Adrian's Hidden Connection

Daniel could hardly believe what he was seeing. The name on Zara's document was clear. Adrian Cole, the wealthy man who had insulted him and tried to turn Amara against him, was tied to the suspicious transactions at the Okafor Group.

"Could this be a trap?" Daniel asked Michael as they left the café. "Adrian may have placed his name there to make us suspect him."

"That is possible," Michael replied. "We must verify the records before drawing conclusions. I do remember hearing that Adrian's family did business with your uncle years ago, but I never knew it went beyond ordinary dealings."

Daniel stopped at the kerb. "Why would Adrian want money from my grandfather's company when his family is already wealthy?"

"People with money often want more, especially when they think they will not be caught. But we should not assume greed is his only reason."

Daniel put the document inside his jacket. He had meant to spend the day preparing for Samuel, but Zara had changed everything. If Adrian was involved in the fraud, he might know where the blue ledger was hidden. Daniel decided to call Amara, though he feared she would refuse to believe it.

She answered after the second ring. "Daniel, where are you? I have been trying to reach you since morning."

"I was with Michael. Listen carefully, Amara. This concerns Adrian."

"What has he done now?"

"A former financial investigator for the Okafor Group gave us a document. Adrian's name appears in the records of suspicious company transfers."

A long silence followed. "That cannot be right. Adrian owns several businesses and has worked with many wealthy people. His name could appear for an ordinary reason."

"I thought of that. But she was dismissed after investigating the payments, and she believes someone wanted the records hidden."

"Daniel, I know Adrian can be proud and unpleasant. But are you sure your anger toward him is not influencing you?"

The question hurt, because it showed how little she trusted his judgment, but he understood that she needed proof for so serious an accusation.

"I am not asking you to believe everything I say. I am asking you to be careful around him until we know the truth."

"I will be careful," Amara said, though she still sounded uncertain. "Promise me you will not do anything foolish."

"I promise."

When the call ended, Daniel told Michael they must find out what Adrian had been doing with Victor. Michael agreed but warned him not to approach Adrian directly. "We need more evidence, and we cannot alert him before we understand the full picture." That afternoon, Michael asked a former colleague with access to company registration records to check the businesses named in Zara's document and compare their directors, addresses and finances with Adrian's known companies.

While they waited, Daniel went home to change his clothes. He still meant to keep the meeting with Samuel, but he wanted to be sure nobody followed him. He found Amara on the sofa with her phone in her hand, looking worried.

"What happened?"

"Adrian called. He invited me to dinner tonight. He said he had something important to discuss, and when I asked what, he said it concerned you."

Daniel frowned. "Did he say anything else?"

"He said you were making dangerous accusations against people who could help you. And he said that if I truly cared about you, I would persuade you to stop investigating your grandfather's affairs."

Anger rose in Daniel. Adrian had no right to interfere in his marriage, and his knowledge of the investigation suggested that information was reaching him somehow.

"Did you tell him about Zara?"

"I have told him nothing of what you told me."

Daniel believed her, but he was troubled. If Adrian knew about the investigation before they had even contacted him, someone might be watching Michael or Zara.

"Do not meet him alone. If he has something important to say, he can say it with other people present."

Amara studied his face. "Do you really believe he is involved?"

"I believe there is enough evidence to investigate him. I do not yet know how far it goes."

She nodded slowly. "Then I will not meet him tonight. I will tell him I have other plans."

Daniel thanked her. For the first time in a long while, he felt that his wife was standing beside him rather than against him.

At four, Michael called with the first results. Several companies in Zara's document shared the same registered office address even though they supposedly worked in different industries. Worse, two of their directors had once worked for businesses owned by Adrian's family. It did not prove that Adrian had stolen from the Okafor Group, but it showed that his network overlapped with the companies that received the money.

"There is another problem," Michael said. "One of the companies was registered shortly after your grandfather disappeared from public life. Its directors changed twice, but the same person kept control of its bank instructions."

"Who?"

"The records are incomplete. We are still trying to establish the connection."

Daniel looked at the clock. Almost five. He could not let the discovery distract him from finding the witness. "I am going to the railway station. We agreed to meet Samuel, and I will not abandon him now."

"I will be nearby," Michael said. "But we do not know who else may be there. If anything feels wrong, leave immediately."

Daniel reached the area shortly before six. The old railway station had been quiet for years, and only a few people moved around the nearby shops. He left his taxi some distance away and walked towards the entrance with his phone ready. He checked the time and waited.

At six minutes past six, a man in a grey cap approached, glanced around and asked, "Are you Daniel Okafor?"

"Yes. Who are you?"

"Samuel Adeyemi. We spoke yesterday."

Daniel studied him. He looked tired and thinner than expected, and his eyes moved constantly, as though he feared being watched. "You should not have come alone."

"I could not bring anyone else. I have been followed for days, and I do not know whom to trust."

"Then tell me about the blue ledger."

Samuel swallowed and looked towards the road. "Your grandfather discovered that money was being stolen from the company. But the theft was only part of it. Someone was using the money to gain control of businesses your grandfather meant to keep independent."

"Who?"

"Your uncle Victor was in the meetings, but he was not alone. Someone outside the family provided the money and arranged the companies used to hide it."

Daniel remembered Adrian's name on Zara's page. "Was it Adrian Cole?"

Samuel's expression changed. Before he could answer, a black car turned into the station road and stopped near the entrance. He gripped Daniel's arm and whispered.

"Listen. If they followed me, we have very little time. The ledger is not with Victor, and it is not with me. Your grandfather gave it to someone he believed would never betray him."

"Who?"

Samuel looked him in the eye. "Your mother."

Daniel froze. "My mother died when I was a child. What are you talking about?"

Samuel opened his mouth, but the doors of the black car swung open. Two men stepped out and began walking towards them. Samuel's face went pale.

"They have found us," he whispered. "Whatever happens, do not let them take you alive."

  • The Woman Who Should Be Dead

Daniel stood motionless in the living room, staring at his phone as if the woman might call back if he waited long enough. Her voice had sounded weak but familiar, and her words refused to leave his mind. Amara watched him with growing concern."What happened? Who called?"He slowly lowered the phone. "She said her name was Grace. She said she knew what happened to my grandfather. When I asked who she was, she said she was the person he believed was dead."Amara covered her mouth. "Do you think it was your mother?""I do not know what to think anymore."Daniel had spent years accepting that his mother was gone. He remembered the day his relatives gathered around him and explained that he would never see her again. He remembered crying until he fell asleep, and his grandfather holding him and promising he would always be protected. Now every memory seemed to hold a question he had never thought to ask.Michael arrived within half an hour. He studied the number and tried calling it, but

  • The Secret About His Mother

Daniel stared at Samuel as if he had spoken another language. His mother had died when he was a child, and he had lived for years with the memory of losing her. Now Samuel was saying she had been trusted with a secret that could change everything he believed about his family."What do you mean my mother had the ledger?" he demanded. "She died years ago. How could my grandfather have given her anything?"Samuel gripped his arm. "I know how this sounds. But your mother knew more about the Okafor family than you were ever told. Your grandfather trusted her because she was the only person who questioned his decisions without wanting anything from his wealth."Before Daniel could ask more, the two men from the black car came closer. One was tall and broad-shouldered. The other had a scar running from his left cheek to the edge of his jaw."Mr Adeyemi," the tall man called, "you have caused enough trouble. Come with us and nobody needs to get hurt."Samuel stepped behind Daniel. "Do not lis

  • The Man Behind The Ledger

Daniel did not sleep for the rest of the night. He sat on the edge of his bed with the phone in his hand, rereading the last message from Michael's number. He had no way of knowing whether the lawyer was safe or whether someone else held his phone. Every minute made him more anxious, but he knew that rushing into the street without a plan could deliver him straight to his enemies. At six in the morning he called again. The phone rang several times before a man answered."Who is this?" Daniel demanded. After a pause, a familiar voice replied. "Daniel, it is me."Relief washed over him. "Michael, where have you been? I thought something had happened to you.""Something nearly did. I was followed last night and had to switch off my phone and hide. I am using another line now. Tell me, did you receive a message from my number?""Yes. It told me not to go to the railway station."Michael was silent for a moment. "I did not send it."Daniel heard him breathe out. • A Meeting In The Dark

Daniel read the message for the third time, hoping he had misunderstood it. The words had not changed. Someone knew he had found Samuel Adeyemi's notebook, and that person was determined to stop him from meeting the missing witness. He looked across the living room at Michael, who had come to the apartment shortly after Daniel's call."Someone must be watching us," Daniel said. "They knew what we found in Samuel's office, and they know about tomorrow's meeting."Michael adjusted his glasses and studied the screen. "Then Samuel may be in greater danger than we thought. And we cannot assume the railway station is safe.""Then we cancel.""If Samuel is the only person who can explain what happened to your grandfather's original documents, cancelling gives our enemies more time to find him. We must go, but carefully."Daniel walked to the window. People were returning from work, and the streetlights were coming on. Everything outside looked normal, yet he could no longer trust it. A man w

  • The Missing Witness

Daniel stood beside the dining table with the phoneagainst his ear. The witness to his grandfather's final will had been missing for three days, and the document that could name that person had been stolen. He could no longer believe in coincidence."Michael, do you know who the witness is?""I know the name, but I must check it against the original records first. Your grandfather had me keep some details confidential until the inheritance process began, and the missing document held information that is not in the ordinary copy of the will.""Why did you not tell me earlier?""Because I only learned this evening that the witness was missing. The number on file had been disconnected, and nobody at the person's former office knows where they have gone."Daniel walked to the window. The street was quiet, and most of the neighbouring lights had gone out. He wondered whether the sender of the threatening message was watching his apartment. "Send me the name as soon as you confirm it.""I
