âYoung Master, are you finally willing to come home?â
Adrian looked around the bedroom he had considered home for the past three years. What a terrible mistake that had been.
âI havenât made up my mind yet.â He ended the call. He had already packed all his belongings the night before.
Just as he was about to leave, his phone rang again. An unknown number flashed across the screen. Adrian answered the call.
âHello, Mr. Adrian? Your mother-in-law has been involved in a serious car accident and is now in critical condition in the ICU!â
The panicked voice of a nurse from St. Jude Memorial Hospital instantly rooted Adrian to the spot.
âMr. Adrian, can you hear me?â the nurse called out.
âYes. I'll be there immediately.â
Belinda was the only person in his wife's family who had ever treated him like a human being. His mother-in-law loved him like her own son, always defending him whenever Chloe treated him coldly and serving him warm meals when others sneered at his status as a son-in-law living off his wife's family. Although his relationship with Chloe was on the brink of collapse, Adrian couldn't forget Belinda's kindness.
Adrian hurried toward the exit. Just then, the doorknob turned. Chloe had just returned and stepped into the hallway, with Julian following close behind.
âWhere are you going?â she asked.
âMumâs had an accident and is in hospital now. Youâd better come with me straight away," Adrian said quickly. His voice was flat, without any outward display of emotion, but his eyes remained fixed on his wife's.
Chloe clicked her tongue and waved dismissively without breaking stride. âDon't use such a clichĂ© excuse just to get my attention, Adrian. Besides, work is incredibly busy right now. I don't have time for your games. Make breakfast for Julian and me before you leave.â
âDo I look like I'm joking?â Adrian interrupted, suppressing the turmoil in his chest.
Chloe let out a long sigh, as though she were exhausted by Adrian. âAt least I'm not making up ridiculous excuses just to get someone's attention.â
Julian stepped forward with a look of feigned concern. âChloe, if Mum really is in hospital, let Adrian go. Even though I've just arrived and I'm still tired from the trip, I don't want to take up his time. What if Mumâs condition really does take a turn for the worse?"
Adrian clenched his fists. âShut your mouth, Julian. Did you just pray that Mumâs condition would get worse?"?â
Julian took a step back, wearing an innocent, apologetic expression. âI'm sorry, Adrian. I was only considering the worst-case scenario. Don't be angry with me. I didn't mean it that way.â
âAdrian! Why are you yelling at Julian?â Chloe snapped, immediately stepping in to defend him. âHe was just speaking reasonably and considering the worst-case scenario. Why are you getting so worked up?â
âSo you don't want to come with me?â Adrian asked, struggling to contain his anger. His sharp gaze made Chloe pause for a moment.
âOnce I've taken care of my business,â she replied curtly.
âMum is dying.â Adrian deliberately emphasized the word dying, hoping to stir some feeling in her. Yet Chloe merely maintained her usual impassive expression.
âYour mother will be fine.â
Adrian scoffed. âNobodyâs talking about my mum. What I mean is..."
âEnough, Adrian!â Chloe interrupted, glaring at him in irritation. âMake breakfast first. Then you can leave!â
Adrian stared at Chloe for a moment, as though he no longer recognized the woman before him. He couldn't understand how her mind worked.
âDo it yourself,â he said wearily.
âWhat?â Chloe glared at him.
âI know you're not deaf,â Adrian replied sharply.
For a moment, Chloe was stunned. Was he actually refusing her?
âWarming up bread and milk doesn't even take five minutes, Adrian. Stop making a scene! Isn't making breakfast your job?â
Adrian stared at her intently. A faint, humorless smile appeared at the corner of his lips.
âThat's right. I've been the one taking care of everything all this time. I guess I've been doing it for so long that you've forgotten I'm your husband, not your servant.â
Chloe froze for a moment before her expression hardened. âWhy are you suddenly acting like this? All because I asked you to make breakfast?â
âNo.â Adrian shook his head slowly. He had no desire to argue. âI've just realized that I've spent so much time fulfilling your every wish that I've forgotten I have a life of my own.â
âSo now you're going to blame me?â Chloe scoffed. âIf you don't want to make breakfast, just say so!â
Julian smiled faintly before pretending to offer his help. âCome on, Chloe. Don't waste your energy getting angry. I can make breakfast myself. You just rest. I'll take care of it.â
Chloe gave Julian a warm look before turning her cold gaze back to Adrian. âSee? Julian has far more consideration than you do. You've been a husband for years, yet you still can't do anything right.â
Adrian stared at her for a few moments before glancing at Julian, who was sitting comfortably on the sofa. There was truly nothing left to hope for in this marriage. His mother-in-law was fighting for her life in the hospital, yet his wife was busy taking care of another man's stomach.
âDon't worry, Chloe. After today, you won't have to ask me to do anything ever again.â
He picked up the divorce agreement he had prepared and placed it on the table.
âSign it.â
Chloe frowned as she looked at the document. âWhat's this?â
âThe way out you've wanted all along.â
Just as Chloe reached for the document to examine its contents, Julian deliberately knocked the ceramic cup off the table, sending it crashing to the floor and shattering into pieces.
âOh, sorry! My hand slipped,â Julian exclaimed quickly.
Chloe immediately turned away from the document and hurried toward Julian, her face full of concern.
âAre you hurt? Did any of the shards cut you?â
Watching the nauseating scene, Adrian could only scoff at his former self.
âIt's fine, Chloe. You just startled me,â Julian replied gently. His eyes flicked toward the paper in Chloe's hand before shifting to Adrian, a faint, contemptuous smile playing on his lips. âJust sign it first, Chloe. It's probably nothing more than a draft agreement for an additional allowance. There's no way a man who's gotten so comfortable living off his wife's family would agree to a divorce that easily. He's just bluffing.â
Chloe let out an irritated sigh. âYou're always such a nuisance, Adrian. You never let me have a peaceful day.â
Without reading a single line of the document, Chloe snatched the pen from Adrian's hand, hastily scribbled her signature, and threw the paper against his chest.
âYou got what you wanted!â After saying that, Chloe turned toward Julian. âLet me clean up the broken pieces.â
Adrian picked up the document, now bearing both their signatures. He walked toward the door and grabbed the black backpack that had been sitting there since the night before. It contained all his clothes and the few personal belongings he owned.
The backpack had been there since last night, yet Chloe hadn't noticed it once.
Yeah, since when has she ever paid attention to me? Adrian thought bitterly.
Without saying another word, Adrian walked out and closed the door behind him for the last time.
Thirty minutes after Adrian's departure, Chloe's phone rang loudly. Her personal assistant's name appeared on the screen.
Chloe answered as she walked toward the kitchen.
âWhat is it?â
âMs. Chloe, we're in serious trouble!â Her assistant's panicked voice came through the phone. âOur main investor has just unilaterally withdrawn all their funding. Our overseas export channels were completely blocked this morning. If we can't secure new capital and access to a new business network within the next week, our company is at risk of going bankrupt!â
Chloe stopped in her tracks. Her face instantly turned pale.
âHow is that possible? Our export network has always been stable.â
âI don't know, ma'am! But there's one opportunity,â her assistant continued hurriedly. âThe massive conglomerate known as Blackthorn Group has just opened its doors to investment in the local market. If we can partner with them, all our problems will be solved.â
Chloe massaged her temples.
âBlackthorn Group? But its president never appears in public. Their background is incredibly mysterious, and their overseas network controls half the global market.â
âThat's right, ma'am. At the moment, we can only reach their vice president, but they've imposed one absolute condition,â her assistant said tensely. âThey said that if we want to negotiate, we must speak directly with the person at the very top of their organization. The president himself.â
âTheir president?â Chloe raised an eyebrow.
âYes, ma'am. The man who suddenly retired and disappeared three years ago. Rumor has it that he just returned today to take full control of the company again,â her assistant explained.
Chloe clenched her fists.
âWho is this man, really? Why is he so mysterious?â
âNo one knows his true identity, ma'am. Their internal team has kept all information tightly sealed.â
Chloe took a deep breath and straightened her shoulders.
âNo matter what it takes, find a way to contact him. As long as he's willing to work with us to save this company, he can name any terms he wants.â

I just want to end everything
âCome on, Selena. Let's go.âAdrian and Selena walked toward the elevator. There was no point wasting time arguing with someone who didn't even dare take responsibility for his own words.Behind them, Chloe remained frozen in place. Adrian had truly surprised her over the past few days.In all the time she'd known him, she'd never seen anyone treat him with such respect. Adrian had always been in the inferior position, a man without any status or standing. At least, that was what she'd always believed. So why had the manager of a luxurious hotel bowed to him?Why had a simple ring made everyone change their attitude?Chloe glanced at the ring Adrian had been holding, but he had already walked away.âJulian,â she called softly. âWhat's really going on?âJulian let out a rough breath. âI don't know. Maybe he stole that ring from someone rich.âChloe frowned. âStole it?ââWhere else would a man like him get something like that?â Julian scoffed. âDon't tell me you actually believe he has

The atmosphere in the Grand Sovereign Hotel's lobby changed abruptly when the manager bowed to Adrian.Julian could only stare in disbelief, his mouth hanging open.âOnce again, please forgive us, sir. I had no idea our staff had treated you so disrespectfully.â The manager didn't dare meet Adrian's eyes.Adrian gave her a brief glance. âNow that you know what happened, you should also know what needs to be done.âHis voice was calm, but that very calmness only made the manager more nervous.âYes, sir. I'll handle this immediately.âThe manager turned toward the female attendant who had previously looked down on Adrian.âEffective immediately, you're fired!âThe woman's face instantly drained of color.âWhat?â She stared at the manager as though she'd just heard something impossible.âMa'am, what are you saying? I was only doing my job! I didn't know who he was. He arrived without a VIP card and then showed me a ring that the scanner couldn't even read. How was I supposed to know he w
Please forgive our impertinence, sir
The attendant immediately approached. âHow may I help you, sir?â she asked, bowing respectfully to Julian.Julian pointed straight at Adrian. After taking in Adrian's modest clothing, he put on a stern expression.âI'm sorry, sir, but all guests are required to present a valid membership card for verification.ââYou heard him. Show your card!â Julian ordered, acting as though he owned the hotel.Adrian frowned. He hadn't been directly involved in his family's businesses for years. During that time, many things had changed, including the access procedures at hotels under the Blackthorn Group. He had never expected an attendant to treat a VIP card as the sole measure of whether a guest deserved to enter.âSee?â Julian laughed triumphantly. âHe doesn't even have a card!âChloe looked at Adrian with disgust. âStop embarrassing yourself here!âAdrian held his wife's gaze for several seconds. Something hurt even more than Julian's insults, the fact that his own wife wouldn't even give him a

âGood grief! Where are your manners? I wasn't finished talking, and you've already walked away!âSelena stepped in front of Adrian, spreading her arms to block his path.âYou're wasting my time with this pointless conversation, Miss,â Adrian complained, his expression bored. But apparently, Selena wasn't the type of woman who gave up easily.âYou can't leave. Have dinner with me!ââI don't have dinner with strangers.ââWe can get to know each other today.â Selena smiled confidently. âI know you and Chloe are getting divorced. I've also looked into your background. You're the perfect candidate for a husband.ââOh, really?â Adrian raised an eyebrow. The woman standing before him was truly bizarre. He was certain she would insult him again any moment, just as she had a few minutes earlier.âHmm.â Selena nodded again. âYou'd be absolutely perfect if you knew how to make money. Tsk! Unfortunately, you don't have that talent.âAdrian almost laughed. The woman wasn't even trying to hide the
Regret?
âWhere's Chloe? Why hasn't she come?âThose were the first words Belinda uttered when she regained consciousness. The middle-aged woman still looked weak. Her thin, pale fingers groped around until they found Adrian's hand, which she clasped tightly as though she were afraid of losing something.Adrian immediately returned her grip.âChloe is taking care of an urgent project at the office. A major investor showed up unexpectedly. She apologizes for not being able to stay with you.âThe lie tasted bitter on his tongue. He had no choice but to tell it because he couldn't bear to burden Belinda, who had only just regained consciousness, with more distress.Belinda sighed and shook her head.âYou're always defending your wife.â Her gaze was filled with affection and disappointment. âI know my daughter's temperament. She's probably busy with something she considers more important.ââShe works hard for the future of the company, too,â Adrian replied softly.Belinda gently patted the back of
What now?
Adrian had barely stepped into the house when Chloe's complaints greeted him from the living room.âCan you believe it, Julian? He didn't prepare anything for me this morning. Now it's already lunchtime, and I still have to figure out what to eat myself. It's so frustrating!âAdrian paused for a moment. Apparently, his absence from the kitchen that morning had already become the subject of Chloe's complaints to Julian. On the sofa, Chloe sat close to Julian. The man's arm was even draped across the back of the sofa, right behind his wife's shoulders.âYou're back?â Chloe finally noticed his presence. Instead of feeling guilty about complaining behind her husband's back, she frowned. âWhy are you just standing there? Aren't you going to greet us?âAdrian ignored her and continued walking, carrying his shopping bags.âAdrian?â Chloe called out sharply. Her brow furrowed, her expression turning displeased. âAre you mute? Don't make me angry, Adrian. Now go prepare lunch. You don't intend
