek. A waiter arrived, placing Marcus’ usual in front of him without asking a question more and then disappearing.“So, the team came up with this software that allows us to tag our clients and trace their preferences by their online presence. I mean it sounds like stalking but that’s just the basis of it. The rest of—” Derek droned off while Marcus stayed distracted, his responses delayed as his mind was clearly else

The car ride was spent in silence between both of them till the car came to a stop in front of a gate made of gold. Just the gate seemed more expensive than the entire Wong mansion. Marcus’ own even. As they approached the gate, Eric pressed a button to open the outer gate, signalling that the mansion had a visitor. As they got to the security post, it spoke. It was an AI gate and only really wealthy people could afford them. Marcus had contemplated getting one but decided against it. “Please identify yourself.” The gate said as Eric rolled down the window to speak.“Eric Wei.”“Voice recognition, success. Welcome, Mr Wei.”The inner gates opened automatically and Marcus' eyes widened . Calling it a mansion did not do it justice as it looked more like a luxury estate. He had money but this was far over the top. Extremely so. How could one person own all this? Streetlights lined the driveway, and each of them were made of gold, not gold paint, real solid gold. It took almost ten minut

“When you were still a child, almost two years old, you were taken from us. I had just started making good money back then, my company was flourishing and I got arrogant. I was warned by my father, your grandfather, not to take a particular deal that an older rival company was vying for but I didn’t listen. I felt like I could take them on because I had already achieved so much at a young age. After successfully getting the project started, we threw a party to celebrate the success of the project launch. Your mother and I were in attendance while you were home with your nanny. We couldn’t take you that day because you weren’t feeling well. When we came home that day, you were gone. Our home had been invaded by armed men, they killed all the security guards and the house staff. We searched everywhere but couldn’t find you, then I received a call shortly after. The CEO of that rival company called me and told me that he was responsible for your kidnapping. He wanted me to know that he w

The trio now sat in the living room with all eyes on Marcus. It was unnerving being in such a foreign place and having all this information forced down his throat but when Micah led him to the living room and asked him to tell them how he survived on his own for years, Marcus didn’t think to hesitate.“Long story short, I grew up at an orphanage. No family wanted me so by the age of eighteen I was thrown out to fend for myself. Luckily for me, I managed to get a scholarship to go to college since the orphanage helped us through highschool and all that. It was mostly due to funding from some NGO but it helped. I went to a no name school and learned architecture. I graduated with a high enough GPA for me to land a job at a big company at the time. Wong Facilities.” Marcus explained, his eye catching Eric’s stoic face turned into a frown. It seemed like he already knew the story. After all, he was the one who found Marcus in the first place. Still, Marcus continued. From what he had lea

News reporters and every form of entertainment press stood outside the Wei Conglomerate building with flashing cameras and mics hoping to get a glimpse or even a notable speech from the men that called them out that day. The crowd stretched far beyond the building's perimeter, their excitement palpable in the morning air.Marcus and his father, Micah stepped out from the building and onto the podium that stood atop the steps of the building and overlooked the crowd that formed on their property. Eric and Marcus' secretary Lori, who he had flown out to meet up with him, stood beside them as Marcus and Micah stood side by side smiling at the crowd. Marcus couldn't help but notice how similar their postures were – both straight-backed and commanding, though his father carried decades more experience in his bearing. Truth be told Marcus knew nothing about why he stood beside his father. He only knew that he was going to be announced as the next heir since the paternity test had been carr

The next morning after the big press conference, Marcus was surprised when he was woken up early by Eric. He had been expecting to be woken up that early like the day before especially when the week had ended. “It's the weekend, Eric, why are you waking me up so early?” Marcus asked as he yawned and stretched in bed. Eric chuckled as he pulled the blinds away, letting the light flood into the room. “You of all people should know that you must not be the heir in words only. You have to at least have basic knowledge of your father’s business if you are to inherit it all from him. I know that you already know how to run a company but what your father owns is far bigger than that, so we need to teach you some important things if only you’re willing to learn. Knowledge is power after all.” Eric replied, standing to the side. “Can’t we start later?” Marcus asked, groaning. Why was this necessary? “You need to get used to waking early even here, Marcus. It will be a normal routine for y

If it was an animation movie, smoke would be coming out of his ears and his face would be perpetually red but it wasn’t and all that could be seen was the gritting of his teeth and the reddening of the tip of his ears. He huffed as Callum tried to keep up with his pace as they walked through the hallway. “Calm down Marcus. Don’t let him get to you.” Callum spoke.“He won’t.” Marcus hissed under his breath. “Then why are you rushing down the halls?” Callum asked as he stopped Marcus in place by grabbing his arm. Marcus turned to face him, his breathing becoming even but his face betraying his emotions. “We have to get the testimonies of the other men, don’t we?” Marcus asked back.Callum let go of his arm and sighed.“We do but I don’t think you should be involved anymore, not if you’re going to be so high strung from just seeing your own uncle.”“Detective…” Marcus started to argue but Callum raised h

Why was he so adamant with this? Why couldn’t he just be good and love his family? It was unnerving to say the least. “Save your words. We’ve caught you here. Nothing you say will get you out of this one.” Marcus hissed at him, disappointment etched on his face. “No. Hold on! You don’t understand. These men…” Eric shouted out in a bid to halt the imminent arrest but Marcus cut him off. “These men what? Do you think anything you say will be believed?” Marcus questioned.Eric pointed to the men with a wild look in his eyes, his words carefully planned out.“These men called me here through an unknown number. He got out of his car and went into the mansion with a small smile on his face. Due to the plan, he already had formulating in his brain he was oblivious to the man who stood in front of him with a sneer on his face. Once he noticed the man, he stopped and exchanged looks. Eric stood in front of him, his arms crossed and a frown on his face. “Uncle.” Marcus said under his breath. “Nephew. • Chapter One Hundred and Ten: DOUBLECROSS

While his family had gone back home, Marcus had gone straight to the somewhat abandoned motel where Lori’s family had been kept hostage with his men in tow. He had called some of his personal guards to follow him to the location just in case green eyes or his men had alternative ideas to the meeting he had also called them about. He hadn’t cared to learn their names. It was not worth his time to be honest. He waited for some time before he could hear the purring of a car that was coming into view and pulling up to the parking lot of the building. The men from before, got down from the car, each of them giving Marcus some sort of stink eye because of the men he had standing behind him before they stepped forward and acknowledged him.“Wei. I see you brought some men with you to our meeting. Now, why would you do that?” Green eyes spoke.Marcus shrugged.“I might have you on my payroll but it doesn’t necessarily mean that I trust any one of you. These men are what you call an insurance

  • Chapter One Hundred and Nine: HIDDEN INTENTIONS

Marcus, Rachel, Micah and Elias got down from their respective cars and walked into the precinct where the evidence Marcus had promised was waiting in Coleman’s safe of personally kept evidence. Marcus looked around to make sure that they weren’t being watched and when he was sure that the coast was clear he entered into the building with the rest of his family. Some officers stood up at the mere sight of almost all the Wei family entering the precinct. It had never happened. At least, not after they had been here asking for help to find their son Marcus in the past. It was a rare sight as most of them knew that this family liked to handle their businesses on their own most times and if they were all here at the same time then something wrong was going on. The officers greeted them as they walked by and as Marcus led them straight to Eric Coleman’s office. The same man his uncle had introduced him to.“Who is it?” Coleman shouted out as he heard a rap on his door. The door opened up

Marcus had made the necessary arrangements to have Lori and her family relocated abroad. He also had his mind set on sending Rachel with them after his encounter with his uncle the afternoon of the kidnapping, but Rachel had opted to stay back and she was adamant about it. He sighed as he sat down in his office as he wondered why she was being so stubborn and wouldn’t allow him to protect her. Oh, that’s right, he already knew why. She had already told him her reasons but still she had to know that she was in danger because his uncle would do anything to get to him. He couldn’t have her still in the house with that man.Apart from sending Lori to safety and having a mild fight with Rachel about taking her to safety also, the police; specifically, Eric, the chief and Callum the detective had done their part in contacting the officers in Italy to help them with the security issue. “Another thing. I need that laptop back. It’s important that I get it back.” Marcus said as he turned back to the smirking men, wanting to get one thing straight. That laptop was still important. One of them shook his head. “We can’t. We still need to get paid by our previous employer.” He said, a small sneer forming on his face. “Do you still want me to pay you or do you want nothing?” Marcus slightly threatened. “What do we tell him when he asks?” Green eyes asked. Marcus rolled his eyes as he couldn’t believe that these men were able to kidnap people in broad daylight and not be caught but can’t lie to save their own lives. It was truly unbelievable. It was a let down. “Tell him that you got the evidence and destroyed it. As for me, let him know that you couldn’t kill me. I went straight to the police while the girls came over here and did the exchange themselves. Those green eyes stared back at Marcus, Rachel and Lori menacing and ready to pounce. The man who Marcus could see clearly now, smirked at him, taunting him with that sly grin. Marcus had a feeling that this meeting was probably going to end up with someone dead since the man was purposefully going to kill him before. He could smell the bloodlust from the man.“Calm down. I’m not here to kill you. We need to take care of this business first and then I can finally end your life maybe later.” The green-eyed man spoke out, placing one hand on his waist. “Who ordered you to do this?” Marcus asked, getting a bit on edge as the man and his two partners edged closer to them.“Who ordered me to do what exactly? I have a lot of employers.” He retorted, toying with Marcus. “You know what I mean. Who asked you to kidnap those people and try to kill me?” Marcus asked him more clearly, not in the mood for fun and games. The green-eyed man waved his hands in the air.“Whoa, whoa, whoa. I’m not h

  • Chapter One Hundred and Five: GREEN EYES

Marcus left the mansion in a hurry with the new found knowledge that his uncle had been watching him. It irked him as he got into his car wondering how long Eric's spying had been going on. He knew that there were cameras at every inch of the mansion but he didn’t think that his uncle would be keeping such a close eye on him. Now that Lori's family had been taken by Eric, of that he was sure, he had no choice but to turn in the evidence that they had just uncovered. It was annoying that Callum was right to say the least, but he couldn't risk having anything bad happen, especially to Lori's little brother. She would never recover from that and he would blame himself explicitly. Marcus swerved through the streets trying to decide whether to go to the police station and tell Callum what had just happened or to go straight to a place he knew could disable the cameras of his prying uncle without being noticed. As he made his next turn he noticed that a car turned with him. It wouldn't ha
