It was almost 10 p.m. at the university’s athletics center. The boys’ basketball team had just finished training, sweat still shining on their skin as they sprawled across the bleachers, joking and arguing over who would win the next inter-campus championship.

Then suddenly, the locker room door flew open and someone rushed in anxiously, “Guys! You won’t believe this—Evan Marshall is confessing to Ava Hart on SportStream Live! They’re broadcasting it right now on the school account!”

Immediately, almost the entire team rushed to him, crowding around his phone in excitement. Evan Marshall was the captain of the football team, national youth star, son of a billionaire sports mogul, and Ava Hart was a track queen and campus beauty who was loved by the whole school.

Of course, everyone wanted to see it.

But Lorenzo Sinclair didn't move. He sat alone on the bottom bench, untying his worn-out shoes, sweat still dripping from his neck. His jersey was old, his gym bag patched in three places, and his handsome face was tired and... on the ground.

A 21-year-old scholarship athlete, Orphan working night shifts at a local gym just to survive. He barely had enough money to pay for food, let alone new gear. Most students saw him as “the poor kid who could play ball.”

But Ava…

He thought she saw more.

They met when he worked maintenance at the athletics center. She forgot her water bottle during practice, and he returned it. They started talking, and he fell in love with her. He spent eight months loving her, saving every penny to take her out, doing everything to make her feel special and loved.

She reciprocated the energy too, and everything was going fine. Although, she said she wanted to keep the relationship private because she liked her love life, family life, and important aspects of her life private.

At first, he hesitated, but later on, he began to understand from her side of view.

He wiped the tears that were falling from his eyes with the back of his hands, after remembering what Ava had done to him.

Yesterday, he had caught her cheating with that same Evan guy. He had gone to surprise her after practice, carrying the small box of earrings he had saved three months to buy. He wanted to celebrate her qualifying for nationals. But the moment he opened the door to the private training room, he froze.

Ava was sitting on Evan’s arms and kissing him while Evan’s hands caressed her thighs. And when she saw him standing there, she didn’t even look guilty.

She looked at him, and the coldness in her eyes cut deeper than any words could.

“Lorenzo… what are you doing here?” she asked, her voice clipped, almost annoyed and disgusted by his presence.

He opened his mouth to speak, to demand an explanation, to scream that she had no right—but the words stuck in his throat.

Evan laughed lightly, as his hand brushed Ava’s hair back from her face. “Who is this?” he asked really irritated but Ava ignored

Lorenzo’s fists clenched so tight that his knuckles turned white. The box of earrings felt like it weighed a ton in his hand, each small bead a reminder of all he had given, all he had loved, all he had sacrificed.

“Stop lying,” he whispered, his voice hoarse. “Why would you do this? Why would you betray me?"

Ava sighed, rolling her eyes before standing to her feet, “Lorenzo, I… I never said you were my boyfriend. We are nothing!!"

Ava said, and that tore Lorenzo’s heart completely. He never imagined that after eight months of being together she considered him nothing.

“Nothing?” Lorenzo’s voice cracked, the word catching in his throat like broken glass. “After everything… you call me nothing?”

"Everything? Babe, who the heck is this peasant!!" Evan said, stepping closer to Lorenzo.

He had felt disgusted that a man of Lorenzo’s caliber would dare talk to someone like Ava, someone who clearly belonged to a world far beyond his reach. Evan’s smirk was infuriating, like a knife twisting in Lorenzo’s chest.

“I… I don’t understand,” Lorenzo managed, his voice trembling. “Eight months… I worked, I saved, I cared for you. And this is how you repay me?”

Ava didn’t even flinch. “Repay you? You were never anything to me, Lorenzo. I never asked for your… sympathy. You weren’t enough. Do you even think that I would really date someone as poor as you?” she spat with venom.

Lorenzo’s knees felt weak, like the floor had disappeared beneath him. The gym filled with laughter from Evan and Ava, but all Lorenzo could hear was the hammering of his own heart, breaking in slow, painful pieces.

The earrings slipped from his fingers, scattering across the floor. He didn’t even notice; his mind was frozen, trapped in a whirlwind of betrayal and disbelief.

Evan stepped closer, smirking like a predator. “You’re pathetic, man. Chasing someone who wouldn’t even look at you twice. Don’t worry, though, she belongs with someone who actually matters.”

Ava turned away, flipping her hair over her shoulder, as if to punctuate his humiliation while Lorenzo watched them leave.

Now... sitting in the locker room, surrounded by teammates cheering over Evan’s flashy confession, those memories came crashing down on him like a tidal wave.

“Bro! Ava is crying.... look!”

“Evan kneeled!”

"Aww"

"This is sweet"

“She said yes! She actually said yes!”

The room was filled with screams and excitement as everyone was smiling.

Except Lorenzo, who isolated himself and was barely noticed.

He slowly stood up from where he was seated. He didn’t want to watch the live, neither did he want to be around anyone. The noise, the laughter, the cheering… it felt like needles stabbing into fresh wounds.

He reached for his patched-up gym bag, slung it over his shoulder with a shaky breath. His vision blurred again, but he blinked fast, refusing to let another tear fall in front of people who didn’t even know he was breaking.

He left the locker room quietly and walked toward the back of the athletics center—the old, abandoned bleachers behind the gym where no one ever went. That was his spot. The one place he could breathe.

He sat down heavily, his elbows on his knees, staring at the cracked concrete beneath his feet. The night air was cold, brushing against his skin, grounding him. He just wanted ten minutes—ten minutes to let the ache settle without being reminded of her face.

But he barely got that.

Then he heard heavy footsteps approach. And before he knew it, he saw three big-built men step out from behind the pillars, their shadows long under the dim campus lights. One who seemed to be the boss cracked his knuckles loudly while another rolled his shoulders like he was warming up.

Lorenzo stiffened.

“Who are you?” he asked, pushing himself to his feet slowly.

The tallest one smirked. “Relax, kid. We were sent to teach you a lesson.”

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened. “A lesson…?" he asked in fear, "From who?”

The man shrugged. “Rich boy’s orders. Said you needed to learn your place.”

The speaker dared not utter another word as he cautiously sat back in his seat.Lorenzo no longer concerned himself with that man. After all, he knew the people gambling here were much poorer than him. Their combined assets would not even amount to a fraction of his wealth. There was no way Lorenzo would waste his time on such people. Hence, he promptly placed his black bank card with the letter “R” onto the table. The manager’s brows furrowed. “I know many people worship Byers Group. Since you know of the Byers family, I’m sure you’re also aware of the family’s social status. In having this bet against me, I hope you understand that a measly person like you cannot survive the wrath of our casino or the Byers.”“Don’t forget what you’re saying to me now,” Lorenzo responded, his voice devoid of emotion while he glanced at his watch. Then, he placed his card onto the scanner.A second passed before the machinery let out a beep of approval and flashed a green light.Everyone around them

The manager cautiously shot a sideways smirk at Lorenzo before lowering her head. “My apologies, but I can’t recognize the brand of his clothes as it doesn’t seem well known. However, his clothes do look expensive.” Lorenzo could tell the former’s tone was full of mockery. That was when a confident voice said on the other end of the call, “If an article of clothing has no brand, it must be a custom piece. I doubt someone that capable would show up at our casino. Likewise, there’s no way this poor little boy would ever be acquainted with someone so wealthy.” The situation seemed like a joke to Lorenzo, who kept silent the entire time and kept his hands in his pockets. Even so, his frosty eyes sent chills down everyone’s spines. Lorenzo eventually reached out to knock on the table twice before retorting, “Aren’t I supposed to grant your business more wealth through my patronage? Why did no one welcome me? Instead, you left me out here alone. Is this how your fancy casino treats its c

The expression on Lorenzo's face showed the seriousness of his feelings. The woman's face changed. She had lost control of herself when she saw the card. She recognized this card! Everyone had to recognize this card during pre-employment training so they could serve the Byers Family better. She had fantasized about earning a chance to enter the Byers Family, and then she would become Mrs. Byers. But she couldn't believe that the man she had been waiting for for so long had been insulted to the point of anger by her. She stood stiffly, with only her eyes still able to move, staring at the card and wondering how she could salvage the situation. Lorenzo, however, put the card back into his pocket. "Now, can I get in?" The woman saw the expression on Lorenzo's face and still found herself unable to accept it. As Lorenzo walked toward the casino doors, she suddenly screamed, "Stop! You liar! I know who you are, and you can't go in!" After saying that, she ran in front of Lorenzo

Lorenzo did not know what the people behind him were thinking. All he knew was that he had already been delayed for far too long, and Martins was still waiting for his help. Rumors said that the casinos in Nevada were terrifying places. The people there could kill without blinking, remaining expressionless even if blood splashed into their mouths. The moment Lorenzo stepped onto the ground, he immediately quickened his pace and rushed forward. The two pilots, a man and a woman, hurried after him. Meanwhile, the poor security guard remained kneeling on the ground, staring in shock as Lorenzo’s figure disappeared into the distance. His lips trembled violently as he slowly stood and staggered back to his post. On the other side, Lorenzo exited the airport in Nevada. Unlike ordinary places, the area outside the airport was filled with casinos instead of restaurants or stores. There wasn’t a single taxi in sight, and neither of the pilots could find one either. After wait

He took out his phone and called Derek. “I want to know if my friend was threatened at Nevada” “Sir, I have investigated it clearly, but the master thinks it would be better to find out by yourself when you arrive there.” He did not understand his grandfather’s intention. He hung up the phone and continued to read the documents. Then, he saw the name on the document that made him furious. ‘Crestmont Capital Group.’ Lorenzo's fist gradually turned as hard as stone, and the tone of his voice was no longer calm. “...You better pray that this matter has nothing to do with you, Victor Kingsley, or else you will definitely regret it for the rest of your life!” Just as the words left his mouth, he heard his pilot’s voice. “Sir, we will be landing in three minutes, so please get ready.” Enzo put the teacup back, sat on the sofa, and closed his eyes. The plane landed smoothly, and the door opened quickly. Lorenzo looked at the green grass and frowned. “What is this place?

The urgent ringing of the phone interrupted his thoughts.Lorenzo frowned. He had a bad feeling about it.The moment he picked up the call, Martin's voice came through the receiver. The man sounded as though he was on the verge of tears."I know I shouldn't talk about this, especially to you. You only have enough money to live a normal life, but I really, really need your help."Lorenzo only had a few friends, and Martin was one of them. The man had helped him when he was hospitalized and had even paid part of his medical bills. Without Martin's assistance, he might never have survived long enough to meet his grandfather."Where are you, Martin? How much do you need?"Before Martin could answer, a rough voice suddenly came from the other end of the line."You sound just as stupid as your friend. Are you really as rich as he claims? You'll need a lot of money if you want him back. Or perhaps I can sell him overseas and make even more."The man burst into laughter.Lorenzo's expression
