Chapter 001
It was almost 10 p.m. at the university’s athletics center. The boys’ basketball team had just finished training, sweat still shining on their skin as they sprawled across the bleachers, joking and arguing over who would win the next inter-campus championship. Then suddenly, the locker room door flew open and someone rushed in anxiously, “Guys! You won’t believe this—Evan Marshall is confessing to Ava Hart on SportStream Live! They’re broadcasting it right now on the school account!” Immediately, almost the entire team rushed to him, crowding around his phone in excitement. Evan Marshall was the captain of the football team, national youth star, son of a billionaire sports mogul, and Ava Hart was a track queen and campus beauty who was loved by the whole school. Of course, everyone wanted to see it. But Lorenzo Sinclair didn't move. He sat alone on the bottom bench, untying his worn-out shoes, sweat still dripping from his neck. His jersey was old, his gym bag patched in three
Chapter 002
Before Lorenzo could react, the first blow landed hard against his stomach, knocking the air from his lungs. He doubled over, only to be yanked back up by his collar and hit again—this time, a vicious punch across his jaw that sent him to the ground. He felt excruciating pain in his ribs as a boot struck him again and again. Blood filled his mouth, and he spat it out, tasting the bitterness and feeling his consciousness slipping away from him with each blow. Through the haze, he could hear their laughter and mockery. “Did you really think she’d stay with someone like you?” another man jeered as he landed a kick to Lorenzo’s side, making him grunt in pain. “You’re nothing but a loser, just a worthless user.” As Lorenzo was slipping into unconsciousness, he heard an unfamiliar voice cut through. “Get away from him, or I’m calling the police!” It was sharp, firm, and laced with authority. The men froze momentarily, startled by the sudden interruption. They hadn't expected any int
Chapter 003
Lorenzo sat on the hospital bench outside the ward. The cold air slapped his face, but he didn’t seem to pay much attention to it. His mind was on what Evan had told him today. After the unjust beating he had received from Evan, he still had to speak gently to him so he wouldn’t get him expelled from school. A sigh escaped his lips. What had he done to deserve this? Why couldn’t he just be born like other children with a golden spoon in their mouths? His chest felt heavy. He looked up at the heavens and saw the moon shining brightly from where he was seated. “Why can't I be like other children?” he murmured softly, still looking up at the sky. How great it would be for him to be rich—just like them—so he wouldn’t be treated like trash. His mind went to Ava, his beautiful girl whom he had lost to Evan. Lorenzo knew that Evan was clearly not as attractive or good-looking as he was, but all the girls wanted him because of how rich he was. If only he were that rich! He sighed.
Chapter 004
Lorenzo, upon seeing the man’s act, impulsively wenr on his knees, and as he was about to bow to him too, the man looked up and exclaimed: “Sir, are you trying to kill me? Why would you want to stain… yourself by… by—” he said, standing up as quickly as possible and helping Lorenzo to his feet. Lorenzo, still staring at him, asked in shock, “Sir, I don't know what this is all about, but please don’t get me expelled.” He cried. Lorenzo had no idea what was going on or happening; however, he felt that the person might somehow be associated with Evan and that his education — the most important thing — was on the line. The man looked at Lorenzo, puzzled. “No! No! Sir,” he said, gesturing with his hands to convince him. “I am not trying to get you expelled. On the contrary, I want you to come with me to meet someone very important. He sent me to bring you to him, sir,” the man said confidently. The man, whose name was Derek, kept his eyes locked on Lorenzo’s face. There was no do
Chapter 005
The door opened and Lorenzo and Derek stepped quietly into the bedroom. The room was large, softly lit, and surprisingly simple for someone of such status. There was a wide bed at the center, neatly arranged, and lying on it was a man who looked far too fragile for the power he once commanded. A faint smell of medicine hung in the air. A few pillows were propped behind the man’s back, and a small table beside him held a glass of water and some folded towels. Lorenzo had imagined someone fierce, someone whose presence alone would shake the room. Instead, he found an old man who looked like he could barely lift his head. As Lorenzo stood there taking everything in, the man on the bed also studied him with tired eyes. He blinked slowly, as if making sure the visitor wasn’t a figure from a dream. His gaze moved from Lorenzo’s shoes to his face, and there was a hint of recognition or maybe hope. A moment later, the door behind Lorenzo closed softly. He walked toward the bed and bowed
Chapter 006
Lorenzo stared at the man in shock, his heart pounded so hard it felt like it might crack through his ribs. He was completely and painfully lost as the weight of everything unfolding pressed on him like a collapsing world. His mouth opened, then closed again. No words came out. None existed for the kind of truth that shattered a life in one breath. “I…” he tried, but his voice failed him. The old man’s face softened with grief, not impatience. He looked at Lorenzo as if every second he had left depended on this moment. “Lorenzo,” he whispered again, “I know this is overwhelming,” the man said. “But you have to be ready for this.” The man let out a weak cough, one that rattled painfully in his chest. Derek immediately stepped forward, placing a steadying hand on the old man’s shoulder, but the old man lifted a trembling hand to stop him. “I’m fine… let me speak,” he whispered hoarsely. He wasn’t fine. Anyone could see that. His breaths were shallow and his cheeks were drain
Chapter 007
Lorenzo sat at the balcony, staring into space. He had just signed the papers hours ago; he still couldn’t believe any of it. The night was quiet except for the steady sound of rain hitting the tiles. The air was cold, but he didn’t feel it. His mind was too full. He leaned back and let out a slow breath. Everything felt heavy. Just a few hours ago, he had been betrayed by the love of his life, beaten up, and now—he owned a lot of properties, companies, and was the grandson of Adrian Byers? His chest tightened a little. He ran his hand through his hair and closed his eyes for a moment, trying to steady himself. The soft rain was the only thing calming his soul at the moment. After a while, he heard footsteps behind him. “Lorenzo.” He opened his eyes but didn’t turn. He didn’t have to. Judging by the voice, it was Derek. Derek stepped onto the balcony, stopping a short distance away. “Your grandfather wants to see you again.” Lorenzo didn’t move immediately. Instead, he j
Chapter 008
Lorenzo woke up from his king-sized bed on a Sunday morning. He pulled the curtains off the window in order to allow the fresh rays of the sun to stream into the room. He had never slept so comfortably as he did today. He had slept on a succulent, king-sized bed with a rich bank account; his heart couldn’t be more at peace. He took a long, refreshing shower, admiring the luxurious and exquisite interior design in the bathroom. Yesterday, he had gone to the garage along with Derek to pick the top five cars of his choice, which would be his mode of transportation to school. He had gone to the garage expecting seventy luxurious cars, like his grandfather had estimated; however, when he got there, he could roughly count a total sum of one hundred and twenty cars of different designs—sleek supercars, armored SUVs, vintage classics, and machines he had only ever seen on magazine covers. Lorenzo had frozen at the entrance, overwhelmed. Derek, on the other hand, had looked amused.
Chapter 009
Lorenzo hailed a cab, and in due time, he got to his school. As soon as he entered the school dormitory, he saw his friends Evan and… pacing around the room in worry. "I think I have gotten enough patience. I am calling the police!" Evan said anxiously. "You... you can't do that yet, Evan. What if Lorenzo just needed space? We never understand how deep these events must have hurt him. Maybe he needs space from everyone, including us. Wait a few more hours, let’s not rush it," Jayson said. Jayson’s voice was calmer, but the tension in his shoulders gave him away. He kept glancing at the door every few seconds, as if willing it to open. Evan stopped pacing and ran a hand through his hair. “It’s been days, Jayson. Days. No calls. No texts. Nothing. That’s not just space.” Before Jayson could respond, Lorenzo pulled the door open. Both of them froze as soon as they saw Lorenzo walk in with his backpack slung over one shoulder, his movements hesitant—as though he wasn’t sure he w
Chapter 010
Lorenzo walked out of the lecture hall in a happy mood. He had slept so well the previous night, knowing that he was an heir to a legacy. He didn't have to struggle with bills and money anymore; he was super rich now. He looked at his watch and realized that it was just nine thirty A.M., and he was done with all his lectures for the day. The old Lorenzo usually loved days like this so he could take on multiple shifts for the rest of the day, but now, there was nothing of such. His stomach rumbled, reminding him that it was time for breakfast. A slow smile spread across his face as he pulled out his phone. If he was going to have breakfast, it wouldn’t be at the greasy diner across campus or the cheap café where he used to stretch one cup of coffee for hours. It was time to eat at his own company, which the Byers had been sponsoring for a long time. What a perfect day to eat at the great Maison Noir. He decided to walk to Maison Noir, which was opposite his school, to eat b
