"I'm home." Chloe arrived home close to midnight. The house wasn't as brightly lit as usual. Only a single light was on in the living room.

Adrian was sitting there, organizing some documents, with a printed copy of the divorce agreement beside him. He didn't welcome his wife, prepare any hangover soup for her, or even ask if her stomach was feeling better.

"I said I'm home." Chloe stood in front of him, but Adrian remained unmoved, still focused on the documents he was arranging.

Chloe felt uncomfortable with Adrian's unusual behavior. He wouldn't even spare her a glance.

"Adrian, I know you're angry with me. But what you heard this morning was just a joke. You know Selena and I joke around all the time, don't you?"

Adrian slowly raised his head. His expression was blank, his gaze empty.

Chloe grew even more uneasy. Where was the warmth Adrian usually showed her?

"You know I'd never betray you or our marriage," Chloe said, rubbing the back of her neck awkwardly. "I mean, Julian and I have never had any kind of relationship behind your back."

"Then was saying, 'When he comes back, I'll get a divorce,' also a joke?"

His question left Chloe stunned and silent for a long moment.

Adrian didn't press her for an answer. He simply returned to his work.

"What's wrong with you? Why are you suddenly taking this so seriously? Julian and I have been friends for a long time. Picking him up at the airport tomorrow is perfectly normal. You don't need to read too much into it."

Adrian stood up and looked directly into her eyes.

"Fine. If you have nothing else to say about the divorce, I'm going to get some rest."

With that, Adrian walked away.

Chloe blinked in disbelief. He was just letting her go that easily? Was this for real? All this time, Adrian had been so annoyingly childish. He was always asking her whom she cared about more.

"Adrian, wait." Chloe stepped into his path.

Adrian folded his arms calmly, and his composure only irritated her further.

"You're deliberately acting cold so I'll beg you to stay, aren't you?"

Adrian raised an eyebrow, as though her words were an absurd joke.

"I don't care where you go or who you go with anymore. Over there..." He jerked his chin toward the table. "The divorce agreement is ready. You can sign it whenever you want."

Chloe gasped, wondering whether Adrian was actually serious about the divorce.

Impossible! Adrian would never agree to a divorce. He had even given up pursuing a career just to be the devoted husband who was always there for her. Chloe tried to reassure herself.

Then she froze. Why was this bothering her? Why was she suddenly panicking?

Chloe shook her head, trying to dismiss the increasingly absurd thoughts running through her mind.

"I don't want to argue tonight. We'll talk after I pick up Julian."

Without responding, Adrian continued walking.

Chloe returned to the bedroom, but she couldn't calm down. She tried closing her eyes over and over, yet sleep refused to come. For the umpteenth time, she stared at the bedroom door, but Adrian still didn't appear to make sure she was tucked in under her blanket.

Chloe waited until dawn broke, but Adrian never came.

She climbed out of bed and headed to the kitchen. Adrian wasn't there. She couldn't smell his masculine scent anywhere, either. There wasn't even any breakfast on the table. No cheerful good morning accompanied by his charming, broad smile.

"Is he still angry?" Chloe wondered, but she didn't dwell on it for long. She quickly got ready to pick Julian up from the airport.

"Oh, my God! That's Julian!" Selena squealed when she spotted a handsome man walking toward them.

"Hi," Julian greeted them as he stopped in front of Chloe.

Selena deliberately shoved Chloe forward, sending her tumbling into Julian's arms. Julian wrapped an arm around her, but Chloe hurriedly pushed herself away.

"Selena!" she protested, giving her friend a gentle shove.

"Stop being so shy. You and Julian must have missed each other terribly."

Julian smiled at that. His gaze never left Chloe, like a predator who had just spotted easy prey. The woman who had once been head over heels for him had grown into an elegant beauty. Not only that, but he'd also heard that Chloe had become the third-largest business owner in the city. That was the biggest reason he'd come back.

Having both the woman and her money would be wonderful. To hell with her marital status, Julian thought.

"How have you been?" Julian asked out of politeness.

"I'm fine," Chloe replied briefly.

Selena clicked her tongue. "How cliché," the meddlesome woman complained.

"I'm glad you came to pick me up. Does your husband know you're here to get me?" Julian asked again, putting on the act of a respectable gentleman. "After all, I'm an outsider. I wouldn't want to cause any trouble between the two of you."

"Oh, come on, Julian," Selena answered for her. "Why are you suddenly bringing up Adrian? You're ruining the moment! Please, Adrian is nothing but a poor son-in-law freeloading in his wife's family home. He's completely useless. Poor Chloe has to work so hard. Thank goodness you've finally come back!"

Julian smiled faintly. "Does it really make a difference? Chloe is still married, after all."

"Chloe has always liked you," Selena chimed in. "In three years of marriage, she and Adrian haven't even shared a bed. Chloe only married him because she wanted to make you jealous back then. Isn't that right, Chloe?" Selena winked flirtatiously at her.

"Shut your mouth, Selena!" Chloe's face flushed. "You talk too much."

"The truth is, you're still a virgin. You've been saving yourself for the man you love."

Chloe shot Selena a fierce glare before turning to Julian.

"Selena is just talking nonsense."

Julian nodded. "Yes, I know."

But his eyes burned with desire. The moment he'd gotten a good look at Chloe, his body had stirred with lust. He imagined how beautiful her curves must look beneath the dress she was wearing.

His desire intensified when he learned that Chloe had preserved her innocence for his sake. He'd seen plenty of beautiful women out there, but someone like Chloe was truly rare.

Heat surged through his body. He needed a woman to satisfy him, and getting Chloe into his bed would require just a little more effort.

"I should get going," Selena announced, interrupting Julian's wild thoughts.

"Where are you going?" Chloe asked in protest.

"Oh, my God! I'm not going to hang around here like a third wheel while two lovebirds catch up after being apart for so long." Without waiting for Chloe to respond, Selena promptly left.

"She always does whatever she wants," Chloe grumbled.

"Are you uncomfortable being alone with me?" Julian asked.

Chloe bit her lip, looking awkward.

"I can take a taxi," Julian said, suppressing his irritation.

"That's not what I mean," Chloe finally replied. "I'll drive you home."

Julian's smile widened. "In that case, I'm imposing on you today."

"It's no problem."

Chloe walked toward her car, and Julian followed behind her, concealing a satisfied smirk beneath his friendly expression.

His plan was going more smoothly than he'd imagined.

Chloe still liked him. He just needed to be a little patient until she was officially divorced.

After that, Chloe's wealth would be his.

“Come on, Selena. Let's go.”Adrian and Selena walked toward the elevator. There was no point wasting time arguing with someone who didn't even dare take responsibility for his own words.Behind them, Chloe remained frozen in place. Adrian had truly surprised her over the past few days.In all the time she'd known him, she'd never seen anyone treat him with such respect. Adrian had always been in the inferior position, a man without any status or standing. At least, that was what she'd always believed. So why had the manager of a luxurious hotel bowed to him?Why had a simple ring made everyone change their attitude?Chloe glanced at the ring Adrian had been holding, but he had already walked away.“Julian,” she called softly. “What's really going on?”Julian let out a rough breath. “I don't know. Maybe he stole that ring from someone rich.”Chloe frowned. “Stole it?”“Where else would a man like him get something like that?” Julian scoffed. “Don't tell me you actually believe he has

The atmosphere in the Grand Sovereign Hotel's lobby changed abruptly when the manager bowed to Adrian.Julian could only stare in disbelief, his mouth hanging open.“Once again, please forgive us, sir. I had no idea our staff had treated you so disrespectfully.” The manager didn't dare meet Adrian's eyes.Adrian gave her a brief glance. “Now that you know what happened, you should also know what needs to be done.”His voice was calm, but that very calmness only made the manager more nervous.“Yes, sir. I'll handle this immediately.”The manager turned toward the female attendant who had previously looked down on Adrian.“Effective immediately, you're fired!”The woman's face instantly drained of color.“What?” She stared at the manager as though she'd just heard something impossible.“Ma'am, what are you saying? I was only doing my job! I didn't know who he was. He arrived without a VIP card and then showed me a ring that the scanner couldn't even read. How was I supposed to know he w

  • Please forgive our impertinence, sir

The attendant immediately approached. “How may I help you, sir?” she asked, bowing respectfully to Julian.Julian pointed straight at Adrian. After taking in Adrian's modest clothing, he put on a stern expression.“I'm sorry, sir, but all guests are required to present a valid membership card for verification.”“You heard him. Show your card!” Julian ordered, acting as though he owned the hotel.Adrian frowned. He hadn't been directly involved in his family's businesses for years. During that time, many things had changed, including the access procedures at hotels under the Blackthorn Group. He had never expected an attendant to treat a VIP card as the sole measure of whether a guest deserved to enter.“See?” Julian laughed triumphantly. “He doesn't even have a card!”Chloe looked at Adrian with disgust. “Stop embarrassing yourself here!”Adrian held his wife's gaze for several seconds. Something hurt even more than Julian's insults, the fact that his own wife wouldn't even give him a

“Good grief! Where are your manners? I wasn't finished talking, and you've already walked away!”Selena stepped in front of Adrian, spreading her arms to block his path.“You're wasting my time with this pointless conversation, Miss,” Adrian complained, his expression bored. But apparently, Selena wasn't the type of woman who gave up easily.“You can't leave. Have dinner with me!”“I don't have dinner with strangers.”“We can get to know each other today.” Selena smiled confidently. “I know you and Chloe are getting divorced. I've also looked into your background. You're the perfect candidate for a husband.”“Oh, really?” Adrian raised an eyebrow. The woman standing before him was truly bizarre. He was certain she would insult him again any moment, just as she had a few minutes earlier.“Hmm.” Selena nodded again. “You'd be absolutely perfect if you knew how to make money. Tsk! Unfortunately, you don't have that talent.”Adrian almost laughed. The woman wasn't even trying to hide the

  • Regret?

“Where's Chloe? Why hasn't she come?”Those were the first words Belinda uttered when she regained consciousness. The middle-aged woman still looked weak. Her thin, pale fingers groped around until they found Adrian's hand, which she clasped tightly as though she were afraid of losing something.Adrian immediately returned her grip.“Chloe is taking care of an urgent project at the office. A major investor showed up unexpectedly. She apologizes for not being able to stay with you.”The lie tasted bitter on his tongue. He had no choice but to tell it because he couldn't bear to burden Belinda, who had only just regained consciousness, with more distress.Belinda sighed and shook her head.“You're always defending your wife.” Her gaze was filled with affection and disappointment. “I know my daughter's temperament. She's probably busy with something she considers more important.”“She works hard for the future of the company, too,” Adrian replied softly.Belinda gently patted the back of

  • What now?

Adrian had barely stepped into the house when Chloe's complaints greeted him from the living room.“Can you believe it, Julian? He didn't prepare anything for me this morning. Now it's already lunchtime, and I still have to figure out what to eat myself. It's so frustrating!”Adrian paused for a moment. Apparently, his absence from the kitchen that morning had already become the subject of Chloe's complaints to Julian. On the sofa, Chloe sat close to Julian. The man's arm was even draped across the back of the sofa, right behind his wife's shoulders.“You're back?” Chloe finally noticed his presence. Instead of feeling guilty about complaining behind her husband's back, she frowned. “Why are you just standing there? Aren't you going to greet us?”Adrian ignored her and continued walking, carrying his shopping bags.“Adrian?” Chloe called out sharply. Her brow furrowed, her expression turning displeased. “Are you mute? Don't make me angry, Adrian. Now go prepare lunch. You don't intend
